CSU DVM Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One of the vets I work for (a 90s CSU grad) tells me that in her day they tried to match up sibs by home state. I'll let you know if that is the case for me. I hope it is, as that would be really helpful! 👍

Also, an FYI from the email....
[FONT=PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif]If you are interested in having a faculty member as a mentor please
contact SCAVMA at [email protected]. In the email please state the
field of medicine in which you are interested. We will try to match
you the best we can with faculty. There are a limited number of
faculty mentors so space is limited. Please request a mentor only if
you are truly interested. These mentors typically meet with a group
of students a couple of times a semester. They are a great resource
to learn about different career paths in veterinary medicine and
resources that are available to students and practicing veterinarians..

Keep checking your inboxes...🙂

ETA...anyone (besides me, lol) interested in starting up a facebook group for the CSU PVM C/O 2012? *feels like a big dork*

I went ahead and made a facebook group for us. You'll have to activate your colostate email first and use it to join the Colorado State network. It is a closed group, so only members can see the discussion board, the wall, videos, photos and posted items.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9097717948

Join me so I'm not all alone! 😀

By all means, if I ever get of this waitlist, I'm there! 😀

I don't think that is necessarily true. I know when I went on my tour the guide said you can volunteer in the ICU during your first two years to get more hands on experience.

Yes the hospital is not on the main campus, but it is not far (less than a mile - just a few minute drive). You can volunteer in the Critical Care Unit - I do that for 2 2-hour shifts a month, but you can volunteer every week if you want.

Regarding the Big Sibs - I believe that they are being randomly assigned as people accept their offers.

Hi all! I just wanted to add that today we (class of 2011) had a meeting about the big/little sib program and they are assigning sibs in alphabetical order as people accept their offers (e.g. first accept 2012 goes with first A__ of 2011). The program was very unorganized and unsuccessful for us last year so they're pairing sibs earlier this year and are planning more events and stuff for us all to get together and get to know each other. I'm really looking forward to meeting you all and if you accept toward the end maybe I'll be your mentor! 😛

Can anyone elaborate on the grading/ranking system and its effect on getting an internship or residency?

Hello everyone, I just thought I'd say hi, because I'm pretty sure I'll choose CSU for vet school 🙂

Thought I'd revive the thread and get everyone who's going excited to be moving to the #1 ranked city by money mag. in 2006! :luck:

I am PUMPED!!!! I never got an email from my big sibling however...

I'm pumped too! I didn't get anything from my big sib either...

Anyone else going to the visit day this friday?

big sib?? is this only for people who have already sent in the acceptance?

Yes, after you sent in your acceptance and signed the release form to be contacted you are assigned a Big Sib...

The only person I know that got contacted by a big sib is TCVM808... But I'm sure our big sibs are busy with classes and stuff so hopefully the rest of us will hear from them soon.

I wish I could go to visit day, but I have to work 🙁 Is it specifically for incoming students or for pre-vets in general?

I think it is for pre-vets in general, I think saturday is the VTH open house too...

Open house is both Friday and Saturday... it is open to the public... From what I hear, Friday will be chocked full of school children on field trips... Apparently it is a lot of fun, but this will be my first open house... I am just excited that we dont have school on Friday as it is mandatory for all vet students to participate in open house... here is a link with some more information: http://csuvets.colostate.edu/openhouse.htm

Hope to see you guys there!

Hey guys - I have a silly question! I see that people apply to/are accepted to the "PVM" program at CSU. What is this compared to DVM? I assume it's the same, and as far as I know everyone graduates with a DVM, so I'm confused. ??

CSU PVM = Colorado State Universtiy Professional Veterinary Medical Program. I guess the last "P" just gets dropped...

Some other schools are CVM and SVM (college and school, respectively)
Hope this helps Hoodle!

I see - thanks, rex! I'm certainly familiar with the seemingly arbitrary SVM vs CVM designation (I always had to triple-check every envelope I sent for admission to make sure I didn't mess it up!), and I'm used to Penn's VMD, but I wasn't sure about the PVM... I thought for a while it was a Preventative Veterinary Medicine program, because Davis has a MPVM program (Masters in Preventative Vet Med), but then I was confused because so many people were doing what I would have assumed to be a pretty specialized program! It all makes sense now. 😀

So I was talking to our radiologist at the clinic I work at, and she said that the reason they said we would need to plan for overnight stays during orientation week is because we get to go camping!! How fun will that be? 🙂🙂

Yeah, we get to go to Pingree (It's CSU's campus in the mountains off of CO-14 between Fort Collins and Walden, just a bit below Cameron Pass there) it is really awesome up there, it sits in a valley at 9,000+ surrounded by 12,000 & 13,000 peaks, it borders the commanche wilderness area, and RMNP. I love hiking in that area it is one of the best places to hike. 🙂

Pingree was a great time... my class was the guinea pig class for that orientation... it really is gorgeous up there... lots of get to know you activities, but lots of free time to go hiking and such... rumor has it that Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald will be returning to perform for you guys... he was a riot! Its not quite camping... you stay in cabins with bunkbeds... get served actually really good food in the cafeteria... if you have any questions, feel free to ask! I am sure you guys will enjoy it 🙂

do NOT make the mistake of ignoring them when they suggest you should bring your own pillow to Pingree!

Pingree sounds amazing!! Haha, thanks for the tip, catlover. 😉

My hopes are all up for meeting Dr. Fitzgerald now. I'll be the dorky girl asking to take a picture with him. *blush*

I'm so excited to go! Definitely been missing getting in some outdoorsy time since being in college 🙁 I used to go hiking/camping all the time while growing up in Phoenix, but going to school in Cleveland and now Chicago- doesn't leave much opportunity for those things...

Again- so excited to move back west!!! 👍 And to meet everyone.... 🙂

Now I really hope I get off the waitlist!! That camping trip sounds amazing!

Ok everyone, so I took the initiative to make our own facebook group because I was feeling left out compared to everyone else and their school's groups! 😛

Anyways, come join!! 🙂

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=23474999160

Heeey, what is wrong with the group I made? 😉😀 LOL
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9097717948
Join us and bring your pics with you!!

I would have personally invited you, but I didn't see you post on the Final Decision Thread, so I wasn't sure you were decided....😕

Ok- I finally posted on the final decision page! TCVM808, I tried to search on facebook to see if a group was already made but I couldn't find one...maybe it's because the group is by invite only? Would opening it up help us to find others? 🙂

Now that I've decided, I was looking through my info for CSU and saw the blurb about the trip and how we need to make arrangements for 3 days for our pets b/c of the camping trip. But I don't know anyone who could take care of my kitty 🙁 How are other people going to handle this?

My other options for the group are open or secret. Open means anyone can join and secret means the group doesn't show up in search results or member profiles. I think closed is the best option. I know at least one of our members found us through a facebook search. We should be easy to find as long as the person is already in the Colorado State network. It's not strictly 'invite only'...someone can initiate a request and then I approve. Actually, could you request to join? I haven't actually been able to invite anyone yet, LOL. I'm working on it. 🙄

As for the camping trip, I have decided to fly my dog out later...probably in September. I don't know your living situation, but maybe you could consider bringing your kitty out a bit later? Or if not, there are a lot of boarding facilities in the Ft. Collins area. Perhaps you could ask your Big Sib to kittysit.
Sorry, no real ingenious ideas here.

Well I haven't sent in all my stuff yet so I don't have a big sib, but hopefully soon and asking them is a good idea. Thanks-

Along the lines of the facebook account (first of all I'm sorry I somehow skipped over the post in the first place!), I am not able to request to join- it says that I must be invited by the admin. Thats why I thought it'd be best to have it open b/c it's a lot easier for everyone- am I mean, I don't think we're going to get any wierdos pretending to be part of the class because they want to join since we're so cool and all 😉

I believe you are having difficulty joining only because you are not on the Colorado State network yet. Once you get your CSU ID and create your email account, then you can join. 😀

I promise you aren't missing anything yet; it's pretty quiet so far...😛

hey guys, will one of you "invite" me too?! i just made a new facebook account... 🙂

Hello, new to the thread, also accepted to CSU class of 2012! Have any of you had a chance to tour the "cubes", our future home away from home?

Yes, I toured them yesterday... actually I was told yesterday based on my last name I would be in Cube F!

My Big Sib said that I'd probably be in cube E. I am looking forward to a tour, tired of trying to picture it in my mind!

Welcome Eqdtech!!!
Cube? What are these cubes all about?

Cube? What are these cubes all about?

The "Cubes" are the first-year PVM only space in the Anatomy/Zoology. Basically cubes contain about 18 desks in a room at are assigned to first years. We also get some shelf space, a microscope, and each cube also has a fridge and a coffee pot. They are supposed to increase communication and teamwork between first year students, and help us meet other students. Cube assignments are based on last names.

I'm orginally from Ohio, where did you go to school in Cleveland... Case?

Hey! Yeah I went to Case- another engineering nerd 🙄 How about you? From your avatar it looks like you're an equine person, did you know Dr. Genovese?

From what I understand there are 16 students per cube, is that correct?

I actually never went to Case (had several friends go there and had some crazy times on Euclid Ave. 😀), when I was going for undergrad it came down to a choice between Case, Drexel, and a small liberal arts college. The lib arts school gave me the biggest scholarship so I went there 🙂

I think you'll prefer Fort Collins 300 days of sun to Cleveland's 300 days of grey!

Yes, I so looking forward to some sun! On another note- when did you guys get your colorado email address? I sent in my acceptance and everything, but they said that I wouldn't hear back from them until May

I'm sending you the instructions via fb message : )

But where do I find my CSU ID? 🙁

But where do I find my CSU ID? 🙁

You can get the CSU ID from the Office of Admissions. I guess it is supposed to come in the mail, but I never got mine so I eventually tracked it to the Office of Admissions 😀.

Does CSU require a deposit to hold one's place in the class?
