LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys,

I'm a third year at LMU-DCOM and I just wanted to give you all some advice based on things I have heard from the admissions office. Please DO NOT call them 3-4 times a week checking on your application. Especially when they are telling you not to call so much. When they say everything is fine and they will let you know if they need anything from you they mean it. When you call 3 to 4 times a week you annoy them and I can assure you that does NOT work in your favor for admission to C/O 2014. Oh yea if you are doing this and asking for different people each time you call, like Janette one time or Robin and then Amy...they sit 10 feet from each other and do talk...this tactic is not working. I promise you...you are annoying them.

I remember sitting where you all are now and wanting to make sure everything is received in a timely manner and that your application is as up to date with the school as possible. That all works in your favor for admission BUT if you are being so eager that you are calling too much this will trash all the work you put in making your application look good. My suggestion to you is to relax...submit your material and wait! They are very capable people and will get your folders together as soon as they can. If you feel the need to call and check on your status, every few weeks is the absolute soonest you should call. If anyone has questions about this please PM me and I'll be happy to help. This is not meant to scold just to inform and hopefully give the ladies in admissions a bit of a break...they are awesome and deserve all our cooperation and respect!

Thanks and good luck!!!

Good luck to all who apply. I interviewed at DCOM last year with no luck. The school is great. Hope to meet some of you on interview day, again. 😀

What do you think was your obstacle the first time through? Looking to learn from you! 😳

Thanks!

Interview invite a few minutes ago...Monday Oct. 12. Hope to meet some of you there.

I also thought she said Lincoln Memorial University - The Best College of Osteopathic medicine. Very amusing.

If ya'll need me to translate for you'ns I can. 😀
When she called me I understood her perfectly....but then again I speak her language. I only live about 40 miles from DCOM. lol

Oct. 12 also. good luck!:xf:

lol, i was at work when she called. secretly listened to the voice message and I swear I heard the best college also 😀

For the secondary, did u guys print out the form and hand written ur info or just filled it on the computer?
I feel that the font wasn't that big and there's not enough space for me to fill in my job titles with the small area & line that they provided.

I have interview invite for October 6 :meanie:.

Who wants to share a ride to school from airport? 😀

I have an interview the same day. According to my email, they will be interviewing at either 1000, 1030, or 1100 am. I am assuming that means there will only be three of us that day. Good Luck to you. Will you be doing the diner thing the night before?

There will be about 12 people interview, so during the time you are not interviewing, you guys will be able to chat amongest yourselves

I think I will have to arrive late by looking on the plane schedule from my location. I have a friend attending LMU-DCOM so I try to see him that day if it would be possible. What's the best website to find cheapest tickets? How much discount for that hotel near school do students get when they mention LMU-DCOM.

I would like to know why so many people are interested in LMU-DCOM. What stands out so much for this school? Why are the facilities so attracting? When I looked up the map for it, it seemed like they only had one real building dedicated to the medical school

My wife booked me at the holiday inn last night. I think she said 65.00 down from 85.00. I will be driving up. I live about 3 hours south of the campus.

I visited the campus today. Looks good. Looks like one building is dedicated for the medical school....but still looks promising and it is a beautiful area. I just hope you guys are ready to live in the backwoods. There is a walmart and ingles about 10 miles from campus......but that's about it.

Wouldn't have it any other way! You have to be willing to live in a rural area. If not, it's not really worth the time and money spent. But you can always give us a visit to see what you think of the place.

Holy mackerel! Interview season already?? Seriously? I remember being in your very shoes last year and it was the most exciting time in my life until I got here (now this is... hehe)

To show you how closely knit our family is, we have 223 members in our DCOM 2013 facebook group... When last checked, some of the other COM's only had ~60. We're all family here and are super excited to have you guys join us! The best thing about this school is the fact that everyone is willing to help everyone else out. We won't leave a man or woman behind if at all possible.

Good luck to you all! If anyone needs a place to stay, send me a PM. I have a really nice sleeper sofa. 😉 .. and a futon, if you're a masochist.

As far as Oasis - totally!!!! I'll definitely do my best to be there when I have the time!

About it? A walmart and an ingles in the same town? Awesome

Can any current students or people from the area comment on the rental market. What would a small 2-3 bedroom house in a decent area cost? I cant find listings online. Every rental I can find in the area is a log cabin vacation home. How far from school do people usually have to live?

Hey check out the current students thread. There were a few suggestions on where to check for places. I would bet 600-700 giving the cost of living in the area.

2-3 br house, I can't quote you on.. prob around 700. ballrealty.com has some duplexes (currently full) that are 2br/2ba and are brand spanking new that are pretty awesome. They're um... 5-7 mins from school, tops.

I searched all over for houses that size.. and ~700 was the going rate.

heartland real estate also has a website, google it. They should have some listings there.. or will when it gets closer to time.

Hope that helps! Back to studying nerve roots 😉

I have been verified now for 2 weeks, and still have not received email notification about a secondary.

Do they send you an invite to fill it out, or do you have to pull it up yourself?

Does anyone have a link to secondary on their site?

I got an e-mail requesting that I submit the supplementary application. However, I believe all applicants receive a secondary and must send it in, rather than be screened and be sent the link. In the e-mail it said to disregard the message if I had already submitted the supplementary app.

So download it, complete it, and send it! 🙂

For the Part on the secondary that tells you to list the name of each person writing a letter. What if you have more than three that are writing letters for you? Should you just put the name of your pre med advisor that has the packet? what do you guys think

Does anyone know the stats on how many students were interviewed and then how many students were subsequently accepted during last years cycle. I am not having any luck finding any stats.

This is from a previous post---

For everyone intersted, here are the stats for the Class of 2012 at LMU-DCOM:

Number of AACOMAS applications: 2039

Number of applicants scheduled for an on-campus interview: 509 (24.96% of the AACOMAS applicant pool)

Number of applicants interviewed: 497 (24.37% of the AACOMAS applicant pool; 97.6% of interviews scheduled or 2.4% no-show rate)

Number of offers of admissions extended to applicants: 297 (14.6% of the AACOMAS applicant pool and 59.8% of those interviewed)

Number of those who were extended an offer of admission who also accepted the offer of admission/students in the class: 160 (53.9% of those who were offered admission)

Grade Point Averages:
Mean Cumulative GPA 3.38
Mean Non-Science GPA 3.5
Mean Science GPA 3.27

Mean MCAT Composite Total 24.4

I would bet big money that the average GPA and MCAT this year will be somewhat higher.

Does this school participate in VirtualEvals and or Interfolio for letters?

Unless it's changed from last year, you don't have to be invited to fill out a secondary. Go ahead and fill it out and send it in! 🙂

woohoo.. first osteopathic invite 🙂.. Interview on Oct. 19

LMU interview invite for 10/13!

I am going to try to be there on the 11th...anyone else from the 12th group planning on being there? Droog or fltmedic? It says it is casual and wont affect the interview but I dont want to show up in shorts and a t-shirt and look grubby.

Teacherman,
I am planning on being there on the 11th also. Thinking of bringing my wife also after reading the flyer. (We will be the old geezer couple..stick out like a sore thumb!)🙂

I got the interview invite this morning for Oct 13.

Congratulation to all of you who got intervew. We were in your shoes last year so we know how excited and nervous you are. Relax and you will do fine. If you guys have any question, feel free to ask. Oasis Pizza night is fun, and some of us will be there to chill with you guys.
Once again congratulation on your interviews. TXDO

Last years thread said it usually takes about two weeks. Give or take

last year mine took exactly 10 days post interview

10 days is not bad at all. I have my interview on October 19th and I feel like I am going to jump out of my skin I am so excited/nervous.

Hi guys, I just sent in my secondary yesterday through snail mail. I was wondering if I have a chance at LMU-DCOM ??????:xf:

MCAT: 23Q 8PS/6VR/9BS (my first was 19N) I didn't improve on VR.
cGPA: 3.29. sGPA: 3.22

EC:
Volunteer since high school (about 1000hrs)
Shadowed DO and MD
Been in US for 9 years (English as second language).
Medical interpreter right now.
Researched for 2 years and was Acknowledged on 1 published article.
Great story of my struggle getting to the U.S. (I was imprisoned in an immigrant camp for 7.5 yrs).

1 more thing, I met this DO while working as an interpreter and he told me that he has some friends who are basic science professors at LMU. Should I contact him and get to know his friends as well (like asking for the process and details about the school, etc.)? From experience last year, do you know Who do the interviewing??? Are the faculties involved as well? Will I have advantage if I had some connections? just wondering.....

I have a friend at LMU, class of 2013 who just started. His MCAT was a 21 with a verbal of 6 (not sure of the other two exactly). He is Hispanic and perhaps that status helped - who knows. His GPA science was about a 3.5.

You have a shot I'm sure. My opinion is that you should not try to suck up to the faculty. Sell yourself at the interview. Good luck

Good Luck!
