Cornell c/o 2018 Applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone's financial aid tracking pages updated for the receipt of the FAFSA and PROFILE?
No, mine hasn't yet... But I did receive an email from Carolyn Kobervig stating that my financial aid file is complete, and that I will get an email when my financial aid offer is complete.

Has anyone's financial aid tracking pages updated for the receipt of the FAFSA and PROFILE?

I emailed the FinAid office about this last week. Carolyn's response:

FAFSA’s and CSS Profiles do not go into our tracking system until they are manually downloaded by our IT department from the FAFSA/College Board data bases. We have not started this process yet so don’t be alarmed that they have not been tracked!

I also emailed her about this and she said don't be alarmed, everything needed has been received and that they will begin downloading FAFSA and CSS Profiles next week.

Ok, good deal! Thanks guys! I'm in Ithaca for the info session btw. Amazing campus! Already hit up the Dairy Bar, yum!

Hi everyone! I can't believe I just found this forum... I have been living under a rock apparently. Anyway, I was a first-time applicant this year for veterinary schools, applied to OSU and Cornell and was accepted at both! I am absolutely thrilled. I will be attending Cornell, because it has been my goal school for a couple of years and also because I am originally from Ithaca, so it will be great to be home. I have been in OH for about 6 years for undergrad and after staying with my fiance. Can't wait to meet all of you who will be at CU as well 🙂

hey c/o 2018! congrats! if anyone is looking for a nice, dependable, quiet roommate for next year, my roommate from SGU will be attending starting in June for her 4th year. she would really prefer to find someone to live with but is having a bit of a hard time figuring out where to start from another country. if anyone is interested, please PM me. she has a nice fluffy cat and LOVES to bake!!

Hey guys! Welcome to Cornell CVM! I'm a current second year at Cornell CVM. I tried to find your facebook group but you don't seem to have one yet! (What kind of new students are you!?!?! 😉). Anyway I don't know if any of you are looking for housing yet, but its definitely a good time to start! Here's my little advertisement about my current place:

The apartment is a spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment (#1D) in a complex called Eastgate Apartments, owned by Lifestyle Properties. The complex is full of vet students and only 0.8 miles down the road from the vet school--about as close as you can get!

The apartment is beautiful with wall to wall carpeting, vaulted ceilings, a gas fireplace (which is amazing in the terrible Ithaca winters), and all new kitchen appliances! Dogs and cats are allowed, a new washer and dryer are included, parking is easy and convenient, and recycling/garbage disposal are easy and included! AND they provide all winter maintenance, which is critical!

The only reason we are moving out is because we now have accumulated 4 dogs and 2 cats, and we've decided we need a place with a yard for all of them.

Please check out these pictures if you're interested--ours is one of the top floor apartments:

http://www.lifestylepropertiesithaca.com/properties/eastgate.html

Contact me via email with any questions (my email is [email protected]), and the landlord, Thomas, at 607-256-8920 if you're interested in the apartment! We've been living here for 2 years and we've loved it, especially since there are so many vet students in the complex.

Thanks so much and again, welcome to Cornell CVM!

We should start a Cornell Class of 2018 Facebook group 🙂

Hello to everyone, I have been checking out this tread forever but never posted, I'm on the wait list and was wondering of any of my fellow wait listers have heard anything yet. The wait list kettle said they should let us know by April 15 or sooner and I'm just all kinds of nervous, I love cornell and would love to go there

Okayyyyyyy how many wait listed people are there?? It seems like a scary amount. I am an alternate and haven't heard anything. I love Cornell but don't love the price so I'm not really worried about hearing anymore...

Fellow alternate here! Really hoping for a phone call.. If we hear before April 15th, that would be awesome! Although I'll have to send in a deposit somewhere else in the meantime :/

Waitlister here. Cornell's been my dream since I was tiny and also my IS so tuition is good for me. Hoping for a phone call really soon before I put down my deposit for another school! I talked to Jennifer Mailey and she said they sometimes start informing as early as, well, now, so good luck everyone!

You may be surprised by how much aid they offer you (have they finalized offers yet?) That said, it probably won't beat your in-state rate if you have that opportunity.

I am still waiting to hear about financial aid. Has anyone else heard yet?

That's actually great to hear about financial aid. I guess it isn't over until it's over...

Still waiting to hear back as an alternate. Jen Mailey said financial aid packages should be going out by the end of the month and things should start moving then. I've decided that I'm giving Cornell to the end of May before I definitively chose Penn. Here's to hoping!

I just got my award letter via email, so if you don't have it yet you should soon!

Can anyone give an idea of how much aid that Cornell generally gives? Just got offered and spot and I'm anxiously waiting to hear about the financial aid package..

congratulations! anxiety didn't have to shoot up for long =) it was all loans for me, the exact amount for the tuition. Their reasoning was that since I've had a full time job that I don't qualify for grants this year, but I've been working as a research tech in a city where my salary just breaks even on cost of living (luck for me I got hit with some medical bills)....and the year before that I had a full time job as a vet tech where my full time salary qualified me for food stamps, so I'm not sure where they think I'm hiding my money.

Oh poop. I'm a little worried about Wisconsin now because I'm pretty low on the waitlist.. if I get called off of it then it would be a difficult decision due to the significant difference in tuition.

I just got a call today saying I got an offer off the alternate list. Be aware that if you do get a call you can decline it immediately or say you want time - and they give you about 2 days to decide and put the deposit in electronically!

I have deposited at Tufts but I am still considering my offer at Cornell. On Thursday I'll let you know if I accept or not.

CONGRATS! Glad to hear they're moving! If you don't mind me asking, are you IS or OOS? Also, does Jennifer give any indication how long the list is? I've already accepted U of Florida (thankfully they don't have a deposit), but I need to make final decisions soonish so I can find out if I need to search for apartments in Gainesville or Ithaca.

I am OOS! And no she doesn't.

I was accepted off the waitlist today too!! I'm OOS and am trying to decide between here and UC Davis now. Any input from current students and/or incoming students as to why they chose Cornell/what they like about it would be greatly appreciated!

Davis probably didn't have snow this morning for one. That said, Ithaca/Cornell is a nice collegetown if you're keen on wine, the outdoors, and farmer's markets. The curriculum was a plus for me; I'm missing tutor group now that I am in Block 5 (read: lecture all day). Both schools will make you a great vet though if you have family/plan to stay on the East Coast maybe Cornell is the school for you.

Anyone have any clue about how the waitlist works... I'm dying to get into Cornell off the waitlist but losing hope rapidly since it's been two days...

Just declined my Cornell offer to stick with Tufts. Hope my spot goes to one of you dreaming about the Big Red. Best of luck. If you have any questions about my decision feel free to PM!

So not to be annoying but does anyone know what I should do? I'm holding a spot at another school because thankfully I was admitted elsewhere but I really really REALLY want to go to Cornell and if I hear from Cornell I'll drop the other school immediately. I want to be able to give someone who wants to go to that other school a chance asap but I also want to know if Cornell is done taking people off the waitlist now and if I should start thinking about and being excited about this other school (which is a fine and great school and I'm honored to have been admitted but for various reasons Cornell is much better for me). Other people have suggested that I call Cornell and ask if they're still going through the waitlist but I don't want to annoy them or something.. opinions?

I got the impression from Jennifer Mailey that she hadn't called that many people off the list yet. She gave me 2 days to decide - if she's giving batches of people two days to decide at a time then maybe you should wait at least a few more days. Also, didn't someone say a substantial number of people got off the waitlist last year?

Yeah people have been saying that which is maybe what got my hopes up so much and now I'm super nervous because I've been daydreaming about Cornell since I was waitlisted. Okay yeah I can wait a bit I suppose.. thanks! If anyone else knows anything don't be shy about offering it up/advice is welcome 🙂

Hold a spot at your current school - It's yours for now (especially if you put a deposit on it). The waitlist will continue to move even into Late July so keep planning on attending that school and keep an ear open. If you get admitted off the waitlist you will have enough time to pull off Plan B and come to Ithaca (this happened to an individual in my class).

I am in a similar boat. I was accepted to my second choice and waitlisted by Cornell. Cornell is my IS school and the lower tuition would really be great. Last year Cornell went through their entire waitlist and even called some people that had initially been rejected. As you can imagine, this raised my hopes considerably. However, I have to start making decisions such as housing, roommates, and transporting all my stuff soon. I love Cornell, but I made the decision to wait until May 1st, after that, I am fully committing myself to the school I have a spot in. Hope my little spiel helps you to not feel alone. Not sure if it will make you worry more, but I hope it helps!🙂

That's me as well 🙂 I'm excited wherever I wind up, but it's hard not imaging that the phone will ring at any given minute. I'm super excited to go where I've been accepted, but it's so much more expensive, and honestly not where I've been dreaming of for 12 years. But by hook or crook I'll be a vet even if not a Cornell alum, so there's that. 😀

I contacted Jennifer Mailey today and she said that she's pretty close to filling the class, and that she's hoping to have it set in the next two weeks. Not sure how much that helps anyone, hah, but I guess it means they're still going to be making calls!

wow.. I just wish we knew how many people were on the waitlist/if they ranked us!

I feel the same way sewak. I think my nerves have reached there limit, yesterday I had a dream that Jennifer Mailey called me !!! And of course my alarm clock went off before she could say anything but my name, lol. Cornell is also my dream school and I love the program, maybe we all will be hearing from them soon! Good luck everyone!

Ahhhhhhh!!!! I'm starting to get excited! Anyone familiar with the Village apartments? It's so scary trying to nail down a place when you can't see if it in real-life. Either way, I'm looking forward to the next couple of months! So crazy it is actually happening!:soexcited:

Anybody know anything or hear anything...?

Anyone have any suggestions regarding the "suggested textbook" list? Kinda want to figure out which books would be useful and which ones to skip.

Young, B., 2006 Wheater’s Functional Histology, A test and color atlas. 5th ed. ($68)
Dyce, Sack, Wensing. 2010 Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy. Great comparative text, widely used ($130)
Evans, 2012 Miller’s Anatomy of the Dog. (aka "Big Miller’s) ($130)
Evans and de Lahunta, 2009 Miller’s Guide to Dissection of the Dog (aka "Little Miller’s") ($55) (for illustrations only)

A medical or veterinary dictionary (Dorlands’s ($60), Stedman’s ($45), Balliere’s ($40), Dox Melloni’s ($50), etc.)
Thrall, 2002 Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology 3rd ed. Required for Course V ($99)
Boyd, J.S.&C. Paterson (2001) Color Atlas of Clinical Anatomy of the Dog and Cat 2nd ed. (new $225; used $50)

The only book that I think is a must have would be Little Miller's; you will use it for Block 1, Neuroanatomy, and Applied Anatomy to say the least. The other books are nice (I liked Dyce) but there are plenty of copies in library for you to snag during working hours. As for a medical dictionary, I would skip that as you can Google the word and get an accurate answer just as easily (they too are available in the library for use though).

Bottom line: Get Little Miller's, then try out the other titles in the library first. If you find yourself liking something (and you want to study outside of the library) considering purchasing a copy online. Save $$ where you can.
