LECOM-Erie Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi this is not a reply, for some reason i cant type a new thread but i have an interview tomorrow but lecom never called to confirm my attendance which i thought was what the portal said. i am already at erie but am worried and got here too late to call. did everyone receive phone calls confirming their attendance?

Don't worry!!! I didn't get a call either - drove to Erie (14 hour trip) and was worried about it. I just went to the interview like normal and there was no problem, my name was on the list.
I was extra worried because my original date was 3/18/11, and I changed it for earlier...but what I'm really trying to say is - don't worry 🙂

first, thank you for writing back so quickly because i was definitely freaking out!! i am still a bit concerned because initially when i received the email there were no attachments. i then received a second email from judy farnum apologizing and resent the attachments. i responded to her rather than the initial email address so i guess i am just worried it wasnt forwarded maybe to the correct place because altho she is in admissions it says "IT" after her name. ahhh! hope it works out cause i am 10 hours away too! but thanks for providing me with some relief!

Not to mention, the interview atmosphere was really relaxed, and since it's group interviews - they could just stick you in one if it came down to that (which I don't think it will). wow, what a run-on sentence! BTW, I responded by phone - so there was literally no record that I could prove that I had confirmed.

haha well i appreciate your support! hope your interview here went well! good luck with everything!

@ hopingtobe: I didn't get a call either and I replied via email. I did call on the day before the interview and they said I was already confirmed.

@ To any current students: when do you get your first loan disbursement check? According to the website it says two week after the start of the semester. Is that accurate? Thanks

I interviewed 2-25 and got waitlisted today. Anyone already with an acceptance want to give it to me? I'll give you a lifetime supply of hi-fives

Exactly two weeks after the first day of class, so it's like the third Monday of your semester. You're on your own for everything up until then including rent, books, et cetera. Luckily, you only need the bare minimum book-wise for the first thirteen weeks--just the Gray's textbook, an atlas (Netter's has great drawings, Rohen's great cadaver photos), and a study guide for embryo that's like $7 from the bookstore.

One more question for current students: what's the deal with macs not being supported? Do people have macs or is it really no Mac at all?
Macs are fine, and I would say prolly over a quarter of my class has them (including me.) The IT people just won't be able to help you if something happens to it, but then again, it's a Mac and that rarely happens anyways 🙂 If you want a Mac, buy it.

I was nervous about that too. I even called them to make sure. I don't think they called anyone to confirm, they really should take that out of the email.

I'm not a current student, but I remember one posting a few pages back. I am pretty sure they said that they see plenty of people using macs, the IT department just doesn't "support" them. (i.e they will probably try and fix any issues but may not be 100% successful)

but then again, it's a Mac and that rarely happens anyways 🙂 If you want a Mac, buy it.

Sorry Slane, I had to.

Slane u rock! A few more quickies:

1. Are snow tires a must?
2. Since your doing pcsp.. Are you going away for your third year?
3. So you basically applying to residences after like 2-3 rotations?

Thanks!

I grew up in Erie. Snow tires would be useful. Tonight its doing that in-the-middle snow/ice rain/rain mix, tomorrow the roads will be covered in ice and snow. 🙂

Invest in a nice heavy duty ice scraper with a brush on the end if possible. The snow plows do a good job but it's only on the main streets where you can almost see cement.

Soo looked out my hotel room and there's like 6in of snow...is the interview still going on today? I hope so.

LECOM doesn't cancel anything for snow. I vaguely remember them telling us they've closed the school for snow twice since it opened, and both days were for apocalyptic blizzard-like snowstorms.

I definitely recommend buying snow tires. Don't bother with studded ones, we don't get any ice hardly, just a lot of powder and slush. For PCSP, we start our rotations a year from Monday. We actually have three clinical rotations before we take our boards. We have classes all this summer though to get us ahead of the rest of the year. Then they just throw out like ten elective rotations and condense a few of our core rotations (like surgery becomes four weeks for us) to drop that fourth year. When we apply for residencies, yes, we'll have rotated less than traditional students, but all of our rotations will have been focused on primary care. I'll prolly be staying in this area for rotations just so I don't have to move again.

They make such a big deal about the NO APPLE COMPUTERS thing...and then they allow macs. I have an older macbook right now, and I plan on getting a new laptop in the next few months. I would love to buy another mac because the thought of going to a PC makes me uneasy...but I don't want to show up at LECOM and have the IT people tell me they can't configure it to the system or that I can't use the necessary software. Hm, decisions decisions.

They don't really configure anything. They tap into the LECOM wireless on your comp and input the 5 character magic password to allow you to have access at any of the LECOM buildings and check to see that you have antivirus and microsoft office software. That's it. The no MAC policy is probably more for if you have comp problems and wish to bring it up to them, they either a) don't deal with macs by policy or b) have limited knowledge to help fix them.

The disclaimer is just there to cover the IT department in case they can't fix a problem with a Mac, although they're all really nice and I know a lot of them are able to help with Mac problems, even though the handbook says they're not. If your Mac physically dies, you'll still have to go through Apple for repairs, but Erie Computer on Peach Street is an authorized service center and does excellent, quick work (my hard drive died in January, and they had it replaced in two days.)

To those with Macs, don't replace them. To those that want Macs, by all means buy one.

Thanks!! Best news I have gotten all day.

I just withdrew my acceptance to PBL pathway. Good luck waitlisters!

Oooh, now the decision becomes about money. I would spend a lot more on a mac, but I like them more. Why does money have to make things complicated?

I am going to the Seton Hill campus but they have the same sternly worded "no Macs" warning for us, too. 🙄 I ended up buying a Windows laptop, boy did I hate going over to the Dark Side. 😛 Like you, I was worried that they would refuse to help me if I had a problem and I don't need that during my 1st year of med school. I have a 3.5 year old Macbook that is still going strong and I am simply going to use both computers. It's actually kind of cool to have 2 laptops.

I still like the Mac more.🙄

I was able to get an absolutely loaded 17 inch laptop with a Blu Ray player for under $950. I had never shopped for Windows machines and never relized how much cheaper they were.

I still like my Mac better. 😉

To continue beating the Mac dead horse:

Are there applications that will not work on a Mac that we are required to use? I'm particularly worried that since I'm in ISP, there will be lessons on a software that I cannot support.

I guess an easy way to settle everyone's Mac questions: is the only reason they say "No Mac" is because of technical support issues and not compatibility problems?

Also - So they'll still set the macbooks up for wireless access and input the passwords? OR do they just tell us the passwords and we put them in ourselves?

There's no chance I'm buying a PC, but I am buying a new macbook pro!

If we need PC based software then I'll dual boot.

I can't exactly answer your question but I can answer this: there is no software that you can not use on a Mac BECAUSE you can use bootcamp and install windows. Therefore all software will work.

Ps nice to see another ISPer 🙂

I've heard that the board review software they used at one point in time ran on Windows machines only, but as mentioned, you can use BootCamp to dual-boot OS X with Windows or use something like Parallels Desktop to run a virtual Windows installation (the latter is my personal preference.) Not sure if that software is still that way or not, as board review stuff from the school seems to change every year. The only other software I know of is the anatomy virtual dissection package for the PBL students, but they have a Java version that runs on almost any operating system.

I know it's been over discussed but I'm still at a loss for apartments.

What is the name of the apartments across from lecom and how can I get on a waiting list? Thanks!

Laurel Springs is right across from the school, and Laurel Ridge is right next to the school across Ellsworth. Pastore is the developer of both of those complexes, so you'll want to call their office and get on a waitlist ASAP. The list is usually really long, but it should move solidly in May when the OMS-II's head out of town after boards. My roommate just got a single in Laurel Springs for next year.

Hey all!

I have been accepted to KCUMB but I have an interview at LECOM on the 25th. LECOM is a much cheaper option so I am curious about the school. But at this point in the application cycle am I just going to end up on the wait list? Anyone know if the class is filled? If I called the school do you think they would tell me? I do not want to make an $600 flight and miss two days of school for a wait list spot.

Thanks!

Our waitlist letters say it is full, but I think they have some spots left. If you think you'll attend KCUMB no matter what, go ahead and take that. If you think LECOM might be your first choice, well what's another $600, right?

Just wondering if anybody that interviewed 3/4/11 has had their status changed to having reached a decision and that a letter is being sent.

I interviewed 3/4/11 and last week Wednesday my portal changed to saying that they had made a decision. I got it in the mail today- waitlisted.

Trying to remind myself there is still a chance, but it sucks!

I read your post and had to laugh. I am in the same boat as you (accepted to KCUMB and interviewing at LECOM on the 1st [supposed to be the 25th but I had to move it because that's when I'm defending my masters thesis]). Lucky for me I only live 2 hours away from Erie right now so it's an easy trip. Good luck!

My portal still has not changed, but I got an email saying that I need all my LOR, however, the Dr. writing the DO letter has not sent it yet...I too am trying to remind myself that there is still a chance. I'm hoping that they were considering waitlisting me or accepting me. I would hope that LECOM would not ask me to send a DO letter only to turn around and say "no thanks" - unless they are not even looking at the apps until it's all there.

How strict was the March 1st Matriculation Packet Deadline? I'm still waiting on my physical etc. and just about had a heart attack when I realized that I am past the deadline (for some reason I thought it was May 1). Not sure how something so important gets jumbled in my brain. Hoping for some good news here!

An e-mailed reply from the admissions office said it's not a STRICT deadline, but please get your stuff in ASAP. My physical is next week; it was simply not possible to schedule a physical with my pcp in the amount of time given.

Does anyone know when financial aid letters will be done?

I have had my FAFSA filled out since early February. A bunch of SDN posts said the FAFSA was late if submitted after Jan 2nd.

Don't worry about Jan 2nd... most people don't have enough info to do there FAFSA til end of January... There is some kind of "priority" deadline in March... Don't know how much it matters at this point.

If your financial aid stuff is done and the school has taken care of it, it should appear under financial aid on the portal. I can't remember if we got an e-mails saying it was done last year or not... Either way just keep checking. I don't believe I got mine until late April or May last year.

I got my financial aid letter a few weeks ago, but I did fill out my FAFSA like Jan 2, so you should probably be getting your letter soon. I wouldn't worry too much!

Humph. I have MOST of my packet completed but also couldn't get a physical until next week (thought it would be not kosher for me to fill it out myself...plus it specifies MD/DO signature so....)
Still carrying around those papers in my appointment book. I've had about one day off all month.

I am doing ISP as well (on the waitlist for PBL). BTW if anyone didn't check it out we are now ranked in the US News and World Reports. We are number 63 in primary care ranked above notable schools such as Cornell, Dartmouth, Stoney Brook, NYU, and Temple.

PBL and undeclared (they let me change it...but, funny thing, I am spending all day tomorrow on my one day off with my local coveted family medicine residency program....)
I actually am thinking of requesting a switch to ISP. I know a few folks who are ISP and want PBL. I thought it might be an easy switch but seems not so much. Thoughts?
I was told I couldn't do ISP and virtual anatomy though...anybody know otherwise? I really don't want to do cadaver anatomy again (it would be my third time in anatomy lab...mmmm....)

Hey! I'm doing ISP and undeclared..

What about you?
