Illinois CVM c/o 2023 Hopefuls

Otherwise there are a million apartment complexes nearby given it's a campus town. Also duplexes, condos, etc. Rent in Savoy (slightly south but v close) or Tolono (further south, more of a drive) is usually lower than Champaign. Urbana rents are often also less than Champaign, but certain neighborhoods in Urbana are...less desirable.
Using GoogleMaps to scope out an area is great if you can't make it down here in person, and otherwise you can post here and ask if anyone has experience with a certain landlord, etc!

What neighborhoods in Urbana are less desirable?

Everyone interviewed Monday. Illinois only holds one interview day.
Yea, I meant that I wasn't expecting to hear back until next month, let alone within the same week.
Apologies for any confusion.

I still haven't heard anything 🙁 also what are the chances of getting off the waitlist then

They accept 70 IS and 60 OOS. Out of the 300 interviews, they said they were sending about 120 OOS offers (to account for people declining) and about 80ish IS offers (if memory serves). The rest are waitlisted, so it depends on how far down you are.

From what I remember they told us in the info session, they admit twice as many OOS students as they want in their class because historically about 50% end up accepting the offer, so they end up with the right amount. The waitlist moving should mean that less than 50% have accepted the offer, so it just depends on the pool of people who were initially accepted and what other options they might have.
Personally, I got in OOS, and though I haven't made any final decisions I'm probably not going to accept the offer. I hope my spot can eventually go to someone on the waitlist! Good luck!!

Accepted OOS. Will be declining my spot to attend my IS, I really did love Illinois but I would be dumb to spend $20,000 more annually.
I feel that, still waiting to hear back from A&M, but I loved Illinois, especially with all their research opportunities.

Has anyone else received emails that said they were on the waitlist for IS or OOS? I thought we were supposed to get an email like either way.

It looks like there was someone earlier in the thread that said they were waitlisted IS. I’m not sure if you would be able to hear anything before Monday since I doubt anyone’s in, so my fingers are crossed for you these next 2 days!!

I meant has there been anyone else? This is my last chance for this cycle so I’m understandably tired of waiting at this point.

I still haven’t received an email. Im gonna call Monday or just wait to see if they send the rest out Monday

I don’t have any firsthand experience with bad neighborhoods, but I’ve heard that going east of Philo Rd (a main road through Urbana) or too far north starts bringing you into sketchier neighborhoods. That being said, it’s not like we’re a major city or anything so you still wouldn’t be in danger of murder.
If you live close enough to scope out the area obviously that’s best. I’ll be in Urbana next year, but I made sure to kinda check out the street I’ll be on (it’s great, btw- Urbana still has great places)

is it cold in illinois all the time? wondering if i'll survive coming from the south
We get lots of people from warm states (Florida, Cali), and they survive! Just be sure to have a warm coat and hats are your best friend.

Honestly, Illinois can be cold but it’s not ridiculous. The bigger issue can be that the weather is so sporadic. eg: this winter we had one day that was like -20 (this is not a norm btw) and then literally within like two days it was 40. The huge changes can be obnoxious and mess with people’s seasonal allergies.

Questions- Anybody a little weirded out that during interview day the admin explicitly said that all offers will be made via snail mail sent out March 1st? And for those accepted, was it to some sort of duel/special program? Anything special about your application?

I am currently freaking out because this is my only cycle I get to apply before being shipped off into the real world. I especially hate that this has turned into a double waiting game. Like will we receive word on monday? Next week? Three weeks from now? I'm very upset.

I didn't apply to any special program and was surprised to receive an email. Part of me thinks that the reason they did email was because the weather has been so iffy recently that it may delay letters/may result in some getting lost. They also said they would mail it out by March 1st at the latest, so they may have just finished really quickly and wanted to send out decisions ASAP.
I know some other people were speculating that something may have gone wrong in the system since that happened with interview invites as well, so it's possible that they haven't realized there's an issue in the system since it's a weekend!

Wow! What happened with interview invites? I wasn't aware something happened to the system then! Maybe they are issuing acceptances in waves (me rationalizing my life, haha!) ?

So shortly after the deadline to accept or decline your interview they sent another email to some people asking again to accept or decline the interview even though we have sent our decisions to them already. Apparently there was an error in the system that caused them not to get everyone's answer. It was very nerve wracking experience.

^^^This + when they sent out interview times there were a bunch of us that didn't receive an email when everyone else did. I had to call after the weekend to ask what my time was because I had not been updated yet, and as the person I was talking to was trying to help me he said the system suddenly went down as he was looking:laugh:

Are they sending acceptances in waves? or did all 120 people get acceptance emails yesterday?

Yea like do we still have a chance or all waitlisted folks?

Well my thinking.... There was one person that stated they were in state waitlisted and received the email on friday. Maybe they are just out of the office until monday?

Movement is completely unpredictable, and that's pretty much true for all vet schools. For class of 2020, there was 0 wait list movement. For my class, a friend of mine was called in late July.

The thing you'll have to worry about isn't the cold. You just wear more clothes for that. It will be learning to drive on ice. I'm from Colorado, so I'm pretty comfortable with sludging through snow. But the ice here is definitely something else to me. So make an in state or upper Midwest friend who can teach you how to drive on ice.

Can you claim residency in Illinois at all when in vet school? And is there a Facebook page or anything for accepted students?

Don't count on changing residency. Only one girl that I know of has changed residency without getting married, and it's because she opened her own horse boarding barn. She's also only getting in state tuition for spring semester of third year through graduation. So she paid out of state for the first 2.5 years.

I would also hold off on the Facebook page. SAVMA/ASA will be making yall one at some point that will be open to upper classmen to help you. Then yall will get situated with a class rep and make yourselves a private one.

And then for my class, there were two of us on here that got called off a week after the deadline, and I think I’ve heard of at least one more?

Do you not have icy roads in Colorado winters? I assumed because it was so snowy and cold that it was a given.

Ice requires it to get warm enough to melt snow and then cold quick enough to refreeze it. Not sure about Colorado, but in Illinois and Michigan, the melt/refreeze cycle happens pretty regularly so it gets icy

Like, ice is a thing in Colorado, but the snow is a much bigger deal. Colorado is also significantly better about getting ahead of storms than Illinois is.

Don't forget about the wonderful freezing rain! As for how to drive on the ice, please refer to the attached picture.

As far as I know they will begin working on the surgical suites by the end of the semester and over the summer.

In terms of wait-list movement I'm sure it will move. The reason it did not move for my class is because more people accepted the initial out of state offer than ever before. We have more OOS than IS in my class. In response to this, the past two years they have given fewer initial out of state offers to make sure they don't over fill the class, but the amount of seats is still the same. So again, the in-state and the out of state wait-lists do move each year (my year was an odd anomaly that they have put preventative measures in place to keep from happening again. Hello classzilla.). In-state Illinois folks are notorious for not staying in Illinois because our in-state tuition is not cheap and we can get equivalent or near equivalent pricing at Mizzou and Wisconsin.

I do not know why emails were sent this year. Our dean of students told us the same as all you that it would still be snail-mail. I'm sorry it is frustrating that you get to see other people receiving their decisions when you have not. As a person with the ability to address the dean with any and all student issues I will be sure to bring this up with them tomorrow at the monthly faculty meeting. I'm positive that staff and faculty either a). do not know of the existence of this website or b). do not realize how much it is utilized by potential students. They probably do not realize the extent to which you all collaborate. But also bear in mind that this is also a benefit. It would have been very easy for me to find out who some of you were before you interviewed and to form preconceived ideas about you before I even met you -good or bad.

Sorry I’m still unsure if it’s been answered, so acceptances get sent out in waves or was everyone sent them 2 days ago? Or can we still be expecting some Monday

Does U of I vet school have their own fitness center or do you need to purchase a membership to an outside gym?

The truth is we don't know. This is the first year in history that they have ever done email acceptances.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion and I hate to be the first to come out and say it, but I would prepare yourself for a wait-list decision if you have not heard from the school at this time. Now, I do NOT know this for fact, but based on my knowledge of how the school works I feel as if this is the most logical situation. I hope for many of you that they are sending things out in waves, but based on the fact that they have sent emails to both in-state and out-of-state applicants I don't see this as likely.

Our wait-list is NOT a denial. Our wait-lists DO move. And there is ZERO correlation between being pulled off a wait-list and what kind of veterinarian you will be in the future. There is also no indication that someone who takes multiple cycles to get in will be less of a doctor versus someone who gets in on the first try. Multiple of my best friends here at Illinois took 2+ cycles to get in to vet school. They are amazing students and will be amazing doctors. The frustration is real, and I get that. But you will be a stronger person for it as this profession is full of ups and downs.

You have access to the university’s stuff since you are a student. It’s not vet school only though.

I’m not sure if during the summer you have access since you’re not technically enrolled in classes, except for between 3rd and 4th year.

Funny you ask. We will be opening a gym in the basement of the small animal clinic in a few weeks. But you get membership to the UIUC gyms on main campus as part of being a UIUC student. And no, unfortunately you cannot back out of those fees even if you never plan on utilizing the UIUC gyms (ARC and CRCE)

Do you know the type of equipment they will be putting into this gym?

Likely a few cardio machines, a few weight machines, limited free weights, mats, stretching bands, etc. It is a fairly small space. It is mostly meant for a means to get a quick workout in on busy days. If you are a fitness guru do not depend on this!

Oh ok, dope! Thanks, I appreciate it,🙂!

Are there showers there ?

What neighborhoods in Urbana are less desirable?

For neighborhoods, I personally looked on Trulia. I rented an apt before moving, sight unseen, and just used Trulia's crime map to find a safe area. I don't know if this is the *best* method but it worked for me. I live in a duplex in Champaign.

Can any current students from a southern state give me some insight on acclimating to the school/weather? I've lived in Florida my whole life and would love to get a direct perspective!
