All I can Say is ... What the....

Welcome bacK class of 2010!!!😀
carry on!

Hey 2010,

A few questions for y'all - what is the deal with History of Med? Is it a class you really need to devote study time to in order to do well on the exam? Any comments on that class would be great, b/c it seems like a trivia type class.

Can't say I devoted all that much time to studying for that class, but the test is fairly easy. Read the Gevitz book (if still required) & semi-pay attention in class & you should do fine.

It's always nice to start out w/ an "A" in at least one class though.

I studied the night before the exam and DON'T BUY THE BOOK! If you want a book, I'll sell you mine. "like-new" because it was NEVER opened. Just make more than 12 flashcards for the 50 question test. lol!
Freakin GENIOS!

Anyway, why the hell do they drop 40 new drugs on us the DAY BEFORE an exam? What is wrong with the exam on Thurs of Friday? Is it because the Pts and DPMs have other stuff going on or nothing at all?

Nice. (Cracks open a whole case of monsters)...going to be a long one! 🙁

Could be worse, we could be in residency right now:

80 hours: Twice what a regular 'full time' job requires you to work. Yet, 80 work hours per week is considered 'too lenient' by some standards.

There are 168 hours in a week.
80 hours is 47.6% of 168. You're working for damn near half of the week.
One day off in seven says you need to get your 80 in six.
This means you'll average 13.3 hours per day for 6 days a week.
A first-year resident makes $38,000 - $42,000. Let's use $40,000.
With days off, a resident will work in the ballpark of 4150 hours per year.
With a salary of $40,000 per year, this is equivalent to $9.63 per hour - before taxes.
The federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour.
A resident's salary is 1.87 times the federal minimum wage.
The average citizen in the US sleeps 6.9 hours per night.
After sleep and a regular work day, you'll have exactly 3.8 hours per day to spend with your family, eat, shower, drive to and from work, buy groceries, pay bills, wash clothes, go to the bathroom, have sex, watch the news, read, study, cook, and live.

Have fun.

how are we going to fit Halo 3 in there!?

It used to be over a 100, they just changed in the last few years. The doctors that were against the move said that the new plan would cause patients to suffer in care.

Yes, I remember hearing about that change. And many docs from the good ole days were up in arms about it, like somehow current residents are softies for only working 80 a week. And, I've heard that there are several programs that still violate this rule. Something tells me they may calculate the 80 hours/wk at the end of a month, so 100 hours 1 week is balance by 60 the next. I guess it depends on the specialty somewhat as well. Who knows.

I also remember reading about a study done in the last couple years that concluded docs who are on for 24 or more hours (call, etc.) and sleep deprived have the same reaction time (or was it decision making skills?) as someone with ~.10 BAC or something. Anyone else read this?

Cnn did a documentary recently a little while ago about residents in atlanta and said the what you're saying.

When you reach something like 5 days of sleep deprivation you might as well be drunk; you start to hallucinate, ect. I have gotten to 5 days a few times in my insomniac life and, I will tell you, I saw green monsters and my parents (who are 1000 miles away).

I just thought I'd say a quick congrats to the 3rd years for their excellent board scores this year. I saw that they scored 20 points above the national average - National Avg: 489 DMU: 509

Nice job kicking ass and representing our school so well.

To be truthful, I came across it by accident while I was in Ryan Hall. It was sitting out in open view on one of the secretary's desks. It even broke down how you guys performed on each section compared to the national averages.

sounds good.

I personally thought we were poorly prepared for step 1 boards except for OMM. I believe that most of that avg should be credited to individual self-study rather than education.

also for that residency 80 hour thing, they changed it from 120 or w/e because a resident was so tired he died in a car accident while driving home after a 37 hour stretch and there was legal action. I hear though that most attendings expect you to ignore that 80 hour rule and still push to 110s

I definitely believe that, but to be honest, that's how I assumed it would be no matter what. If you want to do well on an "exam" such as Step 1, you're going to have to put forth the necessary effort and properly discipline yourself. Everyone I know that's done well and met or even exceeded their expectations, did so because they devised an organized plan for studying and stuck with it.

yeah sounds like good advice having a plan.

I'd also recommend to use ONE (or few) sources and know them cold, rather than using 50 sources and just kinda skimming them/going through them once. This has to be the biggest pitfall for med students.

I used first aid and goljan and knew those two sources inside and out (maybe 5 runs through each book) and it helped me break a 643/92 on comlex

everyone i know that used multiple sources and just went through them once hit low 400s or failed.

So take that for what it is.

Fantastic advice, and it's something I've heard from good friends who performed well (whether it be the comlex or usmle). Thus, it's nice to hear it from 1 more person, so thank you!

EBM anyone? I'm 5 lectures in and I have no clue how they're going to get 100 questions out of this material...😕

I might need to listen to the last EBM lecture again (or someone with notepool check it), but I believe they said there's only going to be like 50 questions. I know in the syllabus it says the test is worth 100 pts, but maybe they're just going to weight the test that way?

Can someone confirm this, before I mislead everyone?

From what I understand, it is around 50. But does anyone find 50 questions worth of stuff in these lectures? Not me. PWNAGE is about to take place. :scared:

So I come on here to ask what to do for EBM and I'm glad to find that I'm not the only one who can't see where 50 questions are going to come from (I looked at the notepool, it's 50 questions for 100 points total). Unless he asks about PICO 25 times and then IMRD for the other 25, with a couple of stats questions mixed in, I haven't the slightest idea. 👎

I was at the review and he did in fact say that it was 50 questions total on the exam. by the way...... how in the world do you study for this stuff????????

If you can determine the probability, with a 95% CI, that you will score 100% on this exam then you''ll be ready...

Anybody planning on attending the Job Fair Sept 6-7th? I know it says that all programs are invited, but almost half the list is Rehab Centers or Therapy practices. Seems like the focus is more on PT, which makes sense since they're sponsoring it I guess. Wonder if it's still worth going to...?

Depends on whether or not we get any swag....aka, Stuff We All Get.

Do you guys think there will be any questions about the esophagus? I hope not because I've ignored it completely. Especially Barrets esophagus. I hate that little bastard.

Classic...just checked what we have comming up.
The week of September 3-7 we have 13 GI lectures.:laugh:
Oh yea, that doesn't include monday that is labor day. FYI.

hope not... maybe a quick e-mail to Canby would help you find out?

on a random side note...... why the heck can't I find a Wii anywhere? seriosuly they have been sold out since christmas!+pissed+

I'll do it. I'll take it for the team.

At 46:53 on the GI 10 MP3 you can hear someone ask Dr. Dhanwada that very question and she says: "no, I have no pictures, just know microscopic findings..."

don't know about the rest of them but, she prob. gave the most slides to look at so that is a relief there. Esp. since I printed it out to do the lectures and...well, they are black and white so I can't see the wonderful blue or pink cytoplasm

Last year we had zero exam images for GI

that first test dwanwada had like 14 questions a row that were all "C"
-a gift if you took the risk

I don't know if anyone on here is an Always Sunny In Philadelphia fan, but if so, here's a link to an uncensored preview for the upcoming season:

Personally, I can't wait for the new season.

Good luck studying for GI.

Don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but this was the average in the email from the Dean to the 08's. Could that be what you saw? They didn't calculate our average for a long time. I doubt it's the 09's average. Anyway, if anybody has any questions on studying for boards, shoot me a pm. I broke 700 somehow.

I think you've actually been reading over last year's notes or something because I haven't come across Barrett's or Achalasia at all. I mean, they're definitely not in every lecture, which is cool.

As far as the esophagus goes, I'd doubt there's any questions on it. Realistically, it's as vestigial as the appendix. I do think you should drive to Mercy and ask Dr. Dhanwada and Dr. Myneni if there will be any esophageal questions though, just in case. Oh, and if you could let me know what they say, that's be fantastic.

nitpicky?

Surgeons shouldn't quit their day job and just keep cutting people up. Not write test questions...especially when they contradicted each other in their lectures. Good times. 🙄

Just wait until the end of the year when you get the vaguest of the vague (& even more nitpicky) from the neurologists...you'll be wishing you had those GI exam questions back 🙁

Don't worry, I am sure the average will be 99.95 like it always is.

Yea no kidding. I wonder what our lowest average has been as a class. I'm guessing BM:meanie:

Edit: Ok so maybe it wasn't 99%, but it's still higher than I thought it would be...
