Could be worse, we could be in residency right now:Anyway, why the hell do they drop 40 new drugs on us the DAY BEFORE an exam? What is wrong with the exam on Thurs of Friday? Is it because the Pts and DPMs have other stuff going on or nothing at all?
Nice. (Cracks open a whole case of monsters)...going to be a long one! 🙁
MEDSCHOOLHELL said:80 hours: Twice what a regular 'full time' job requires you to work. Yet, 80 work hours per week is considered 'too lenient' by some standards.
There are 168 hours in a week.
80 hours is 47.6% of 168. You're working for damn near half of the week.
One day off in seven says you need to get your 80 in six.
This means you'll average 13.3 hours per day for 6 days a week.
A first-year resident makes $38,000 - $42,000. Let's use $40,000.
With days off, a resident will work in the ballpark of 4150 hours per year.
With a salary of $40,000 per year, this is equivalent to $9.63 per hour - before taxes.
The federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour.
A resident's salary is 1.87 times the federal minimum wage.
The average citizen in the US sleeps 6.9 hours per night.
After sleep and a regular work day, you'll have exactly 3.8 hours per day to spend with your family, eat, shower, drive to and from work, buy groceries, pay bills, wash clothes, go to the bathroom, have sex, watch the news, read, study, cook, and live.
Have fun.
Could be worse, we could be in residency right now:
how are we going to fit Halo 3 in there!?

Yes, I remember hearing about that change. And many docs from the good ole days were up in arms about it, like somehow current residents are softies for only working 80 a week. And, I've heard that there are several programs that still violate this rule. Something tells me they may calculate the 80 hours/wk at the end of a month, so 100 hours 1 week is balance by 60 the next. I guess it depends on the specialty somewhat as well. Who knows. It used to be over a 100, they just changed in the last few years. The doctors that were against the move said that the new plan would cause patients to suffer in care.

I also remember reading about a study done in the last couple years that concluded docs who are on for 24 or more hours (call, etc.) and sleep deprived have the same reaction time (or was it decision making skills?) as someone with ~.10 BAC or something. Anyone else read this?

I just thought I'd say a quick congrats to the 3rd years for their excellent board scores this year. I saw that they scored 20 points above the national average - National Avg: 489 DMU: 509
Nice job kicking ass and representing our school so well.
thx
i dont know how we did so well, where did ya get that info from btw electric? mueller or was there a post or something
sounds good.
I personally thought we were poorly prepared for step 1 boards except for OMM. I believe that most of that avg should be credited to individual self-study rather than education.
I definitely believe that, but to be honest, that's how I assumed it would be no matter what. If you want to do well on an "exam" such as Step 1, you're going to have to put forth the necessary effort and properly discipline yourself. Everyone I know that's done well and met or even exceeded their expectations, did so because they devised an organized plan for studying and stuck with it.
yeah sounds like good advice having a plan.
I'd also recommend to use ONE (or few) sources and know them cold, rather than using 50 sources and just kinda skimming them/going through them once. This has to be the biggest pitfall for med students.
I used first aid and goljan and knew those two sources inside and out (maybe 5 runs through each book) and it helped me break a 643/92 on comlex
everyone i know that used multiple sources and just went through them once hit low 400s or failed.
So take that for what it is.
EBM anyone? I'm 5 lectures in and I have no clue how they're going to get 100 questions out of this material...😕
I might need to listen to the last EBM lecture again (or someone with notepool check it), but I believe they said there's only going to be like 50 questions. I know in the syllabus it says the test is worth 100 pts, but maybe they're just going to weight the test that way?
Can someone confirm this, before I mislead everyone?

If you can determine the probability, with a 95% CI, that you will score 100% on this exam then you''ll be ready...I was at the review and he did in fact say that it was 50 questions total on the exam. by the way...... how in the world do you study for this stuff????????
Anybody planning on attending the Job Fair Sept 6-7th? I know it says that all programs are invited, but almost half the list is Rehab Centers or Therapy practices. Seems like the focus is more on PT, which makes sense since they're sponsoring it I guess. Wonder if it's still worth going to...?
hope not... maybe a quick e-mail to Canby would help you find out?Classic...just checked what we have comming up.
The week of September 3-7 we have 13 GI lectures.
Oh yea, that doesn't include monday that is labor day. FYI.![]()

I don't know if anyone on here is an Always Sunny In Philadelphia fan, but if so, here's a link to an uncensored preview for the upcoming season:
Warning: NSFW, contains foul language, explicit content, but NO nudity....so if any of that offends you, do NOT open this link.

Do you guys think there will be any questions about the esophagus? I hope not because I've ignored it completely. Especially Barrets esophagus. I hate that little bastard.
nitpicky?
God I love it I can't wait! Bring on the pain!!!!Just wait until the end of the year when you get the vaguest of the vague (& even more nitpicky) from the neurologists...you'll be wishing you had those GI exam questions back 🙁
Surgeons shouldn't quit their day job and just keep cutting people up. Not write test questions...especially when they contradicted each other in their lectures. Good times. 🙄
Yea no kidding. I wonder what our lowest average has been as a class. I'm guessing BMDon't worry, I am sure the average will be 99.95 like it always is.
