LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So just to ask once again (it may have already been answered already, sorry!) but is the CORE site selected by DCOM only? Or do we have a say in where we want to go do our CORE? The reason I ask is because I'm from Memphis, want to practice in Memphis, and one of the CORE sites is at Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, so obviously I would LOVE to gain experience there. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for all the help.

It is a lottery. There are about 160 different schedules (each core site has 12-24 different schedules). A schedule is just permutations of the CORE rotations i.e. Schedule one may be Methodist hospital month 1 OB month 2 IM month 3 im month 4 Peds month 5 Psych month 6 gen surg. Schedule 2 may be Methodist hospital month 1 psych month 2 gen surg, etc. So you input your top 50 choices of schedule. The computer then does a lottery. Most people got their top 5 choice schedule which turned out to be their top choice of CORE site. Some people didnt get what they wanted but thats life. There is also a time frame after lottery to exchange with classmates and try to get a different schedule.

And to add on to InTheMaking's post, while you are very likely to get placed in Memphis if you put all of its schedules on the top of your lists, the CORE sites are in fact chosen by DCOM. You are in luck that somewhere you want to go is a site. So what I mean by all of this is that if you up and decide you like nashville, not Memphis, you don't have the flexibility to set up a CORE site there. The only choice you get is from the 12 or so designated sites and even then, as said before, the lottery determines your fate and it's all dependent on your particular class' preferences that year.

INterview tommorow? anyone going to pizza NIGHT? does it really help to calm your nerves before the interview or does it make you more NERVOUS....YIKES

I really enjoyed the pizza night. I got to ask my questions candidly, meet the other interviewees so it wasn't a surprise the next day, and get a greasy meal after a long day of flying and driving.

Yes, it helps calm the nerves. it's not part of the interview and nothing is going back to the interview committee. Just go, hang out, ask your questions, get a bite to eat.

Btw, there were 9 our of 10 of the interviewees there on our pizza night!

Just got the call for an interview November 30th!!!! I am SOOOOOOOOO excited! When I saw the 423 area code I was like YES! Anyone else going on the 30th?

To answer some of the rotations questions that have been recently posted:

- CORE sites are selected via lottery based on your list you put together (see post above, which gave a great explaination).
- Electives: You get 2 during 3rd year and 4 during 4th year. You can do those with whatever doc you want in whatever specialty.
- Selectives: Rotations you have some flexibility in which specialty you want to do. DCOM provides a list of docs in specialties who have agreed to have DCOM students. I believe almost every specialty is an option and spots are all over the country, with most of them in the TN area. During 3rd year, you have 2 selectives, one in medicine, another in surgery. What this means is you can do any rotation that fits under these categories. So, with medicine, you can do IM, FP, cards, nephro, neuro, GI, endo, ICU, , etc. With surgery, you can do Gen surg, ortho, ophtho, ENT, Ob/Gyn, trauma, plastics, etc. During 4th year, you have an additional selective, classified as "Other." This can be done in any specialty that doesn't fit under either of the previous categories, like EM, rads, path. If you want to do a selective with a doc that is not on the list provided by DCOM, then you have to go thru a process to have that doc become adjunct faculty, which is very easy. DCOM with help you with that when you get to that point.
- Also, you have the option of having one 4-week rotation split into two 2-week rotations. This can be done only once, and I believe only during your 4th year.
- Once you get your 3rd/4th year schedules from the lottery results, remember that your electives/selectives are flexible, meaning you can switch those around. So if your elective is scheduled for Sept but the hospital doesn't have an opening until November, which is when your selective is scheduled, you can switch those. So remember, you can switch electives with selectives and vice versa, but you CAN'T switch electives/selectives with CORE rotations or with other required rotations since all students have to go thru those sites.
- Required rotations = 7 core rotations in 3rd year (Ob/Gyn, IM, IM, Surg, Peds, Psych), these are all done back-to-back during either 1st or 2nd semester at your core site, the other required rotation is FP, which is done during the other semester. During 4th year, required rotations are EM, rural primary care and community health x 2. EM is at your core site, community is near your core site and rural primary care is close too. When these are scheduled are set in stone, so you can't switch these with electives/selectives.
- There is a restriction in how many rotations you can do in a specialty each year. You are only allowed to do TWO 4-week rotations in the same specialty per year (excluding core rotations, meaning if you are interested in EM, then you do your EM core and 2 other EM rotations during 4th year, for a total of 3). I can tell you from experience that this is plenty of time for audition rotations, etc. Plus, if you want to get face time at a residency program but don't have the ability to do another rotation in that specialty, do another rotation at the institution and use your off days to spend time with the program you are interested in. It works quite well.

That's about it for the basic info on rotations thru DCOM. There is a ton of other info but this is what you need to know to make a decision about DCOM. My biggest piece of advice is to not get crazy with rotations during 1st and 2nd year. You are given plenty of time to setup rotations, etc and have more electives than most schools.

I am currently a 4th year from DCOM, so if any of you have questions about rotations, etc, please don't hesitate to ask. I can tell you I am happy with DCOM and the education they provided me. Good luck everyone. Starting in January, I will be seeing you interviewees, etc since I will be back in TN then. Should be lots of fun!!!

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for that great description. So hypothetically sleeping, if I wanted to practice in New York, I can chose to do all my elective (audition) rotations at various New York Hospitals; (6 months)

and I would also be able to set up selective rotations in New York as well?
(4 months?)

so 10 months of rotations could potentially be in New york?

I am in LOVE with this school

Selectives must be with preceptors that DCOM has accepted as "selective preceptors"... but I can tell you there are several selectives offered in New York as well as most of the states in the country.

So yes, you could potentially rotate alot in New York.

By the way I'm from NY as well.

WOW....thanks a lot. You guys/gals are a wealth of information. Really helpful for us who have no clue whats going on. lol

I hope that you were being sincere, because I've thought that this thread has provided a vast amount of info! Curriculum specifics (including rotations!), the feel of the student body, the feel from the interviewees, info about the area, ...it goes on. 👍

Oh my goodness, I was. I apologize if I came off as inconsiderate. I am very excited about starting next year as well but very clueless at the same time. It seems like the current students in this school kinda looks out for the people ahead ---- very welcoming IMHO.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Mr.Dude,
It is my humble opinion that you need to quit being such a b!tch. If it comes it comes if not i don't think the world will end. You're 20-21 I'm guessing? Pretty sure A.T. Stills was older than that when he started Osteopathy. You have plenty of time regardless of what happens and there isn't anything to freak out about. A large number of acceptances to medical schools are 2nd attempts.
In conclusion, chill out and enjoy the the time before you are in medical school. I have no doubts you will get in.

P.S.
If all else fails, pull an A.T. Still and create your own branch of medicine.

Brimley, I appreciate your concern and I know that it's not the end of the world...I just don't want to waste a year. I do hope I get in somewhere.

P.S. I eat ice cream all the time...it tastes delicious...and you're a b!tch.

So please clear up something for me...I'm really trying to figure this out as well and right now every bit of information that is coming is more than helpful and I'm grateful for it all...I just want to know: when rotations start does that mean you come back to the school after the end of each rotation per semester or what? I'm just confused about it all? Will you stay in that rotation area until the semester is over or until the end of the year? Thanks for all the information about the rotations!

You end up moving around alot in selectives and electives. You don't have to return to campus until graduation though. All tests are administered at your core site through the computer.

HAHA Awesome!

I was complete about the same time and just heard back from them on Friday. don't worry you should hear from them soon.

Hi..is anyone also interviewing on Nov. 30th? I just got an interview invite today..really excited about it. But apparently there is a 1.5-2 hour drive from the airport in knoxville to harrogate and unfortunately I'm not 25 which makes it harder to rent a car..and even if I were to rent a car, I have hardly any experience driving on freeway/highway, which makes it quite scary. So if anyone who's also interviewing on that day is willing to let me carpool with them please please please let me know (PM me or something). I'll definitely help with paying for gas. 🙂
Thanks so much!

This was a few years back but before I was 25 I would rent from the enterprise all the time at the airport in knoxville. The drive is also mostly back roads. There is some freeway driving but not much.

I actually drove in from Nashville in order to check out the scenery (granted I missed all of the towns off the highway, but anyway....). The highways where in great condition, and the adrenaline rush as I approached the school is a memory that'll totally last I'm sure. If you do wind up driving, just be aware of the speed limit around the hills as you get close to Harrogate!

Enterprise was nice and cheap. 👍

Accepted accepted accepted accepted i am so happy

I interviewed yesterday and fell in love with the school like I knew I would. Now I'm just praying for the chance to go here! If any of you other 11/16 er's hear anything, be sure to post!

I rented through Enterprise and didn't have a problem even though I was only 22. Make sure to mention that you are interviewing at LMU-DCOM because you get a 10% discount. The drive is fairly easy and try to do it when it's light. It makes driving easier! Good luck to all the interviewees, I hope to see you in the class of 2015!
