Keck-USC Class of 2008!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how the first week of school works? On last years schedule it says that there is a week of orientation and then you start classes? When I called last week they said orientation is pretty much the same thing as the first week of school.I am trying to figure out how much time to leave myself when I move down there so I have enough time to move in but I don't want to get bored since I don't konw a single thing about the area! I was also wondering where the people who live in Monerey Hills go to get food etc. because there doesn't seem to be anything around there closer than S. Pasadena. Thanks for any help. 😕

Class starts Aug ninth, and there is a BBQ the wed before where you can get you big sib. As far as food is concerned, most students go to Vons in South Pasadena for grocerys.

sorry. Semi in class.

1. 71
2. Biggy (reverse if rich)
3. some new lot on San Pablo (donno name)
4. Free lot

Jalby,
Sorry if you already answered this elsewhere, but about this free lot...
do you have to get a permit for it, or do you just park?

Cause I don't see any permits for free on the permit-buying page.

(I don't expect to drive much, so I don't wanna shell out, but if it turns out that I really have to drive, I'd like to have an option left.)

No permit, just park.

Just like I thought, I forgot to get a permit on Saturday and didn't get on here to be reminded. I got an email from the permit sales guy yesterday and he said there were still permits available for lots 71 and SSP.

You know what gets me? I would no NOTHING about parking...when to buy the passes and what to get if it weren't for this message board. How come Keck has not sent any informatiaon on this? I feel like I've really had no communication from them whatsoever, unless I go out of my way to email them.

Anyway, much thanks Jalby, you're wonderful!!

You actually have someone else to thank. The guy who posted right before me. As for the lack of communication with the admin office, I donno. I would run some things differently.

Thanks Jalby and everybody for the parking info ... I got hsc lot 71. Yay! 🙂 🙂

For the student account info, i just entered my social security number ... is that right?

I just gotta say how impressed I am with some of the replies I've seen from some of my fellow Keck '08ers on the "Official Homo Premed Thread"
FYI, I'm straight, white male, but I consider myself very gay-accepting (I'm proud to live in Portland, OR- the gay marriage capitol of the USA)
emily 69, SoCalOrBust, snowbear, and baya- I'm really excited to be going to med school with some well-spoken, tolerant people like yourselves.
Every time I felt like putting my $.02 in, somebody from my future class had already responded with intellegent and sensitive comments. Very cool. 🙂

Thanks jeremy! I'm really glad that we have a bunch of open-minded people in our class. I'm excited to meet everyone in August!

apparently you can only buy permits during working hours. I just got Lot 71.

can someone explain this to me because i am a little confused... are lot 70 and 71 one in the same??
on the map the lot accross the street from the biggy/hsc structure says lot 70... is the lot 71 permit good for there or for some other lot??

71 is a different lot. Lot 70 is an outdoors lot right next to biggy. You can't park at 70 with a 71 permit and vice versa.

woohoo, i just got off the alternate waitlist! 🙂 i received a call from dean quinn this morning. go trojans! best of luck to everyone still waiting. :luck:

Congrats. That's a lot faster than I thought it would be.

wow, congratulations!!
yeah, that was fast wasn't it?

also, it's interesting to note that they are already dipping into the waitlist...can this be a good sign? or is it a bad sign? i.e., they only needed to fill a few spots, and have?

you know, i wish deans and the like would come on here and post...wouldn't this be the easiest way to get information out there, and ease the fears of neurotic pre-meds such as myself?

Lot 70 is RIGHT NEXT to Biggy?!@!? So why did we all get Lot 71?? Wouldn't Lot 70 be much closer?

How long of a walk is it from Lot 71 to class?

I don't think that students can actually buy passes to 70; at least it wasn't an option for me when I bought my pass.

umm.... is it possible to get a refund on parking permits??

I think 71 is across the street from Lot 70...so shouldn't be too much further.

thanks... i thought that something didn't quite match up... i imagine with all of the construction going on its tough to keep the maps up to date... when i was there for my interviews i had one in the new zilkha building... if it weren't for the help of a woman who saw me struggling with the map i never would have found it... it wasn't on there at all...

70 costs the same as Biggy and more than 71. I think you could have baught it, but I donno. 71 is still the best choice for the $$$.

Has anyone got their financial aid package yet? I've had my papers complete for a while...I'm worried...

On a side note I'm running for the admissions committee for next year. There are 2 spots and I am one of six people running. If I actually do win, I'll officially be retired from SDN forever.

Hi Emily (from an emily, hehe),

Don't worry just yet. I called them yesterday, and they said for people who got their papers in on time they'll be mailing them out today. So, depending on where you live, you should get it by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. But if you're curious to know, they'll give you the package over the phone. The lady I spoke to was very nice and did that for me.

They also have it online: usc.edu/oasis. Login with your SS# and birthdate.

I checked OASIS and it shows that all of my documents are in and my file is under review, but I can't find any results anywhere. I guess I'll just be patient.

I checked online and it showed the results for me, but it doesn't match what the lady told me on the phone a couple weeks ago! Hopefully it's just not finalized yet.

Yeah, what the financial aid lady told me during our mini-meeting after the accepted students' reception doesn't match what OASIS says either. I bet you the actual hard-copy financial aid letter will say yet another thing...

Is it just me or does financing medical education kind of scare any of you? Whether it's in loans or cash, it'll amount to well over $200,000...

Ummm.... my oasis account says "No REcords Found!" Uh oh... maybe I'm looking in the incorrect place? eeek!

Did you look under the link that lets you look at the status of your paperwork?
Maybe some of your paperwork is missing? or your FAFSA form?

I talked to the financial aid office today, and they were able to give me my whole package right over the phone. When I was on with them (pretty sure) they said that OASIS won't have our complete packages, just our loans listed. They also told me that the results were mailed out today, so we should be getting them in just a few days. I'm happy to finally have some numbers to work with when it comes to budgeting out this whole becoming-a-doctor thing!

Yes, I'm definitely going to Keck! I am SO excited. 🙂 And Mr. Reddly, I will post my call ASAP.

I find that so very reassuring. Thanks. 🙂

Hey, I don't mind going into debt to become a doctor- I don't plan on going into primary care, but even if I did, I know that I could eventually pay off my debts. Remember, educational loan repayment done right (financed over 20-30 years) will actually BOOST your credit score, and you can hopefully lock in some good interest rates through consolidation. It's actually in your interest to take a long time to pay off your loans, because if you paid them all off right away, you're losing that $ to invest long-term in something with a decent rate of return (stock market, or a home). My $0.02

Let us not forget the nice write-offs we get paying the interest on those loans.

Hey guys, here's the number of a realtor that I spoke with about renting in Monterey Hills. His name is John Abovian and his work number is 818.409.1028. I think he mainly sells property, but he gave my name and number to people who had condos/apartments for rent. I found his personal website using google. Hope this helps.

By the way, I woud love to go to a taping of Price is Right. I have lived in L.A. my whole life (minus four years of college) and I have always dreamed of being on Contestants' Row! Count me in. 👍

No! everything was in. At the reception I spoke with the counselor and everything was squared away. It didn't always say that. This is so weird. I've done it all!

Thanks, jeremy 🙂 I feel a tad better... I was looking into this site: http://www.aamc.org/students/medloans/start.htm and I felt better, too. This site is through AAMC so I think the information is more reliable than other "student loan" sites which are privately run. Anyway, for those of you interested in this, it explains all the types of federal loans, repayment info, interest info, etc. I found it to be very useful.

It just seems like so much money but the long terms gains are inquantifiable, especially if you factor in job security and a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in "doing good". I'm sure it'll be good to raise my credit score, like you said, especially cause I've never had to buy a car myself.

I just called the fiancial aid office. They are picking up their phones today because they are done with the first batch of financial aid letters. The lady said these letters (which were sent sometime yesterday) will only reflect federal loans but not all types of aid (university loans, grants, private loans). Other types of aid notification will be sent out "some time later" according to her. Anyway, gsx, it's worth a call. Their number is (323)442-1016.

I know I've asked this before but when the exact date of this year's white coat ceremony? My parents and friends are bugging me...thanks...

Yeah... This question has crossed my mind once or twice- Jalby, care to fill us in on this one? I suppose we'll get all the info when we get our big packets in June, but I wouldn't mind knowing now.

UGH. I just got the best and worst call. Vanderbilt just offered me a spot. They were very high on my list and I don't know what to do.

congrats on vandy patzan! i can't say much cuz i don't know much about it except it has a very good reputation ... maybe it will come down to location?

on another note, what are you guys doing about roommates? are most people going to live with another student, with a nonstudent, by themselves, at home, or what? just wanted to gauge what people are doing ...
