"USC" will be easier to write than "Washington University in St. Louis"
You'll definitely have to take that into consideration when making your decision.
The actualy name of the school is "Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California"

New Dean Appointed to Keck School of Medicine of USC
Nationally respected cancer researcher brings storied career to new position

Los Angeles, May 10, 2004? Brian E. Henderson, M.D., the holder of the Kenneth T. Norris Jr. Chair in Cancer Prevention, has been named dean of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Henderson replaces Stephen J. Ryan, M.D., who announced his resignation after 13 years as dean and is returning full-time to ophthalmology as president of the USC-affiliated Doheny Eye Institute, and as the Grace and Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology at the Keck School.

?In little more than a decade, Steve Ryan has transformed the School of Medicine, attracting some of the most talented faculty in the country, raising the national visibility of the school, building state-of-the art facilities, and greatly expanding the level and quality of sponsored research,? said Lloyd Armstrong, Jr., USC?s provost.

?Brian Henderson has the administrative skills and scientific acumen to keep this momentum going, and to continue to move the Keck School to the next level. He has done that before at USC: as founding chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and as founding director of the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute. He is known as a keen judge of academic talent, and is himself a nationally respected researcher.?

USC President Steven B. Sample also paid tribute to Ryan?s legacy. ?The Keck School of Medicine is a very different institution from what it was when Steve Ryan took over in 1991. He took the school through a difficult transition with skill and grace, elevating the school along all dimensions of research, teaching and patient care. He has redefined what is possible, and created the infrastructure for the Keck School to become ?in his words??a private research medical school in pursuit of excellence and the highest quality.?

?Brian Henderson has that same commitment to excellence, and the leadership experience we need at this juncture in the development of the Keck School. Not only is he nationally recognized as a scholar, but his role in helping create the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is noted as a major accomplishment of the highest order. Both the provost and I have pledged our full support as he begins his work in the months ahead.?

Henderson called it ?a great privilege? to have been asked to lead the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

?I?m looking forward to working with all the faculty, staff and students of the Keck School and to continuing the momentum that Steve Ryan has built,? said Henderson. ?The rapid growth in both the clinical and research enterprise, as well as the many new facilities under construction, point toward an exciting future for the school. What a great time this is.?

Henderson first came to the Keck School in 1970 as an associate professor of pathology. Today, he is considered one of the world?s pre-eminent authorities in cancer epidemiology, having established the Los Angeles Cancer Surveillance Program at USC in 1972, and the Hawaii-Los Angeles Multiethnic Cohort in 1993. He served as president of the San Diego-based Salk Institute for Biological Studies from 1993 to 1995, returning to USC in 1996.

Henderson?s specific areas of research focus on the interconnection and interplay between environmental and genetic factors in the development, treatment and prevention of a wide variety of cancers. His work on the influences of reproductive hormones on cancer, as well as that of various dietary components, is both ongoing and widely cited.

?Science is about exploring frontiers, and Los Angeles is still a frontier town,? Henderson said when he became founding director of the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute. ?A great thing about USC is that it doesn?t put up the sorts of rigid walls that limit a researcher?s ability to explore.?

Henderson?s influence at the Keck School of Medicine has been widespread; he has been a driving force behind many of the school?s most ambitious and successful projects. His roles and titles have included:

? Founding chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine, which he helped to build into a department that, today, is recognized as one of the top preventive medicine departments in the world;
? Director of the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, a position he took in 1983, when the facility first opened; his influence was among those that turned USC/Norris into one of the leading institutions of its kind; and
? Director of the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, which opened in 2002, and where he led efforts that have thus far netted more than a dozen top-notch scientists.

Still, Henderson is perhaps most gratified by the work he does in recruiting and mentoring young scientists. ?Looking back, I?m really proud to have helped build the scientific base of the medical school,? he said in a 1999 interview. ?Mentoring students is something I just love.?

Henderson was inducted into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1992, and was awarded the Presidential Medallion, USC?s highest honor, in 1999.

Henderson?s early research focus was on virology, a pursuit that took him to Africa with the Arbovirology Unit of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he studied yellow fever. ?At that time, we knew virtually nothing about the causes of cancer,? Henderson once recalled. ?Then Congress passed the National Cancer Act and declared war on cancer.?

It was that war that brought Henderson to USC and to his long and storied cancer research career.

A native of California, Henderson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and his M.D. from the University of Chicago Medical School in 1962. He completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Henderson and his wife, Judith, reside in San Marino. They have five children.

conrats on the new dean! he sounds like a wonderful leader and very accomplished. very exciting times for keck.

anyone have an opinion on the fact that they chose someone from usc rather than highering someone from the outside...

If USC has such a great candidate, why not?

Anyone have word on financial aid yet?

You can call the financial aid office.

I gave them a call a few days ago, and they said I should be hearing around the end of next week. Only problem is I am moving soon (since I just graduated today) and then leaving the country for a little recreational trip. They have my home address, so I am hoping I'll get the financial aid info there before I leave.

I donno. I think they could have done better than Henderson for dean. He will be a great fund raiser, and I guess that is the most important thing nowadays.

I remember reading that our Fin Aid packages will be sent to us in July- kinda late, in my opinion...

BTW, I'm going to Keck for sure and moving down to LA the end of June- I was hoping to get a group of people together toward the end of July, start of August to go to a taping of the "Price is Right" I've been told that if we can get 20 people together, one of us will be picked as a contestant. Is anybody interested? 😎

haha. That's hysterical. I would totally be down to go to Price is Right together. What an awesome bonding experience. Time to start studying up on what random things cost.

Jalby, is there a difference between Monterey Hills and Monterey Park? My LA geography is pretty bad and I can't seem to locate Monterey Hills anywhere.

Also, any suggestions on how to find an apartment? newspapers, rental services, etc?

Thanks a bunch!

i just googled it cause im bored. i gather monterey hills is in or aka south pasadena, ca...different from monterey park. and if it is, here is the city website... http://www.ci.south-pasadena.ca.us/about/about.htm

hope that helps while we wait on jalbs.

lol. I feel so special. Monterrey hills is north of county, of the 110 at the via marisol exit. Monterrey Park is east of county, a mostly asain place with great food. As for getting an apartment in those areas, I'll hook you guys up with a realtor soon, or you can drive around Monterrey Hills and find the phone numbers of different people trying to rent.

Welcome to the class Jeremy! That would be hella fun to go to a taping of the "Price is Right", but I won't get there until the beginning of August, so I'll go with you guys if you go in August 🙂

That's cool that you're from Portland. I have snowboarded a couple of times at Mt. Hood and I visited Portland during my trips. It seems like a very cool city.

Yeah, I am dying to see my financial aid package. Trekkie, they told you that we should get them this week?

Oh and something else I have been thinking about:

Do you guys remember Dr. Arias' (I think that was her name--the ob-gyn) speach at the reception about how 'SC doesn't just accept people with high gpas and scores but also with big hearts, because compassion isn't really something that can be taught at med school? At first I kinda thought that it may just be propaganda, but after meeting some of my class and reading their posts on SDN, I kinda think that this may really be the case.

I am really excited to have such compassionate, mature and open-minded people in my future med school class.

Do a lot of students live in downtown? My parents saw this place called Promenade Towers and thought it would be a good place to rent ...

Anyone know what the average allotment for rent is?

Dara- I think I saw somewhere that the rent allotment is about $750. In coming to that amount, the financial aid office assumes that you're splitting a 2 bedroom or more with with roomate(s). I'm not sure, however, if that $750 includes utilities or not. Some apartments include water in the rent, which is nice. Also, that $750 probably won't cover the deposit either.

The allotted $750/mo for rent includes utilities--or at least that's what I was told during my financial aid meeting on 2nd look day.

Thanks guys ... $750 isn't too bad I think. $1500 is about normal for a two-bedroom apartment, at least the ones I've been looking at on the internet.

Still worried about everything though 🙁. With apartment, furnishings, car, and gas, I'm going to have bills up the wazoo, even with financial aid ... 🙁

Promonade is pretty good for downtown. There are a few (5ish) people who live there in each class. On a side note, I'm moving to Venice or Santa Monica. With my having to be at school at 6:30-7 every morning, the traffic shouldn't be that bad.

does anybody know what is the maximum amount of grant money (excluding scholarships) that USC gives out? is it entirely need-based or does merit factor in somehow too?

i'm just wondering if i can get enough grant money to offset the cost difference between USC and UCI. i just found out that UCI is giving me the max $6K grant, so now there is even a greater discrepancy between the two...

Coincidentally enough, I was just at the USC financial aid office earlier today and was informed that the maximum need-based grant they give is $5,000.

I would totally be up for a trip to the Price is Right as well. I am planning to move to LA around the beginning of July. I'd be up for any number of other bonding activities as well. 😀

And yeah, I was told over the phone to expect a financial aid award by the end of next week. Today, when I talked to the financial aid lady in person, however, she printed out my info and said she would call me with my award tomorrow. If you are working with the May 15 deadline to decide where you are headed, I might give the financial aid office a call and let them know that.

Looks like I'll be seeing y'all at USC. Anyone going to be in the LA area in June looking for housing? Also, I saw a post earlier about Costa Rica. I may be headed there in July for a medical spanish program.

I was planning on looking for an apartment around early to mid July. Anyone think that is going to be too late for an Aug. 1st move in?

Hey guys-

I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in sharing a house with me. My parents have left me with a two bedroom house in Studio City (which is about 12 miles from Keck) and I'm hoping to rent out the other room. The house has been rewly repainted and remodeled on the inside. The room can be left furnished (for those of you who may not want to have to buy a new desk and bed, I could leave them there). The room is pretty darn big - though I am not sure of the exact dimentions. The house has a medium sized back-yard with lots of trees and a large patio The living room has a big screen TV, leather couches, etc. Also the house has been recently equipped with a brand new central air-conditioning system. The kitchen has new cabinets, complete with a new dishwasher, stove, etc. Basically, if you don't have to bring anything except yourself, clothes, and your computer - and maybe your sense of humor! 😀

The rent is $950 - that includes gardening fees. I'd prefer a female roommate.
We could also car-pool to school and split the parking cost! 🙂

Oh and since I am from LA, I know the area really well so I could show you around...Oh and I'm really laid back, especially for a pre-med!

Anyone interested?

Hey all you guys getting housing done early- I'm interested cuz i won't have any time this summer until three weeks before school to arrange this stuff. If any of you are in need of a roomate PM me.

I'm a single white male (sounds like a dating service haha), 23, went to UC Davis, genetics major, have car, don't care about loud music (i'm quiet though), and I consider myself to be pretty socialable. The only thing that I really want in a roomate is someone clean- my current roomate leaves food out all the time and doesn't clean anything! So if you are one of those types that was raised to believe that leaving a pot of chile out on the counter for a week is ok- we probably wouldn't be good roomates.

If any of you are interested let me know; I'm gonna be visiting the LA area at the end of this month and to check some stuff out either way.

Peace

I just gotta say how impressed I am with some of the replies I've seen from some of my fellow Keck '08ers on the "Official Homo Premed Thread"
FYI, I'm straight, white male, but I consider myself very gay-accepting (I'm proud to live in Portland, OR- the gay marriage capitol of the USA)
emily 69, SoCalOrBust, snowbear, and baya- I'm really excited to be going to med school with some well-spoken, tolerant people like yourselves.
Every time I felt like putting my $.02 in, somebody from my future class had already responded with intellegent and sensitive comments. Very cool. 🙂

I'm also glad to have such open a diverse students to work with these next 4 years. I probably should have avoided that thread though. I just got really offended with some of the comments made there and just had to spill my thoughts- it ended up being an argument through 1 or 2 pages. But hey at least we found out how accepting some of our future classmates are of diversity! Keck representin'!

Lets just not start here what happened on that thread.

Yeah, I wanna third that notion.
I was definitely noted that many of the posts that I agreed with were coming from future USCers.
Made me proud of my choice to go there. Thanks, y'all.

Yikes! My slow a$$ connection wouldn't display the pages needed to purchase a permit for an hour after they became available.
I ended up getting a permit for lot 71 near Biggy-
Couldn't find a map either that showed where these lots were.
did i just buy a permit for a lot in Timbuktu?

on another note, i'm so excited to start school soon with you all.

Oh yeah, it's time to buy your parking permits today. 71 is the one that you want unless you feel like dropping a lot of $$$ and getting Biggy (HSC Structure)

out of curiousity, if by some miracle of god i get off the waitlist--although i'll admit, at this point i'm pretty sure i won't be, not being pessimistic--would there still be parking left? is it like ucla, where you're screwed for parking?

There probably won't be parking by late June

does studying make you so funny? sarcastic....keep it up.... 😉

but yes, if i get in, I'M screwed for parking....
but on the other hand, i've always wanted a motorcycle..i see them cruising through traffic on the freeway, and i get jealous....

Is it possible to get a parking permit if you don't have the vehicle's license plate number or registration info?

If I was planning to get a car at the end of summer, will it be too late to get a parking permit for lot 71 then?

yes it is possible to get a permit without a license plate number (i just did)... u just have to provide the vehicle info (make, year, etc).

I don't even have a car yet, but i will at the end of the summer like splat, so i don't even know the make ... so i guess i'm pretty much screwed huh?

Just buy it and put your parents car. They never actually check or probably even care about those kinds of things.

i think u can probably change the vehicle information later... my friend bought a new car in the middle of the year and he just changed the info on file and used the same permit.

that's good to know, thanks for the quick responses!

is it me...or is there something funny going on with the www.usc.edu site? maybe it's a late night tune-up or something
