LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just out of curiosity... did the school ever provide a valid reason as to why they call some of the students, and not all of the ones they accept? It really makes no sense to me why they would show favoritism/preference like that.

Don't get me wrong... I'll take an acceptance in the mail and no phone call, over no acceptance at all, any day...

I was in the same interviewing group as "fiznat" and they did not give a reason why some are called and others are not. I can see how this can happen using the following scenario:

The admissions committee met today and tomorrow they start making phone calls. If they try and call me tomorrow morning; I will be gone from early morning to late afternoon. (I put my home phone # instead of my cell phone-I realized that on the way home.) I will have missed the call and they may not try to contact me by phone again. If they do not call again, then I will not know until I receive the e mail or snail mail telling me that I am accepted.

If it helps at all, when we interviewed on Tuesday they said that the class was just a little over half full. I don't think you need to worry that the class is going to fill up before you hear.

And hey, whats wrong with using the word 'tarnish??' 😉

I hope so man! They said they would definitely meet on Thurs, but no guarantee they will make calls today. They said it depended on whether Dean Stowers had time to do that part of the process... If we don't hear today I wouldn't worry, I think they average around 7-10 days to get back to applicants.

I was presenting a scenario using myself as an example. I am not expecting anything for at least 7 days

Hi everyone. I've just been stalking the discussion thread for a bit, but decided to say hello and good luck to you all!

I interviewed on Valentine's day. I absolutely fell in love with the school and its location (yes, I am a tad bit weary about the size of the town). Anyways, If I get in, hopefully some of you (as my new classmates) are avid trail runners because I'm going to need a running buddy or two!

If def seems like we are an athletic bunch, as there are already a couple of such conversations on the FB page.

Come join in the discussion! 🙂

I received my invite on valentines day and i'am sooo excited! I'll be interviewing on 2/28. Anyone else interviewing the same day?

Just got the call! ACCEPTED!!!!!! (I interviewed this past Tuesday, what an amazing turnaround!)

Congrats fiznat!

like many previous concerned applicants... would you mind sharing your gpa/mcat... and what you may believe have been the reason that the school was so quick to get back to you with an acceptance?

Thanks.

Hey I think I'm actually going to hold off on posting my complete stats until it is decided where I am going to attend. Basically though I have an above average MCAT, a below average GPA, and a significant amount of healthcare experience (8 years as a professional paramedic). Sorry I can't provide more detail, but I hope this helps.

I'm not quite sure why the school replied so quickly, I don't consider myself an "amazing" applicant by any standard. I think the school does occasionally call on the Friday after, which is what some of our tour guides attested to. I can't imagine I'm the only one that got a call....?

Valid reason? The dean does it himself as a favor to applicants and because he enjoys it. No one's promised a call, and if someone doesn't get one because he's busy, they have no right to complain.

Yeah, it's totally random. I do admit that it would be frustrating to not receive a call while others are talking about theirs.

Fiznat... that is fine that you don't want to disclose your informationl. I'm sure the 8 years of experience must have definitely been a plus. That information does help. I find that LMU appreciates the applicants with strong expereince in the field.

I personally am a recent graduate and do not have any professional experience and that may have played a factor in me not receiving a call yet.

Styria... I get the feeling that you are a student at LMU? Either way, in no way did I mean to disrespect the dean or the gesture in him calling students. I just find it odd that they would call some but not all... it would be a very nice feeling to be a student that received a call from the dean. More importantly I was just trying determine my situation and whether or not a lack of a phone call was bad sign.

Waiting is tough.

good luck you guys! i was a feb acceptance in a past cycle and had sent in my primary app late too, so i wanted to cheer you all on.

hang in there. consider that there's graduation, accreditation, and planning for the school's expansion that's keeping the admin busy right now, on top of the usual interview season activities. i would guess that if you do not get a call, it's simply because Doc's a little busy these days, and i believe the order in which students are called is random. i was in the middle of delivering a seminar presentation and he had to leave me a vm, but i was impressed that he did... wish i could have kept it!

School expansion?

🙁 ugh, on the dreaded waitlist I go. At least it wasnt a rejection. Im a bit dissapointed but I will keep trucking on. One things for sure, I am not giving up and If I don't get in, I will reapply for sure. Loved this school and the area a lot. So Hopefully some action comes my way soon. I wanted to say thanks for all the support from everyone on this thread. Congratulations to all those accepted, you earned it and kicked butt to get that acceptance letter.👍

Hey I was wondering 2 things if anybody could help me out.

1) Does LMU straight out reject people post interview?

2) When do they start looking at the waitlist? My assumption is when they have accepted more than their class size and people start dropping their spots to go to other schools. Does anyone know when they do or if they dont wait for that how their specific list works? Or is it just a completely random process. I would call the school and ask, but I have been in touch with them so much in the past and I don't want to be a pest. Don't worry I am an extremely proactive applicant, I just didnt want to seem annoying.

I'm sorry to hear that...don't give up hope though, I've heard people get accepted off the waitlist all the way through the first week of classes. Definitely send them a letter of intent, and keep them updated on any classes you are taking/ECs you are doing. Let them know how perfect they are for you, how much you like the area (I think this is a main reason people don't end up going), etc. DCOM in particular seems like they would take letters of intent very seriously, especially from people on the waitlist...since they obviously liked you enough not to reject you. I hope it works out!

I dunno, I sent them a Letter of Intent and then got an interview, so they definitly consider them very seriously but I don't know about sending another one. Thats actually the One thing I like most about the school is the location. I was actually worried that during my interview I would be asked "why DCOM" and sound like the only reason I liked the school was because I loved Harrogate so much. I understand that the facilities are top notch etc, but thats not what really gets you a good residency. I understand the facilities help you PERFORM better on rotations and therefore helps your chances at attaining a great residency, but in the long run thats not the most important factors. Even the faculty acknowledge that board scores, grades and rotations do that for you. And oh god, Dr. Kiick and Dr. Smith seemed like the coolest people. I would love to learn from them and they seemed extremely down to earth. I really loved the faculty and the students the most, they were all just awsome. Ugh ok now im getting carried on. I am going to be updating them for sure. I am registered for classes and am going to search for new extracurricular activites. I have, what I feel are great healthcare experiences but I havent been doing them for YEARS which seems DCOM tends to like in their applicants. We Will see what happens. Again, thanks for the support. I gave it my best in the interview and I know that, I wouldnt really change much, I was extremely honest. Maybe too much soo....

I dont know for sure if they reject people straight up after an interview, but i cant imagine why they wouldnt. There are a lot of people in our class with health industry experience, but the majority of us have none (me for instance). Last year they pulled 3-4 people off the waitlist the first week of classes, so you never know!

If that was me I wud rent the uhaul withing a minute of the phone call or letter and have it packed and be moved down there in 48 hours. I'm ready to go

The last thing my interview group was told that there would be one of three replies: Acceptance, rejection, and waitlist. As far as I remember, those rejected would be done so on the basis of not fitting in with the school's mission more than anything else.

I was told in both my interviews last week that since we have gotten this far, it is not a question on whether we can do the work but how well we fit in with the school

Hmm. So they didn't think I wud fit in? Damn I wonder what gave them that feeling? Who knows maybe I'm not but I will definitly be living in an area like harrogate in the future. Maybe not harrogate tn but a place very similar, that's for sure lol.

My comments applied to those rejected.

For example, if you said that you wanted to be a neurosurgeon in LA, then you would rejected because you did NOT fit in with LMU's mission to provide primary care doctors for Applachia.

I don't know about this. I told them I am interested in practicing emergency medicine in a busy urban area. They asked what I knew about rural medicine, and I said that I think it would be helpful to take rural, community values back with me to the urban environment. I actually expressed some surprise and anxiety over how rural the location turned out to be.

Before the interview I fought with myself over how honest I should be about that when those questions came up. I'm glad that I was, because it was more natural for me to have that conversation, and now I know that they are interested in who I am as an applicant. I think they are open to all different kinds of people, but I have no idea how they make their final decisions. I really feel lucky to have been accepted.

I was giving an example that may or may not be true. I know that they are open to different types but they still have their Primary Mission

I hope you have room on that wait-list couch, because I am sitting down beside you and a few others.:xf:

anyone know what the movement off the alternate list was like last year? They say that the list isn't ranked... do they actually re-review ALL the files when seats open up?

I got a phone call for an interview invite; unfortunately, office was closed by the time I checked my voice mail. Does anybody know how full the class is?
I'm already in at a great school but I do like LMU-DCOM and esp. the location (4hrs from where I am currently located). Anyone know if they are just interviewing for waitlist?

Some of the most recent interviewers were told about 50% full.

Does anyone remember when we are supposed to get the financial information packet?

I got mine the 21st of January. It said LMU-DCOM matriculation packet. I would check your spam folder...for some reason a lot of their e-mails have ended up in mine.

I think he/she is talking about the financial aid packet that is supposed to be mailed separately from the initial matriculation packet.

March 14th, ya'll. They were offering me tomorrow but seeming there's suppose to be storm heading towards GA, I'm not pushing it.

See you to those interviewing that day.

For those not accepted by phone call, how long did it take you to find out? And was first notification thru snail mail?

If not called, you will find out via snail mail. I received my letter the next week (on friday). I live fairly close, so the day you receive yours may vary. Best of luck!

I interviewed 2/15 and got the wait list letter on 2/24. It depends when you interviewed and when the admissions committee met.

So I have interviews next week that I would have to pay for plane tickets for. I interviewed here last week 2/22, and still have not heard anything. I was thinking about waiting till friday, and then calling to find out my status (if accepted, I could put money that was going to plane tickets toward deposit). Thoughts?

If you have not heard anything by Thursday night, then call Janette in the admissions office Friday. I am sure she will let you know where you stand at the present with LMU.

so is anybody that has gotten in planning on living closer to knoxville?

I'm probably going the other direction myself.

Hi guys,
First time posting in this thread. Just got my MCAT results back and got a 27M from the January 2011 sitting. Previous MCAT's were horrible (18 and 19)...I submitted the secondary, should I e-mail them an update with the MCAT scores, or will they automatically get it as I have already updated AACOMAS? I also have a few EC's I did and I really want an interview badly. This late in the cycle, would it even matter?

Would love to go here as I have some close family in the area.

Congrats to all accepted.

I would definitely at least e-mail them and tell them that you updated AACOMAS with your new (27) MCAT score. I think your app probably got put aside if the MCAT you submitted with was a 19, so just send them a nice e-mail that will be a little nudge to re-look at your app.

Thanks for the response! Yeah, that's what I'm probably going to do. Would an interview now yield anything positive? Or would I just be doomed for the waitlist at most?
