I agree that the residency match process isn't perfect, but it has come a long way.

is it a bad idea to send a thank-you email to the PD where I interviewed even though he/she wasn't there that day I didn't get a chance to meet him/her? is that going too far? I really wanna email them and tell them I loved the interview experience and loved their program.

I think that's fine. Just mention that you wish you had the opportunity to meet them in person, and if they're willing to, call you for a second look interview later on when they're present.

Just do thank you notes to the people you had contact with...and only if it make you feel better...programs dont care

Hi may I ask your stats? year of grad? need visa? how many programs in florida did you apply too? and specifically which hospitals in florida? I am scared too

I haven't heard anything from any of the Texas, Florida or Ohio programs that I had applied to. These three states combined made 25-30% of my application, and I have 0 acknowledgments, rejections or invitations from them.

That’s a big deal man. Surprised they sent out love letter this early let alone a handwritten one. I doubt they would mail out hundrends of written letters.

Yeah a little surprised when I saw it, I interviewed there right when the season started so that might be why it came in so early. Here’s the dilemma, the plan so far is to rank them like middle-ish of my list(4-6), so how do I respond? Lol

Oh wow! Was this a program from Nebraska?
Also, does anyone have any input on Ocala Health from near Orlando, Fl?

don't let their letter affect your ROL. I would give a diplomatic answer and not lie to them. "It was great meeting the team and I loved the program and it would be a great place to train" something like that.

I actually wouldn’t respond or else it’s a never ending cycle. If you sent a thank you email already, just end it there

Anyone who has interviewed at UPMC McKeesport or Western Reserve Youngstown, please share your experience! Thank you.

I interviewed at UPMC Mckeesport last year. Good program, Mckeesport as a city is mehh, pretty small, but is maybe 20-30 minute drive to Pittsburgh which is great! most residents live somewhere in between the two cities.
The hospital is not tertiary at all, although they do have a cath lab. They send their sicker patients to UPMC Mercy or UPMC Presby.
They do pretty well with fellowship matches, no in-house fellowships though. They are well connected with the other UPMC hospitals so good research opportunities and EMR-looking up your patient history within the UPMC network, and there are great subspecialist attendings who also work in other UPMC hospitals, so it's great to work with them and do research/ make connections if a fellowship is important to you.

The training here is solid, their residents are very competent and well trained. The program is very visa friendly. Leadership seemed quite supportive, they really helped out their visa-requiring residents who were having visa issues and couldn't start on time. Well structured program in terms of rotations/didactics etc. Hospital is on the smaller side, but very well maintained and clean and renovated. Your continuity ambulatory clinic is conveniently located across the street from the hospital and I believe they use x + y rotation model. You have teaching opportunities as PCOM students rotate here, and there is an FM residency here as well so you get interactions with them also.

No pre-interview dinner, but as you know they provide hotel accommodation which is awesome. Your interview day is pretty standard; you start with a hospital tour/breakfast, then you sit in for their morning report, then you get a powerpoint presentation/program introduction followed by 3 one-on-one interviews (faculty, PD, APD) Very standard interview questions. They are shifting towards primary care though (looking to open up a new PC track or shifting entirely to a PC track only), so maybe keep your fellowship interest to yourself during the interview and I would refrain from asking too many research/fellowship questions. (I wish someone had told me this when I interviewed).

Leadership seemed quite supportive, very visa friendly, they really supported and helped their visa-requiring residents who were having visa issues and couldn't start on time. Well structured program in terms of rotations/didactics etc. Hospital is on the smaller side, but very well maintained and clean and renovated. Your outpatient continuity clinic is across the street from the hospital so it's very convenient during clinic rotations and I believe they use the x + y rotation model which is always great to have. For the interview, very standard questions. They are shifting towards primary care though (looking to open up a new PC track or shifting entirely to a PC track only), so maybe keep your fellowship interest to yourself during the interview and don't focus on asking research/fellowship questions. Thank you Bobby! Really appreciate your help. I’ll make sure I don’t talk about fellowships.

4 faculty interviews: PD, APD, direction of Education, and Research Director/Pharm D. Also 1 interview with PC. All were quite chill and conversational. Line of questioning was all standard: why this program, why IM, why should I hire you, what will you bring to this program, etc.
I really liked the faculty; they seemed pretty committed to the residents, and I could totally see myself being happy working for them. pretty good sized hospital and diverse pathology. Residents don't really hang out together outside of work, but all seem pretty nice. Apparently they had a citation a few years back for board pass rates or something like that(I heard this second hand so don't know the details) but has since been cleared after making some changes to curriculum. Food in Dearborn area is pretty solid, I had an Indian buffet the day before which was incredible. Also Detroit is COLD AF lol.

McKeesport gave the impression of being very disorganized during IV day. Didn't give us sample schedules, not a lot of contact with residents, only met two of them. Overall not a great experience.

I know nothing but my gut says there are a bunch of interviews coming our way. Today for no darn reason I feel so hopeful. I am feeling good and I am sure it's not a new onset of bipolar disorder even though I was depressed since September 16th. We are all going to be fine y'all!:soexcited:

Bobby. Any idea about UPMC Pinnacle?

hey no, I don't know too much about the program itself. I think they have a few residencies and the hospital provides tertiary care services, no IM fellowships in-house from what I recall. It's in Harrisburg which is a smaller city in central PA and far from everything. Uni affiliated obviously so research opportunities will be there. I don't know the difference between the UPMC hospitals and UPMC pinnacle hospitals, but I think they are one and the same.
My only experience with them was last year and I still remember it, I called the coordinator asking about their visa status, and she was really rude without being provoked and hung up on me mid-sentence.
