Hey I have a few things.....

1. Congrats to anyone who's been recently accepted

2. Anybody know when the roomate list is going to be sent out, I filled out the form and assumed it was coming last week (Fri.) but wasn't sure

3. When filling out apps for apts. what do you do for employer or the income section on the apps????

4. For those who came from further away....how often were you able to go home. (Like did you go for Thanksgiving??)

5. Finally I'm coming out to Des Moines in may to check some things out....Hopefully finalize living things and tie up any loose ends. May 20-23. Ok that's it for now I think.

Josh

yeah, I got waitlisted, Insight. We'll see what I can do about that. 🙂

Hi Josh,

I just put for the apt. apps that I was a student. They'll understand. If you are working currently, you could put that down, if not, just write in "medical student" and all will be well.

I went home for the 2 weeks of winter break, the week of spring break, and will be going for a weekend in July. I didn't plan early enough for Thanksgiving, so I stayed in Des Moines. The key to cheaper tickets is to plan early. 🙂

Aw, sorry to hear that. Giving them a call to show that you truly want to be accepted can help a lot. Keep us posted! 😀

Lucky,

Who do you use to find tickets?? Just curious.

Lucky,

Most of the time, I use Expedia.com. It's never failed me, and I trust Microsoft, to some degree 😉 I've compared their prices to orbitz, Travelocity, and CheapTickets, and there usually is no difference, plus Expedia just seems a whole lot easier to use. I have purchased tickets directly from airlines, like ATA or United, but their prices are comparable to Expedia's, too. Sometimes, you might find more flight time options by going directly to the airline's website.

Lucky - That's usually what I do too for the most part but wasn't sure if you had any other suggestions....you never know. Also I PMed you too.

To all who are wondering I asked and they are sending out roommate assistance list tomorrow (Fri.).

I get to go see the Paw Sox game this weekend (AAA Red Sox for those who don't know).

Josh

The room mate list came out today and all I have to say is WOOOOHOOO! There are 20 pages of females vs. 13 pages of males. Looks like a 65% ratio. Looks like Des Moines just started to look better!!! 😎

I've just started with Student Doctor, but I just wanted to say that I will also be starting at good ol' DMU in the fall. Can't wait, although I'm a little nervous as I have been out of school for 6 years. I hope it's like riding a bike.

I tried doing that a few months ago and they just told me to send updated stuff to the DO application website or something to that effects. I tried that but it didn't work 🙁

Ah yes, the WCC. It is the pinnacle of your first year in medical school. You invite your family, your friends, whoever can afford tickets to fly into Des Moines (or drive, if that fancies them) to watch you take a white coat that you received the previous week and have a faculty member place it gently upon you. It's a crowning moment.

Actually, I didn't go to mine. But that's what people described it as. Your guests will have a chance to meet your classmates, and be proud of you, take lots of pictures. And you get fed good food.

I actually don't usually like to go to things like that. I really didn't want to go to my Master's graduation but it looks I'm going to because usually my parent's (Mom in particular) want me to and again with the WCC my mother and stepfather are using that as a first excuse to come out to IA and check things out and see me and do the being proud thing. So I'm trying to give her an idea of when it will be until we find out specifics. Thanks!!

Josh

Hey Josh,

Yeah more than anything, it's for your loved ones to come and get a chance to see you and meet your new buddies. That's a big reason why they schedule it to be a few weeks into the semester rather than at the beginning, so that your family gets an excuse to come and see you after you moved here. You also get a little pin for your white coat. It's neat 🙂

Congratulations to everyone who made it in for the next school year and are ready to join us at DMU. I just wanted to tell you that anything luckystar tells you should be taken as gold, she may be the smartest person alive. Don't worry about school they ease you in extremely well and before you know it you are taking 2 or 3 tests a week without a problem. Enjoy your summer of freedom!!!!!!!! 🙂

If you had to meet only one of us, it would have to be the Cremaster. Because then you can witness a rare variety of med student, the cool genius. I mean, the dude hasn't even graduated from college yet (because of early acceptance). And he can quote every single line from every South Park episode ever created. Amazing. 😱

Hey luckystar and any other current DMU students:

What's the book that you have to read during "Intro to Ost. Med."? Just curious.

Thanks,

Seth

"The D.O.'s; Osteopathic Medicine in America" by Norman Gevitz.

My copy's available if anybody wants to borrow it 🙂

Before you get any other books for classes, ask around or look on SDN to see which ones are recommended. There are definitely a few that almost everybody agrees to be most helpful. Maybe I'll start a recommended book list for DMU after the 2 exams tomorrow :scared:

Ooh yeah...I almost forgot! JP (aka Popoy) is currently a third year here, and last summer, he emailed all of us SDNers a copy of the notes for the IOM class. They should be on the shared network drive when you guys start the semester, but if you'd like to have them now, not that I'm encouraging anybody to do anything school-related before due time, PM me your email address and I'll forward them. I promised JP I'd continue the tradition! 😎

Can those that have been accepted to DMU post your Cum. GPA, Sci GPA, and MCAT. I just want to get a feel as to where I stand. Thank you. Oh and what is their grading system?

My book is also available, and definetly don't get too gung-ho when it comes to buying books, most of the time packets are put together so well you don't need them unless you want them as a reference or you would rather read on your own and not listen to the prof's. Also luckystar and I are quite fond of most of the BRS serious of books that are helpful in studying for boards and giving a general overiew over some of the class stuff now.

The dmu grading system is based on a 4.0 scale and I think, and is mostly calculated as it would be at any institution. You take roughly 50 credits your fist year but they are spread out so don't stress too much about it. And remember first two years of grades are important but not as important as how you perform on rotations!!!!!!

Before anyone decides to Attend DMU, I want to let people know that one certain prominent professor is dating one my classmates. What a travesty. I don't want to name names to prevent embarrassment of my classmate and that certain famous prominent professor who everyone knows and admires.

Actually, we all did "special favors" for this professor. Didn't you get your turn?

You are an idiot. I enjoyed not seeing any of your posts for a while there. Why don't you go back into your shell please. I'm pretty sure I can speak for most of us who have been witness to your obnoxious posts.

Creamfly -
I have my interview this week, so I don't know if I will be there next year or not. However, I just wanted to let you know that I've got a goofy background and haven't been a full time student since 1999. Hopefully you won't be alone!

You'll do great!

I would like to thank the moderater for not posting "ripulpancal2000" comments on so-called current states of DMU. There is no fact to anything this imposter says and for some reason he/she is hiding behind another students good name. Very unprofessional and immature to be spreading lies on a site that very influential people see everyday. It is one thing to present constructive information...and another to tell outright lies. So please, stop!

I also would like to thank the moderator for taking ripulpancal2000 statements off this website. This person lacks the maturity to be a quality physician. All medical schools have their faults and no school is perfect. Sure, there have been many problems at DMU for the last few years and many problems with clinical affairs. I question the professionalism of select faculty members in the manner they deal with students and other faculty. I also question the effectiveness of the curriculum as far as preparing students for boards and clinical rotations. It may be true that someone in the faculty is dating a student at the school, but I don't think there is anything wrong with this. I don't think this is the only school to have such problems. There are more constructive ways of expressing your viewpoint against your school than to embarrass it on a national website. Again, I thank the moderator for taking ripulpancal2000's statements off this website.

Thanks. Hope things go well for you. The interview process their is very laid back, nothing to worry about. No suprise questions at all. If you have any questions just PM me and I'll be glad to answer them.

I'm a first year here and DMU and I came on early acceptance leaving college a year early and I have had a great experience here. I don't regret leaving undergrad early at all. The curriculum is set up well, and the professionalism within the classes for the most part is the same as it would be anywhere else. You can't really rely on other people's opinions, you need to come get a feel for yourself. Some people are mad about tests, rotations, or even professor they don't like which would obviously lead them to make negative comments about the institution. Every school has its up and downs just pick the one you feel that you fit the best!!

The week before my interview I got a call from a DMU alum that told me that most everyone interviewed at DMU gets accepted. I know this can't be entirely true, since there are many more interviews than students...Is there anyone that can give any specific numbers on this?

I had a great day at Des Moines. I have noticed here that many people refer to the friendliness of staff/students as creepy. I was expecting hugs and flowers. Turns out, it must be an Iowa thing. I am a native Iowan and to me, it just seemed like going anywhere around here. So, to any of you who think it is some weird ploy to attract students, it isn't. It is just good ol' midwest hospitality. 🙂 If you move to Iowa, you can expect life in general to be like that.

Congrats to all of you who have already been accepted. I'll try to be patient as I await the news! 😳

Genya told me that about 75% of interviewees are accepted.

Hey, does anyone know who galaxy1 is? I got a concerning PM from him regarding the quality at DMU and I wanted to know whats up.

Galaxy1 says he/she is a 3rd year. From what I know, they had some problems with their first and/or second year curriculum, but to me, and I'd venture to say that many of my classmates would agree, DMU has done a good job at responding to complaints and making our education better tailored to our needs. I highly recommend that anybody who has concerns about anything to contact Student Services at DMU because I'm sure somebody would be more than happy to answer any specific questions you might have. You owe it to yourself to choose a school that "fits" you.

Argh. Last week my fiance and I decide to take a road trip to Des Moines to look for apartments. On the way we stop and have breakfast with my grandmother in Indiana. We are sitting around the kitchen table chatting and she asks me..."So after this can you go on to be a real medical doctor?" WTF. I mean what part of DOCTOR is not understandable? Grrr. I just looked at her and said "No, this means I am going to be a REAL doctor." I went on to explain that I could prescribe medication, treat patients, and yes even perform surgery! I think at that point she must have realized that she hit a nerve because the conversation quickly switched topics. Has anyone else had this happen to them by a friend or family member?

No, not the exact thing but when I hav said that I will be going to medical school someone has enevitably added "well..DO school". It is frustrating but I think it is really due to lack of understanding rather than any true malice. Still it is irritating none the less.

I have had something of that nature happen to me also. I came to DMU on early acceptance so I actually graduate from undergrad this sunday (please hold your applause), but when I go home and my friends ask me what I've been up to I say I am a first year med student. Then when I tell them I am going to be a DO they ask if I'm going to be a real doctor. I say the same things you guys do..........I can do surgery, I can give narcotics, I can work pretty much wherever I want to. I just always had I have one added benefite I can manipulate the body kind of like a chiropractor but under a whole different philosophy and by using different techniques. Most of them accept it over time, especially after you start doing OMM on them and answering there questions. It's just going to take some more time to get the DO philosophy out, but the problem is slowly being taken care of. Just be ready to inform about the profession, and try not to get to defensive some people just haven't heard about DO's yet!!!!!

I know that this was the last week of interviews - I interviewed last week. Does anyone know what the numbers list looks like so far? I'm going crazy waiting to hear something. Is there anyone else out there that interviewed recently? I know there was a list being passed around by admissions folk while I was there - obviously not shown to those of us who were interviewing. I think my interview went well, but the others there with me all seemed great, too, so it is hard to judge. AHHH!!

Galaxy 1 has posted on other threads about the poor curriculum at DMU and low pass rates on boards. I have a hard time understanding why someone would put down their own school. All of the students and alumni I have met from DMU seem quite happy with their choice. 😕

I even had an alum from DMU interview me at another school, and she spoke very highly of DMU.

Yeah, well I think he/she is rupincal2000 or whatever his/her name was.

Hey to anyone attending this fall. I am looking for a roomate. I will be purchasing a house within 2 miles of school. It will be a 3 bd/2ba. While it is not firm which house it is firm that I will be buying one. I am planning on moving in the last week in July. If anyone is interested or knows anyone who would be, PM me. 👍
