CSU c/o 2020 applicants, y'all ready for this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Future classmates: Pretty much immediately during orientation I'm going to make it clear to everyone that they don't need to tiptoe around me or be weird because of the disability. But one of you from SDN should make a remark during orientation week like "Hey, can we get some more time to sit down and relax? It's not fair that w2vm gets to all day."

That should clear the air 😀

You are indeed an awesome human being 🙂

In case anyone is still lurking on the wait list....I just got a phone call with an offer! I am most likely accepting it.

So, I'm in class right now, but I just got a call from 970-491- 6163. It's a Fort Collins area code. Anyone have any ideas about what it might be

Looks to me like a CSU #....better check that voicemail!

I got an OOS offer today! Unfortunately, I will be declining it, but I'm happy that means someone else will get an offer too 🙂

Just got off the waitlist today! Am deciding between Colorado and Tufts now... does anyone know if Colorado is particularly good in equine medicine? I have heard that and was wondering if this was true or if anyone had any input on that

Congratulations on getting off the waitlist!

As for your question (and, I should warn you, I am not much of a horse person, so a lot of this information came to me secondhand from people who are more interested in it than me - and if anybody reading this would like to correct me, please do): CSU has a pretty strong equine caseload, in addition to a lot of pretty cool research being conducted using horses. There's an Equine Reproduction Laboratory (ERL) where they do a lot of repro research and an Equine Orthopaedic Research Center (ORC) (they do orthopaedic research and sports medicine predominantly). There's also an Equine Field Service, but pretty much everywhere has those.

They also just received funding to establish an equine-specific veterinary teaching hospital, though I'm not sure when it'll go up.

(Just a caveat, the following numbers were pulled from a report that CSU put together for the AVMA when they did their site visit earlier last year):
Their equine caseload has gone up by about 15% in the past five years or so, though I think it varies from year to year. The caseload each year at the teaching hospital itself is about 2,000 animals, with I think around 500 of those eventually being surgery cases. There are another ~2,000 cases a year from farm calls.

However, all of those things aside, you'll get a good education at any of the places you go to school, and any accredited vet school will give you more than enough education in regards to equine medicine. Something like surgery requires a lot of specialty work after you get out of vet school anyway, and if you'd like to specialize in equine surgery (or other types of surgery) then most of your surgical education will happen then anyway. I'm not sure if there's a significant price difference between Tufts and OOS CSU, but that's definitely something to consider as well obviously (I feel like I'd be remiss to not mention it, with how often it's discussed on these boards).

Anyway, congratulations again! Good luck on your decision 🙂

Is rejecting a non-sponsored offer this year going to hurt my chances of receiving a sponsored offer next year? I am in state and was waitlisted and then offered a non-sponsored offer, but I don't want to go at that price. I'd rather wait a year and try to for sponsored.

My two cents for IS being offered OOS.....hard decision, and everybody has different life situations. I did just get an email from my loan company letting me know how much interest I'm already accruing each month... and I'm just talking about this year IS loans & loans from my masters....woa.
I'm soooooooo happy I didn't take the OOS & it worked out for me. You should see if you can talk with the DVM financial advisor, Chad. I talked to him and had him run the numbers for me of OOS tuition vs IS before I declined the OOS offer the 2nd time and it made the decision easier for me. Most of us aren't use to dealing with this amount of $$; it's a whole new financial world when you start putting real numbers to it, especially the interest.

So you rejected two OOS offers and that didn't hurt you? They eventually gave you an IS offer? I just rejected and OOS offer this year and I'm worried they will not want someone that rejected them? I'm from Colorado.

I've personally known a few people who rejected an OOS offer and were still accepted later. I don't think they really hold it against you.

Does anyone know how long Colorado gives you to make a decision for accepting a spot off the waitlist?

A little over a week, currently freaking out haha... looks like you would be deciding between Tufts and CSU too?

Yeah I mean I have noooo clue where I am on the CSU waitlist haha probably not that high but, I would definitely consider it if I got in!

Are there any current students who wouldn't mind answering some questions about the school? In particular I'm interested in research and lab animal medicine.

Current students, can you tell me about how the books/lecture material works?

I'm thinking ahead to what devices I'll need and how I'll do things because I'm totally digital when it comes to schoolwork.

Are you able to obtain all the lecture material for a class digitally at the start, or do the professors upload lectures and change them often before class like some of mine did in undergrad?

Do you need any physical texts or can you get by with digital copies of everything?

I don't think they are really following this thread. Either way, I think the answers to your questions completely depend on the class/professor. In my experience with the vet professors (undergrad), you don't usually need hard copies of textbooks. The lecture material is often uploaded to Canvas, especially by the younger professors, but that is not always the case.

In anatomy, we had a hard copy lab book for our notes and everything, including some diagrams to draw on, Virtual Canine, and then online resources. We never used the textbook, which was only recommended. As for when I sat in some junior vet labs, they did not use textbooks during the lab (at least). To me, if you don't use it in the lab you do not need it as a physical copy.

But, for those who will be CSU 2020ers, here is the link to the GoogleDrive: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8z7fwvFTEyeenFfMWk2SHlPdW8&usp=sharing

If you join the FB group, you can be added to the list to edit the folder.

You will have access to all lecture material in digital format. Professors do change lectures last minute, but the majority will upload the material at the start of class and give you a chance to download it. In addition, you have access to past years lecture notes via the T drive. I believe most of the books are available via the library in digital format. If you so choose, some classes will have printed notes that you can purchase prior to the start of classes (other classes without printed notes for purchase can still be accessed digitally and printed prior to class). I am completely digital with lecture material as well as books/reference material and have never had any issues.

So to access the Facebook group you need to set up an email, and I did that off of the Ramweb website but it seemed to be a rams.colostate.edu while the Facebook group asks for just a colostate.edu email address. are these two different email addresses we have to set up? when you normally log into your CSU email is it like the gmail account that says rams.colostate or something different? Im so confused and can't get onto the official Facebook group haha ugh

I'm late to this, but I'm happy to answer any questions! 🙂 As a DVM/PhD student, I can attest to the research done at CSU and Alaska/Fairbanks. What sort of research are you interested in? There are opportunities to do research, like through the Veterinary Summer Scholars Program, and there are vet student specific grants available as well (Young Investigators Grant Program). As for lab animal medicine, there is a CSU vet club called LARC (Lab Animal and Research Club). I'm not a current member, but the club has hosted cool wetlabs involving lab animals like rodents and beagles and whatnot, as well as lectures with current lab animal vet residents.

Sorry, was lost in vet school land. Looks like others have responded, but to clarify further, no it didn't hurt me at all. I declined 2 OOS offers from CSU for class of 2018 & class of 2019. I went in and talked to them about it to make sure, and they told me that got it, that it's hella expensive for just IS tuition, and some of us really cannot afford OS tuition. For some people it's the right decision to take the OOS, and for some it's not a possibility.

I have heard that there is no need to buy books the first semester. I have a friend who is currently a student and she said she didn't buy any books. With the availability of online material and apparently there is a copy in the cubes as well. My plan is to not get any books and will get them if I feel I need them later.

Okay guys, maybe I am just dumb... Is the lab smock the one we get from the coating ceremony?

Required Equipment/Supplies
  • Lab Smock – your smock will be supplied by the Dean’s Office and coordinated by VetText.
  • Blue Embroidered Clinic Smock
  • Examination Gloves
  • Dissection Kit containing: blunt-sharp Mayo scissors (6 .”), tissue forceps (2-3), rat-toothed thumb forceps (2x3), scalpel handle (#3), scalpel blades (#10), blunt dissection probe, Iris scissors, Kelly hemostats (5 .”)
  • Stethoscope
I am assuming this is the Blue Clinic Smock, here is the dissection kit. Is it just me or is that kit expensive? Do you guys think this would be sufficient? Or, I suppose, I could buy them separately.
