Drexel DPMS and Georgetown GEMS

Hello, this is my first post so bear with me. I am interested in the two aforementioned programs and was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with either of them. I have searched these forums for information but came up lacking. Most of the results of the search were similar questions with no replies. Anyways, any help/opinions would be appreciated as well as any comments on other URM or disadvantaged Postbac programs with guaranteed admission. Thanks y'all!

i went to drexel's open house where they talked about their IMS, MMS, DPMS and other post-bacc or master's programs. for DPMS, you have to write an essay on your 'disadvantaged' status i think, have a 3.0 GPA and 20 MCAT (at least a 6 on each section). DPMS students have a conditional acceptance to drexel med but have to retake the mcat and get a 27+ and have an acceptable gpa in the DPMS (sorry but i can't remember what this was) and they do their interviews in jan/feb (?) i think. these students take a combo of grad level and medical classes. the person to contact is loretta walker and her phone number is 215-762-7125. her email is [email protected]. hope this helps. don't know anything about the GEMS at GU, but their website is http://gems.georgetown.edu/.

Actually, for the DPMS program you take some graduate level classes and some classes with the actual MS1 students at Drexel. In order to matriculate into Drexel SOM the following year, you need to maintain a 3.0 in all of your courses and score a minimum of 8 on Biological Sciences, 8 on Physical Sciences, and 7 on the Verbal Reasoning sections of the MCAT (so 23 at the absolute minimum). They are accepting applications now so you need to submit it as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this summer. You have to submit your application to the medical science graduate program and they screen it. If they like your app then they forward it to the Drexel SOM ADCOM and they decide if they want you for an interview. As the above poster said, contact Loretta Walker with any questions. Is it true that they screen for interviews? I have mine coming up soon, and that bit of info does boost my confidence up some. Any advice for the interview?

They do screen for interviews in the sense that not everyone who applies to the DPMS program gets an automatic interivew. You need to meet certain requirements. I just had my interview yesterday, so just to let you know, you will be at the interview day with regular MD program applicants. Also, those applicants will have an interview with a student (in addition to the faculty interview), but you will only have a faculty interview. So don't feel like you're getting screwed when you don't interview with one of the current students. Like I said, my interview was yesterday so everything is still fresh in my head. Let me know if you have any other questions. 😎

Was it more of a get to know you or did they ask technical questions as well (I'm an engineer undergrad so I'm used to "techy interviews" haha)? Also, any idea when you'll hear back? I believe I submitted all of my materials in mid February. Don't worry about it being late though. They told me that as of today, only 5 DPMS people have been interviewed 🙂 I too got an engineering degree in undergrad, so a lot of my interview dealt with my senior design project, my current research, and the integration of what I learned in undergrad and how I will use it in medicine. I share your concern about hearing responses so shortly before the program starts. I was told today that I will most likely hear back from them in 3 weeks (only leaving about 1 month to find an apartment in Philadelphia and get settled in before classes start). Oh well... I suppose it's a little premature to worry about that right now. Good luck to you and hopefully I will see you next month. Shoot a PM if you have more questions.

Lets just say that my gpa stats were borderline for the min requirement... my mcats weren't that much better. (I don't like spitting out numbers but if you really really want to know, pm me) However you really should not stress about that - they do, believe it or not, look at you as a person and take applications on case by case. So if you haven't done so already... apply! Or, if you're waiting to hear back be patient. Best of luck!!

I was wondering the same thing. Also, I know the deadline is this weekend but do you think that if they have everything but my LOR's they will continue to consider me? I was not originally planning to apply till next year but decided what the hell. I haven't asked for LOR's from my professors yet though I have 2 that told me they would do it for me. Anyone know?
