c/o 2018 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all,

I'm not too big with online forums, but I figured this one would be pretty helpful. It's good to get a sense of where people are at and to get feedback from those already enrolled.

I'm applying to 8 schools: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa State, NC State, Glasgow (UK), and Tennessee

I'm a Tennessee resident, but would much rather go OOS (I'm at Penn State for undergrad - graduating this December)

Here's my some of stats I guess:
Gender - Male
Age - 22
Major - Animal Science
Minor - Spanish (had the chance to study abroad in Mexico - it was awesome)
Cumulative GPA - 3.80
GPA from this past year's classes - 3.73
Pre-Req GPA - 3.64 (roughly - I used Wisconsin's system to calculate it)

I feel I have lots of veterinary, animal, and research experience (with animals). Just a matter of adding up all I've done...I've had pretty heavy involvement in community volunteering, extracurriculars, and leadership opportunities (somewhat) pretty much my whole life.

I had my personal statement revised A LOT, but I think it's finally where I want it to be. I'll have 4 LORs (two from professors who have DVMs, one from a professor / research vet, and one from a vet I've researched with this summer).

I think the main thing I'm concerned about is the GRE. Not a fan of standardized tests AT ALL...but I'm aiming for mid to high (preferably high) 150s range? I'll be taking it in little over a month... :scared:

Any feedback would be appreciated. All the best to fellow c/o 2018 applicants! :xf:

I am sure you know, but Glasgow is a 5 year program. SnS can tell you more about Glasgow. Any reason for choosing Glasgow and not any of the other UK/EU (the EU is for you devyn 😉) schools?

Oh, and Good Luck!! :luck:

I have a friend who's at Glasgow from my school and she really likes it. Some reps from Glasgow actually came to my school to talk about their vet program, and it seemed really impressive. They were really personable and ready to answer any questions I had

Bombed the Quant section of the GRE today which really sucks cause every practice test I took predicted a decent to good score. Bleh. $@&! Going to register for another for the end of August now... 🙁

...Registered for an afternoon this time. Hopefully that will make a difference (I realized that my practice tests were always taken in the afternoon/evening). Suggestions for a higher score would appreciated!!!!!!!

I bet it will make a difference! I just took mine and I staged a practice test in the library in an uncomfy chair with no water or breaks at the same time i would take my real test a few days ago. I think that helped a LOT, and it was almost like a routine because I studied at that same time every day for a week before.

Welcome Iso!

I think this has been debated before... but I'm not too wonderful with standardized tests either, I kept doing poorly on all my practice items when I used kaplan. Once I switched over to the Princeton Review I *finally* started doing well. Something about their format worked for me. So my advice is to try different companies to study! I wish I didn't waste so much time sticking with Kaplan when I clearly wasn't getting better. (I didn't take a class, just used their review books)

Also fun fact for everyone preparing for the GRE. ETS actually publishes a practice test. I didn't know this in time but I wish I had because that's bound to be the most similar test to the real one.

ETS has a BUNCH of free prep materials on their website, including practice questions and a math review, and when you register for the exam you can get a copy of software that has a practice test in the exact format of the exam.

I finished my 2nd orgo class this morning! :soexcited:

It was a bear of a final - but I am so excited that I only have Biochem left to take this fall, and my application is coming together!!

Everything is happening so quickly!

Yay!!!!!!! You are one brave soul. I'm only applying to schools that don't require orgo 2 since my IS doesn't anyways:laugh:

This application stuff is so stressful!!

Hm, are there a lot of schools that only require ochem 1? I think all the ones I applied to needed both, though I had to take 1 & 2 to be allowed to take biochem anyway.

I did a practice and scored 150 quantitative, 147 verbal, and 3.5 writing. First time going through any kind of diagnostic practice, but I totally wasn't in the mood to take it. Was in lab pretty much all day and felt drained before I did any of the sections (I guess that's sorta good considering?)...looks like I'll be doing a good amount of work before I take it on August 15th... :/

That's roughly what I was scoring consistently until I found a better book for me. So maybe try a different study tool if the one you're using isn't getting you somewhere. Good luck! :luck:

I think UPenn is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that only requires one semester (at least that I've investigated), but I'm in the same boat - I needed the 2nd semester to take biochem. I think I'll be glad I did take the 2nd semester with all the carbonyl/carboxylic acid chemistry we did - I'm hoping it helps my understanding in biochem!!

I also wouldn't recommend doing Organic in a 4 week summer semester - neither class was fun in a condensed version. I'm happy I can sleep now that it's over!!!

KSU, university of Wisconsin, Washington state, Illinois.. A few schools only require 3-5 hours of ochem as long as it is prereq for biochem 🙂

Yeah, seems like a lot only require the first semester and first lab. However, like you said, biochem is required at pretty much all, and what school doesn't have ochem II as a prereq for biochem?

Does anyone know the questions they asked from last years UC Davis supplemental app?

Does anyone know the questions they asked from last years UC Davis supplemental app?

There weren't any essays or anything, it was just a form to fill out, and no supplemental fee. I don't know if they're changing that this year, last year was an experiment.

Thanks for the quick reply back! I was getting anxious because the time it's supposed to come out is smack in the middle of fall classes. =/

Pardon my rant...but I was hoping that the verification of transcripts through VMCAS would give me a small financial break (I attended 3 schools), but all the vet schools I'm applying to require transcripts on top of the ones sent to VMCAS. :\ So now it's just an extra $30 to spend on VMCAS. 🙁

Again, sorry. Just felt like venting a bit...

*EDIT: Okay, so I received some emails back...turns out that the websites just haven't been updated. Except for KSU. They still require transcripts to the school directly.

I feel like I have come to a screeching halt when it comes to applications... I have to study for the GRE (I am taking it on 7/31) and write my personal statement, but I am seriously lacking motivation to do either. This kind of scares me :/

Me too 🙁 I'm taking 2 classes right now (I freakin' hate Physics) and have not only put off applications, but also studying for my 2nd GRE on 8/24. FML. I figure that I'll have August to concentrate on both.

Definitely get goin' with your GRE studying! You have August to finish up the apps...the GRE is too important! Chop, chop! 😉

Keep your head up, guys! Just plow on through.

On a similar note, I literally burst into tears while my bf was helping me with my personal statement the other day. I'm horrible at putting my thoughts into words and was getting really frustrated. SO is a saint for having to deal with me 🙄

Yes ma'am 😀

That is how it was when I wrote my statement for Grad School last year... I gave him my first draft and he trashed it (but in a caring way... if that makes sense). I have a feeling that he is going to even worse with the Vet School one, since is the one that means the most to me (and him too, he has been very supportive and encouraging with me wanting to back to school AGAIN).

GOOD LUCK!

Hahah My boyfriend is heaven sent for dealing with me during my application cycle last year. It definitely brings out the worst in us! Crying/anxiety/excitement/stress/FREAK OUTS hahah Its a roller coaster of a year, but take each day at a time and take deep breaths! You can do it!! :luck: :luck:

Ooo, thank you. I keep meaning to call schools to see if I still need to send out transcripts and you just saved me one call. Awesome!

No problem! Mississippi State only requires transcripts to be sent to VMCAS. I don't think this is reflected on their website. Same goes for Ohio, but they list it on their site. For anyone curious. If anyone has any others to add, please post it here. 🙂

So, I have been thinking about this and I am not sure what others have done so I am coming for a consensus...

My first degree was in Animal Science where I had contact with large animals (in my general lab classes) and small ruminants (I took a small ruminant management course). Have you guys been including those as animal experiences? I have never thought of doing that on my previous applications, but I have seen that some have. Thoughts?

I included my animal contact time during the lab portions of my Animal Nutrition course (handling quail and sheep) and my Equine Management course. Figured it wouldn't hurt.

I personally don't have any of that kind of experience but I don't think it would hurt to add it. You did in fact get animal experience by being around them for your labs, so I can't of a reason why you can't add it to your applications. Good luck!

Alright, I just called U of I and they DO NOT want transcripts sent to them, only to VMCAS. Iowa and Louisiana said on their websites the same thing so there's 3 more schools for peeps.

Just stopping in to see how everyone is doing with their applications. Hope you're all rocking it out! :horns:  :horns:

Is it just me or is time flying by? I can't believe it's middle of July already! :scared:

VMCAS is pretty much complete from my end. I'm now working on the supplemental essays for my chosen schools. They're equally as much work as the personal statement 😉 Thanks for checking up!

Slowly but surely they are coming along. Have to do my personal statement and work on supplemental essay questions. Studying for the GRE, which I take on the 31st.

Thanks for asking 😀

Have a rough outline for my PS done and have ideas jotted down for each supplemental question. Just have to put it all together.

I just want it to be over already!

Finished 3 supplemental questions...and my brain is fried -____-. Rewarding myself with an episode of the Layover. Yay, Amazon Prime!

Thanks! Stuck on the personal statement of course. Writing is no fun for me.

I have LSU and KSU's supplementals completely done (just have to mail KSU's), and almost all of the VMCAS done. I however still have essays for Iowa and U of I and need patience to deal with WSU's glitchy beyond all reason app. Plus, I need my third evaluator to actually accept that she's doing my LOR. Oh fun times...

I just want it to be over already!

It will be over before you know it! The past year just flew right by! I can remember being in y'all's shoes this time last year... Now I'm 8 days from moving away to start vet school and I can't believe where the time has gone!! Keep your eye on the prize!!

Yes, time will fly! I remember thinking I was going to have to wait FOREVER until I found out if I got in and now it is a month and one day until school starts! Good luck everyone!

I had a productive meeting with Dr. Bailey from UCVM on Monday morning. Now I'm trying to figure out how to re-word my explanation statement in order to fit in all of the things he says they need to see and still keep it under the word count. I'm also playing phone tag with my vet to see if I can come in one day a week either to shadow or as a paid assistant (paid would be preferable, but obviously isn't necessary). The long hours I'm working at my research internship have made it hard to get hold of her and coordinate things because I'm always in the lab with no phone access. All of my experience is really long ago and the vet I was hoping would write my referral at this point passed away a few years ago, so I'm starting from scratch for that if I decide to apply to WCVM this year (I think I'm going to as long as I can get the clinic thing figured out...). Good luck to all those fighting with VMCAS, I'm sure you'll rock it!

Does anyone know if UGA's supplemental is up yet? I've tried searching numerous times, but can' seem to find it on the site.

It will fly by!!! Enjoy your last year/years of undergrad!! I miss it already!!

You have to request an account for the supplemental application (can't remember if they did this the same way last year or not...I've done far too many supplementals, haha). Try this link: http://www.vet.uga.edu/academic/supplemental_application . If that doesn't work, you have to go to the "Apply Now" button on UGA's page and then find and click on "required supplemental application". That should bring you to where you need to be.
Best of luck :luck:

Yes, that's the same way they've done it previously.
