LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Irishfan and Athens:
Congratulations!

Now that the process is over, what do you feel helped you gain acceptance the most? What would you have done differently? What advice would you give to those still waiting to interview?

We certainly want to help those who are still awaiting interviews to have the best information possible!
Honestly, I think my rural health background and coming from a small town in MS put me over the top. I probably would have applied sooner if I could do it over, but it turned out how I wanted in the end right? Don't be nervous for the interview!! I was a little jittery til we got going.

Thanks for the congrats...see you in the fall!

Did you ever find out if the acceptance was contingent on completing your Master's? I'm kinda in the same boat as you and wouldn't mind saving that tuition money if I could.

Call Janette, explain your situation. The admissions office is pretty understanding of circumstances that would legitimately warrant you terminating your grad studies, as long as you've completed pre-med requirements.

Just got a call from LMU-DCOM about an interview! I'm going to interview next Tuesday, Jan. 26. Anybody else interviewing that day?

Does anyone have any tips for the interview?

My file was completed in early Nov and I have not heard from that. How long does it take to hear from them for an interview? I am getting worried. What's the MCAT/GPA range? Thanks.

My file was complete in mid November I think. From the time I sent in my secondary to being offered an interview wasn't long...maybe 5 days. Have you tried following up with them?

Can I ask when your file was complete. I just received an email this morning saying my file was complete and I'm wondering the turnaround time.

Irishfan-
I bumped up a pre-osteo thread about the WCU post-bacc. Is that the program you are hoping not to finish this year? If so, that student is looking for info from someone in the program!

Quick question guys. I'm taking my MCAT on the 29th of this month and the tentative score release date is March 2nd. I was wondering if DCOM has ever offered an interview to a student late in March?

Yes they accept students through even the beginning of april if i remember correctly. Of course it is extremely competitive by that point. The thing to remember, though, is that students shuffle around all spring and summer so many students are accepted even up to the first day of classes! It sucks to interview and get waitlisted, knowing if you had interviewed earlier, that might not have been the case (this is my story!), but you just might be one of the lucky few that gets off that list this year!

Yea, I called them about couple of weeks ago. They said under review. I wonder if it would mean rejection. Do you know MCAT score for those accepted/interview? Do they prefer instate? Thanks.

That certainly seems abnormal to hear nothing one way or another. I'd certainly give them a follow-up call asap.

Their range for accepted scores/GPAs is reallllly wide from what I've picked up on so far, so unless you have low stats on both, I doubt that's it. Also, while they attract lots of TN applicants, there are really people accepted from all over the US. Did something else maybe stand out in your app as a red flag? How are your e.c. activities/community efforts/clinical experience? How about your personal statement? An even bigger question- are other schools taking an interest in your application?

I know you! 😉 Be yourself, show them your passion for medicine, I know you will do great!

Any Current Students have advice as to what books are actually NEEDED, or a study material that really helped?

That is extremely late to just get a score. I would imagine you'd you have better luck prepping and applying early for next year. I would say "highly doubtful" on getting an interview at that point.

I would say hold off on most of them until you get here and then ask a newly minted OMS-II about what they used. Since the curriculum is still being tweaked it's possible what I used and what the current OMS-II's used will be different from what you will use.

Hi, electric DO,

I received an email 1 hour before they called me about an interview. However, I did call them on Monday to ask, and they said my file was complete on Friday. So, it's possible that you'll hear something by next Monday or Tuesday.

So, my wife is coming with me for my interview next Tuesday to scope out middle/high school teaching jobs and housing. We'd really like to rent a house, but an apartment would work just fine, too. Could someone give us some recommendations for housing?

Thanks everyone. I will give them a call in the morning again. Do you know how long is the review process take place?

My application was complete on Friday, Jan. 15, and they called me today; so, I'd say that it takes just a few days for them to review the application at this point.

wow.. that was pretty quick I suppose compared to mine. I got an email from them in early Nov that my application is complete. I am very concerned now. If they won't give for an interview, do they send out rejection right away or wait until the end of application cycle? How many students do they accept each year and how many spaces are left at the point? Does anyone know?

Well, I'm unsure about your questions; but, I think you should know that I am from rural West TN, and from what I read, they give preference to those from the rural parts of TN. So, that may have had something to do with them replying so quickly.

Yes, be sure to call them in the morning.

We were told during our interview session they end up accepting abt 160, and that they had 50 firm acceptances. That was before our group got acceptances and doesn't factor in offers they'd made to people that were still debating. Hope that helps!

Wow...50 firm acceptances sounds really low...especially for January. I am a little surprised.

I thought so too. It's entirely possible I misheard and she said there 50 available spots. Everything kinda became a blur once Dr. Stowers called.

I got accepted on Tues Jan 19, 2010. One load of my chest. T

The thing I say is just go in and be yourself iot is very relaxed. Everyone is like super enthusiastic and nice. It is a very family oriented campus so don't be afraid to ask questions or whatever you want. If you want to know anything about me or my journey to LMU-DCOM then just hit me up with a pm or message here

And Congratulations to everyone!

Thank you!

Has everyone gotten their initial matriculation paperwork via email? My came 2 days ago? Makes it even more a reality.

Yeah, I got mine a few days ago too! I've already called to make an appointment for a physical and to get started on the vaccinations.

As a note to everyone--the vaccinations sound like they take some time (they have to be spread out) so it's probably a good idea to get started on them soon.

Yep, mine came 2 days ago as well. The thing is that I was trying to call Mary K. Bowen-Reynolds to ask some questions but wasn't able to reach her.

I don't have insurance right now and it'll be difficult to get those paper work done. I was wondering if they allow us to buy the school insurance early.

I just called my local health department. They were able to take care of some of it for a very small fee and the stuff they couldn't do they were able to direct me to someone who could for a reasonable cost.

New to SDN. I just received my letter from DCOM and I have been placed on the alternative list. Any suggestions on how to become accepted. I really, really love the school!!

i remember them saying that they leave a certain number of spots open for later applicants so that they dont give away all the spots at the beginning and miss out on someone exceptional that submitted their application later

👍 Definitely check at your local Health Dept to begin these required vaccinations. Generally speaking, most health department's offer services based on on a sliding income scale and if you're like a majority of college students you'll fall at the lower end of it.

Additionally, if you live in a rural area and tell the H.D. you're an accepted med student and needing them for school they may be able to round up some grant money to help you out.

Just my .02 for what it's worth! 🙂

You can try doing a letter of interest.

What does this consist of? Sorry I am a non-traditional and this whole process is extremely foreign to me...

I would suggest doing a search of the SDN site to get a more comprehensive view of what others have included in theirs, but at the very least it should express things such as...why specifically you want to go to DCOM (e.g. the rural hospital rotation is a neat idea, and would be a great capstone and preparation for your hopes to set up a medical home in your hometown)...what you've been doing to keep working toward the goal of matriculating at DCOM (additional volunteering/positions of leadership/coursework/MCAT)...that sort of thing

Also, never underestimate the importance of thank you notes/emails to your interviewers. I'd be willing to bet there are a couple docs who might go to bat for an interviewee they particularly liked and has shown continued interest after the interview.

The school insurance won't be available until orientation, but will be retroactive to the first day of that month (confusing, I know). Personally I didn't have my hepatitis series done and was able to put it off until I had school insurance without repercussions. If money is an issue get in touch with Amy or Jody and I'm sure something can be worked out, and possibly see if a doc in your town would be willing to cut you a break if you explained the physical was to start medical school🙄.

I second what has been said here. Call the school and explain the situation and see if there are some things that can wait until after your insurance kicks in.

Thank you so much! I will call my former Doctor and ask her to help me out and call the ladies at LMU for advice about the Tetanus shot 'cause mine doesn't expire until March 2011.

If you know where you got your tetanus shot, you can get the paperwork showing the date. As long as you're current, I don't think you have to get a new one.

I believe if it expires before or while you are doing clinical rotations, you will need to have a new one (at least that's what they told me), but you should probably be able to hold this off til school starts and just get it in the clinic here.

Yep-you're right.
