CSU will give people a second chance if they have GPA problems early on. If a person fixes their GPA issues, shows improvement (only upward, no more slides backward), they will consider your application! 🙂 Last 45 or so really count!

If you get put on the waitlist - but you don't get a spot this year; does that mean you are accepted next year? In other words, does it mean you are accepted, either this year or next. Or does it just mean you are a 'back up for this year only?'.

It means that you are a back up for this year only. If you do not get a spot this year; you will have to re-apply next year. Good Luck!! :luck:

Denied, as I expected. At least the waiting is over and I can move on to obsessing about the other schools.

Dejected as expected. With average stats and less than a 1% chance for OOS to get in, it's kind of expected, but you gotta try!
 
Anyone apply to the dvm/mph program? Acceptances? Rejections?
 
Does anyone know if it is acceptable to email and inquire as to ones position regarding waitlist ranking? The update to the portal did mention that alternates were ranked.

Here's a quote from the admissions portal: "College policy prevents release of ranking information, and there are few alternate offers made until after the response date of April 15."
It sounds like they're not going to tell anyone their rank but I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one asking.
 
Ugh!! I can't believe I didn't see that, I swear I've read the portal like six times. *embarrassed* Must have been too excited.

how come I have not received an email of my decision from Colorado?? has everyone else (besides alternates) gotten emails?
 
OOS alternate. Last year, looks like one person got in from waitlist to CSU-one person that posted on SDN anyway. On April 15th.
 
Does anyone know when the deadline is to accept or deny the offer of admission?
 
I think it's in April some time (15th?) for all schools. Some kind of gentleman's agreement amongst them.

Yep, April 15th is the day for all the schools you applied through vmcas.
 
For what it's worth, I did get an e-mail at about 11 am about my rejection (after I had already seen it on the status update).

Congrats once again to those of you who were accepted or put on the alternate list! I guess I thought that a handful of people had gotten in off the alternate list last year, but I have no actual evidence of it. Fingers crossed for you, but I hope you have other good options so you aren't totally in limbo waiting.

MinnerBelle - I had sort of glazed over your story in my manic impatience yesterday, but rereading it now really makes me especially happy for you! Would you mind sharing what the organization is and where in Colorado they are based? Since I will apparently be looking for some new things to diversify my experience in the next year, perhaps they would be an interesting organization to volunteer with!
 
So, I am still waiting for my CSU decision....January 8th is the date I was given and I just realized that I have to work that morning at 7:15. I normally get off at 1:30 but there is a staff meeting that day so I will not get out of there until 3:30. I am going to go insane at work that day. I hate the waiting. I was hoping they would at least let me know how I rank with the other OOS applicants since they consider WICHE applicants in the OOS pool also; just in case I do not get in through WICHE, but it looks as though they are going to make me wait until the last possible second. I am just living through all of you! I am enjoying watching all of my fellow 2014 SDNers get their acceptances and interviews. Congrats to all who have gotten an acceptance/interview. :claps:

And to those who have not gotten an acceptance or interview I wish you the best of luck!!! :luck:

January 8th was the day you were given for what?
 
Hello All,
I am new to student doctor, but I wanted to share with all my fellow alternates what I have heard through the grapevine. SUPPOSEDLY the alternate list for out of state students contains a couple hundred names. However, before there is mass freakout, there is a PVM student currently at CSU that was originally #175 and got in off the alternate list. (This person got in a few years ago when CSU would disclose where you were on the list, sadly they changed that policy.) I think a lot of people reject their space once they find out that they have gotten into other schools, so the list gets smaller as time goes on. I have no idea about in state students (which is sad because I am one) or the amount of people on that list. I have also been told that the amount of people that are accepted from the alternate list varies greatly from year to year, so there is no way of telling how this year will swing.
I did send an email asking if someone would disclose the number of alternates there are. I will write if I find out anything.
For those who got in- Congratulations! I am sure you have all worked extremely hard to be where you are. I hope you enjoy your summer and live it up!!
 
I was accepted off the waitlist on April 15th of last year (via email). They definitely will not give you a rank so I wouldn't recommend calling to ask. I do know that 5 of my classmates were OOS alternates and since most people aren't really open about it....I am sure there are more. CSU is an expensive school, I suspect that the expense alone contributes significantly to the number of people who decline their offers. Plus, multiple offers are common.

Congrats to all those that were accepted and congrats to the alternates as well. With the number of applications that CSU receives it is a huge accomplishment to make it onto the alternate list. 👍

 
This is my first go at applying to CSU. I'm a resident and I've been designated as a CO and non-sponsored alternate. Does anyone have any idea how they go through the wait list? Do they go through CO alternates and then non-sponsored? Just curious to see if anyone knew. That really stinks that they won't tell us our ranks! I know Iowa State publicly notifies applicants what alternate rank they have accepted up to so I'm assuming their alternates know their rank.

Thanks gone2dogs! I don't mind at all sharing the most wonderfulness that is the Gabriel Foundation (www.thegabrielfoundation.org). They are in Elizabeth, CO which is about 1h47min away from CSU according to google maps. I believe it's about 30-45min east of Denver. Hey, if you decide to volunteer with them, I will totally go with you!!! (maybe you can spend some extra time with my birdies!).
 
Sort of related, but I requested an email file review just because I wanted some feedback even though the cycle is obviously not over, and I got some good information from them already.

CSU has a big :xf: from me for the way they have handled the admissions process this cycle!
 
Nyanko, when you request an email review, are you only allowed to send questions that one time along with the request, or can you reply and ask other questions?

Looks very interesting! They are 1 hr, 19 min from me according to google maps. Although I have no birds right now, I have almost always shared my home with 1 or 2 little birdies and always thought that I would someday have a big bird companion although I have little experience with them. I am currently looking into volunteering with a wildlife rehab place and the zoo, but perhaps I'll add them to my list to check into more carefully and see what sorts of opportunities are available. I wish I had time to do it all! Thanks for the info!

I'm planning on calling this week to make an appointment. Not sure if I will do an in person review or phone yet though. Last year I went in person and found it to be a very good experience and I thought really helpful. But now I am scratching my head a bit because I addressed the 2 issues I was told to work on and got rejected again! So I wonder what is wrong with me this year... or if I just didn't do enough to fix the issues from last year.

Either way, I am anxious to hear what I can do to improve for next year. Although I spent a few days last week totally depressed and hating the school, it is still my first choice and I would be thrilled to go there!

So from what I understand, in-state alternates are ranked in both lists. The in-state list has about 20 students. Let's say you are #3 out of 20 on the IS list, the school puts you in the OOS alternate list at what is the equivalent of #3 out of 20. Keep in mind that the OOS list supposedly has a couple hundred students on it. So if you are #3 of 20 on the IS alternate list, and there are 200 in the OOS list, you will be #30 on the OOS list. The school offers spots as they open. If an in-state spot opens up, they go down the IS alternate list in order of rank. If an out of state spot opens up, they go down the OOS list in order of rank. If the next student in the OOS list happens to be an IS student (to refer to the example above, they get to #30, which is an IS student, before they get to #3 on the IS list), they will offer the student a spot as an OOS student. This means that if you accept that spot, regardless of whether you have residency, you will be paying OOS (non-sponsored) tuition for all 4 years. The thing is, Dr. Sherry Stewart told me that last year only one person was accepted off of the in-state list. So, chances are probably higher that you will get an OOS position than an in-state one. SO, if you choose to accept the OOS spot, even though you are a resident, they take your name off of both lists. Even if later in the summer they get to #3 on the IS list (your former IS alternate rank), you will not be offered a position as an IS student because you already accepted a spot as an OOS. Fun times, huh?

It was sent by Sherry Stewart, and she said at the end of the email if I had any questions to let her know. She was very, very encouraging, much moreso than my last post-mortem with UCD in 2008.

I called at the end of last week and they were already in to February for meetings with Dr. Stewart. Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to get in earlier rather than later!

I have always valued your posts, so I figured I would take this opportunity to ask you a question . . .

I have set up a February phone post-rejection interview with CSU. I'm still waiting to hear from three schools, and I'm a bit worried that what CSU says will kill my confidence for upcoming interview(s).

Anyhow, I guess I'm wondering if you think having a phone interview is a good idea mid-cycle. My biggest fear is they'll say something like my letters of recommendation suck, and then I'll be really nervous my three other schools (including IS and first choice) will agree with CSU's assessment and reject me. I suppose it's better to know, but I have a nagging feeling the interview will really deflate my application spirits . . .

Any thoughts/advice (from you, or anyone else out there)? THANKS!
 
Nyanko, I agree, I've gotten a very good feeling about the way the admissions office is run, even if they did reject some of the finest candidates around! 😛 Even with 1700 applicants, they responded very rapidly when I emailed them about a transcript issue this fall and thanked *me* for following up.

Hey Moosenanny,

I know this question was directed to nyanko who will most likely write this much more eloquently than myself, but I thought I'd chime in. Is it too late to switch to an e-mail review instead of a phone review? I was much too devastated to do an phone review (I thought I'd burst into tears) so I opted to do a e-mail interview instead. I asked Dr. Stewart a few questions regarding my application and asked to have a general review. If you waived your right of access, you will not get any information regarding your letters of recommendation. She returned my e-mail within a few days and laid out the facts very kindly. It was, of course, disappointing to see the weaknesses in my application (some that I had never even considered to be weaknesses), but Dr. Stewart did a great job of also pointing out my strengths.

The reason why I ask whether or not you can switch to an e-mail review is because you can simply save the e-mail without reading it if you're afraid it might be too much during such a stressful time. Once you're accepted to a school, you can read it just for some pure masochistic fun, or simply delete it. If things don't work out this year, you can read it to see areas in which you can improve.

I think the important thing to know is that there were just so many applications this year for so few spots. You were probably a fantastic applicant but with the sheer volume of applicants, many of us were not as lucky as some. However, there's good news ahead. 👍

Actually, the email file review I did definitely made me feel a lot better and more relaxed in a lot of ways, if that makes any sense. I'm sure it has a lot to do with your individual case, but I mean, for me it was mostly "You're a solid, competitive applicant but we just had a very high number of appplicants!" which helps a little, you know?

(obviously there was good, relevant feedback too, but that was the general tone of it)

Oh and if you waived your right of access to your LoRs don't expect to get any feedback on them.

I just figured a phone review would be preferable because it would allow me to ask specific questions in response to the direction in which the review is going (rather than thinking up a list of questions to email in advance before knowing what they're even going to say). And honestly, I would never have the self control to wait to read that sort of email. In theory it's a great idea, but I wouldn't be able to help myself!!! Props to you if you could conquer that sort of curiosity 😉

I find Dr. Stewart to be very helpful but practical in her advice. I would recommend a phone interview.
 
I think I may be too much of a weanie to ask for a file review. Knowing I suck is one thing but having someone tell me would me worse🙄

NO! The file review was the BEST thing I did during the application process. Seriously, Dr. S will give it to you straight and doenst judge at all. Im pretty sure that I got into CSU (on my second app cycle) because I followed her advice to a "t". Dont let fear stop you, use it to push yourself forward. Good luck!
 
I think it's worth applying and not getting accepted to be able to review your application and make improvements where necessary. Obviously it's more fun to be accepted out right, but I'm thinking of it as a win win! 🙂
 
I guess my hesitation is that I am pretty sure I will not be re-applying next year so I am not sure it is anything but a waste of everyone's time.

It is great to see everyone so positive on here. I am such a pessimist, and this kind of stuff gets me down.

Do the file review. When you change your mind about this, you will be glad that you did.
