Illinois CVM c/o 2023 Hopefuls

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just checked out your class schedule. Am I a horrible person for thinking it doesn't look too bad?? 😳 But that may be because I feel like the second half of this quarter is way better than the first half, to be honest. 603 is way front heavy (to me), and if you get through respiratory phys, you'll be set for the rest of the year. I'll see if I can find some notes to make life easier 🙂
It was just a lot that was squashed into the week of midterms when we previously had not a ton there.:dead: So now we’re still learning a butt ton of new material that week. Before it was pretty much only phys and I think CC and one imaging lecture. But we were likely not even going to need all the cardio phys time that week apparently

I actually just checked and I got an email this morning saying that they received my interview acceptance and they are still working on interview times.

Just called, if you got a reminder email telling you to accept or deny resend your acceptance! I sent one the day I got mine and apparently a bunch got messed up!

I did as well and got an email confirming they received the second email within minutes.

I didn’t get an email confirming they got it. It would be upsetting if they dont give me the spot because i emailed them as soon as i got the invite the first time and three times today. Ill call tomorrow if i dont get an email confirming they received the email.

Hey guys, the situation of email confusion sounds frustrating. But let's take a step back here for a minute.

The school was on a limited staff today due to out -45* windchill. There are usually only 6 people in ASA, including the dean and his student services right hand man. That means there are only 4 staff members who handle student things like this directly. They're trying to get info to about 350-400 people. If every single one of those people sends 3 emails, that's 1050 emails at best to get through. By sending so many checks ins and stuff in a short amount of time, it could possibly clog the pipes even worse and take more time to shift through things.

Interview day is insanely important and yall are definitely right to make sure you get your spot. But they can't do their job if they're getting completely inundated by everyone (regular students yesterday in regards to the campus shut down, higher ups in regards to the campus shut down, each other and interview day, and yall and interview day).

Sure, if yall don't hear by Monday, go ahead and call or email. But give it a few days so they can get the confusion sorted out.

This is my first vet med weather day in 3.5 years, so it's not common. And it was done because the Chancellor of the university cancelled classes across campus and the power that be said that applied to all vet med students as well (including 4th years). For our 1st and 3rd years, they reschedule the classes when faculty/staff have the time. So it could get relatively spread out. For the 2nd years, our colloquium was canceled this morning, and we were told we didn't have to go to clinical rotations if we didn't want to.
And when 4th years stayed home today from clinics, all hell broke loose. I am dead inside

OH MAN what did they even do on services if a good chunk of you guys stayed home
You stayed home on that rotation!?!?
I came in! I was late because I physically couldn't lock my front door, but I made it lol.

No one came in for imaging (Parkland students were off too), so everyone had to bring their own patients down (huge time suck) and it affected everyone. Only one person showed up for farms. We were at 3/5 for neuro and I just had a 16 hour day with two emergency backs, appointments, and pre-existing inpatients.

Everyone who wanted to pull their weight drove in like usual or got a ride if they bike/had car trouble. Same people on my rotation who have been case dodging were the two to take the day off, shocking

oh ps our rounds room was 50 degrees

Im pretty sure this was answered but i can’t find it in the thread but how is the interview constructed? How many interviewers and how long and is it open/closed interview? (Do interviewers have access to your packet?)

3 interviewers iirc, one is a 3-4th year I think. I think it’s 30 minutes but lots of people don’t take up the whole time (I had about 15-20 minute interview for the 2022 cycle), closed interview.

I have the interview at 11:30. Any advice for how to go about my day? I wanna do the tour and the info session. I am not sure what time each thing is. I know they have two info sessions and I guess the tours are throughout the day based off the website.

Tours will be throughout the day starting at 8 and going till 4 with current students. So you can head to the atrium at any point and join a tour starting there. They'll be half an hour long. There will also be Q&A student there.

Here’s a link to the UIUC website with interview day info, including what is probably a tentative schedule? https://vetmed.illinois.edu/education/doctor-veterinary-medicine-degree/interview-day-schedule/

Right now they say the two info sessions are 11am-12pm and 2-3pm so you’ll be unable to go to the first one, but I definitely recommend going to the later session if at all possible. For me, it was super helpful and answered a lot of my questions about curriculum, tuition, and administration stuff.

Are there places to eat at the vet school or near that I can go before the info session cause I’m assuming im gonna have a little time after the tour to get lunch before the info session at 2pm, or no?

If your interview is at 11:30, the longest you'll probably go is till noon. Then gotta get to the tour start point so out of the tour at 12:45. Then next info session at 2. So you'll have an hour or so. We have an Einstein that will be selling food.

Great! Thanks for your help! I greatly appreciate it! 🙂

Like Bats said, Einsteins is great. But if you want something a bit more filling there’s also plenty of fast food places nearby: Culvers, Arbys, Subway, McDs, to name a few. You’d just definitely want to keep an eye on the time!! Also, parking will be rough so if you don’t want to give up your spot Einsteins would be your best bet.

For anyone reading this who has more time to eat, there are also plenty of nice restaurants you could go to nearby that aren’t fast food 🙂

I have an 11:30 am interview too! There must be several running at the same time.

Did anyone not get their time yet? I'm worried because I did not get an email with a time and I called them the other day when they sent the reminder email and the woman I was on the phone with confirmed that she got my email and I was all set. So I'm really hoping they haven't sent all the times yet.

They have TONS of interview rooms. Gotta get through like 300-400 people at 30 minutes each.

Have you checked your junk mail? If you don’t have anything by Monday, give them a call. If you can show you sent in your acceptance of it, they’ll find space to interview you if they somehow missed you. They won’t just take it away from you for an error on their end. Don’t freak out just yet.

I did check my junk mail, nothing. Trying not to freak out, but I'm sure as you know it's hard not to!

Approximately how many out of state interviews are offered?

bats answered someone earlier that she wasn’t sure, so no one knows

You know you're too involved when if you don't know, no one knows. Lol
lol
So
I found the answer. It’s on the goddamn admissions page. 🤣

I haven’t gotten a time either! I’ve checked all of my emails/spam/junk/etc. folders, so I’m going to call on Monday if I don’t hear by then so I can plan my flights!

I haven't gotten anything either! I got the email earlier in the week saying that they were still working through things but didn't get any confirmation today. If I don't hear back on Monday then maybe I'll freak 😉

8AM interview. Trying to figure out what to do with my spare time before the information session.

I think I might tour around the campus, depending on how cold it'll be.

Do you mean main campus? It's about a 15 minute bus ride to the bookstore/illini union/alma mater from our part of campus

Lol I’ve only been on the main campus like
Three times
Once to get my ID, once to ask about parking passes since my mom and I were nearby, and once to just look at the spiritwear the bookstore was selling  whoops

Hmmm, that was my intention, but maybe not then if it's that far away. I suppose I can always push my introverted self to be social...

Yeah, it's probably an 8ish minute drive, but then you lose your vet med spot and have to pay to park on main campus.

Being social is good!!
