CSU c/o 2019 applicants, where y'at?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm worried that I'm looking in the wrong place, too... We are talking about the VMCAS portal, right?

Non-sponsored alternate. Not sure what that means....

I'm also a non-sponsored alternate. OOS, notified through portal (no email).

Same here; I'm also from out of state with a GPA higher than 3.4 if that helps. And dirdanddog, I think that means you're waitlisted.

Yeah....I know it sort of means waitlisted. But I know at least 3 people who have been 'wait-listed' by CSU in the past and never heard anything back so..... * sigh *

So how it works with this alternate business:

sponsored alternate list and non-sponsored, two lists, think there may also be a wiche alternate list as well.

Non sponsored basically means you pay out of state tuition, sponsored means basically in-state tuition.

For the non sponsored list, from my expereinece, nothing really happens until April 15th when everyone has to turn in decisions to all the schools about where they will be attending. Then about half way through the day on the 15th, things get very active and a bunch of alternates are offered spots. Most of the IS people on the sponsored list are also on the non-sponsored list and are more likely to be offered a spot than the OOS people. For the non-sponsored list, they generally offer 4 people a spot before it is accepted, so that list moves fast. The calls tend to go out a few days after the 15th as well then kinda dwindle out to an occasional offer. I think there probably is another flurry of activity on April 30th since that is the deadline for the alternates who were offered a spot on or around the 15th to let CSU know if they will be accepting the offer. Its nice because you have a few weeks to think it over.

You can be offered a spot off the alternate list up until the 1st day of the 2nd week of class. This year, that was the first week of Sept..... so a long & anxious wait may be ahead. 🙁 If a IS person or anyone takes the non sponsored offer, they are stuck as a non sponsored for all 4 years, no way to switch to sponsored. No exceptions are made on this.

Sponsored list doesn't move much at all most years. If you're not in the top 5..... in my opinion, there is not too much hope, unless a bunch of IS people give up their spots, which isn't at all what usually happens. Same waiting period as non sponsored. It seems they do make some sponsored calls before April 15th if a spot opens up. This last year, I know of two people who were offered sponsored spots off the alternate list prior to April 15th.

I was called and offered a non sponsored spot about 10 minutes into the phone call offers on April 15th last year, so I was thinking I must have been pretty high on both the sponsored and non sponsored list... but waited and waited and fretted and waited and nothing. I declined the non sponsored offer after doing the math on how in debt I'd be. 🙁

We weren't told actual numbers, but from what we were told, the sponsored list is around 15 people and the non sponsored is more like 100 maybe 100+. In past years, they have gone clear through the non sponsored list and started calling previously rejected people, but that is definitely the exception and isn't the norm for most years. I only know of two years when that happened.

If they never get to your name, you never hear anything... except for some emails reminding you to send transcripts or inviting you to PVM day when you get to tour CSU with the other alternates and people who were offered a spot and are deciding where they want to go.

And that is pretty much the gist of everything I know about all that. The best of luck to my fellow alternates! May you stay sane and hopeful.

Any in-staters still not have their portal change yet?

Congrats to everyone who's been accepted! Nothing on my portal yet (I'm Canadian, so international applicant).

dang they got all of us...it has not been a good week for me...2 (3 if you count not hearing from washington yet) rejections and 1 waitlist...already looking at other career options

Looks like I'm rejected, on to the next school! Good Luck guys!!

Rejected as well. Good luck to those accepted and on the alternate list.

So how do OOS applicants go about asking for a file review? Is that over the phone or email? Does CSU even do file reviews for applicants?

I had a missed call at 11 this morning that left a voicemail requesting i call back (have yet to do so). Portal changed sometime around 1:45pm, as that is what my email is time-stamped. THIRD time in-state applicant!

To all of you that had to read, "regret to inform you..." I understand =[ it hurts, it sucks, and it really makes you question a lot of things. If you ever need to talk with someone about it or just vent to a willing ear (or eyes, since we're all reading this), please feel free to PM me!

The important thing: in order to keep moving forward, you have to get up only once more than you've been knocked down. Never give up. Just believe!

I'm going to fret until Monday now... I thought all of the decisions went out at the same time

Boo... Denied. But I still have an alternate offer for the DVM/MPH so hope isn't completely lost yet...

Sigh. Oh well. Three more schools left...

I got the rejection notification via the portal late yesterday , bummer! Congrats to everyone who got in!!

Hello fellow applicants, I'm new to SDN and I too applied to CSU. I was notified via the portal on 12/19 that I am a non-sponsored alternate. I can't believe I got on the alternate list, I am excited, but also anxious due to the "waiting" period. It sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat, I wonder how long the alternate list is? My interests are in wildlife medicine and CSU certainly does have a lot of unique opportunities!

I think that list is usually 50-100 from what I gathered talking w/Dr Hardy last year. Congrats on being an alternate!!!

Thank you Fish Pixie!!! I may be farther down the alternate list due to my final year's GPA trend and my GRE score. I'm really hoping the list moves though! Are you on the alternate list as well?

Yes I am. 🙂
It tends to move along pretty fast, but, nothing will probably happen w/the nonsponsored alternate list until April 15th, then things start hoppin. They usually offer 4 people the same non sponsored spot before it is filled. They also sometimes overfill spots & then I've heard that they offer people guaranteed sponsored spots for the next year if they're willing to wait a year.

I didn't know they did that if they overfill spots, that's pretty cool of them to do! I hope the list keeps moving for us! Are you on the sponsored alternate list?
