Iowa State c/o 2023 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called instead of messaged and they asked my last name. My worrying brain went well you went and did it now. So then I apologized profusely in my message. I had to ask about cumGPA because they used VMCAS's cumulative undergrad calc but I have retaken those courses since then and they said they take the newest grade ( also most were over or at 8 years). Now im worried I messed up.. 🙁

For the supplemental application, they ask for high school activities and awards....it's been 10+ years since I've been out of high school! What did y'all non-traditional applicants put? I honestly can't remember any awards that stood out.
When I applied, I think I had National Honor Society for awards and that was all I could remember. Activities were easier to remember, and I listed all the clubs I was involved in and the sports teams I played for.

Did anyone else’s calculated grades from earlier disappear from their status page??

Does anyone know if the supplemental processing fee ($95 for international applicants) is in USD? Any international or Canadian applicants know if they’ll accept cheques or if it needs to be a money order?

Update: I ended up getting a certified US money order from my bank

Yes it is in USD. Checks are accepted, but not sure about international checks. You would have to ask them on their message system.

Yep, mine disappeared too. Hopefully they made mistakes calculating (wishful thinking, lol)
I asked them about that because they say they take the newest grade and used vmcas's but either way I was over the cutoff ( my undergrad was very crazy due to a lot of hardships)

They are super helpful and have been prompt given the crazy this cycle.

Mine before they disappeared were definitely a little different than the calculated GPAs on my VMCAS application. Hoping that is the case!

ISU calculates their own GPAs and doesn’t include any classes that were taken over the summer that may have been included on a vmcas gpa. That could also be the discrepancy with yours.

I don't know about the classes over the summer thing being true unless they changed it because I took multiple required scince classes during the summer and I am pretty sure they included those in the calculations last year when I applied.

I applied last cycle. It was true then.
They do not use it in the initial calculations. They use it in the final calculation in January before decisions. They do not include it because some people may not have been able to get grades and transcripts in in time for it to be in the initial calculation. I asked.

I've heard of that rule at ISU. The strange thing is, I have never taken a summer class. It wasn't a big enough discrepancy to matter, but a discrepancy nonetheless.

You can definitely ask them how they calculated your gpa! They’ll send you exactly what went into the calculations.

Has anyone gotten to committee review? Based on the past years forums by this time everyone is out of academic review.

Where are you seeing your application status? My application status has been "None" this whole time. Are you in-state?

I’m out of state. On the application dashboard it’s says academic review. Mine said none but has had this for about two weeks

Just checked and mine says that as well. Also says they need my fall grades by Feb 1st. Mine just changed to that however.

Mine says academic review but I'm at the top of the alphabet so maybe they are doing it that way.

I am too (well, almost), so I'm thinking not. I guess we'll see - I think that if we don't see a change by Monday or Tuesday @PawPrints93 we should shoot them a message via the application portal just to be sure everything is okay.

They seem to be helpful, please email don't call. They said the message center is best.

The gpas are back up again. Im guessing they use Vmcas for the cumulative but replace the science ( because with retakes mine is competitive :/) . Which is ok because they said cumulative was just used for the 2.5 to apply .

Mine were literally not there, then I read this post, refreshed the page, and they came up. Yay for being above the minimum cumulative.

I hope summer is calculated in the final last 45 my last 45 is kinda low for 28 credits of grad and like 10 of undergrad..and well the Bs in retakes probably bumped it down but it looks faaar better than cumulative and im proud of myself. 😀

It will be!! This past summer gets calculated in before decisions go, along with this fall semester’s grades.

How is the schedule for 1st years. How long is lunch? Uf gets a very short lunch.
CLASS OF 2022 INFORMATION | Iowa State University
Schedule is linked on the page above. It hasn't changed much since I was a VM1 5 years ago. Lunches are an hour, and most clubs take advantage of this and schedule their meetings during the lunch hour. The class is split into two for some courses, which is why the labs for BMS 333 and 339 run at the same time. You'll be randomly put in a section your first year, but you can choose your sections after that to fit around electives.

Everything genny said! Also there are electives you can take that are scheduled during the lunch hour - I'm in one that is on Thursdays at noon. There's also an open hour on Wednesdays - no exams, classes, etc. from 8-9 am. Some clubs will schedule breakfast meetings during this hour though.

If you get to committee review, do they still look at your GPA to make a final decision? Or do they only consider committee review once you get there?

I know my app has the gpas up on it and as @SkiOtter has said they still look at fall/summer. My app says fall 18 grades need to be in by Feb 2nd

Grades and GRE were about 50% of the score last year and committee review the other 50% last year so I believe GPA is now 50% since they aren't looking at GRE anymore. I believe it is only their science and last 45 credit hours GPA they look at though.

GPA is 50% of their admissions decision. As stated in their selection criteria. They look at last 45 and required science GPA.

I wonder if they look at the actual courses on your transcripts in the "academic review"... or if they just literally look at your GPA's and move on.:eyebrow:

That's a good question...Hmmmm

They definitely look at them as far as prerequisites go, otherwise I am not sure. You could message them and ask.

Does anyone else have their VMCAS Application Status as "Not yet received"? I was verified a few weeks ago and they've got my GPA...but not my VMCAS. My Application Status still says "none".
