Has anyone heard about this school? I saw it mentioned on another thread and I did some research on them. Apparently they are close to getting accreditation?

I am curious.....

I've been keeping my eye on Midwestern since last year and would be psyched to apply there (I loooove the desert). I'm hoping that more info. will be available soon 'cause I don't even know if I would meet their requirements or how much OOS tuition would be...

Hmm More schools? Not so cool for the current job outlook for new grads... lol 😕 :scared::scared:

Agreed. There's talk about 2 more in NY in the future as well on top of larger class sizes in the next few years. While this might be good news for applicants... :what:

I'm really confused why they're thinking about doing this (unless they're going to be private schools). Does New York really have enough money to have 3 vet schools? I just don't understand why even if there's a supposed "need" for vet schools why there would ever be a need for 3 in one state, rather than building one of them in a state without a vet school.

LMU - a university truly in the middle of nowhere! Makes Blacksburg look like NYC in comparison!

I don't know anything about Arizona other than we just lost our theriogenologist to a Deans position there - we're jealous and upset!

Hofstra (?) was rumored to be considering one. Dunno if they still are or not.

I'm not sure if the extra schools and seats are just about $$$ or what, but it's sure confusing...especially after that Times article and the reports that followed. I severely hesitated before deciding to apply this cycle 🙁

Just look at Cornell's in-state tuition and the recent tuition increases at CUNY and SUNY schools. In my opinion, No, New York does not have the money to support more vet schools. The one they were talking about in Buffalo sounds like it would be private: http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/buffalo/former-gates-hospital-to-be-vet-school (warning: extremely misguided quotes in this article about "filling a great void" may induce severe rage) .

Did you guys notice that there's information about Midwestern on the VMCAS website now? Tuition hasn't been posted yet.

Ya and they have pre-reqs listed. Crazy. le sigh

I just. No. We don't need more vet schools :scared:

MOAR MOAR MOAR

We have a shortage of veterinarians. It's driving up the costs of vet care. If more people could be vets costs would be cheaper. And don't get me started on rural medicine. There is not one single vet in my county that covers 6000 square miles and has only 900 permanent residents. Who will take care of all the cows?

If LMU actually starts the Vet School, SNL should do a spin off "Appalachian Vet Emergency Room." Maybe the two shows could merge, "Sorry doctors, I don't know how my chihuahua ended up in there. I was just standing spread legged above him and slipped and fell." 😆

*this is purely a joke and not meant to offend anyone.

To be fair, AVMA now is just for accrediting. There are enough people who want to to to vet school no matter what that the current market forces favor more vet school. Sucks.

By just for accrediting I mean their stance on vet schools is if you meet the accreditation criteria we will accredit you. They're taking a hands off approach to controlling the number of vet schools. I don't like that they are doing this, but I see their side.

I wasn't trying to say all AVMA does is accredit schools.

Soon, we will be as watered down as pharmacy and dental schools... Too many, with too many unemployed graduates. I am guessing that the acceptance standards would probably go down as well if too many schools pop up.

Requirements are up... the school has no teaching hospital as of yet and quite honestly I have no idea where the hell they would build one in that area, they have some free land available but not a huge amount (however, they have plans drawn up to make one as well as a large animal hospital, so who knows). That area is really well developed right now as it is. Also, large animals... Arizona... Horses, yes. Cows, sheep, pigs, poultry... not so much. You really have to travel to find them (I had to drive a good 45 minutes just to get horse experience in Arizona). Also, something about attending a school its first year in the works would literally scare me... a lot. I looked at their website and they don't even have their website developed yet.. the requirements are on the VMCAS website and they require a supplemental application but there is no mention of what it is or where it is... already off to a great start. To add to that, they have no working curriculum set up for the vet school, looked everywhere couldn't find one, which leaves me wondering if they have even figured that out. They are supposedly set to be fully accredited by 2018, but we shall see... doesn't appear like they are off to a great start to me.

Imagine if you applied, got in, went there, and then come 2018 they didn't receive their accredidation... :scared:

Definitely not worth the risk!

:scared: That is why I wouldn't do it. It would probably even save me a good $100,000 or so long-term to start over and go to school there, but isn't worth it, for this reason and many others.

I totally agree. I checked out their website again today and feel there's too much unknown. While I love the area, I'm not willing to risk it.

i thought LMU was talking about doing some sort of large animal only track, a 6 year "abbreviated" program, and farming students out to the surrounding local vets for clinicals?

Which is why I said just say no.

They are all about the money, not the education.

Good Lord, 6 years?! Does that include a bachelors degree as well as DVM?

Oh ok haha Makes more sense!

Ahh that's crazy! I'd honestly be really nervous going to a super new school and I wonder if Midwestern/the others if they open will get many applicants.

👍👍👍👍

Wouldn't go there if it was the last vet school on earth -- seriously disgusting, for-profit educational program.

Okay, I don't know how Is stumbled upon this thread, but seriously? I have no idea about how this program is going to work, but LMU is not for-profit. Don't start this rumor going around.

Seriously? !

The school is disgusting..They charge ridiculous amounts in tuition have been proven to have lied about job placement (law school anyone? ), and we all know that another vet school, especially in Tennessee, isn't needed.

Dude. Slow down. All I said is we're not for profit. And ridiculous amounts of tuition? We're one of the cheapest private medical schools in the south. Just because the law school screwed up (which seriously, look up how many law schools lie about job placement, it's just part of them), doesn't mean every college in the university is bad. I understand your hesitation. But straight up bashing something you know nothing about is not called for.

Oh and as far as the additional vet school, thing. I agree with you on that note. I just don't want irrational rumors spreading.

You should calm down as well. Regardless of the fact that you attend their medical school, I'm almost certain most of us in this forum know more about veterinary schools than you do. LMU may not be a for-profit institution, but it is a private institution that appears to make most of its money by charging ludicrously high tuition. This may all be well and good if you plan on being a human doctor who will make over 6 figures after finishing school, but the reality for those of us who are becoming veterinarians is that it is a terrible idea to spend that much money on your education. Furthermore, the school is lying about there being a shortage of veterinarians which is disgusting. Most of us here have very strong feelings about why the number of veterinary graduates in the United States needs to be limited, not expanded.

Okay, okay. Look, I'm sorry to ruffle feathers in your field. I seriously mean no disrespect and I know all of you obviously know more about vet schools than I do. I'm coming in here to refute that LMU should have a vet school or not, I don't think they should either. But I will defend ridiculous things like a for profit status. That's all I was here to say. No need for outright attacking human doctors all together. I certainly wasn't attacking the veterinary profession.

That should say not coming here to refute it.

Nobody attacked anything about human doctors or human medicine. Foxhunter stated a truth... human doctors will make 6 figures per year or more when they are through with school, the vast majority of veterinarians will not. It wasn't an attack, it was a statement of facts.

And you can defend something that isn't true without getting snippy about it. You may not have even meant the first post as snippy, but it did come across that way. Tone is easily lost over the internet.

I agree, it wasn't supposed to be and I apologize that it came across that way. Again, all I wanted to say was that we're not for profit. That's all. I'm sorry I went off topic. I have no right or stake in anything else.

Sorry to jump on you, and definitely didn't intend to attack human doctors.

I think the disconnect here was taking "for profit" literally. They may not have that exact designated status, but their tuition along with other factors certainly makes it appear so.

Sort of like calling someone a backstabber. They don't actually stab people in the back, but they may well be huge douchenozzles 😉

Yeah, it was. I'm sorry about that. I can certainly see how it seems that way especially in respect to veterinary schools. Sorry, guys. I need more coffee this morning.
