Columbia: Applied 1/15, Interviewed 2/7, Accepted 2/21

Super pumped, congrats to everyone. Anyone else coming right from undergrad, my interviewer told me only 15-20% of the class comes right from college.

I am. I'm kind of nervous about that since most people in the program at Columbia are older and have work experience.

Also, check your email about Financial Aid at Columbia and fill out the form!!

Vomhorizon/JQH , thank you for the encouragement. Pretty much about to have a panic attack over here, but your words have given me hope yet. Anyone else care to share their submit/interview dates for Columbia?
Applied 12/1, Sophas sent 12/19, Interviewed 2/5, accepted 2/20

I'm also pretty much coming straight out of undergrad

You mean the survey? I've filled the FAFSA..As per the Power point file that they sent across following the open house..the next step is to fill out the columbia financial aid form for which we would need a student PIN, which columbia has promised to provide us within the next 3-5 days 🙂..

Yeah, the survey.

Yeah, the survey.
i just checked the institutional aid survey form. there is no mention of MHA degree in the form . wonder which degree should we select? and also there was no need for a pin code to fill that form. i was given the option to submit the form after just entering my full name.

I left it blank. This is a survey, the institutional form that requires a pin, is meantioned in my post # 406 above

Congrats to everyone on being accepted to columbia!

Submitted Novemberish, Interviewed 2/6, Accepted 2/21. I am also pretty sure there will be another batch of acceptances after this one

Congrats to everyone who got into Columbia. Does anyone know the MHA class size for Columbia? And when is the deadline to accept the offer?

When did you apply and get the interview invite from VCU? The Georgetown interview was quite chill. Just the regular questions about why MHA, why Georgetown and they did ask me about my GRE scores which were average.

agh sweet. my GTown interview is tomorrow, so that's relaxing to know its chill. Did they give you a tour of the campus or was it just an interview?? and I applied to VCU around Jan 15th and was asked to interview around the beginning of February.

I am considering MHA and some MPHS what is the difference as I see that many jobs still want either?

How long did it take to get your offer from VCU after your interview? I was told by SLU that they want an answer by March 3rd but I don't even interview with VCU until Feb 28th. Is that usual? I still have a few schools I have not heard from, UAB and Texas A&M. Although I really do like the idea of the MBA/MHA at St Louis in only two years. If I could get into a fellowship then that would be like getting a residency with one of the other programs. It all just feels very rushed. And then I just learned that I will have to take a Microeconomics class before SLU and looked on VCUs website and would probably have to take a couple of classes before beginning with them if I were accepted and wanted to attend there.

i'm interviewing with VCU on that date also!

UNC's was really chill. Definitely know why you want to go to UNC, what you're really looking for in a program, etc. At the end you get the opportunity to ask a panel of grad students whatever question you have about the program and they'll be honest with you. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process.

I applied to VCU around Jan. 20th probably and also received notice at the beginning of february to interview on the 28th but I had to postpone it until Mid March because of my schedule/work.

Interviewing with UNC.

Got an email from columbia with another survey, but it keeps asking me about fast food, my eating habbits and resturants...What the heck does that have to do with the level of my financial aid?

I just filled out my survey and it did not contain any of these types of questions. Just my name, program, research interests, and leadership info.

Could you provide a link to the survey please?

I guess they wanted to know how much money you were going to spend on food, LOL. Kidding aside, sounds like a dumb survey.

Ugh just got my financial aid estimate from GW- More like a confirmation that I qualify for the full amount of grad stafford and direct loans. Will probably cross this school off my list...

For any of you wondering about their COA- $55,711 for the 2014-2015 school year.

EDIT: This reflects an annual tuition of $24,750, much less than regular tuition I calculated. COA is so high because room & board is estimated at $23,400 for the year.

Hi all, first time poster but have lurked here for info during my applications cycle. I had completed my applications by early to mid December.

I just interviewed with the University of Minnesota last week. I have outstanding applications @ GW, Johns Hopkins, USC. I have been accepted at Tulane, University of Florida, and University of North Carolina. I have withdrawn from MUSC after an interview invite. I have been rejected at Michigan (I think because I applied too late). Absent a matching offer from Minnesota, it appears as though I will be attending UNC. I loved the campus and the people and felt that it's the right fit for me - I attended undergrad in South Carolina and still live in the south.

I am a boring, plain old white male. My numbers were 3.0 GPA, 151Q (lol)/161V/5.5W. I have four years of tangentially related work experience. I spent tons of time on my personal statement and got very good letters of recommendation. The holistic approach in the application process definitely benefited me. A few thoughts as my cycle is winding down:

1) Spend lots of time on your personal statement. It's obviously very important.

2) Apply early and make the effort to attend interviews in person for places you really want to attend. Applying early is always beneficial, but especially beneficial if you are a borderline candidate.

3) Don't sweat the GRE. It's just a bar to clear, and will not close any doors by itself if you don't kill it.

4) REACH. My raw numbers should have dinged me at some places. They didn't. You are more than your GPA/test scores.

5) If you're not good at interviewing, get good at interviewing. And if you are deficient in an area like finance, prepare to spin that in your interviews.

6) General housekeeping and less interesting - I kept a spreadsheet of everywhere I applied and what they required. EG: how many letters of rec, application fee, app method (SOPHAS/HAMPCAS/Apply direct), etc. There's not really a centralized service so you have to track this stuff yourself, and it blows.

7) If I had to do it over again, I would apply to fewer schools. I applied to 9 total, only a few I would have really considered, but I was worried about getting in anywhere. I would apply to no more than 5, and include 2 reaches and 2 safeties.

8) Make sure your SOPHAS information is totally accurate, otherwise there will be a delay in your submission. Allow plenty of time for transcripts and letters of rec to arrive at SOPHAS.

9) Budget at least $2,000 between application fees and travel costs.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. I'm glad this process is nearing an end. If anyone has any questions for me, feel free to ask!

Oh and one last thing. Everywhere I have interviewed has pushed a joint degree (usually an MHA/MBA) HARD. Since you can (and many do) go directly into consulting work without an MBA I haven't heard a compelling reason for doing so unless you're going for free. 'Making yourself more marketable' doesn't count as 'compelling'.

Quick question -- I'm assuming you only applied to MHA programs... What did the process look like to join the joint degree program?

I totally agree with everything in your first post, especially #s 3, 7, & 9!

I went into the process already not interested so I may not be the best person to ask, but it sounds like you can apply to both simultaneously or you can apply to B school while you're in the MHA program. AKA you don't have to decide to do that right away. But you have to apply to both separately.

Again, though, unless you're going for free I don't really see the point. Just be wary, because another year of tuition + opportunity cost is something to be taken seriously, especially if you're a few years out of undergrad like I am.

Is anyone out there deciding between Columbia and Johns Hopkins. I'm very conflicted about this

Silent treatment from JHU. Not even a hello.

I'm deciding between Columbia and Yale at this point. (Unless UCLA gives me $$$)

Hopkins is definitely still on my radar. Just found out UNC will be notifying about scholarships late March or April. I Emailed Yale about financial aid and they never got back to me womp womp. Love Hopkins' residency and the students I met there were awesome. I might choose UNC over it though for the more in-depth curriculum of a 2-year program (/CH is awesome/the south is awesome/other personal things). Maybe it would be a similar type of decision for you between Hopkins and Columbia? That said, I've really only eliminated one school at this point. Seriously, money is no joke, and if I can get a better deal at one of my schools I just might take it.

@Mha1991 are you in-state for UCLA?

VCU gave me my offer the day I interviewed, but I think they said they only gave 3 offers that day (out of I think 8-10 of us who interviewed). UAB's admissions committee only meets 1x a month if I remember correctly, so it might be the beginning of the next month before you hear. I heard beginning of February (phone call on Friday the 7th).

I haven't been on and didn't see these posts!!! Same story here as M1716, I was accepted the day I interviewed with VCU, and they told me the same thing: That it is a rare thing to receive day of decision from them.

Feel free to reach out to UAB and ask them if you can be informed of a decision regarding your application before the 1x a month they meet. If asked correctly they will respect you for it. I did that, letting them know that I have other acceptances and was working on a decision then the program director called me back and let me know of my acceptance.

I wouldn't let the prereq part bother you because they can accept you pending on your completion of those courses. It only takes a quick may session or summer class to knock them out.

We have really similar schools/situations! Did you apply to UNC?

No not in-state for UCLA but I did apply for a fellowship so that may help. (I'm thinking positive) I'm definitely going to follow the money though. Cornell gave me a measly $2000 in aid. :/

I thought the same thing when I read your post, hahahaha. What day did you interview at VCU and UAB. We might have been in the same interview day! 😀
I did not apply to UNC though.

Same here..Although the interview with Teresa (JHU) went rather well, i may not go unless i get in with $$

Was that institutional aid or from your FAFSA?
