LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was waitlisted as well. Quite bummed out. 😕 My letter said the approved class size for 2008 has been achieved. Why are they still interviewing??

I'm can't wait for PBL actually. I feel like I always learned the most while in groups, I enjoy bouncing ideas off of other people, and I think learning how to work together in a group (or a practice 🙂) to solve a problem is a great skill to always be working on.

Obviously all of the pathways have worked well and produced excellent physicians, so this is definitely more of a "I'm excited for PBL" post rather than a "the other pathways aren't for me" post.

That being said, I'm looking forward to the day Erie gets hit with 3 feet of snow and I can kick back with my books and a cup of coffee in my den while those LDPers start up the snowmobile 🙂

I just feel like it ain't broke don't fix it....I just feel like PBL would just teach me earlier in terms of getting right in to the clinical aspects. Plus in college I always ended up reading the whole book and explianing things to other people...plus there were only 8 people in my major so I figured I would be good at the small group thing.....so i guess I'm simply convincing myself here haha. Anyway look forward to working closely with people I like group discussions.

I think they always waitlist xtra b/c alot of people pay the deposit waiting for an acceptance from another school...so I'm sure alot more spots will open up. There is still a really good chance you'll get in!!

Plus, you have been waitlisted early on and that is a good sign. That means that more than likely you will be on the top of the list when someone else backs out. Don't sweat it.

I just e-mailed Amy Rowe with a mini-freak out after seeing 2 people waitlisted in such a short time. She said the same thing as Joelle--the class status changes all the time.

anyone accepted need a roommate? PM me :hello:

I found out I was put on the waitlist as well. However, I'm going to be declining my spot on the waitlist and withdrawing my application. If I had been accepted, I probably would have chosen WVSOM anyway so this wasn't a huge disappointment for me.

Good luck to everyone!! :luck: And congrats to those accepted!! 🙂

Good luck to those interviewing March 29. I'll see you there!!

Wait-listed at LECOM-Erie. 🙁
Kinda bummed out b/c it was my top choice.

Say a prayer for me!!!!

I had a friend who three years ago was wait listed and is now completing their third year. So all you wait listed peeps keep your chin up and be on the lookout for a letter taking you off the wait list and into a seat.

I just got back from my LECOM-E interview. I really liked the school. I felt like I would fit in here. I think my interview went good. It seemed fast, but I don't know if that is good or bad. They said the committee will make a decision next Wed and mail out letters next Friday. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

I just received a letter saying that they put me on the Wait List because the class is filled already. Good luck to everyone. *feeling indifferent*

that sucks! i wish i had been prepared to hear this before i flew into erie this morning! i still would have come because i'm really really interested in the school, but wow.
i even got barfed on on the plane here 🙁 bad day... 👎

I bet that was fun.

yeah and i still had to make a connection to ERI... so I stunk up the whole plane .. my wool coat is ruined.. my backpack is ruined. 😡 the puker managed to escape.. i wish i knew who they were.. :meanie:

Hey a baby behind me got sick on the plane yesterday on my way to Erie. Which one were you at the interview this morning?

So I got to the airport this afternoon to find out my flight was delayed for service which would make me miss my connecting flight in Philly. There was not a later flight to Houston tonight, so I'm in Erie for another night. I have no car though, so I'm stuck in my hotel room. 🙁

I want to order chinese food but it says minimum $15 for delivery. I'm a little thing and can't eat $15 worth of food haha. I can never finish my one meal of chinese food because they always give you so much.

are you out by the airport? if you're downtown i think there are a bunch of us going out and you're welcome to join us (even though i have no idea who you are 🙂 )

Thanks for the offer, but I don't have anything to wear. I can come in my suit from today or in grey sweats. I didn't bring anything else bc I wasn't planning on spending the night again haha.

Thanks! I have to get up at 4:30 in the morning anyways and I got up at 5:30 this morning, so I'm going to get to bed early.

Hey Axebjc!! Glad to hear the interview went well. I believe mine went well. The panel was great! All the questions were basically off the list and the reading material was pretty simple.

Did the panel let you know about the committee decision and when they were going to send out letters? I spoke with the student reps. and they said they believe that they were still accepting and that the student size was to be 300? Do you think that they were informed when they made that statement?

Anyway, best of luck, and hopefully a congratulatory letter will be in the mail within the next week.

Does anyone know what the expected class size is going to be?

I'm not sure what the class size is supposed to be but 300 seems pretty high...I just know from the other posts I saw that the class has been filled and I think they're interviewing now to alternative positions??? I'm not sure thought so don't quote me on this thats just the impression I'm under.

The class size from previous years was 270; I don't know if it has been increased as the rumors go.

Do anyone knows if they are sending any more interview invites?

Hey everyone, I posted this on Facebook, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to add a short bio on here too, since I want to live with a roommate next year.

I'm a graduating senior originally from WI. The only thing I ever let get disorganized is my room. I can't stand dirty bathrooms/kitchens/common spaces, so I clean whenever I get the chance. I study a lot and I like to run. Not a big partier but I like to have fun too. I also like cooking/baking, and I hope to either have a small pet of my own, or live with someone who already has one (this is obviously not a deal-breaker tho, just something I think would be nice).

Oh, I'm also really outgoing and talkative. So, if you're interested in living with me, send me a message. Oh, I'm also female.

Thanks! See you all soon!
And congrats to everyone!

Hi all,
Yes they have added interviews through April because I just found out that I have one on April 18th! Woo-hoo . . . anyone know if someone interviewing this late still has a chance (I applied late there, long story)?

I don't want to burst your bubble but at this point you may be interviewing for a waitlist position. I interviewd March 6th and got waitlisted. In the letter they said the class size had been filled. I think many are waiting for the april 15 date to decide whether or not they will goto LECOM b/c that's when deposits are due. So there will be spots open after that. I don't know what your odds are but if you've got an interview, you've got a chance. If you don't goto the interview then you've got no chance. GL.

Anybody heard anything about loan info yet? I haven't heard from them in some time now. Just curious.

When was your file complete at LECOM?

I finished my file in mid February

I think mine's was finished around late February.

So I guess I'm still confused as to why they would add more interview dates if the class is full, I mean don't get me wrong I am extremely excited to have an interview, but are they still looking to fill spots, or is the waitlist just not long? Does anyone know how many people they will be putting on the waitlist?

So, did a lot of people drop out from the C/O 2011?

So, did a lot of people drop out from the C/O 2011?

I would say most schools give out about twice the numbers of acceptances compared to how many actually matriculate. So last year there were probably about 500+ acceptances handed out and eventually 270ish matriculated. As it gets later in the application cycle they adjust how many students they need/want.

Much is in the air about whether or not spots are open and whether current interviews are for waitlist spots.

I believe 300 spots are a lot of spots to fill and I would wager that some spots are open currently and as previously stated, many will open April 15th.

For those interviewing, you might want to weigh your options. Are you willing to take a PBL, primary care or IDL pathway? If so, make it clearly visible that you are, even stating to the point that LECOM is my dream spot and absolutely love the idea of the above pathways?

It was clearly evident that your spot is an investment to them and that they don't want to offer a position to someone that will not accept it. Therefore, if you let them know LECOM is your one and only spot, you might increase your chances of acceptance.

Someone remarked to me that the LECOM facility and the appearance of there old High School. Once I thought about it, yes it really does remind me of my High School. But people have to realize, colleges tend to have a smaller campus especially if the college in specific to one field like Osteopathic medicine or Pharmacy.

I believe LECOM to have it all, appropriate facility, links to hospitals and an extremely reasonalbe tutition rate. I am favor of the dress code as well. I believe that social preparation is as necessary as the education.

So Lisa, do you know what may have been the reasons the people left? With a class that big, have you got a chance to talk to each person in the class at least once?

I spoke to one of my first year friends and she told me that they usually lose a bunch of students by the white coat ceremony in January (which is why one of them told me LECOM waits to have it) because they just aren't cut out for medical school. She said it seemed like those that didn't make it just were too lazy to put in the daily work necessary to succeed.

I didn't really think of it as a High School building. However the dress code, alphabetical seating chart, and no water allowed in lectures kind of reminds me of one. LECOM is a great school but I wonder if those rules are necessary.

I'm in favor of the dress code, and the students I spoke to were, as well. I had to have that dress code throughout high school, and it was a pubic school, so I am used to it. Plus I figure, might as well get in the habit of dressing like a professional now. Plus it makes the school look good rather than have everyone in sweats.

No water I understand because everyone has their laptops in the lecture hall... One spill = big problems. Plus the school does laptop repairs for free, so any water accidents could cost them $$$.

Alphabetical seating is dumb. My friend's last name start's with Z and all of her friends are the W's, Y's, and Z's, haha.

As I was leaving Erie to Cleveland, I took a ride through Presque Isle State Park. It was marvelous! I mean, even in the winter with color lacking and the trees barren, I could imagine the seasons. The stretch is long and would make more an incredible bike ride. I did see a amusement park at the western edge though. I wonder what that is like.

At the interview, the panel emphasized a close knit community and a place to get to know the public. I am very much in favor this because I feel like I have been moving so frequently due to school. I want to set up shop and start to build upon the community. Erie seems likes like a good place to do it. A reasonably large population with outlets to major cities (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and even Philadelphia, New York City). Plus you are near the waterfront.

Any thoughts? What about those students that have lived there for a while, is there a community feeling? Or are you too busy studying to take it in?

Presque Isle is a great venue for a bike ride. They actually have races there a couple times per year, including one coming up the last weekend of April. I always look forward to that race, and now I'm looking forward to riding there every week!

There are tons of reasons. Everyone is different. They either failed, went to post-bacc, quit b/c they decided it was too hard, or quit even though they did well. Its personal.

And no I have definitely not spoken to everyone in the class. That's a lot of people.

What do you ride? Do you know of any student clubs for cycling?

We are looking into buying a house. We are going to be in Erie May 13-17 to look and hopefully find a house. I have a question though about applying for a mortgage. Will we have to get a co-signer if we will be living off of student loans? We will qualify for a 100K + house with my current job and we are looking around the 75K range. Do they only verify your income until closing or do they ask about your future income? Did anyone else already go through this? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
