Hi all,

I am completely lost as to which of these three choices would be the best decision. I am OOS to all three states (CA resident).

As far as my experiences/knowledge regarding the three schools, Hofstra's curriculum was amazing and unparalleled compared to the other two, in terms of the depth and extent of the clinical exposure they have integrated within their curriculum beginning the very first day. However, everyone I talk to keeps warning me of the risk of attending a new medical school (Hofstra only has three classes thus far).

In regards to Penn State vs. VCU, both curriculums seemed pretty similar to me...

I am aiming to eventually end up in a competitive residency, and ideally a CA residency.

Any insight on how to make the decision or what factors to consider? I am literally at square 1, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! 🙂

I preferred VCU between all of those schools, I personally didn't like Hofstra's "teach yourself" kind of curriculum, and although it looked like it had a potentially nice setup for matching into LIJ healthcare system, I think it is too iffy to match back to CA when you have other options. Now between Penn State and VCU, I really enjoyed both schools, including the curriculum and people, but I would probably go with VCU as their match lists seem to show a much higher tendency for their graduates to match to CA and other west/east coast programs. Now that may simply be due to demographics of people that come in (I don't remember the OOS percentages for either school of the top of my head), but if you look at VCU's, they have many of their students matching to programs all over CA.

Obviously if you want to do a Cali residency, the best choice would be a Cali school. Since you don't have that option, I really think all of these east-coast schools will be pretty equal in terms of helping you match.

What are the average step 1 scores of these 3 schools?
