Hey everyone,

So I am fortunate enough to have the tough decision of choosing between TouroCOM-Harlem and LECOM in the PBL pathway right now.

Both schools have accepted me and are asking for a hefty deposit.

Any input you guys can give is much appreciated. I know a thread like this has existed in the past but the information appeared to be fairly outdated. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/lecom-e-vs-touro-ny.1058447/

Lecom
Pros:

Cheap
PBL (huge pro for me)
good reputation
good match list
good boards pass rate
older program, more established
did I mention cheap?

Cons:
Honestly, before reading this forum and some other websites....I didnt have many
PBL doesn't use real cadavers just virtual learning.
But I have read a lot of horror stories in these threads:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/lake-erie-lecom-discussion-thread-2013-2014.1002405/

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/do-not-go-to-lecom.259953/

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/why-the-lecom-hate.952132/

and even found a website http://wehatelecom.com

Can anyone who actually goes there shed light on this? definitely appears a little scary...

Touro:
pros:
i like the itunesU learning style
cadavers for all
seemed really chill when I was there
closer to home for me, but not commutable
students seemed to love it
in manhattan

cons:
newer school
not as well established match/clerkships from what I could tell
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ relative to LECOM

Thanks all!

the pros you listed for LECOM seem more important than the ones you wrote for Touro. and from my understanding of LECOM, PBL students still have access to the cadaver to study from...it'sjust that you might not do the actual dissecting.

So in my opinion, sounds likeLECOM is the better choice. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the reply,

I guess my trepidation is really based on the seemingly negative opinion of the school among the student population as evident in those links about LECOM. Sort of concerns me that people seem to hate it so much.

Touro-Harlem has a pretty good match list when compared to LECOM-E. This is likely due to the higher caliber of student that generally attends there (their average MCAT is pretty high for a DO school, as they tend to draw in a lot people who really just want to be in NYC at any and all cost) and the close proximity to a large number of hospitals, making it easy to arrange elective rotations at places you might like to eventually match at. If you're at LECOM-E, you're going to have a hell of a drive for many of your electives. I'd go with Touro myself.

Yea I was looking through the match lists and they both appear to be doing pretty well. The thing is touro is nearly double the price and so I guess Im trying to find out if there is anything that really validates that besides being in NYC.

Although it may be worth double the price if I would be miserable at LECOM? The perception among is something that Im interested in and am hoping someone from LECOM could weigh in.

I would also be interested in more info regarding these two schools and how to choose between them.

Bump: Any Touro or Lecom Students out there that can talk about what life is like at their school?

Lecom unless you have no problem dealing with Touro's disorganized and horrible administration. And PBL without cadavers is pretty good. You go thorough thousands of virtual anatomy slides and learn something rather than staying in cadaver lab till 9pm and figuring out what the piece of nerve is
