LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you are looking for an awesome (though a little pricey) steak, then go to Ye Olde Steakhouse. On birthdays or visits from family, we would go there. The Cupcakery is boss for some awesome cupcakes:laugh:. Also check out the UT strip. It has quite a few bars and lots of hot undergrads 😉
lol from the sounds of it I would live on the UT strip then. However gods blessed me with a beautiful women and I am very happily married, so I am off the market. I try not to tell people because women are usually very upset when they are reminded or devastated if they where unaware.

Oh i am currently at the holiday inn and have been enjoying my stay. as expected I am IN LOVE with the area. although I really dont see why people complain all that much about the area or about it bieng too rural. middlesboro is a pretty big town. It does get pretty rural if you want it to be (for me I want it to be) my wife and I went out and found some of the backwoods, and looked at real estate. We also visited LMU's campus. It's by far the most beautiful college campus I have ever seen and to anyone who hasn't yet visited or witnessed DCOM, its magestic and to me it SCREAMS med school. I cannot wait to see the inside of the buillding. I love it and hopefully I am blessed with an acceptance(if granted one I will certainly be a future classmate). ok too much typing I know, but this is the first time I got to use our laptop as my wifes been hogging it looking into jobs/real estate.

If anybody is here already for their interview and wants to meet up and say hello, just lemme know.

Yiot, how'd it go? My interview is next week and I was hoping you'd hop right on here and give us all the details haha.

I just got back. I think my interview went well. Ofcourse there are answers I wish I could go back and and/or questions(I asked), looking back on it now but I still feel my answers were sufficient and most importantly honest. I think it might have ended on a sour note but hopefully they look at the whole interview.

my advice to anybody, remain calm, be honest. that is all. but take my answers with a grain of salt, I have no idea whether im accepted/waitlisted/or even rejected yet. lol

oh also, dont prepare for anything but the basics(why medicine). my questions where completely out of the blue and unnexpected.

if you have any questions lemme know and ill inform you more on the interview experience but thats pretty much it.

Now the waiting begins. If accepted, I hope to be there in the fall:xf:

im too tired now lol off to bed

?? 😕😕 ??
i think a lot of it depends on your interviewer honestly. Mine just really wanted to get to know me which I thought was a good thing. I got to talk about myself etc. Overall it was VERY laid back. It was an enjoyable experience. Just try not to get too nervous in the mourning presentation (i did). other than that I think youll be ok man honestly. They really really want to get to know you and whether you will be a good fit for the school. I just went in there and was an open book. i really dont think you can prepare other than the basics which are why they invited you there anyway. its a completely closed file interview so you really need to explain to them why you want to be a Doctor. other than that the other questions are completely fair game. As long as your good on your feet then you should be fine. if you have any specific questions feel fre to pm me and ill let you know if I can help. also so we dont fill up this thread.

there is one negative about the interview. It really makes you wanna go there. At least for me it did. meeting all the faculty they just seem like amazing amazing people with very unique different stories and backgrounds(ie military etc) and I am psyched at the possibility of learning from them.

Me too!! Sorry I didn't make it by the interview room while you all were waiting! I didn't even wake up until WAY late that day. I'm sure it went great though, so be sure to keep me (and everyone else on here) posted! Only a little while longer to go!!

Can any current student tell me what computer they make you buy for school? Is it a Lenovo tablet? I don't remember if they mentioned it during the interview day or not.

Hi All!!!
So I'm interviewing this upcoming Monday. It's my very first one EVER. I'm super nervous and really don't know what to expect. Is anyone else interviewing the same day? I'm just wondering if I need to bring anything with me. I've spoken to my doctor and he said I won't need to bc they have everything, but I'm not sure. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks =) and congrats to all those already accepted!

I hope so. cause everytime my phone rings things get knocked over, my dogs freak out etc cause i fly across the room to get it. My wife even yelled at me today screaming "they said it was gonna be at least 10 days!, plus its 7:30 at night and its just your sister calling!!!!"

I just brought a copy of my secondary answers, my personal statement and application. Its closed file so they don't know that stuff but I brought it so I could read about things I wanted them to know that I had done in the past since they didnt know anything about me. I would bring a folder (even thought they give you one, plus a sweet pen) just so you can take some business cards from them or the interviewers etc. It looks better imo if you have something with you rather than just bieng empty handed. Just what I had thought and did, doesn't mean you "have" to do it.

You can bring stuff with you (several ppl brought leather folders), but you don't need anything. No one in my group read over anything.
Since it's closed file, I would suggest you practice talking about yourself. Also why DO, why LMU, and why TN. You can't really prepare for the other stuff they give (I only heard bits and pieces from others about questions from the Feedback section being used). As long as you're sincere and can think on your feet, you'll do great! Good luck and I hope to see you in class this July!

plus a sweet pen

My pen broke 2 mins after we started in the morning. There's nothing quite like being presented info and not being able to take any extra notes because you didn't bring a pen and the one they gave you broke! I had to ask Ms. Janette to get me another one and she said "these cheap things break all the time!" Good thing I'm not going there for the writing supplies...

lol man thats ruff. ive got my pen in a glass case already. Its gonna be placed on my mantle next to my undergraduate diploma:laugh:

Anyone interviewing at LMU this week and interested in carpooling? I'll be flying into McGhee-Tyson airport on Monday at noon, and flying out on Wednesday around 3pm. I will be renting a car at the airport and driving out to Middlesboro to stay at the Holiday Inn Express. I wouldn't mind sharing the car rental fee (and the long drive) with a fellow interviewer if anyone is interested. Email me: [email protected] if you're interested.

I feel like most times I sign onto SDN, there is a new post in this thread from you, so therefore, I think you've earned this thread as your own. 🙂
well, thank you lol. i guess im pretty bored at home sometimes. I dont have much going on right now so im on SDN every 5 minutes. i go from checking me email, to checking my facebook, to checkin sdn and then eating. then I repeat the process probably every 10-15 minutes. lol

I understand as how you feel as I just got my first interview invite, although not with LMU. (Although I still am hoping for one to LMU in the near future.)

Well the near future is here! I just talked with Robin and due to a cancellation, I will be interviewing at LMU on Tuesday Feb 15th.

This means I will have back to back interviews, at two different schools, on Monday and Tuesday.

Cool, I'll see you there! It doesn't sound like our travel schedules will match, but take look at a few posts up if you're interested in carpooling.

I am interested and driving a rental car. However, I will be coming up from Georgia to LMU on Monday afternoon and leave for Memphis late Tuesday afternoon.

I will not be hard to spot Monday night/Tuesday; I will be the "old guy" in the group of those being interviewed.

Double interviews are rough. After one of the TN snowstorms in Dec, I had to drive down to LMU in the morning. Before you think I'm crazy, I only live an hr and a half away and I'm used to the snow warnings usually being wrong (since meteorology is soooo reliable ). I then had to drive all the way to WCU-COM in MS and interview the next day. Got in at both places, but I was worn ragged. I've heard of some people lining up multiple interviews (3 or 4), but I don't know how they can take it. Good luck and hopefully LMU will show you some love, with it being after Valentine's and all 😉

My double interview will be nowhere near as bad as yours. I will end making a "triangle". As for lining up more than 2 interviews back-to-back, to me that is crazy😱

I feel fortunate to be interviewing at my top 2 choices and I would receive a great medical education at either place. We will see how it works out.

6:30 PM - ours lasted for well over two hours though, so still stop by even if you arrive a little after this time.

I will definitely try and be there.

It depends on what time my first interview ends. Then it is about a 6 hour drive

How much time should I allow for driving back to the Knoxville airport from LMU-DCOM? I'm interviewing on 2/21, and the latest flight I can find leaves at 5:15pm.

Can any current student tell me what computer they make you buy for school? Is it a Lenovo tablet? I don't remember if they mentioned it during the interview day or not.

It's a Lenovo tablet, but the school provides it. Don't worry, you won't have to do a thing there.

You should get there in about an hour and 40 minutes, but I would allow for 2 hours (weather, road conditions, driving speed, etc). Good luck!

Yup lol more like three hours
Btw they better accept you faith or I won't go.

Thanks! Does the interview day generally conclude by 1:30pm, or closer to 2?

For those who've rented at car at the Knoxville airport, how long does it usually take to return it and then get to the check-in area?

Not long at all. I think my flight flew out at 5:30 and I had plenty of time to sit and relax as I waited for my plane. I even ate at quizno's while looking over all of the material they gave us.

I can't remember exactly what time it concluded, but I stayed the whole time and even took the tour with Bob after, so you shouldn't be tooo worried about time.

Good luck!

Did you interview Dec 13th?

Due to weather conditions, we go out earlier than scheduled on my date ut you should plan for 2.

Yea. I think most of us who interviewed that day were accepted. I'm the guy from Florida.

It is a very small airport. Actually I have been to several airports across the country and this one is probably my favorite.

Wow Dr Yiot. You make my heart pitter-pat as I relive my interview experience vicariously through you!

👍

Hey everyone,
Figured I'd go ahead and say hi. I've been creeping on this forum for over a year, and on this thread for about two months. I just got the accpetance call from Dean Stowers and will be attending LMU come next year. I am looking forward to meeting yall come July! Good luck to the remaining applicants.

P.S. Just because you apply late in the cycle doesn't mean there isn't a chance. I didn't submit to AACOMAS until the middle of January. So for all the late applicants, don't let everyone tear you down! They told us on 2/7 that approximately only half the seats had been filled at that time.

WOW! golfingdoc, if you don't mind me asking, what were your stats? (PM me if you'd like) 🙂

aspirant11, I don't see why some are so uptight about their stats, but yeah it doesn't bother me to post them...

I'm IS and from a rural east tennessee town (that could have played a small factor in the adcom's decision.)
3.64sGPA
3.58cGPA
25Q MCAT
Normal extracurricular: fraternity, volunteering/shadowing, a few semesters of research, work in the Dean's office, but nothing truly extraordinary.

I know by reading through this thread that the MCAT is average and the gpa is maybe a little above average. I honestly just got lucky with the quick interview. Received a call less than a week after being complete with AACOMAS for an interview due to a cancellation. I'm sure I'm not as informed as most of the posters about what the school wants but I feel like my quick turnaround time can be attributed to the perfect fit the school provided me. My goals and the school's mission statement are basically identical, so I just emphasized this.

For the members that get nervous for the interview, I was more nervous at the Pizza Hut meet and greet than I was during my interview. They honestly just want to get a feel for the true you, so just be yourself. I was asked questions like: What are your study habits? If you could do one thing over, what would it be? Tell us about yourself (Why DCOM, DO, and Medicine), and What do you do for fun?

Hope this info helps and I apologize for the length.

My stats were the same (numbers, fraternity, research, cs, etc) and I got an interview a week after I submitted my secondary (also from small rural town near golfingdoc). If you are from TN, you should hear back quickly. Good luck aspirant!

On a completely different note, the AOA has posted the Match results for today:

congrats man,i interviewed the next day, hopefully i hear something back:scared:

Dr. Yiot,
I hope you hear something soon too. I can tell by your previous posts that you you have a real desire to attend LMU. Hopefully, due to more interviews today, the Dean is busy and hasn't had time to contact everyone. Along with everyone else on the thread, I'm rooting for ya!

Long day traveling, but I made it! Interview tomorrow AM. :scared:
