Hi all! I just finished up my senior year, and I’m planning to apply early decision to University of Maryland - Baltimore this upcoming cycle. I wanted to share my stats before the application opens in July for any feedback or tips.

University: Johns Hopkins University
Major: Public Health Studies
Overall GPA: 3.46
Pre-Req GPA: 3.56
GRE: 162 V, 162 Q, 5.5 AW

Extracurriculars: DI NCAA Men’s Lacrosse manager (3 years), sorority president (2 years), Scripps National Spelling Bee production staff (3 years), hospital library volunteer (2 years), health data internship (1 semester), Native American museum internship (1 semester)

Observation hours:
500 outpatient clinic as rehab tech
40 acute shadowing
10 outpatient shadowing
8 sports rehab shadowing

LOR: PT (clinic director where I work as a tech); professor in major; lacrosse coach

Other: Published book chapter on HIV and public health, published medical journal article on diet/nutrition, 510 on MCAT

Applying: University of Maryland - Baltimore (early decision)

I took the MCAT to see how I would do, and I ended up with a pretty good score (top 20%). However, I decided that being a physician was not the right career path for me. I wonder if including it under standardized test scores would help my application at all, at least to make up for my relatively low GPA. My gut feeling is that it would harm my application even though it is a competitive score.

Your stats look pretty solid to me, especially that GRE! Your extracurriculars look good too. I think that if you decide to add in that MCAT score, be prepared to answer questions from interviewers regarding why you took it and why you decided to pursue PT instead. Have something good ready because they don't want to see that you chose PT as a "backup" or anything like that. I think if you explain yourself well and have a good reason then it could give you a one up, but at the same time, the MCAT score on there could be questioned by the people initially reviewing your application before you even get to explain yourself. So, I think it would be a good idea to play through each scenario and decide which risk is worth taking. Hope that helps you at all. Good luck applying!! I think you'll do great!!

I had a SUPER low GPA to apply with and honestly thought it would never happen, and I even had faculty members at my undergrad institution tell me it would never happen. It took me two cycles to get in and I could not be happier with my outcome. If you are like me, just know that trusting the process is key and wherever you get in is where you are supposed to be!

Hello all,
I am applying my second time this upcoming cycle and was wondering if anyone knows a good place I can reach out to to have my essays reviewed. Does anyone know of any sites online or anywhere else that offers this kind of help?

A lot of my pre-PT friends had our professors read their essays. Personally I don't know of any websites, but my mom read all mine and then helped me make changes. It helps to answer the questions (no matter how bizzare sounding) honestly and truthfully.

I'm actually embarrassed to share this since they are so low, but I'll do it to give others hope and show that they can get in with sub 3.0 GPAs

Overall GPA: 2.76 (College was an interesting time in my life l o l)
Pre-Req GPA:2.93
GRE: 149V, 151M, 3.5 W

Volunteer/Work experience:
PT Aide @ outpatient clinic: 1 year, 500~ hours
Rehab Tech @ Morristown Medical Center: 3 years, 2500~ hours (I honestly think this is what helped me a ton)

LOR: (2) PT's, (1) Director of my schools Biology program

Applied: University of St. Augustine, Emory&Henry College, Kean University, Daemon College,

Accepted: U of St. Augustine (2/13)
Rejected: Emory&Henry
Still waiting on the other two

I was talking to the admissions coordinator to follow up on my acceptance at USA, and they said that I was very strong with my interview (very personable, outgoing, strong responses to questions)

Honestly if you think you'll have trouble with your interview, look up "A New Exercise: How to Succeed at the Interview for a DPT Program".

I swear by this book. It helped me tremendously in formulating my answers to common questions, as well as picking up on certain mannerisms, etc.

On another note, even though my grades weren't the best, I feel that if you really devote yourself to the field, you're bound to find success somewhere.

Good luck to all future DPT students

-Michael

hey did you apply to any other schools?

We have pretty similar stats + you went to UT. My best friend literally just started her first week at USF's PT school. She had a 4.0 GPA but lowish GRE scores (around 143/145 I think). She was a pretty competitive swimmer though and had fairly strong letters of rec and essays.

I personally wouldn't. The other parts of your application are very strong and your GRE is above average. You're also applying to alot of schools so you could use the money you plan on using to retake the GRE and use it towards application fees.

I did my graduate studies at UARK. Your stats look great considering you were able to pass some though courses and professors (Dr. Washington or Greene, Gray) with honors. You definitely stand out with extracurriculars, variety of settings, and research experience. I have met students who went to UAMS and UCA and you should be accepted to those schools base of your stats. How is your essay?

I definitely have gotten lucky to work with some great professors. I think my essay is pretty strong, but just hoping that it stands out enough in the large crowd.

Undergrad: University of Michigan Ann Arbor
Major: Neuroscience
Overall GPA: 3.625 (not including freshman year where I went to another large university and got a 3.83 overall GPA, but this university doesn't include that in their calculation, so probably closer to 3.7 if you include that).
Pre-Req GPA: Between 3.4-3.6
GRE: 153V, 155Q, 4.5 AW

Hours: 62 outpatient, 54 inpatient, 16 acute care. About 132 total. Plus 50 volunteering in peds and adult clinic. So 185 total. Planning on finding a rehab tech position once I graduate in December.

Extracurriculars: 180 hours of research in a neuro lab, 170 hours research in a pediatric pain clinic lab. 60+ hours at senior living center. 35 hours at children's hospital. Member of pre PT club, outreach chair and volunteer for another club, lots of community service on campus all related to promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles.

LOR: 1 from PT that i shadowed for 48 hours, 1 from prof whose class I took and worked in his lab for over a year, 1 from volunteer supervisor who I've known for almost 5 years since I started volunteering at the senior living center.

Worried mostly about my Pre-Req GPA.
I depends on where you apply to. Prerequisite GPA is good enough to get in most schools. Where are you appling to?

University: Point Loma Nazarene University

GRE: 158 V, 160 Q, 4.5 AW

Applying: UCSF/SFSU, SMU, CSULB, SDSU, Sac State, NAU, Regis, Duke (and potentially UOP?? I haven't decided yet if 2 years for a DPT is crazy or smart haha)

I feel like my extracurriculars and hours are a little lacking, but I'm hoping my essays and LORs will be strong enough to make up for that! Any input on my stats would be much appreciated!! 🙂

I appreciate that. My guess is that since UTHSCSA is a superb school with a crazy low out of state tuition (~75k for three years) and solid COL they have a ton of quality applications coming in. Plus, since they're a public school, they prioritize Texas residents. On their PTCAS page, 95% of their 44 person class is from Texas.

I'm also trying to get a hold of the admissions director so we can talk about what held me back. I'll be sure to update.

Question for you all- since I'm applying to a lot of reach schools, should I add another one or two to be safe? I looked at state schools, but honestly the cost of the ones I've got pre-reqs for seem to be the same as the private ones when you're OOS, so UAB is the only one I thought would be worth applying to.

What do you think? Am I taking too much of a chance with mostly big name schools? I also applied in the last little bit of time to two of them, so they may already be mostly filled.

University: Eastern Oregon University- Graduating Spring 2020
Major: Exercise Science
Overall GPA: 3.73
Pre-Req GPA: 3.66
Last 60 credits GPA: will range from 3.80 to 3.90
GRE: 150/155/4.5

Extra-Curric: 10+ years experience in engineering and manufacturing, St. Charles NICU Patient Advisory Committee member 2016-current, Full time caregiver to disabled daughter (2 yrs old)

LOR: 1 PT (Pacific University graduate), 1 curent professor (Eastern Oregon University Exercise Science/Human Physiology), 1 past professor ( Central Oregon Community College department chair of Human Performance and AT Stills graduate)

I havent finished my undergrad yet, I am a senior and I will graduate at the end of Spring 2020. I think my EC is lacking (although it is important to keep in mind I take care of my 2 year old daughter full time and she is significantly disabled), and my volunteer/observation hours are low for some programs. Should I even bother applying to schools this cycle or wait until after I have graduated in spring 2020?

I think you should go for it! Your grades look good and your GRE is above average. As for your ECs I think the fact that you have experiences over a long duration speaks to your commitment to things you are passionate about all while attending school and taking care of your family. Having 100 hours meets the minimum to quite a few schools. I think your application looks great and that it is unique. In your essays I am sure you could draw from your experiences to create a really compelling personal statement. I believe in you.

Haven't heard anything back yet. I heard the deadline for them notifying is 9/25/19. I am beginning to become worried that 9/25/19 will roll around I will not have heard anything good or bad. I have double checked that everything is completed and chosen and sent in. I even called the overarching graduate office for EWU and they said they saw me in their system with all necessary fees paid. Color me a little paranoid I guess from general bad luck in life. My questions are:

-9/25/19 is the deadline for them to notify about early decision correct? I believe that is what PTCAS says.
-Is it normal for programs to wait this long to notify?
-Do they notify if you are denied or is that a courtesy only certain schools do?
-Do most programs notify via email, mail, or phone?
-Best course of action to take if 9/25/19 rolls around and haven't heard anything yet? I figured calling or emailing them would most likely be my best bet.

I feel nervous and paranoid and have been checking my email like 5 times a day. I just want to know already.

Thanks man. Yes I did! I made sure they knew who I was and tried to ask memorable questions. I’m out of state and wanted to fly out for the extra points as well as to confirm that I dig the area.

I’ll say that it’s nice to know early, but it also reaffirms that I would have been accepted elsewhere. I hope that happens for you! Then you’ll have options!

Do you think your GPA helped out?

Based on my impression of the school and speaking with faculty, GPA isn’t weighted nearly as much as your response to questions.

Look at all of your statements through the lens of “does this make me excited for this person to enter the field? Is this person just saying the cookie cutter response of “I hurt myself or know someone who is hurt and I want to help”?”

One of the faculty exclaimed that “we HATE cookie cutter responses”. Let me know if you got any more Qs.

LOR: 1 PT (work supervisor), 1 PTA, 1 major professor
Applying: Old Dominion, VCU, Radford, East Carolina, Mary Baldwin (Murphy Deming), Hampton

ODU is my #1, so fingers crossed!

Edit:

Accepted: Murphy Deming

I know my overall GPA is a tad low, but I think I have a pretty well rounded application. I did get an A in both A&P's so I hope that counts for something! Saying that I'm pretty anxious is an understatement.
