Illinois CVM c/o 2023 Hopefuls

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone called to find out what's going on with the people who haven't received emails?

Just received OOS alt at 10:40 AM (central time). Super bummed because I fell in love with Illinois, but I guess that's the game.

I wonder why everyone else found out about their alternate status today and I got mine Friday..not sure if that’s a good thing or bad

Received my OOS alternate email today also. Anyone have any idea what the wait-list situation was like last year?
Just wondering about the chances of people getting off the list as it's (frustratingly) unranked.

I know you just got your acceptances, but I wanted to let you all know that I'll be looking for two roommates at The Village in Savoy for next school year, so if anyone has any housing questions or even wants a tour of my place sometime, let me know 🙂 The Village is one of the cheaper housing options in the area (rent is all inclusive except for electric, which runs me about $50 or less a month), is generally super quiet, very safe, and has maintenance included. Private bathrooms for each person in the three-bedroom!

I lived with an upperclassman my first year and found it super helpful, so I try my best to do the same for my underclassman roommates as well.

I guess I'll jump on that train. I will have one open bedroom in my 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house in Urbana. It is about a 12 minute drive to the vet school so you would need a car. It is animal friendly with a fenced in backyard, however my roommate and I would prefer someone who doesn't have any pets (or at least not cats and dogs) since we already have a german shepherd (my picture), two cats and a rat between us. But with this in mind, we will both be moving out May 2020 so you would be able to find your own roommates after you get to know people your first year and then acquire all the animals your heart desires. If you have a single dog or cat that gets along with other dogs and cats we can talk about it! REnt is 300 a month + utilities aka super cheap. PM me if interested!

Does anyone from the area (current students or residents) know which neighborhoods are family friendly neighborhoods near the CVM? My husband and I are looking to buy a house and don't know where to start looking.

It probably means nothing. I owuldn't read too much into it.

It really depends on the year (which is true of all schools). Like Schatzi has mentioned, there are more people waitlisted than compared a few years ago, so there's more of a chance it will move.

Does Illinois offer a lot of scholarships? I have looked all over but can not find anything

There are very few scholarships given out to incoming first years - and you'd be notified of them if you received them. We have maybe ~150 scholarships offered each year for our current students. They are applicable for either all classes (1st -4th years) or specific classes. But that being said there are ~500 students and ~150 scholarships annually. It is there, and possible, but not something you want to rely on receiving.

Trolling sdn for new roommates, I see 😛

I received two “recruitment” scholarships but was not notified of them until the end of the school year, when everyone else was notified of the scholarships they received through the application process over winter break.

Like stated above, they exist, but are definitely not doled out like undergrads do.

Had you already committed? Like is there any point in waiting to see if a scholarship is offered before committing?

I didn't make it into my IS, so it looks like I'm returning to my birth-state!

Avoid north Champaign, especially as you approach the highway. Avoid Urbana east of Philo. I currently live in Urbana right by the middle school and the side streets can be a little hit or miss even before Philo. Savoy is your best bet, not really a 'bad' area there. If you have houses/cross streets in mind, I'd be happy to give you my opinion on them.

Oh yeah, I was almost through third quarter of first year before I knew I received them. So no point in waiting.
Thanks! I was thinking you meant end of the school year before attending not the end of your first year but I misunderstood, that makes a lot more sense. Cool so I'll send in my deposit as soon as they let me 🙂 lol

I don't think they have one, but I was just wondering if they held an accepted students day?

I saw a couple other people point out how the email doesn't have anything attached. Is the acceptance form going to be in the physical copy that we get through the mail, or should we contact the admissions office?

Does anyone know how many acceptances they sent out this year?

We do not. However, if you have a free day/time, you're welcome to schedule a private tour (1 hour more in depth compared to interview day) that's with a student Ambassador.

I would call ASA for that one.

Earlier on the thread, someone mentioned that they sent out 80 IS acceptances and 120 OOS acceptances off the bat and then waitlisted the remaining 130 people.

How much is your rent a month? Also, I have a dog that would be coming with me, what are your thoughts on that?

I just called ASA and they said that we can accept all of the forms (including the acceptance form) in the physical letter they're sending out. Shoutout to you big dog!

Does anyone know if U of I recommends any specific stethoscope for students? I already have a Master Classic II, but might I want the Cardio IV for better sound quality?

A lot of people have the cardio but I wouldn’t personally recommend spending the money right now. I have the classic and it’s just fine. Most vets will tell you that you’re not going to hear much of a difference as a student.

I’d also much rather tote my less-expensive stethoscope around the hospital/farms/literally everywhere and chance losing THAT or someone mistaking it for theirs instead of losing a far more pricey one. I think a lot of people “graduate” to a cardio after they’re out practicing.

Edit: this being said, I know cardios or above are recommended for students hard of hearing

Not that I’m aware of. Lots of my classmates got the cardio iv but I went with a classic iii (was like half the price?) and I know there’s people with others. You should be fine with your current stethoscope. If you decide later in school you want a different one, go for it. But at this point in the game, I wouldn’t bother buying a new one since you have one.

The one I have has a single-sided chest piece (as opposed to the double-sided ones with an adult side and pediatric side) do you think this would be a drawback?

Probably wouldn’t make much of a difference. I’ve used both sides of mine, but the only time I’ve NEEDED a pediatric stethoscope was in the wildlife clinic, and stethoscopes are provided there anyway, to prevent disease spread.

I’m pretty sure at least one or two people I know have one sided stethoscopes.

Thank you both! I appreciate it a ton! I'll probably stick with the one I have.

I have the cardiology iv, which is a double sided. I'm currently a tech at a very large emergency and specialty center, but I rarely use the pediatric side. I do like it for the neonates and young patients, but I know I would've been just fine with a one-sided stethoscope.

If you intend on accepting your invitation to Illinois, please join the open 2023 facebook page! Log into Facebook | Facebook

Your class will have a private one for only 2023 members that will eventually be run by your future (to be elected in the fall) class representative. For now, use the open facebook page to get to know your Illinois Vet Med Community and ask any and all questions! My use of SDN will dwindle again -especially in the coming weeks. If you need me, FB is better!

Congrats again everyone! See some of you soon!

Does Illinois offer a lot of opportunities to travel aboard during the summer months? This is something I’m super interested and have found info from other schools but not so much Illinois. Do any current students have any insight? Thanks for being so helpful too, I’m learning so much!

Some people walk/bike and maybe a tiny tiny few take the bus (the bus is a little obnoxious because only one line comes to the vet school and it doesn't come more than 1-2x per hour so if you miss it or if it's running late, it can really screw things up). I'd say 90% of us drive- parking is $660/year, which is frustrating, but the convenience of having a car and being able to live slightly further away (ie lower rent) is invaluable in my opinion.
Two of the close-by places that get a lot of first year students are The Village at Colbert Park and also The Place @ 117. They're apartment complexes within 10ish minutes of the school, pet friendly, decent rent (if you have roommates especially), and do roommate matching so that can be a big plus if you want lower rent but don't know anyone to room with.
Otherwise there are a million apartment complexes nearby given it's a campus town. Also duplexes, condos, etc. Rent in Savoy (slightly south but v close) or Tolono (further south, more of a drive) is usually lower than Champaign. Urbana rents are often also less than Champaign, but certain neighborhoods in Urbana are...less desirable.
Using GoogleMaps to scope out an area is great if you can't make it down here in person, and otherwise you can post here and ask if anyone has experience with a certain landlord, etc!
Do you know how much the apartments at The Place @117 go for by chance? I was looking online and I couldn't find any prices listed.

So my girlfriend doesn’t want me rooming with any girls lol which is understandable. With that said, if there are any guys in vet school with an open room for this fall I will take it! Or if any guys in here that have been accepted want to start looking for places with me that’d be cool too.

Commuting during vet school- is it possible? I live exactly one hour from the vet school. The drive is interstate almost all the way. I have made the drive for a couple semesters while fulfilling pre reqs. My husband and I really don't want to sell our house and move because we haven't owned it that long. Also, we have 2.5 acres and 5 dogs, with a really nice setup for them. It would be really difficult for us to relocate. I also lived in Champaign/Urbana for four years during undergrad and really don't want to live up there again haha.
