I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!

to start:

1.I also work full-time and have been getting vet shadowing hours at random times through the least 3 years (some months i'll go once a week. other times, like during vacation I'll shadow the entire week everday, etc).

When putting in my hours it only lets me put an average per week and # of weeks and then calculates the total hours. How should I deal with this since I dont have an average per week? Should I just make up the average per week + number of weeks so that it gets close to my total number of hours, or is there some other way to put this in?

2. the majority of my hours come from a large animal vet that I've been shadowing for the past 3 years. I've also shadowed ~100 with another vet at the same practice. These two vets ended up moving to another practice last year and I've been shadowing with them at the new practice now. The new practice also does equine work and I've been shadowing with the equine vets some as well. Do I put this all into one experience section? What about them changing practices should I just list the current practice? Do I break it up per vet I worked with or lump it all into one?

3. I've entered in all of my transcripts. I'm currently taking an animal nutrition course through OK state and I put that in as pending. Once I "finalize" my transcripts can i go back in and change them if needed? For example if I finish the okstate course before my application is submitted am I able to go back in there and update it with my grade and send in the transcript or once i move on to "review and finalize" will I not be able to update those?

In the experiences section, last year there was an option for frequency volunteered that had part time, full time, and then per diem. Is that still an option? What I did for more sporadic experiences was choose per diem, and then my hours per week/number of weeks where how long I was their each time and how many times.

There is still that option, but I have over 60 weeks spread out over the 3 years and sometimes i worked 40 hour weeks and sometimes 8.

I think I'll go with the advice above and just count up how many actual weeks I shadowed there and then divide my total hours by the number of weeks to get an average per week and just go with that.

Another question: I'll be working in Oklahoma for the next year or so, with the understanding that this is a temporary position and that my permanent residence is still in Florida. Will this affect my residency status? All my official documentation - driver's license and license plate, permanent address, etc - will still be for Florida, but I was going to put my current/mailing address as Oklahoma. Is that going to mess anything up for being considered IS for UF?

Well right after current address it asks whether that is your permanent address so you would check no and it asks you about your residency in the "citizenship information" section.

I mean, that is what it looks like you're supposed to do. I can't tell you for sure.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if that "residency information" section referred to IS/OOS residency, or if it was just another part of the permanent address consideration.

You can work on an application on VMCAS and delete it later no problem 🙂 I had like four schools on mine in various stages of completence before I decided to only apply to my IS last year, it wasn't a problem!

The schools supplemental app (if they have one), may require you to pay first before working on them (WSU is like that), so that's the only think that could be an issue if you also wanted to start on those.

Thank you so much! I got so overwhelmed by it all earlier, and was like why does it have to cost so much to apply to each school?! So, do you pay for the application fees when you actually submit it then? I am just trying to figure this all out. Thanks!

I was on it this morning before heading to work, started to plug away at getting my coursework in. Still debating on some schools. Anyone else thinking of Ross or SGU?

Yes, you pay when you submit it.

So VMCAS is open! Hope it works better for all of you than it did for my cycle. Also, I'll be editing PS tonight. Pm for the email.
Hey, they did get rid of PTE (from what I've been told). That's an improvement in itself, right...?

I didn't even use that. Lol
Neither did I, but I definitely didn't envy those who did and were having issues.

Then there were the random glitches (did anyone else have the one where all of the dates for test scores/experiences/everything else were set back a day, or was that just me?), the outages, moving things around in the middle of the cycle with no forewarning or anything, and the unresponsive customer service... yeesh.

Oh. And then apparently my fourth LOR writer couldn't get hers in because the application glitched on her. Thankfully I had my three others in, or else I would likely have been SOL.

Watching this thread makes me remember just how excited I was initially to start VMCAS and how that had turned to complete jadedness by the time I submitted. :hilarious:

OMG I totally forgot about the one day off thing! That happened with all my experiences and test dates. But when I clicked to correct them, it would show the real date I had put in, then go back to being off once I saved it. That was so annoying haha

That is literally my worst nightmare. I'm going to make sure my eLORs are in before August at the latest!

So far so good...the VMCAS website has been slow, but other than that no major issues (yet)!

Good luck everyone :xf:

Quick question: When should we send in the transcript request from our primary university? Im taking multiple summer courses and the last wont end until the first week of August. Do I send in the request after that?

VMCAS will probably be slow for a few days as people all try to get on it at once. It'll get better in a week or two when there's fewer people poking around it at the same time. 🙂

Same goes for the 9/15 deadline - it'll get super slow!

I personally would wait until the courses are finished (saves you the time and money of sending an additional transcript). If you're finished in the first week of August, that still gives you more than enough wiggle room to get everything in place.

Am I the only one who remembers them changing the character count on the PS in the middle of the cycle? I'm not sure if I dreamed that but I swear it changed from 5000 to 4500 one random day and confused the heck out of me.

I also got to tolerate the joy of VMCAS telling me I wasn't logged in, forcing me to log in, then telling me I wasn't logged in again. There was a solid week where I couldn't enter any information on VMCAS. :yeahright:

At least I was never excited to open VMCAS. Last year I didn't even open it until like two weeks after it went online.

So VMCAS is open! Hope it works better for all of you than it did for my cycle. Also, I'll be editing PS tonight. Pm for the email.

Same as @rockatiel. I just finished all of my finals today so I'm free as a bird to look at y'all's stuff.

Is anyone else having the issue at the bottom of the transcript entry screen where all the prerequisites are jumbled all together and unreadable? It doesn't really affect me because I know what my prerequisites are but still...

Also, how do you enter quarters into this thing, there are only fall and spring options.

Finally, do you have to finalize your transcripts and be verified before you can even start on most supplemental apps? That would stink because I'm not planning on finalizing until after summer classes.

  1. I had the same thing happen with the prereqs last year, don't worry about it.
  2. Not sure about quarter systems. Is there not something to click to specify that you had quarters vs semesters? If not consider emailing VMCAS to ask or looking on their website, as many schools (including quite a few of the vet schools themselves) operate on a quarter system.
  3. Depends on the app. Some don't open until mid summer (CSU), others just require you to enter your VMCAS ID to start a supplemental (NCSU), others won't send you a supplemental until they've received your application (Wisconsin), others screen people after receiving applications and offer supplementals to those who made it to the "next round" of applications (I think LSU does this with OOS students?). Check the schools' websites and see if they have helpful links/timelines for you.

I sent my transcript at the end of August last year. I express mailed it so it would get there faster but anyways early August gives you enough room that I wouldn't bother sending it twice. Just wait until your grades are posted and send it along.

Ignore the jumbled pre-reqs. You can see them listed out better in the "program materials" section and that's where you actually have to do stuff with them.

I have no idea how to enter quarters so hopefully someone else can help you on that.

As to the supplementals, it depends on the school.

Yeah I figured thats probably the best bet, thanks! Im just worried my college will somehow mess up and not get it back in time...

Aha! So I wasn't going totally crazy! I remember that, too! I brought it up in the old c/o 2020 thread, but people were telling me that the character limit was always 4500, despite my gut saying otherwise.

I still never saw it say 5000. 😉

I think it was pretty early in the cycle but I definitely remember it happening!

I do remember being rather irritated by it, as well. I'd cut out quite a bit of my PS to whittle it down to 5000 characters, so when I saw that the limit had been changed to 4500... I was not pleased.

Hey guys. So I'm trying to enter my AP credits. On my transcript it has the classes that I got credit for with a P (for pass) as the grade. It also has the term down as Fall 2019 for unknown reasons. Is this "clear" enough on my transcript to put as AP credit?

So I had very little problems with VMCAS right until I hit submit. It said my method of payment didn't work but then it said "oh! JK! Congrats on submitting your app!" and I was freaking out until I got my confirmation

If I remember correctly, my university did something similar (except the classes I received credit for listed a grade of CR, which VMCAS accepted). You should be ok to list them with a grade of P. After you go through review and finalize, you'll have the option to designate those classes as AP credit.

I actually have compliment VMCAS right now.

Instead of giving me a vague copy/paste response to my help ticket they actually responded to me and immediately fixed the date I needed corrected. Much better service than I got last year!

I'm pretty sure you enter "CR" for the grade, and you should enter anytime before college as whenever your first semester of college was.

Under the FAQ they specifically say to list it as CR and then mark it as an AP credit when you "review and finalize" hope that helps.

There is something to click for quarters, and I did that, and all it's giving me is fall, spring, or winter. I'm like hey guys you know that quarter means four right? lol

Sorry for the spam but does anyone know what to do if you have multiple classes with the same title. I don't want VMCAS thinking I retook the course two times or something. It was a three quarter course and I got individual grades for all terms, is that ok?😕

Yep, just enter them all in as they appear on your transcript! Not to discourage you from asking questions, but more so that you don't have to wait for someone to answer, try checking out the VMCAS Instructions pages. I believe it said something about entering classes for quarters (but I didn't really read it since I'm on semesters) and it definitely discussed having multiples of the same class. 🙂

Question: In the general information (section 1) under "other information," it lists the question "Student Reported GPA from Primary School." When I think of the term "Primary School," I think of Elementary School, and last time I knew no one kept track of GPAs all the way back then (unless something changed recently!). From doing VMCAS last year, I'm assuming it means "high school" because I'm pretty sure I remember it listing it as "Student Reported GPA from High School" last year, but I still wanted to clarify.

I thought it meant elementary school too. But according to the FAQ, your Primary school is wherever you earned your bachelor's degree, or your first bachelor's if you have more than one.

This is correct!! Not high school. I thought last year they called it primary institution, but maybe not. Either way it's the primary university you attended.

Ok thanks!

I'm checking the VMCAS FAQ, and this question hasn't been asked. So when checking prerequisites, for humanities, I have a lot of humanities, but okstate only requires 2. Should I only click two humanities, or should I click all humanities present?

I'm pretty sure I just clicked the amount that was required and I didn't have any problems.
