Are you from West Virginia? Don't they have really high out of state tuition?

Thank you for the advice! I'm not a WV resident--OOS tuition is ridiculous. So LMU-DCOM over RVUCOM?

While I am sure it is a great school, the stigma associated with it is a problem that would be best to avoid. Also, the WV tuition is ludicrous! It's more than double the IS tuition!

If you have to ask yourself that question seriously then you may not pass 1st semester...I think LMU-DCOM is the obvious choice.

Everybody looks at factors with a different weight. You're definitely going places with that kindness!

Hey JuliaJulia, I can't say much about RVU other than having shady experiences working with their admissions counselors. Check this out - after scheduling an appointment to find out how to better my application for a second application season, I had to finally stop them to inform them that I had already performed the actions that they were recommending. Well, they then admitted to not even having reviewed my file beforehand. (Um...) Things were just really disjunct. I'm sure that they have a great program, and perhaps, I just got the raw-end of a deal with respect to informed admissions personnel, but what about when it comes time for elective rotations and applying for residency? (That may be a stretch in thought.)

As for LMU-DCOM, ...what can I say? Their team was always all-together with it. That spoke volumes for me. After I interviewed, I knew without a doubt that the students, faculty, and staff seemed to be "real". Very personal. While I'm sure that there are disgruntled med students in any program, I actively engaged in conversation with many of them and found that everyone seemed so darn happy about their DCOM decision (and supportive of one another). (Compare the discussion threads btw the two programs here on SDN, one seems to have a lot of disgruntlement). DCOMs campus is state-of-the-art (well, probably so is RVU), and the faculty are seasoned. I have no doubt that DCOM will soon rise to become a top program (esp. as a primary care focused program). Just my 2 cents. Back to biochem I go....

I'm sorry that happened to you at RVUCOM. I definitely appreciate your input. Thank you so very much and good luck with everything!

Are you from Colorado? That would probably change things.
Personally I would say LMU, but I didn't visit RVU so I can't really comment.

Either way both schools will give you a good education right?

For anyone accepted do we need to send our college transcripts in? I have a strange feeling like I got an email saying we need to but now I can't find it! I just want to make sure I need to send my college transcripts before I spend the $. Thanks!!

Yes, we have to have official transcripts sent to DCOM by all of the colleges that we have attended.

We don't need it right away though right? I don't remember reading about that in the letter.

Peachy, you also interviewed on the 16th, right? Man, didn't get the call today...not looking good if you already did 🙁

No worries yet!

Apparently Dr. "S" just started signing letters today. I missed the call but he left a message. Remember what we learned at the interview? No call doesn't mean anything. Letters should be coming soon.

Best wishes!

4th yr here - just wanted to wish you all good luck! DCOM is a great school. The education is great, the place is great, and the people here are great.

You will soon learn - all of your training is variable - med school, rotations, residency - it is what you make of it. Start strong, finish strong. Have fun while you do it. Make DCOM great. Good luck to all the applicants, and good luck to all accepted - we are glad to have you!

Hey a plank owner! Glad to see it has worked out for you.
Can't wait to start.

To those of you that helped me before- I need you again!

PCOM-Ga or LMU-DCOM ?

Thank you!

Anyone interviewing on Tuesday?!? I am driving up there tomorrow and going to the pizza night and I am so excited! This is my first DO interview (and only 2nd interview total) so I am kind've nervous, but really anxious to see the school, since everything I have read about (aside from the lack of stuff to do in the area) has been amazing!

I was offered this date, but I have 2 papers and a review session for a final that day! Good luck!

Anyone else interviewing 12/13?

is the basketball court at the university inn indoors?

i'm really interested in the university inn apts, can anyone can post pictures of the inside rooms, the gym, study rooms, the basketball court, laundry area, etc...????

Hello!

I recently got accepted to LMU-DCOM 🙂! And it is definitely my first choice school. I am currently in a Master's program, and I am not too sure if LMU-DCOM know this. I mentioned it once at my interview, but it isn't anywhere else in my application. Now, my Master's ends July 23rd and I think medical school orientation is a few days away from there. I assume I got accepted based on my undergraduate statistics, and so I wanted to know if it would be wise to exit my Master's program? I have a long, rigorous 4+ years ahead, and I would love this time to save money ($9,000/semester), recoup, go on a medical mission trip and shadow for fun, so when I do start in July, I can be mentally and physically charged! I graduated undergraduate school in 2009, did research for a year and now I'm in my doing my medical masters. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

The basketball court is outdoors. There is also sand volleyball and a pool! I have no pictures for you...sorry 🙁

I was in the very same situation and here's my advice:
1. You must must must add this program on to your AACOMAS app even if you are accepted because any false information on your app being discovered can be grounds for revoking admission. I'm not saying they would do it, but who wants to find out the hard way right?? If nothing else, you can just notify the admissions office, but to make it more official, they might want to see it done on your AACOMAS.

2. Make sure to send the grades from this semester- it shouldn't affect your admissions offer, but again, must be thorough with all of this.

3. Drop that program! I did this last year for the very same financial and mental reasons you're describing and I have ZERO regrets. Just to make sure, I emailed both Janette and Dr. Leo, but they told me I did not have to complete it to matriculate in the fall.

Just to be sure, you can always shoot Janette an email confirming all of this, but my major point is PLEASE don't neglect to let them know you are in the program. If for some reason they found out, especially if your grades end up not being quite a good as your undergrad ones, they might not be too happy and trust me, you want to start out on a good foot with these people. They are your future allies. Good luck! 🙂

I am a post-bacc student, and in the process of wrapping things up for my Certificate program. I am taking Biochem now and was anticipating taking Anatomy & Physiology II in the Spring.

After I was accepted to DCOM, I emailed Ms. Martin to see if I still needed to take A&P II since it was on my AACOMAS application. She indicated I did not and my offer wasn't contingent on anything - thank god, that saved me $4000 for the Spring.

I decided to take the time off, take my son out of daycare and stay home full time and just enjoy being a wife and a mom for awhile - before the insanity begins 🙂

If you want my two cents, I would take the time off and enjoy doing what you love - you might not get to do too much of it after we get to class! 🙂

I would say...finish it. I am in my secondary year of masters program in biomedical sciences... and to be honest with you... it will benefit me when I do start medical school. Next semester I will be taking all of anatomy and neuroscience with the medical students....which means I have seen it all before. Allow me to excel, when I am in my first year of medical school. Yeah...I understand you want to take time off...but the courses aren't that bad..I am in the same boat as you...but I am just waiting on interviews because alot of schools have me on hold...because they want to see this semesters grades.

Hey everyone I just finished my interview here and have to say I am really impressed with the school, teachers and students, what a great school!!! I was curious for the others that interviewed before if they sent a thank you e-mail to the 2 people they interviewed with or not? I know they are really quick about the turn around time and just wanted to see if anyone else did or not. Thanks for your time and I really hope I get in here!!!!😀

I agree with this. Even if it doesn't hurt for entry into medical school, you don't want it to come up for residency application season. Finish strong and show you can follow through with your commitments.

I was just thinking about that...looking at where you are from, I think we had the same interviewers today 😀. I think I just might not. I don't think it would even get to them before they meet...although I'm not sure if the people that interviewed us are even on the committee or if they just fill out that form and give it to them. On second thought, maybe I will send them. It just seems like the professional thing to do. Actually if you are who I think you are, as I was driving home I was thinking...what if he sends thank you letters and I don't?!? Then they will really be like UH NO. Cause I remembered you mentioning sending them at at lunch 🙄. Hopefully we will both hear good news next week (or the week after) :luck:.

I think it is definitely the professional thing to do. As someone said below, what if the OTHER interviewees send thank you notes, but you do not? While it may not be important for their actual decision, in the event that you DO get accepted, it will only be beneficial for your future there! It shouldn't take more than ten minutes to hammer out two thank you cards, stick a stamp on them, and put them in the mailbox--what do you have to lose?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I truly appreciate it all.

I have decided to cut my Master's program short and take next semester off. Unlike most Master's programs, this is a 1 year intense program and so I've decided it would be most beneficial for me to take a breather before medical school. I have a strong undergraduate background (micro and molecular biology) so I feel I will be okay in medical school. I know many people who went straight from undergrad to medical school and are doing fine! I called the admissions office yesterday and was very straight forward and asked if I had to complete my Master's degree, to which her response was no. I can always say that I just took graduate school classes to kill time, which is something people often do to keep academically involved. I will still finish the semester strong and have already planned a trip to Costa Rica in February for a medical mission trip!

I look forward to the next 7 months ahead! Cheers to an enjoyable time before the craziness of medical school! Thank you again for all the advice.

I just cancelled my interview for Dec 7th so its up for grabs if anyone needs an earlier date!

for those who were accepted here, would you mind sharing your GPA and MCAt scores?

I will be submitting my application today and wanted to know if I should just wait for the next cycle as its already late. My gpa is strong, but a low mCAT score.

Thanks

This sounds like a good plan. I just wanted to add the following for you and/or others reading the feed:
In my interview, I commented on the fact that there were only two interviewees that were still in undergraduate school (myself included). They told me that about 60% of students going into medical school are fresh out of undergrad...So we should all be just fine!

I hope your mission trip in February is great!

I didn't but I am paranoid about emailing people. I would have sent a thank you note, but there was not enough time.

hey everybody, this is my first time posting (hurrah!)

i was a little late getting my stuff in, so i haven't heard anything yet...but i was just curious as to how many students this school accepts? i've heard a lot of good things about it.

"...thank you e-mail to the 2 people they interviewed with or not? I know they are really quick about the turn around time and just wanted to see if anyone else did or not."

You betcha. I immediately went to the dollar store, bought 3 cards (one for Bob, of course), and had them put them into the respective faculty/staff mailboxes (thanks for the advice Ann!). I did this because I wanted to, not because I was worried about other applicants. I don't think that one would be rejected (or preferred over another) if they were to submit a card.

...I have decided to cut my Master's program short and take next semester off.

You know, we spend so much time hyperventilating ourselves trying to become "good enough". I like your decision. You could tell residency directors later in the game that you did follow through with your commitments - you got into medical school. And now have awesome board scores. AND, you took some time to stop and smell the roses. 👍

I will be submitting my application today and wanted to know if I should just wait for the next cycle as its already late. My gpa is strong, but a low mCAT score.

This was me last year. My advice - apply early next year! Early, early, early!!! And, take extras like Biochem, A&P, Micro, Gentics, etc., if you haven't already.

Also, be sure to call and speak with an admissions counselor. That's really the best advice in my opinion. Everyone has unique things that they bring to the table.
