How is matching figured when applying to programs that are match and others that are non-match?

What do you mean "figured"?

To avoid problems with the match, and allow ethics and honestity, we make our acceptance before the match date, before forms are due. This allows those who what to come to our residency to withdraw from the match... no problems.

We are not in the match because we want a blended program
residents from different schools
(this year we have them from Nova, NYU, Penn, Maryland, Temple)
residents who can work together as a team
and we want to take some at all levels of the class ranking

When we were in the match, we once got all from one school and we once got a poor class ranking mixture which lead us not to rank weaker students...

now its working fine without the match

Makes sense to me. Then why are so many programs in the match? wouldn't be to everyone's benefit to get rid of match all together?

Match favors the students in getting their choices.... Non-match favors the programs in getting their choices. With one program being non-match and most programs being match, it allows the non match program to "cherry-pick" by preying on the insecurities of applicants who may be afraid that they won't get in ANYWHERE and are forced to take the sure thing. (I do understand that sometimes a particular nonmatch program may be an applicant's first choice, in this case it works out great for everyone.)

I am a strong believer in match. If both programs and applicants use the system the way it was designed, it works out best for everyone.

Non match is not as good of a system for applicants UNLESS they standardize non match so that the first round of acceptance offers all go out to applicants at the same time, and they have adequate time to make a decision about where they want to go. But since you can't get programs to agree to do this (for the applicants sake), match is the next best thing.

I agree 100% with you, the programs that do not participate in match are doing so to get the best applicants. Fine if a non match program is your first choice, but if you like a match program and get accepted to a non match program early on, it puts you in a tough place.

The non-match programs may lose the resident(s) b/c there is no binding contract…and this is huge risk.

My non-match ortho program lost a resident. Instead of withdrawing from the match, this girl secretly turned in the match and got matched to another program. My program director had to accept a less desirable candidate after the match date. This might have been the reason my program joined the match the following year.

It's funny how a dishonest backstabbing applicant is the "more desirable candidate," makes you wonder. Good riddance.

I did not turn in the match when I was accepted to a non-matched Northwestern ortho program…. and a month after the match date, I got the notice about the dental school closure. If I was dishonest and turned in the match, I would have been matched to my top choice program, NYU ( I knew b/c I talked to the NYU director right after I got the bad news from Northwestern).

I did a year of GPR and reapplied the following year. Thanks God, I got accepted🙂.…also to another non-match program....and I also withdrew from the match the 2nd time.
