Class of 2019...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those of you with surface pros, what do you do with your surface pen while you're not using it? I'm dubious that the little adhesive pen holder will last a month. I've already accidentally pulled it off a few times just using it at home.

I attached mine to the "top" (where the on button is) and I haven't had a problem with mine falling off at all, it actually seems a lot sturdier than I thought!

I also use the supplied tab and haven't had any issues with it coming off. Mine is on the left side. I've had mine for 9 months with no problems...other than my dog chewing the end of the stylus off (still works perfectly, sans the button on top). But that's not exactly Microsoft's fault. 😳

Also if it isn't plugged in, there is a nifty little magnetic area to it on the right side of it that will hold your pen perfectly in place!

We have already had 3 tests, 4th test is on Friday. It is histology, Anatomy next Friday (again).

Our midterm is next Friday. I'd rather have your testing style-our tests are all subjects at once. It feels a lot more overwhelming that way
Wow. I didnt know that vet schools did it that way. I have a friend in Medical School and she has exams in that format. How many exams blocks do you have per semester?

Sorry guys. It said it wasnt posting.

Just a midterm and final. Though the midterm and final both have days where there's technically 3 major exam sections. The final also has a second day where all the material from yur classes is given in an integrated format (midterm and final day 1 are more separated by subject categories).

I suppose it's good for us to keep our subjects integrated. I also like that we just have one test day as opposed to a week that drags. We're the first year to only have one midterm day (as opposed to two), also. Illinois c/o 2019 is a guinea pig class, in general. They're trying out several new things on us

Had my first canine anatomy quiz today :3 I think it went very well. Only one question I know for sure I missed.

Whooo Hooo!!

We have Histology on Friday and after I&I, Anatomy, and Physiology I am really trying to care about studying. I am more focused on my Anatomy Test next week. BE WARNED! The hindlimb muscle attachments are tricky. They all attach to something by way of some ligament or fascia. Ex. Symphysis Pelvis by way of the symphysis fascia. :bang:

It depends on your personal preferences, but I think overall I really like the idea of having it all integrated. Yeah, when you finally get to the exam it'll be worth more and will have more material. But I think my stress level overall is lower than it would be were I dealing with what seems typical at other vet schools, lots of exams spread out over 1-2 week periods, maybe 1-2 weeks of no exams, repeat.

The world seems intent on distracting me from studying! T-T I *have* studied this week, but not nearly as much as I should, with my midterm and clinical anatomy quiz coming up next week. Now that I'm over the hurdle that is Wednesday (the busiest day), I can really buckle down for the rest of the week/weekend. Woo.

It seems like most of our class has Wednesday as their longest day! I completely lost tonight...I got paged for WMC. So, there goes studying. I'm trying so hard to crack down but I'm still trying to get into school mode. I'm 3 weeks behind reality, here.

I have an iPad, not a surface pro, but I use a zip up sleeve that my ipad, stylus, extra stylus tips, charging cord and screen wipe goes in. That way everything I need for the iPad is right there and its hard to lose the little things.

First 1/2 day of classes today, another half tomorrow... I feel like a slacker already compared to your all!

Guys, I still haven't started school yet. Orientation is in 10 days. :heckyeah: It's crazy to read about all your tests and struggles because I feel like I'm an imaginary vet student at this point. Although I am really enjoying all this free time....

Where are you headed? When are your class breaks? I kind of like that we started so early. I get a whole week for Thanksgiving and 30 days for Christmas break.

Oregon State. We're on the quarter system. I'll be in school until mid June. I've never been on the quarter system before so we'll see how it goes.

Just survived first two exams! We're all still alive even though some of us were skeptical.

I promise you guys did survive, and now it's time for you to relax and enjoy Smoker!! 😀😀

The second years on the big sib committee were kind enough to put a practice midterm together for us tonight, complete with a full anatomy practical.

I'm still not up to where I'd like to be material-wise, but just having that practice really set my nerves at ease and highlighted my weak areas.

My weak areas: All nerves and vessels.

Those are definitely some of mine too, though part of my problem was also with some of the bones and areas in the large animal antebrachium and hoof. But as for vessels and nerves, I think everyone's about there.

For nerves: I HIGHLY suggest the CSU website. I was going through a nerve quiz today at lunch that's on there. Basically what I would do was read the question and then try and see if I could answer it before looking at the multiple choice options. I did it a few times and I think it really helped. I was also talking to someone who said Scott suggested essentially drawing a map of the vessels over and over again to learn the branching pattern. I'm definitely going to try that this weekend.

I was trying to plan out a drawing on the way home! Unfortunately, I'm no artist.

Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised with how I did. I certainly didn't 'pass,' but I did much better than most of the scores I heard (not that I'm gloating, but it makes me feel like I'm in a better position than I thought). Plus, it helps for me to be able to teach the rest of my lab group the stuff I know. It helps it stick.

I felt pretty good about palpation today, too. Until that stallion across from my horse went nutso....

Oh, my drawing will be a laughably simple assemblage of lines. I figure that I'm just going to make a non-anatomically correct diagram so I can pound the order into my head.

Oh gosh, with palpation. o.o Our horse was apparently biting groups that came before ours. None of us got bitten, but our horse was definitely antsy and impatient, so we were trying to give her plenty of breaks (she tried several times to sneak out the door...)

I was in the third group to go...I guess someone decided to go ahead and walk their mare towards the door to let her out before we were given the okay. Of course, she urinated right in front of the stallion (the horse, not the girl walking her ), who then started getting super excited (jumping/kicking). I was so glad those girls got out of there, but boyyyyy Ashley seemed pretty mad.

Oh gosh, I heard the tail end of that story from Ashley while we were walking our horses over to the pasture. I didn't realize that happened today. That's crazy!

I walked out a horse with you, then! Yeah it was pretty scary! It was entirely unavoidable too, but it really was a very close call for the girl who was holding the horse 😕

It's good that everyone was all right, at least. It would've been awful if somebody was injured or worse the week before midterms.

I guess the question I have is why was the stallion anywhere near you

At least the girl was able to physically control the horse 😉

Edit: Also, if you really want to get into this again, we could also talk about how an unplanned event/distraction occurred, sending said stallion into a fit which could have potentially resulted in serious injury, or death. I'm glad we weren't in with elephants, or it likely would have ended differently.

Just survived first two exams! We're all still alive even though some of us were skeptical.

I figured I should have posted and responses to swin since you would say something if I didn't lol. Yes I am still alive, but I am also nice and tipsy, so I feel like all comments should be directed to the drunk sdn thread lol

Smoker was awesome, and I didn't have any doubt in you two in passing the anatomy exams!!

Just seems entirely avoidable. There's no reason to have that stallion anywhere near mares. at least when I was at UTK, they tried to keep stallions in completely separate areas. I wasn't commenting at all on our previous conversation. just seems like an accident that oversight from the university could have averted.

Oh, misinterpreted. Figured you were trying to give me crap.

Actually, I was under the same impression...stallions aren't the most easy-going horses, with or without mares around, right? Why is he being used for teaching? I don't know how our school operates when it comes to the horses yet. A few horses were stalled for laminitis, so he may have been one of them.

Yeah, we didn't use stallions for teaching anything other than semen collection. And even then with a LOT of supervision.

You know, coming into a conversation with the assumption that someone is going to give you crap makes your responses defensive. Maybe assume positive intent. The majority of the time, I'm not giving you crap, I'm commenting on a situation

I understand what you're saying, but when the majority of replies I get on here are nearly always argumentative (even if its just differing opinions expressed in not so friendly ways) or just plain giving me crap, what else would I expect? You also used very similar phrasing in our previous discussion as a snarky/sarcastic way to argue with me, so it wasn't hard to make that connection.

You are normally one of the most level-headed of the bunch, so I'll give you that. At this point, it's very easy to expect to be given crap, even to the point where things I've said over a year ago are brought up (severely out of context, as well) in attempts to ridicule. It's always nice to get messages from bystanders reassuring me that I'm not hated by everyone on here and that I'm not actually coming off as some stupid/rude poster (because that's certainly how I've been made to feel), but I'm leaning towards deleting my account anyways. Sorry to vent, but I had to say my piece.

say what you like. But some of what is seen as "snarkiness" on your end isn't snarky. Some of it is. But internalizing this kind of thing isn't healthy for you or anyone else. It's easy to take personal offense online when none is intended. You keep saying you feel attacked. that doesn't mean people are attacking you. It means that is how you choose to react to it.

People that argue with you may just disagree with you. You may think that means that they are giving you crap or being snarky when they aren't because of your personal filter.

I caught a cold over the weekend and haven't even been able to focus much for the upcoming histology test. I've been hoping that if I sleep more it might let up and I can just study next week, it's getting worse though 🙁.

I love vet school. And I have an exam tomorrow.

Yes, I know, this feeling will fade...but currently I'm having a great time and enjoying the moment 🙂

I feel the same! It's definitely stressful, but overall I feel good. If anything is going to make me bitter, it's the fact that half of our class is told one thing, the other half is told another. We're still trying to figure out exactly what's going on in anatomy lab in regards to what structures we're graded on for dissection points....

Half our class is sick/getting sick. I did a lot of sleeping this past weekend and it's been getting better. Try to get some rest!
