Hey! Long time lurker, first time poster here! I have been very fortunate and have been accepted to multiple schools. I have finally narrowed down my choices to two: Mayo and my state school. With only a couple weeks to decide I am COMPLETELY torn and I feel 50/50 at the moment. What would you do??? Thanks for the input! Here's some info:

-run of the mill state school but I do genuinely like the atmosphere, students, and curriculum.
-I am married and my spouse will keep his current job in our state. If I pick Mayo, he will travel monthly and will spend two weeks in Rochester, two weeks in our home state. While in Rochester he will work from home. I am worried about the relationship consequences of being apart. My husband truly does not have a preference, he will support my decision either way.
-family and support network is very important to me. We know NO ONE in Rochester and I will spend two weeks per month in Rochester completely alone.
-I am from the west coast and am used to great, sunny weather. Not pumped for Rochester winters. Didn't think of this as a big deal when I applied, now that the idea of moving to Minnesota is becoming a reality, I am much more worried about it.
- 50% tuition scholarship to Mayo. Tuition would be around $25,000 per year
-tuition for state school would be $28,500/year
-We own a home in our state. Since my husband will be traveling here for work we are going to keep our house and I will have to rent in Rochester. If I choose my state school, I will have NO expenses associated with moving, plane tickets, and renting. This is a big plus to me for my state school. Finances are very important to me.
-Mayo has been my dream school for years. I love the people, values, and opportunity associated with it. If I was not married, I would go there in a second and probably not even consider my state school.
-Not sure what I want to do yet career-wise. At the moment I am very interested in oncology.

IS MAYO WORTH IT???

Mayo is also cheaper than your state school? I think thats an easy choice. The opportunities at Mayo I think will far surpass your state school generally I would think. Congrats on having to make such a choice! Either way you choose I think you'll be ok

You're from the West Coast--are we talking UCSF/UCLA/UW/OHSU? Mayo's a great place but it sounds like any of those four would be better choices for you than Mayo.

None of those I would classify as "run of the mill" state school as OP describes.

How tight are finances to you that staying at your state school is that much more convincing? Being long distance with your spouse would obviously be a big problem but with the 2 weeks there/2 weeks in Rochester deal and his support that seems to help quite a bit.

How strong are the research and opportunities at your state school? I'm sure this school will get the job done for you in terms of securing a position back home in your field of choice, but going to a school like Mayo would could open a ton of doors for you if you might have grander goals in mind.

Mayo is worth it.

And I understand wanting the support system, but it won't be 2 wks/month alone. You will have friends. Don't let your husband be your only support and definitely don't let him prevent you from meeting other- one of the best aspects of Mayo is the networking possibilities!
