LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hmm that doesnt seem very diverse.... i like when schools mirror the demographics of the region it is located (TN)
Would you prefer there be a higher white population? Because the '05 population for TN is at 82%. IMO, the school is pretty diversified, given the region and newness of the school.

But to each their own. 🙂

"minorities" account for 7.5% of the student body according to the stats that are posted

"minorities" account for 7.5% of the student body according to the stats that are posted
Or 28% if you make the assumption that the school's stats are based on 100% and there is 20.5% unaccounted for within that stats list.

I wanted to thank everyone for their advice and support. Especially a few of you who I've shared some pm's with (you know who you are). All of the help has really meant a lot to me!

I was also accepted on Monday. Dean Stowers called and spoke to my husband while I was at work. So, I will be seeing you all next fall!

Thanks again to everyone for the help and support, it has meant so very much to me. I can't wait to see you all next year!:soexcited:
CONGRATUFREAKINLATIONS!! To get pulled off the waitlist so early is quite the compliment in my opinion! We are going to have a class full of DCOM cheerleaders next year and I think that will make for a very successful class!

The more I hear about LMU, the more I think it could be the place for me. January 11th can't come soon enough!!
Harvest that excitement. Seriously, get yourself so excited that you can't stand it anymore. Hands down I think that's what got me in.

While I loved alot of things about DCOM; the vibe of the students and talking to several of you on here amongst them. You guys are awesome! However, this school was not a fit for me given my background. I just today got the call from VCOM. So happy. I knew it was just a better fit for me when I was there. I am putting down my money to them....and actually I will probably cancel my NYCOM interview (need to tell the savages on the NYCOM page as I am sure one of them would gladly take my inteview spot). Unless I hear from the Puerto Rican Schools....or University of Kansas (where I did my Ph.D).....VCOM is where I will go. God put me in a good position.

Thanks again to all of you here....we had alot of fun. I only wish I had the pleasure of being Grace's fellow student. 🙂 She is so amusing.

Much love

Jedi
Congrats on VCOM! I'm happy to hear you feel it's the best fit for you in the end. The best fit will yield the best results I'm sure. And just think of it this way- we will be pseudo classmates. Same end result, just a state away!

Also,I would like to add:
I can't remember exactly but last year around ~250 were accepted and 150 attended LMU, so we really don't know how many of that 100 were minority or not. Also, it also depends on how many minority student applies to the school.
There are schools that have 45% minority others have 4%. But maybe numbers are not always that good indicators about diversity since it depends on many other factors.

In my opinion diversity is not only about skin color, but different experiences.
I am white but I am from Europe,so I count it as diverse.

I am sure no matter what minority group you belong you will be more than welcome here dendrites!!!

To everyone who's been interviewed: Can you plz tell me how you commuted back and forth from airport -> school?

Thanks Grace! I was so happy to read that you had gotten accepted too! I can't wait for next year. I agree, I think we'll have an awesome class as well. Of course after meeting, and getting to know some of the current students via SDN, I bet each class is pretty darn awesome!

Anyway, I can't wait to meet you, and grats again to you too! :woot:

Mota,
A little late....but here it is anyway!!!!

Congrats!!! Looks like it is going to be a great christmas this year for many of us!! I am very happy for you! look forward to meeting you in the Fall. 🙂

Thank you so much. I'm really excited and can't wait to meet all of my classmates too, especially the SDN folks!

This school is awesome and is in a beautiful area. I wish everyone luck...I withdrew my acceptance yesterday. One more spot open!

I'm quite interested in rural healthcare. Could someone tell me if DCOM emphasizes this in their curriculum and rotations?

I'm quite interested in rural healthcare. Could someone tell me if DCOM emphasizes this in their curriculum and rotations?

Rotations? Definitely. Fourth year rotations include 8 weeks at community hospitals, which are all in rural areas. It also has a 4 week rural primary care (FM or IM).

Curriculum? Not so much as far as I can tell based on the schedule. If I'm wrong on that, someone please correct me.

I'm quite interested in rural healthcare. Could someone tell me if DCOM emphasizes this in their curriculum and rotations?

Curriculum: Early on FMHC (Foundations of Modern Healthcare) includes some guest lecturers about various topics. One was about Appalachian culture. She made the point to say that Appalachia isn't all rural. But we did address trust and access to care in the course. EPC (Essentials of Patient Care), which goes through all four semesters, includes doing a history and physical examination of standardized patients. They're local people, but the things you screen for (hypertension, smoking, etc.) are not uniquely rural problems. I don't know what emphasis the systems courses will place on rural healthcare, but overall, the emphasis is on the body, which is what you need no matter where you go. Though OPP will be a great tool for rural healthcare.

Rotations: You shouldn't have any trouble getting a core site in a rural area. That's what I intend to do, and that's where the real rural emphasis can be taken care of. Like anything else in medicine, you need to learn rural healthcare through practice. Additional opportunities to build on this come in the 4th year, with a rural primary care (FM or IM) rotation and two rotations (4 weeks each, back to back) at community hospitals, where you have to take care of everything yourself because there's no one else upstairs to dump patients on. Treat and release, choose to admit them, or transport them to another facility. But even a transport has to be stabilized first.

Just got the call from Dean Stowers...what a great feeling! BTW, I interviewed on 14 Dec.

Interviewed on 12/15 and accepted today. Got a call from Dr Stowers. God is great 😀

I had a missed call from a 423 number. I tried to call them back, and now my cell phone doesn't work. I tried to call admissions to no answer. Any call is a good call, yes?

12/15. I see you did as well. Congrats, friend. I'm Jon from Kentucky if you remember the name/face. Which person were you, if you don't mind my nosiness? Just trying to get a feel for who I'll be up there with.

got my acceptance call today as well, not sure if I will be going here though, WVSOM and LECOM impressed me a bit more, congrats to everyone!

Congrats to the new acceptances!!!

He usually tries to leave a voicemail. You didn't have a vm? I'd say any call is a good call b/c they don't call you to tell you you're waitlisted or rejected.

When I switched phones, AT&T wouldn't let me set it up on the new phone unless I had "the password." I've never found/figured it out.

Did you just transfer SIM cards? You can dial your phone number and it'll give you any vms you have.

I went from an Iphone to a non-smart phone type, and they ended up giving me a new sim. For whatever reason, I've never been able to set up/receive voicemail. If you call my phone, it says I haven't set up voice mail.

On another note, what are housing options down there? They took us on a tour of University Inn apartments, and we saw a 1 room. It really felt like a dorm room, and I wasn't a huge fan. Anything where you can get a few roomates and pay for a place with more of a living room/kitchen/bedrooms type set up?

Also, is there a gym available on campus? I really like to play basketball to destress, is there somewhere on campus with indoor courts available? Or even somewhere in town? Campus inn had a nice weight room, but really only an outdoor court--makes it harder to play in winter time.

There are definitely other options for housing. Several places to rent in Harrogate, Cumberland Gap, or Middlesboro. It really shouldn't be hard for you to find something- Especially with the 2012ers leaving in May/June. I'm not sure about the indoor courts, I know that some students have had problems having gym access on campus due to their unusual hours, but even if you don't live in the student apartments, you can pay on a semester or yearly basis to use the gym there if you would just like to work out. There's also a gym in Middlesboro for a decent price (though it does have odd hours).

I don't want to turn this into a real estate site, but what about availability of larger houses? I'm married w/4 kids. What's my best bet...Middlesboro?

Can someone who was accepted explain how they paid their deposit and how they knew exactly when to start the 30 days we have to reply? Thankssss

I sent a check in the mail via USPS Express mail with Delivery Confirmation. I believe the 30 days starts the day that the admissions committee accepts you. If you have any doubts you can always call.

Do you know if the school accepts credit cards over the phone? The admissions office is closed until Jan 4th so I won't be able to call until then. Thanks! 🙂

I would highly doubt it if they did. They did not mention a credit card option at my interview. I believe the only way to send them your money is check or money order.

probably 30 days after the letter is dated

Happy holidays everyone!

I did call them and asked last month. They told me that they DO NOT accept credit cards, only checks and money orders.
The 30 days is from the day the admission and Dean Stowers signed your acceptance letter.

I remember Janette saying for sure that the 30 days starts on the day that you receive your letter and have it in your hands, just to make it fair to those that may live farther away. Hope that helps 🙂

Well, I've been without power since last Friday thanks to this Winter storm that wreaked havoc on eastern TN and western VA. I just got it back late last night so I wanted to get on here and tell everyone Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone enjoys the time with family and increasing their risk of heart disease by eating two dozen sausage balls like me!!! 🙂

Just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a Merry Christmas...and have a safe and festive New Year!
I agree with CopToEM.....endulge yourselves just a little for the next few days! 🙂

Finally, got the courage to sign up to this site. I got my interview a bit back scheduled for Jan. 12 2010.

ANY others scheduled that day. I really don't want to get my hopes up because I have the worst of luck when it comes to important things, but I will hope for the best.

ALSO what is the average time most people waited to get a response back about acceptance after they interviewed. Hope to start making friends now so if I do get accepted I won't feel like an odd ball. I never have any luck making friends till like two years in. Same thing happened in high school and undergrad.

Till Next Time I Post.

Peace, Love, & Respect

Anyone else interviewing on Jan. 12, 2010? Also is tere a thread about interview questions at LMU? When it comes to online forums posting, chatting, hell even searching on forums I am an idiot. So please ny help interview wise is greatly appreciated also any new friends is greatly appreciated.🙂

Peace, Love, & Respect

First, I wanted to wish everyone a late, but merry Christmas! I hope everyone was able to enjoy some quality time with their loved ones.

As far as LMU feedback, it's in the feedback section! 😉

The above link should (if I did it correctly) take you to that page. Good luck on your interview!

Thanks, both AACOMAS and DCOM said 30 days from the day you get the letter, but how do they know exactly what day you got the letter? I am waiting on another school so the exact day is very important to me. THANKS!

They guestimate based on how far you are from the school and postal delivery times.

Can a current student tell me how much SDL/PBL stuff is in the curriculum? I know that you meet in small groups after block exams to go over them. Thanks!

Hey everyone- I was accepted here on Monday and I really like this school. Very impressive. My only thing was- it seemed like all the students I talked to went to class and then studied all the time... I mean don't get me wrong I know med school is no walk in the park, but I want a chance to breathe and have some free time. Anyone else get that feeling here? Maybe it was just the small group of students I talked to...

No, it's pretty universal. You get used to it....or you leave...it's medical school after all...

Happy holidays everyone!! Congrats on all the new acceptances 👍

I am anxiously awaiting to hear back from Janette about how to take care of this huge deposit, though I'm sure she's on holiday break and not exactly wanting to worry herself with work things. 🙂 I have no idea how I'm going to pay this thing with the current bills I have and no loan money anywhere in the near future. Will they take fairly small but consistent payments each month if your finances really don't allow you to make big payments, do you think?

I was wondering this too. My husband lost his job in August and things are extremely tight. Also, do they recommend coming to school with 2 months of expenses put aside before funding is dispersed?

she let me split up the payments into 2 separate deposits within 30 days of each other
