LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No.

Do yourself a favor, and enjoy your summer. Regardless of what you do there's no possible way that you can prepare yourself for the depth and speed of the curriculum. I'm not trying to be a butthole, but seriously: ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME. Two years from now when you're reading 18 hours a day pulling your hair out about tests and sim labs and COMLEX and this, that and the other you'll wish you had not tried to get a leg up when you could have been at a BBQ or on a beach. Plus, to cap it all off there's a chance you'll spend a week trying to learn something that isn't emphasized anyway. Everyone more or less starts from the same spot on day one, and it goes (relatively) slow enough for people who have been out of school for a year or two to get back into the swing of things.

I apologize if this comes across wrong, but spend time with your family and loved ones because once school starts in the fall the opportunities to spend time with your family (devoid of school distractions) is increasingly scarce.

I am not talking about serious, hard core studying. I am talking about simply studying for a couple of hours before I go to bed a couple of nights a week. Nothing too in depth. Just basic concepts. Just enough to where I know that I won't be overwhelmed. It's good to hear that they start off relatively slow. Your post does not come across wrong. I completely understand where you are coming from.

I got First Aid, and Netter's Anatomy I heard this is the best.

I read First Aid here and there, not studying, but very interesting. Some i remember from undergrad, most r new, at the end there are pics, it reassured me how lucky I am, and all those diseases are pretty depressing.
I don't do much with Netter just looking at pictures, I never had Anatomy so it little bit worries me.

I really don't look forward to biochem. :barf:

Also, if you want to learn in a fun way and of course if you have an iphone or itouch they have great anatomy apps/games that are very good. So you can learn on a fun way.

If you study you might forget it, so just read to get familiar with some material.

That's all I want to do is get familiar with some material before i get there. I want to put off any hard core studying as long as I can.

congrats Hotnachos! If I were a betting man...I'd wager you will love the school once you visit! I know I did. Good luck.

Does anyone get an interview for Feb? How late do they give out interviews?

Does anyone get an interview for Feb? How late do they give out interviews?

They interview through about the 3rd week of April, they told us this week. I had my interview on Tuesday 1/26 and they said that they were just under half filled for the next class (they plan for 162). I love this school and am hopeful that the interview went super for me. One of the nice things is that there are few distractions here so you have to focus on your studies. I really need that. Everyone in the area is super friendly and you will love Bob the guy who gives the campus tour! The admissions office staff has been a blessing!!!!

It's great to know. I still have some hope. Did they call you or email you for an interview? I was told that my application would be looked at it again and could not tell me when. Good luck!!

Is the Grading A/B/C or Pass/Fail?

And I think someone said no class rankings/honors? It's been a while though

It's A/B/C. No plus/minus. There are also letter grades for rotations.

Apparently class rankings come out at the beginning of the second year.

No amount of studying on your part prior to getting to the school will keep you from feeling overwhelmed. I honestly think that's impossible. Just enjoy your time off now. I think you'll just regret it later, AND find that it was pointless....

I'm making a decision on where to go, so I'd like someone to comment on these factors:
Are you limited on where you can do your residency?
How well do you think DCOM is preparing you for the profession?

Feel free, but I stand by it. I don't want to generalize but pretty much every single person have an idea what field they might have an interest in. Every pre-med student I talked to have a plan. It could change, I am not saying it won't , but every pre-med student exposed to medicine through work/volunteering/shadowing, etc...and all I met knew what they wanted which was surprising to me, but they did.
I don't have an exact plan but I know what I am interested in and what not so much, it could change when I am actually there and doing it, but I know for sure I won't be an OB/GYN.

What I recommended is if they have a plan put it in to LOI, and how LMU would help accomplish it. They know nothing is written in stone.

My group was told by a faculty member tired of hearing all the students say they want to do FM in a rural area, and can't tell him really why.
So, I thought I put it out there for future interview candidates.
I understand what you're saying. And definitely don't think people should put FM in rural areas without a good reason. And thinking that's what the school wants to hear is NOT valid. Yes, people do have an idea of what they are leaning towards and away from but writing a letter about how you want to be ortho and DCOM can help you get there because of whatever reason paints you as naive unless you have a damned good rock solid reason and background for saying ortho (or whatever specialty you choose).

Too many students get hung up on being EM or surgery or rads and don't keep an open mind through rotations. By the time they get to their 'chosen' field, they've eliminated all other choices because they're deadset on a certain specialty. Only to get to that rotation and hate it. Then what? You have a limited chance to re-experience rotations if you make them your electives.

Including a specialty and how DCOM can help might work for some. But it will work for those who have a solid history with the chosen specialty and can prove they've spent ample time experiencing it to know a little of what it might entail as a physician.

Also, if you want to learn in a fun way and of course if you have an iphone or itouch they have great anatomy apps/games that are very good. So you can learn on a fun way.
Don't know if this was included in the apps you mentioned, but Netter's has the flashcards for the iPhone/Touch. Super handy!

You can do your residency anywhere you want, granted you pass all your boards.

I would choose DCOM over any school if I had to it over. From what we have heard about last years class, DCOM students are outperforming most other 3rd year students and some 4th year students while some have even been compared to have training comparable to a first year resident. I think DCOM is taking a new approach to medical education and I have no doubt that I will be prepared to be a great doctor.

Pretty much decided that I'm coming to LMU as long as I can find off-campus housing.

Can anyone give me suggestions on where to look? I've looked over the dcomdo site, the middlesborodaily, and just google in general. I can't seem to find much in Harrogate, but I know there are apartments.

Also, does anyone know when the new book list will be posted? Or can I find the latest editions of the titles from older lists?

Thanks!

Thanks HopefulDoc1984. I have another question: Would it be hard for me to get residency in the Northeast if I go to DCOM? And when will DCOM get accredited?

Check out DCOM DO (the student run website) here http://www.dcomdo.com/#login and if you're ever up here you can drive around, ask the locals and check out your housing options.

Also, I live in some pretty nice apartments (they were new when we moved in) and everyone in my building will be moving out in June. There are 4 units in the building, all are 2 bedroom 2 bathroom with W/D hookups, dishwasher, pretty nice. PM me for more info if you're interested or want to come look at them.

Good Luck 😀

no, it wouldn't. COMLEX 1&2 scores and rotation grades (3rd &4th years) will decide where you go.

DCOM will get accredited before class 2011 graduates.

I lived in these apts: http://www.ballrealty.com/ and I thought it was a fair price. I'd recommend them.

Thanks prions and npemtiv!

Any thoughts on how safe these areas are and whether all utilities are included?

How are these places with allowing pets?

Has anyone that interviewed on Tuesday, Jan 26th, heard anything yet by chance? Waiting on pins and needles here!!

It's cheaper to live in an apartment or share a house. The University Inn and the Mars Apartments both have everything taken care of for you, though, so you don't have to worry about monthly utilities or rent. But there are two classes there, so you might have some people partying outside on a weekend when you've got a test coming on Monday.

Sorry that this is my first post on the DCOM forum, I have kinda just been a creeper up until now. Just wanted to share my great news with everyone who knows how hard the journey to medical school can be. I received the call today around 3:30 (central time)....:soexcited: I AM IN!!
I love DCOM..😍..the students, faculty, staff, setting, technology, and everything else. I hope to see ya'll this fall!

Yes, I'm pretty sure I'll accept. Who exactly are you?? Are you planning on accepting your seat?

I thought it was you!! It was wonderful meeting you, too! Well, she's not found anything yet. She's going to go ahead and apply for her Kentucky license just in case. She's also going to send her resume to the schools surrounding LMU. Of course, it's the middle of the year, so the schools won't know anything until later, and from what I understand, schools don't notify that they have an opening until a few weeks before class starts (in most cases).

Thanks, vols!

Hi everyone. Sorry to post late, but had to work tonight. I got my call at 2:36 AZ time and scared half the people in the tutoring center to death! Definitely accepting! Now just have to find the wife a teaching job, the KY license application is ready to go out. We are thinking about looking a little farther north in London. Although it is a longer drive, it is the same drive I would have made here in AZ to attend AZCOM if I had gotten in. Plus, London is right between DCOM and Lexington, in case she decides to start her PhD. It was great to meet all of you on the 26th! I heard that they really the group that day and I am anxious to see who from that group got accepted! :soexcited:

Congrats csquared, Tinman85225 and jnutt!!!!!! I can't wait to meet you all in the the end of July. Only less than 6 more months! yay.

Congrats Jnutt, Tinman and Csquared! Look forward to meeting you all in the fall. 😀
Tinman and Csquared, my wife is a teacher in the Knox county school system. I know one of you said they would be looking into Kentucky but I thought I would give you names of the larger school districts in the area south of LMU. You all could look into Oak Ridge school system (best pay around) Anderson county schools, Knox county school. these are the larger of the school systems in the area with Knox probably being the biggest. There are many others and you can PM me if you need any other help.

Congrats again.🙂

Congrats all. Accepted yesterday as well, interviewed on 1/26. It was great to meet all of you. I was the one from Long Island, NY.

Was this Josh, the EMT from NY? Congrats regardless.

Hi Fltmedeic. Thanks for the info. My wife is liking KY a little more because she has her national board certification and KY offers extra money for that. However, we are looking everywhere. She is also talking about doing her TN license just to be safe. I am so excited to be coming up there, although the family is giving me grief about having to get used to walking around barefoot. I keep telling them that that may be the case now, but when I am finished, they need to be careful about I will be able to do. All in good fun! The hardest part is over, now let the fun begin!!!

Tinman-
Tell you wife and Kids that most of the transplants that I know from AZ love it here. We have several from Scottdale that have moved here and work for my Fire Dept. Once they get here and realize we have running water, TV and phones they love it! ( tell them we have mens and womens outhouses now!) I read your MD profile and we have alot in common...aside from being more distinguished....(older)..lol😀
Gongrats again and look forward to meeting everyone in late July!

Thanks Tinman and csquared. Yes, EMT from NY. I read through this thread before my first post, so I know who both of you are from the interview. I wonder who else from our group will be attending. Again, congrats.

Where I lived water was included, but with everything being considered I was out something around $550 a month. I can't remember now if that was with or without cable....I cancelled it second year since I never had time to watch it. But that's about what I paid.

The entire area is safe no matter where you live. I always joked that you're more likely for someone to notice your keys in your car and lock it up for you then to steal it...

My biggest piece of advice is get a desk that has enough space to spread out several books and your laptop...the rest of the apartment will be infrequently visited... 🙄

Fltmedic, I love it! Actually, a friend of mine from high school is one of the OMM fellows this year and will start her third year next year. She loves it! I know I will too, as I used to live in NW Indiana growing up so I am ready for it! Can't wait until July and things get rolling!

Is anyone planning to take the USMLE (sp?) for allopathic residencies?
