Waiting to hear back from 2 other schools so I’m hoping One will be relatively soon. My fiancée will be coming with me wherever so he would need to find a job too lol

Worst comes to worst, they could stay behind for a bit and continue at their current job while searching for one in IA and then join you 🙁

I might be ok with that 😉 lol totally kidding... maybe.

OOS alternate. I got accepted to WesternU but ISU is my top school. Aside from loving the school and curriculum, my sister is there and my family wants to move there. I don't know what to do!!🙁
you could always wait until closer to the deadline to accept your western spot and if you get off the isu waitlist before the deadline, go there if its where you want to be and if you dont get a spot before, you could accept your western spot and pay the deposit and then if you get a call from isu, accept there and decline your western spot. youd lose the deposit from western, but if isu is your top choice, it could be worth it. just my two cents and is what most people do, hence the need to call people after the initial deadline 🙂

Heyo everyone!

I hopped back on here to wish everyone with their acceptances and on the waitlist a hearty congratulations! I am a current first year IS student at ISU, so, like quite a few other students have offered, feel free to ask me any questions about living/moving up to Ames or about the school! I will do my best to respond to questions as they come and to the best of my knowledge and experience.

For those on the waitlist, don't lose hope! As a lot of other people said, they went through quite a few people last year, as students find out about all the schools they applied to and as seats are declined. And don't feel to stressed about things taking maybe a day or two to get updated on your applicant portals! The admissions and admin staff does their best, but they do most everything by hand - it takes some time and this is definitely their busy season!

I wish you all the best, and please, let me know if you have any questions! Congrats!!!

oh awesome! I thought about that but I wasn't sure if that was something a lot of people do. Also, do you know if ISU allows admissions deferments?
I did ask last year, but it sounds like they only really do so in case of medical or family-related reasons. I don't know the chances that it would be approved, but it doesn't hurt to ask if you have a reason/concern about deferring.

I will be buying a trailer home but does anyone know if there are typically homes available midsummer?

Haven't gotten any news from ISU yet... but one of my friends who has now graduated and is a doctor told me she was waitlisted at spot number 45 and still got in!! So don't lose hope to anyone waitlisted! Keep believing and never give up! 🙂

CORRECTION: I forgot ISU goes through their page directly so I just checked and I am alternated! Goodluck everyone!

What would you say you spent monthly for living? Like rent and such? Coming from MA with a higher cost of living I’m curious what it’s like around there. Thanks!

He mostly does like heavy equipment operation stuff so construction but we both work on a dairy farm right now so he can always do something like that. So I would think it wouldn’t be too hard for him but I find something.
What field is he in?

I live in one of the trailers and my current rent is $325/month + half the utilities so on average I am spending $375/month for rent. Cost of food and entertainment is totally variable by person. Average rent looks to be about $350-$400 in the trailer park. You live super close in the trailer park to the point that you save on gas and parking passes since you can walk.

A lot of the trailers go on sale this time of year and are available to move into by mid May or early June! If not plenty of people sublease rooms in the trailers or apartments while they’re gone for the summer. Most apartments seem to open up for new leases in August

That’s awesomely cheap compared to MA haha. So if it was me and my fiancé, you would say we could get away with only 1 car if we lived there?

I live in a house with roommates and roughly pay about $450-500 a month per person. Trailers are definitely a cheaper option which is why I’ve bought one for next year already.

In my opinion you could if you were planning on living in the trailers.

Does anyone know of a good horse barn to pasture board? My horse will be coming with me as well or of any rentals where you can live and board your horse?

If I end up going to Iowa I was thinking of renting a place with a little acre or two and keeping my old horse on it and then invite a few other student horses to join. Not sure if my old mare should be asked to make the trip for CA to IA though.

hey all! so this might be a really silly question, but do we need to bring/buy our own scrubs for vet school?

If you’re accepted the book store order form will go out to you when the time comes and you can get scrubs through the school. I use my own scrubs that I brought though. You don’t have to have specific scrubs from the school. They will be useful for anatomy lab and wet labs for certain clubs.

In case you need anymore reason to come to ISU, we had a student AVMA meeting/talent show tonight, and here’s our admin staff (whose coordinates admissions and and so much more at the CVM)

I am not sure if anyone already posted this question but does anyone know how many are on the waitlist? Since they have no interview waitlist I wonder if it is longer than previous years. I think historically it is in less than 200.

Does anyone have experience with the one year masters offered @ ISU? I don’t know if the Vet Clinical one would look better than the Production one?

I was accepted to the 1-year program last summer. After speaking with admissions, I was really torn whether to take the position because it was literally a week before classes began and I was already at UF and accepted into their online MHS one health program, and I was able to use some of my courses from my public health certificate for the one health program. The one year program interested me, but it just didn't make sense for me at the time. Since my goal is vet school, I was able to pay down some previous debt this year while doing an online program and the one health program is unique. I know I m interested in research so I figured I would be able to do that in vet school at ISU. Overall, I guess it just depends on your ultimate goals but I was impressed with the program!

I called, and Kathy said it is around 300. They usually accept around 150-200 of these from the alternate list.

There is no way they accept 150-200 ppl off the alternate list. The class of 2021 was 150 ppl.

Go look at last years thread (class of 2021). It looks like they got all the way up to #165.

People turn down spots for their in state or a cheaper out of state so they have to pull someone else off. Hence the higher number.
Wouldn’t happen to know how they rank the alternate list, would you?

So I went through the 2021 forum and it gave me a lot of hope even with being on the alternate list. they went through 165 alternate spots AND then went into the interview waitlist. So they went through a lot of people to fill up their seats!

Does anyone know about health insurance costs at ISU for students? Is that included in tuition? Do we have to seek our own coverage outside of the school?

Insurance is not covered by your tuition. You can purchase it through the school though. The fall semester I paid $550 and this spring semester I paid $770 for my coverage.

Thanks. Another question: do students get any kind of discount on pet food or pet medical care through the university?

Hills and purina have discounts for the vet students to get their food through the school and their programs. Hills has a more significant discount than purina. I pay usually $23 for a 33lb bag (normally $57). As for vet care there is a small discount offered but a local clinic in town offers good deals to the vet students! Lots of students typically take their pets to the local clinic instead of the school unless it’s an emergency

Want to also add on that there is an ISU student Oxbow rep for small animal/pocket pet food items like hay! I met someone at my open house in October who mentioned it.

I have utilized the Hills VIP market through my work and like 14gsp93 said, it's usually a significant discount, and the VIP market even includes Rx food.
