Loma Linda Interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello. So I have another random question, and this question has been bugging me for a long time. I really would love to be accepted to Loma Linda, and I know their first preference is for SDA and then for non-SDA Christians. Well, I am a pretty devout Christian (Presbyterian) and was wondering for you applicants, how much you emphasized your religion and God in your applications or personal statement? I am confused as to what I should do because a.) I am not a super strong applicant (low GPA, MCAT score yet to be determined, really good personal statement and decent extracurriculars), and so I do not want to ruin my chances of getting accepted to non-Christian schools, but I do not want to lose my chance at Loma Linda either because I do not mention religion in my application. I really don't know what to do. 😕 Any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. 😳

I didn't mention religion at all in my personal statement, but then talked more about why I want to be a Christian physician in my secondary application, and I got an interview. However, my personal statement had religious undertones even though it never mentioned religion. My entire reason for wanting to go into medicine closely reflects Loma Linda's Mission Statement, and this was very clear in my personal statement. Hope that helps! PM me if you want to read my personal statement.

i agree...the 2ndary covers religion in-depth so you dont have to worry about it in your primary application. I didnt mention a single religious fact in my first application (except for in one EC) and I have at least gotten to the interview stage at LLU...so dont worry about the primary app...all you should be worried about is studying for the mcat because non-SDAs need high mcat scores than SDAs to get in at LLU

Thanks for the info!..I'll be sure to keep all your suggestions in mind. 🙂

My AMCAS application didn't have a single statement/EC related to religion or faith and I got in. 🙂

I have a couple of questions about LLU maybe someone can shed some light on them.
1. What does it mean when they told me that LLU has the students with best clinical skills out of all the Us in Cali?
There is an exam that all allopathic California medical students take (I just don't know about osteopathic). The exam consists of interviewing/examining a standardized patient (basically an actor who has been trained to act like a patient). You are videotaped and the examiners score you based upon your skills. LLU's average on this exam is always the highest.

2. If/when do they send finaid packages to accepted students? what kinds they have?
Sorry, I have no idea.

3. Apologize my ignorance: what was the new huge construction on campus?
DoctaJay will know more about this than I, but I think it will have new lecture halls, a new anatomy lab, and a new simulation lab. I'm sure there is more.

4. I believe their system is pass/fail, right?
Yes.

5. Are they still in transition from the old curriculum (traditional) to the new (integrated)? Will my class be on the new curriculum?
Yes and yes. We are in transition, next year will be entirely on the new curriculum.

6. I was told that there was a lack of basic science profs by one of my interviewers. How does this affect your education?
I guess that more basic science profs would mean that each prof could give less lectures. More variety, but less continuity.

7. I assume if you do well in the program you could potentially match in any residency you may be interested. I know their match list is not posted but does anyone know anything about it.
No, but I do know that the bottom line is your boards. I know one 4th year who got a 161 on step one and interviewed at Harvard, Mayo, etc. How you do on your boards is really up to the individual.

8. Finally, tell me something about the facilitation of learning/technolgy available at LLU.
Thank you very much in advance.
Technology is probably LLU's weakest area. There are not very many online resources. Pretty much everything is books and paper. I'm not sure what else to say...let me know if you have a more specific question.

Is it a true Pass/Fail?? or do they have a hidden ranking, and do they give out grades in year 3/4?

Just wondering -- do you mean a 261? Or did the person really bomb the boards and still get sweet interviews?

You cant graduate with a 161, I think the minimum passing score is a 184 or atleast around there, so im sure it is 26😀

OK, so now I am terrified after reading this whole thread. I interviewed with LLU on Nov. 27, and have yet to hear anything from them. I am SDA from a non-SDA school. LLU is the only med-school I want to go to, so I am so bummed I haven't heard anything yet. Should I call to see if my rejection letter got lost in the mail?

But congrats to those who have been accepted!
Send in a LOI (letter of intent). Although LLU doesn't give much info over the phone or on their website, they take into consideration the desire the applicant has to attend LLU specifically. Its not guaranteed, but it does help.

Is it a true Pass/Fail?? or do they have a hidden ranking, and do they give out grades in year 3/4?
The way LLU does it is based on the Pass/Fail system and overall points. So at the beginning of the year, they tell you what is a passing grade for each class (it is different for some classes like evidence based medicine). So lets say that to pass a CLASS, you needed to score a 70% or earn 700/1000 points from all of your tests. That means that you may be able to technically fail a couple of tests points wise, but if your overall points still equals 700 or more, then you have passed the class. That is essentially how it goes. So yes, LLU is truly Pass/Fail, but you just have the opportunity to see the actual points you earned.

In terms of ranking, LLU does it a really cool way in order to always make you look better. You are allowed to choose how you want to be ranked. You can choose to be ranked against your fellow classmates, or you can choose to be ranked depending on how you do on your NBME subject board tests which the majority of medical students in the country take. This is good because on average, LLU students do really well compared to other medical students on those tests. But if you happened to be ranked 87th percentile in your class, but on 67th percentile nationally on the subject boards, then you can choose the better of the two and that is what will go in your dean's letter.

So you can decide right before you apply??? or do you have to choose from Day 1? and how are the third and fourth year graded?? Is it out of 1000 also and a certain percentage of it is for the NBME test and a certain percentage from your directors evaluation, etc??

thank you doctajay

Snowdoc already answered these questions but I guess repetition won't hurt 🙂:

I have a couple of questions about LLU maybe someone can shed some light on them.
1. What does it mean when they told me that LLU has the students with best clinical skills out of all the Us in Cali?

Like snowdoc said. There is a clinical skills test that all of the medical students in cali take. We've been #1 out of all the cali schools for the past 10 years, and the closest 2nd was 10% below us. They just really teach you great clinical skills here, which is something you'll take with you for the rest of your practice

2. If/when do they send finaid packages to accepted students? what kinds they have?

I recall it being sometime in the summer. its all done through your online account which you get as soon as you are accepted (whether you decide to matriculate or not) so it should be coming maybe around June or so.

3. Apologize my ignorance: what was the new huge construction on campus?

The centential complex.
complexfront.jpg

complexback.jpg

Its going to be sexy, new, and open in 2009. They are also moving the childrens hospital to a new site soon and replacing a large amount of the hospital with a special cancer institute.

4. I believe their system is pass/fail, right?

Yes, pass/fail. If you earn the points needed to pass the class, regardless of your individual test scores, then you passed the class.

5. Are they still in transition from the old curriculum (traditional) to the new (integrated)? Will my class be on the new curriculum?

My year is the last transition period. Your year (if you decide to matriculate) will be the first fully integrated year. Meaning that you won't have a physiology test anymore, but a Cardiovascular System test which includes the physio, anatomy, histology, embryology, etc. of the heart.

6. I was told that there was a lack of basic science profs by one of my interviewers. How does this affect your education?

The Dean of Education told us about this before the accrediation team came for their visitation. He explained to us that currently, for the amount of medical students LLU currently has, there ARE enough basic science professors. But if LLU has to increase their class size as mandated by the AAMC, then they wouldn't have enough basic science professors to meet the AAMC mandate. But they are luring more and more professors with the new facilities being built and various other methods. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about this. You'll have more than enough teachers for you needs.

7. I assume if you do well in the program you could potentially match in any residency you may be interested. I know their match list is not posted but does anyone know anything about it.

I've never seen it but they do have a map with the faces of the graduates stuck in the areas of the country they matched into. they had alot of faces in california and alot of the east coast. I'll keep my eyes open for a actual list

8. Finally, tell me something about the facilitation of learning/technolgy available at LLU.

Um, all of our tests or done by paper, and I'm not sure if they plan on transitioning anytime soon. Grades are online as wells as powerpoints, etc. Clinically, they have lots of robotic models for you to learn a host of skills. I'm not sure what to compare it too, but as a technological geek, the only thing I think we are lacking is school sponsored videotaping of the lectures. But most schools don't do this.

Thank you very much in advance.

I think you decide before your Dean's letter is written, so you'll have time to see which one is better, your NBME scores or your actual class rank.

I'm honestly not sure about the specific grading methods, although I'm sure they told us or its in one of the numerous papers given to us at orientation...I just haven't looked at it. the example of 1000 I used for just for explanation. the points vary for class to class.

OK, thank you! I called them this morning to confirm that I have not been rejected. Hopefully a letter of intent will help push me a little bit further up the pile.

Just wondering -- do you mean a 261? Or did the person really bomb the boards and still get sweet interviews?

Sorry....my brain is a little on the tired side. 🙂

Yes, 261.

uh, am I the only one noticing how provocative this person's avatar is..? sorry to say, but I don't think this sort of display matches with what LLU is all about. I honestly feel like throwing some clothes on you, Amy.😳

I agree. I don't like having to avert my eyes from that picture. High five Amy👍

Thank you very much DoctaJay and snowdoc for the valuable data shared.
Additionally, do you have any small group case studies?
I know about the ward experience, but does patient contact continue throughout the first two years? How?
Are the classes laptop ready (internet, etc)?
And finally, I assume then that I may be using the new building for 2nd year classes, right?
Thank you so much in advance.

Additionally, do you have any small group case studies?
Yes, the class is called Evidence Based Medicine. We definitely don't meet as much as other schools though, which is a blessing.
I know about the ward experience, but does patient contact continue throughout the first two years? How? First year, the wards experience is the extent of your formal patient experience. Second year you get more during the year. But trust me, patient experience really isn't all that fun when you don't know anything. So dont' get lured by how much patient experience you get a medical schools. You'll get quite enough experience from 3rd year on.
Are the classes laptop ready (internet, etc)?
All classrooms and other places (study halls, etc.) that you'll need internet access have WIFI, so you'll be fine.
And finally, I assume then that I may be using the new building for 2nd year classes, right?
Most deifnitely your second year, and hopefully the second half of your first year. Since the clnical skills lab will be moved to the new building, you'll be revisting the complex also in your 3rd and 4th year.

So christians arent allowed to wear bikinis??? give me a break

DoctaJay - thanks for all your help in answering the questions. I have another to add to the slew of questions already answered. How do lectures and notes work - are you given paper packets of notes or online notes or do you have to take your own notes?

Thanks!😀

At the beggining of each quarter they give you a stack of papers for that quarter. You can go to class and then read them, or you can just read them, but either way, you are responsible for everything in that stack. This is how much we have learned (paper stack wise) from the start of medical school up to the last test week (2 weeks ago):

img_1906.JPG

Lol, don't be scared...its doable 😀

P.S.-Actually, the stack should be larger since I don't have my patient diagnosis papers in that stack.

Haha thanks DoctaJay. I am not too scared...I am excited for it and to learn this stuff in the context of medicine (rather than just trying to pass a class). Thanks again for all your help - its encouraging to know students like you go to LLU. :hardy:

Im still waiting for the call! (I interviewed 1/24 - hopefully it will happen soon)

So christians arent allowed to wear bikinis??? give me a break

I guess you just don't get it, do you? what do you suppose is the reason for all this discussion about there not being any caffeine served on campus and everything being closed on Saturdays??

To answer your question, of course you're allowed to wear bikinis... just as how you're also allowed to smoke, drink, eat unclean meats, or not keep the Sabbath; it's all a matter of personal choice.

I am well aware of LLUs policies and am fairly well read on the seventh day religion. I spent 10 years of my life growing up there. While some of my beliefs may be different than LLUs (caffeine and meat), I strongly believe in the mission of the university which is basically to put out competent, christian physicians. Its not like Im soliciting sex, so please dont be so quick to judge and basically say that I dont uphold LLUs religious values because IMO that is rather hypocrital. I also dont think putting swim apparel in the same category as getting wasted and drugs is fair either.

I am not trying to start any arguments. I have my opinion and you have yours, and this is all I am going to say on the subject

Thank you.

did you really compare wearing a swimsuit to keeping the sabbath holy? i think that might be a stretch. I know what you are saying. But one is a commandment, the other is a personal choice. I know a bikini might be linked to lust or sins of the flesh but if you use that arguement then so could be anything that you wear to "look/feel good" (ie make up, attractive smells, etc...) They are all to stimulate desire. A Christian simply understands that withholding from said desires strengthens his/her relationship with Christ. regardless...this topic is a little off based for this thread and wont help any of us get into a medical school.

If you look back to my original post you'll see that I did not say you're soliciting sex. My point is that LLU is a conservative, SDA institution and your avatar is hardly anything conservative. If I may, what point are you trying to make by using that picture anyway?

To tdsbird, I think you meant to say "holy" and not holly, which is either a woman's name or that of a tree. If this thread were about any other medical school then yes this topic would be irrelevant.

As with other institutions, LLU has its own culture and tradition that many might find difficult to live by; either you [can] accept them or not. This is something to really consider before making any long-term commitments.

Grading is Honors/Pass/Fail

And ranking can also be reported as BOTH class rank and NBME %ile. Before your Dean's letter is sent out in November of your 4th year, you are asked which ranking metho you prefer.

Go back and read my first two sentences again. Thankfully, all that matters is what the Adcoms think

DoctaJay you couldn't be more helpful if you tried.
Another Q: is it enough to study from those packages or do you also have to read from the books?
Thanks in advance.

Folks. SDN is not a good place for religious discussions. They just never turn out well here. Also for future reference, if you find anything inappropriate on SDN whether it be a post, thread, or picture the correct channel for addressing it is to use the report button (the triangle below the user's profile). Once something is reported, the moderators will access it, and decide what to do. As of yet, we have received no complaints about her avatar so lets not berate her in this thread and lets try to stay on topic.

well i am glad that your rebuttal to my argument is my horrible spelling.

Nonetheless, I believe that both of you are missing the point. Since I have begun working here at loma linda with an SDA phd student and an SDA physician, I have had hours of discussion in loma linda about loma linda, its mission, and SDA. It mission is 'to make man whole' which the medical school strives to do by training excellent physicians with outstanding morals. There are plenty of non-Christians here and no one tries to convert them because of respect of other religions. I am a catholic who loves meat and drinks alcohol and the SDA dr. I work under bought me a beer and a chicken dinner when he took me to dinner one night. Loma Linda is conservative, but just yesterday I saw two girls in the Loma Linda rec center's hot tub in (as small as that picture) bikinis and no one said a thing. this place is based in religion but revolves around kindness and respect. two factors that are more important then being religious in succeed (not money-wise) as a doctor. If either of you two come here to visit or for school you will see that these points I make are apparent everywhere.

Furthermore, it is the internet. Nothing here should be taken too seriously especially on forums where you can exist anonymously. I don't think either of you would act this way if you, as a person, could be connected to your words. Loma linda is a great place (with some beautiful women and some perverted guys (and probably switched around as well)). All I can suggest is to respect each other and if you are Christian leave the judging up to God.

So are there any good places to eat in Loma Linda or redlands anymore? and are the number of gangs still prevalent?

Also are there any athletic facilities available for med students and what are they like

back on topic, GOOD!

a whole lot of food has develop just north of Loma Linda and Redlands is a more up scale and has plenty of fast food and nicer restaurants. North of Loma Linda has the second highest crime rate in all of CA but I have had no problems living here except my car got egged (probably not a gang's doing).

athletic facilities http://www.llu.edu/llu/drayson/ - it is very nice (low on space for weights) and free for all students (and i believe residents and faculty) there is a massive field for a whole lot of intramurals, a pool (with a slide!!!), yoga room (no charge for most classes), and a three court basketball gym with an indoor track...also tennis, volleyball, racquetball, ping pong etc...

The food that you can buy from the gangs is pretty good.

Hmm, I think I took swim lessons there one year, lol.

It is really nice.

I had no idea your intention in posting that was to argue.

…I am a catholic who loves meat and drinks alcohol and the SDA dr. You make it seem as though this sort of thing is very common. I've been to Loma Linda on several occasions and never once saw this to be "apparent everywhere" as you put it. Also, wearing swimsuits to a hot tub is different from wearing them to pose for provocative photos.

…I don't think either of you would act this way if you, as a person, could be connected to your words.

I am here as I would be if we met in person.

Loma linda is a great place (with some beautiful women and some perverted guys (and probably switched around as well)). All I can suggest is to respect each other and if you are Christian leave the judging up to God.

To say that others are "perverted" is contrary to the last sentence of your statement. Keep it real folks.

Keep it real folks.

OK, I've had enough. I am a Christian, and a pretty conservative one, at that. While I wouldn't necessarily flaunt photos of scantily clad women on my computer, I do appreciate the distinctive features of the opposite sex--are they not also God's creation? Now, if I end up at Loma Linda, I sincerely hope that your kind of intolerant attitude will be the minority. I will get quite annoyed if people like you breathe down my back for bringing Starbucks to class, or urge a fellow classmate to protect her bosom.

Birds, bees, and flowers are God's creations; women, on the other hand, are one level above that as they are our [men's] equal counterparts.

Now, if I end up at Loma Linda, I sincerely hope that your kind of intolerant attitude will be the minority. I will get quite annoyed if people like you breathe down my back for bringing Starbucks to class, or urge a fellow classmate to protect her bosom.
"Intolerance" is too strong a word to use because I am hardly intolerant as you seem impatient. The only reason I would ever breathe down yours or anyone's back is if there's a good reason for me to do so (e.g. we were on the moon and you carried an oxygen tank on your back). Following tdsbird2's reasoning, bringing Starbucks to class is hardly comparable to walking around half-naked. As I've previously mentioned however, LLU has traditionally been a conservative school. I'm not an expert on LLU, but if being liberal is something you just can't change then you might have a tough time adapting to some of their policies. That being said, I do hope you [and everyone else] end up at LLU.

LOL, if being too conservative is something you can not change then you might have a tough time adapting to southern california, one of the most liberal places on earth.

Ha very true amwatts. I almost had a heart attack when I saw how liberal the West Coast adventism was compared to the east coast version I was used to back home. And us adventists on the east coast aren't anywhere as conservative as the folks back in Michigan (kind of where the church started). Its all relative...but we all get along here at LLU, and we should continue that theme and get along here in this thread.

sounds good to me😀

I know several LLU students, its not as conservative as you would think. (well relative to other SDA institutions)

Lets get this thread back on track...any idea of how many acceptances Loma Linda has given out? And how many acceptaces do they normally offer?

Does anybody know when the people who interviewed in early Feb will hear back?

Aaaahhh.. the gym.

I love this topic (better than listening to that fella up there rant about someones bikini). The Drayson Center is pretty good. I had the privelidge of working in a really nice gym - much larger than Drayson - for several years before I moved here (to this stinkin' OVEN of a city). Drayson is not ideal for getting a hardcore workout if hitting the iron is your thing - and it is one of my passions. Nor does it have an abundance of treadmills for those of us who like to get on one without having to wait. Oh, and parking really, really sucks. And yet... there is some good news. I have been working out there about 5 days a week since i moved here in May '07 (I know, you're thinking, "is that the good news?"), and I manage to get a killer workout each time - my point is that the weightroom, although cramped at times with a limited amount of equipment, is totally ADEQUATE. With some creativity and, perhaps, a bit of guidance, you can beat the heck out of yourself pert durn good. Treadmills are usually full, but they are limited to a 30 minute max, so you can sign up, lift some weights, then run on your reserved treadmill. About 10 more treadmills would be nice, but, hey, that brings us to our next topic - the tracks. There is an indoor, suspended, track (which I haven't used), and there is an outdoor track that is 1/2 mile/lap. 'Course running in smog city sucks, but so does... well, yeah, runnning in smog sucks. Run in the fall and winter. There is also a superfield (why is it a SUPER-field? I don't know, it just looks like a big field to me, but, hey, what do I know?) that is circumscribed by the aforementioned outdoor track. Lots of soccer games, intramural stuff, etc. There is a really nice poo (that's short for pool) and a hot tub thingy. Why would anyone sit in hot water in this blasted heat, you ask? I haven't the foggiest. I wonder if they just dont heat it during the summer and let the sun do all the work. That makes me wonder how they keep the pool cool here during the scorching summers. Ice maybe? Who knows? In any case, the pool IS nice. Back inside Drayson, there are a couple aerobics rooms. In these rooms girls walk around in brazilian-style thong bikinis and do kickboxing. Just kidding, I'm just still overtly nagging that kook up there to give it a rest. Nonetheless, there are plenty of kickboxing classes, karate, cardio-pump, stuff like that. There are raquet ball enclosures, tennis courts, basketball court, personal trainers, masseuses from Dr. Seusses, a study area, and a whole bunch of other stuffs that I am probably forgetting. Oh, yeah, big plus - clean bathrooms/locker rooms. But seriously, the number one reason Drayson kicks a$$ is because it is free for students. You just can't beat that. You will get plenty of brain and soul food at school and chapel and church. Here you can balance it out with body maintenance for free. And it is in a Christian environment. I gotta admit Loma Linda U. really has a good idea about balancing one's body mind and spirit. Except maybe the vegetarian thing. I have no intention of ever stopping eating meat. Jesus ate fish right? And that cafeteria won't serve meat, but you oughtta see all the fried crap they serve. It is kinda... well we'll not go there. Suffice it to say, LLU, while far from perfect is a GREAT institution (and I mean great to the full extent of the adjective) and I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate to have been accepted. And noone even bats an eye at those of us who do drink coffee and pepsi and eat beef jerky and turkey sandwiches and wear bikinis to class - well, it's been chilly so I've been wearing my one-piece, but, anyway. If you get in, don't study till' your brain oozes out of your ears. Hit the gym, increase your GH and IGF-1 and all those other cool exercise-activated hormones and you will make your studying WAY more productive!

Puh-puh-puh- PEACE!
