Got a fridge for sale now. Anybody interested??? It's extremely nice. I donno how much I am going to sell it for yet. And I'll get the demensions of it soon. Off to a party.

Yo, a heads up for those future Keckers coming from out of state... L.A. has a unique tradition whereby many, if not most, apartments do NOT come furnished with a fridge. I have no idea how this started (maybe a health code thing) but be forewarned that it is highly likely you will need to become the proud owner of a refrigerator upon your arrival in the City of Angels. And believe me, you will not be wanting to lug that sucker around changing apartments every year, so do a thorough job of selection the first time around.

Are you serious????? That truly truly sucks ........

I've lived in 6 different apartments in Los Angeles, and the only one that has given me a fridge was the UC:A grad school housing. But my new one is giving me a fridge, so I can't complain.

What about washers and driers? I was shown a place last week and it had a washer/drier hookup but I don't think they were included with the place... Next thing, we'll probably hear we have to provide the kitchen sink as well 😉

Yeah no kidding heh 🙂 But I guess they figure you can just go to a laundry mat. May save you electricity in the long run but it's a hassel to go.

hi...nope I don't get the cool stuff you med students get. I am going to the pharmacy school. I'm still a fellow trojan!!! I like this thread...it's pretty cool. I hope you guys don't mind if I post on here sometimes. Like if I know something you may need to know or to ask something you guys know but I don't know. 😛 By the way any of you like going to sporting events? I do and I plan on trying to meet people that do so we can go togethter.

Hey all,
I am a new relatively new addition to the class of 2008 (very new to SDN) and wanted to say hello!
Also had some questions as to when classes/orientation starts and when is the white coat ceremony? Have seen some conflicting dates here. Thanks

Thanks docmemi! I will see you all in a few weeks.

Two weeks until The Price is Right! I need to get an idea about who will be going- please private message me to reserve a spot... I've got several tickets left. When you send me your message, please leave your name and some contact info. Show will be taping on July 22...

i wish i could go with you guys, but i will be out of town until the end of july... i hope you guys have fun though!

Alright....so I'm getting kinda anxious here.

Still haven't received my packets ("you'll get them next week") and I'm flying out to Cali in less than two weeks. So does anyone have any good advice of where to start looking for apts. It seems that the general consensus is Monterey Park or South Pasadena/Pasadena, but are there certain apt. complexes in particular that lots of med students rent at? Just so I know where to start when I'm driving around this area aimlessly.

Also, do most of these complexes provide parking? Off-the-street or even covered?

Monterrey HILLS, not park

hey guys,

i am writing right now from a tropical island off the coast of rio de janeiro and it~s absolutely beautiful here! i hope everyone is enjoying their summers 🙂

has anyone received anything in the mail lately (i got the first packet, wondering about the second and the third)? anything super time sensitive? thanks for you guys? help and i will see you on august 9th.

oh and i am stoked ~cuz we found an awesome apartment in s. pasadena and i love it. i am so excited that i had a dream that i had already moved last night.

congrats jdc5, i was rooting for you.

Hey Guys. Got a fridge for sale for 200$ and a washer and dryer for sale for 50$ each. If interested, PM me. I would like to get rid of them very soon, though.

hey,

I know cell phone service has been discussed before...but no one mentioned T-mobile...does anyone have any experience with this company in LA?

Hi all,

Can someone post how to get to Monterey Hills from the med school campus? My roommate and I are going to look at apartments this weekend, and we want to swing by Monterey Hills to see if anything is available (as our internet search has been very uncooperative in finding places in this area). Thanks!

There's not much left in Monterey Hills. I'd suggest Alhambra if you're looking to find a place for you and your roommate. I was looking over the weekend with my new roommate and we ended up finding a great deal in Alhambra- it's closer than Pasadena or South Pasadena, and you'll get more apartment for the $.

are we supposed to register ourselves on oasis? or are they going to tell us where to officially enroll? i'm confused....

Yeah, we're keeping our options open ... the more places to look at, the better. 🙂 What's Alhambra like? Did you find a nice neighborhood?

My roommate and I are going this weekend to search out places ... so you were able to get it done in a couple of days?

I'd been looking off and on over the past few weeks, but after a morning of checking out possibilites in Monterey Hills, South Pasadena, Alhambra, and Pasadena, the apartment in Alhambra was the best balance of cost, location, and amenities. We're going to be in the neighborhood just east of Garfield and south of Huntington (close to the In'n Out)- it's a nice little place, still close to Pasadena, and an easy commute down Valley to the HSC. There are still apartments renting in the area, just drive around and call the #s on the signs.

I still haven't gotten a physical for the student health forms!!! It's getting late and I don't really have any health insurance right now (would really like to be able to get the physical once school is started and we have some sort of insurance).

Any suggestions? Know any places around L.A. that are not too expensive and don't have too long of a waiting list? (somehow that sounds impossible)Or did I just procrastinate entirely too long?

Thanks.

Hey...I'm in a similar situation (between insurance) and I got my physical for free from one of the residents at the family health center across the hallway from Student Health in 1510 San Pablo St., right in the same plaza as USC University Hospital- head on down and see if you can get in touch with Dr. Forman- he's the medical director of the student health center and probably can get one of the residents to do your physical for free. They do bloodwork over in the basement of 1520 to get all of your titers- you do have to pay for that one, but it's a LOT cheaper than getting the bloodwork done elsewhere- Student Health will give you the form for your bloodwork, after you get the physical. Hope this helps you (and fellow procrastinators) out!

Not to mention one of the coolest doctors you will ever meet in real life. He used to play in Sublime and is cited on one of their albums. One of a ton of extremeyl cool (as in funny, socially aceptable) doctors you will meet at Keck/USC.

looks like this incoming uSC has got either a lot of spirit or lotta free time, or have been brainwashed by jalby to spend a lotta time on the forums 🙂

yayay. do you guys go around telling eachother or something? or did student affairs tell y'all?

I got my sources.

Sorry for this repeat posting on parking, but I went to the parking website and only HSC SSP is available. Where is that and is it even worth the $250. Are there any other options?
Thanks....

if ssp is far you might as well park in the free employee parking lot 9 across from the hospital (on marengo i think...opposite cross street from hosp as the med school). ill see if i can find ssp for you guys.

maybe you can call 213.740.3575 and ask where on the map ssp is cause i cant find it.

Camstah and I still have tickets available for anybody who wants to join all of us on the Price is Right this thursday! Private message either one of us if you want to go...

What's the dress-code for the white coat ceremony? Do we have to dress all fancy or are we conveniently hidden behind big white coats? Just wondering.

And another question: when do we send in our transcripts? if ever. I once heard a rumor that USC doesn't need the final transcript. . . which would be awesome. . less paperwork to deal with. . just wondering if any of you know.

Thanks.

I heard that the white coat ceremony is graduation-esque... wear what you would to your graduation. It isnt til the 20th, so we have time to worry about it later... I am sure they will tell us more.

Hello all, first time on SDN,

Up till last week I was planning on going to the USC MD/PhD program, but then I was taken off the waitlist at Northwestern. I really need input as to the strength and weaknesses of these 2 schools, compared with each other. If you guys arent as familiar with their PhD programs, then any input on the MD school is fine also. I have to decide SOON!!

Thanks all

i don't know if this will prove useful or not, but i've started a yahoo group for the class of '08 just email:
[email protected]
and you'll be added!!

i think there's a thread about this...someone else had the same dilemma...search function? otherwise, i don't really know much about the differences...but good luck on your decision!! 🙂

To Calypso: I think the best way to approach something like this is to ask yourself where you would be the happiest. Do you have friends, family, sig others in LA that you'll miss if you went to Northwestern? Have you already done the whole LA thing and looking for an adventure? I can tell you that no matter what you choose, you've been given a great gift, and you should be proud. 🙂

Chicago is a fantastic place, and the Northwestern Med School is in absolutely the best location of any med school ever (downtown Chicago, in the heart of the shopping district 😍 ) but again there's only so much shopping and clubbing you can do. And remember, it's frickin' cold in the winter. I personally prefer LA for the greater cultural diversity and better weather.

To Jalby and other USC MS2's ... maybe you can tell Calypso about the research opportunities there? I can only say that, as an undergrad at NU, I've been exposed to some fantastic research faculty ... plus having Children's Memorial is also a plus. But of course I am pro-USC so someone help me out here ...

Oh, and my roommate and I found a place last weekend! YAY! Unfortunately, I won't be able to meet you all until school starts, as my work doesn't end until August 5th. Poo ...

Still have the washer and dryer for sale in Monterrey Hills if anybody is interested. e-mail me at [email protected]. 100$ total for both.

jalby, how do you possibly have time to post on these boards when you are starting clerkships?

SD has been good, great place to live and great school too. we have a long vacation, so i'm definitely enjoying that. school is lotta work, but at least we dont have the stress of AOA. my friends that are starting 2nd yr, some are disappointed at their end of the year scores b/c it determines AOA.
