Midwestern 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It took 1- 1.5 months for me to hear back from my interviews even though that they said it took 2 weeks.
that’s so frustrating i guess i’ll just keep my fingers crossed and try not to freak out lol.

So i called yesterday and ask if anyone knew of a timeline when decisions would be out since I had an interview in december and they told me i should hear back mid january. and the person i spoke to on the phone said they had no idea when decisions would be released and it’s up to the admission committee, which is really unfortunate but im really hoping we hear by the end of the month.

How do i prep for this interview. I have it in 2 weeks and I’m nervous. I’ve applied to over 15 schools and this is the only school to offer me an interview. I cannot mess it up. Please help

it was a pretty casual interview 1-2 situational question 3 standard interview questions example: “what is a weakness that you struggle with”
i think it is a bit dependent on who interviews you as there are multiple pairs of 2 that interview students for about 30/45 minutes, that being said no one in my group said they had a negative experience.

^^ they were probably the most conversational interviews I had. My group was also told by both student ambassadors and by some faculty that just about everyone who interviews at least gets waitlisted/put on alternate (although I haven't heard back yet so I can't confirm or deny), and that the waitlist typically moves a lot because midwestern is hardly anyone's first choice (just because it's so expensive). There were some questions that in hindsight I wish I answered differently, but I think that happens to everyone with just about every interview and don't think there was anything else I could've done to prepare.

Not sure if this was already asked but if i have a zoom interview at 8 am and I live in EST so should I plan on that or is it specific to Arizona?

I believe the interview is 8am Arizona time, I think it might specify that on your portal, but I’d double check!

Just curious, is Midwestern the most expensive vet school in US?

I don’t want to sound stupid. Just want to confirm. Does this mean it would then be 10 am my est
Yes! Don’t worry. It’s confusing and better to be sure. I’m in EST and my best friend lives in CST, we talk daily and I mix up regularly whether she’s an hour earlier or later than me.

But at U of A and Mizzou you can establish residency after year 1.
With U of A, I think you can only establish residency if you can prove that you intend to live there after you graduate. When I asked admissions about it, they weren't too sure about how likely it is to establish residency. Regardless though, the three year curriculum already helps make u of a more cost effective!

Wouldn’t it be less cost effective bc it’s more expensive for 3 years versus the same price for 4 years? Idk I think the three year curriculum should 100% cost less than any 4 year program especially without a teaching hospital. (Not U of A specific just in general for those schools that are set up this way)

That one confused me, too, like what would you even do to show you plan to stay there more than the three years you’re in school? Buy a house? What if you got a job elsewhere in the state after graduating?

Doing my last prep for my in person interview this week. For those of you that interviewed in person or at another school. Did you take a purse, note pad in the interview with you, or anything at all? Is it ok to have your questions for them on paper so you don’t forget or should I not do that? Also, any last minute advice or tips would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

My interview was on zoom but one of the admissions people mentioned that a lot of applicants bring in notepads with questions for the interviewers and that its encouraged!

My tip is to be yourself! Don't feel like you have to be ultra-professional, the interviewers want to see your personality. I tried making a few mild jokes during my interview and it made the interviewers laugh and not only did it help calm me down but it also made the whole interview feel like a friendly conversation. You should still maintain some professionalism but you don't want the interview to sound stale. Be memorable!

All it says it awaiting decision
I am also in the same boat. I wish they would communicate with us. I emailed them asking if the status was correct and when to expect to hear back from them potentially. The response that I got just said my status was correct. I haven't heard anything since.):

I'm sorry, I might have not been too clear on what I was trying to say. U of A is about $76,484 for the tuition and for three years, it comes out to be about $230,000 (excluding cost of living, loan fees, etc). You are also able to begin working as a veterinarian sooner compared to MWU which helps make it more cost effective in the long run. So yes, MWU is less expensive in terms of yearly tuition ($72,831) but it seems like the more expensive option when you consider you will be in school for four years ($291,324 - excluding rent and other). This is just how I compared the two tuitions assuming you may not be able to establish residency at U of A. Therefore, U of A may be the more cost effective option.
I agree with you though - any school without a teaching hospital should definitely cost less! Let me know your thoughts!

I was told that one way to prove that you plan on staying in Arizona post-graduation is to change your drivers license, register your car in Arizona, update address, file taxes, etc. It's pretty simple, but when I spoke with admissions during a tour, they said that the financial aid office would have more current information on establishing residency. I haven't had a chance to speak with them just yet about it.

I emailed them and they just told me that my status hasn’t changed and that they will let me know when it does…

Just got my decision - december interviews, check you portals. Alternate list for me (alternate list isn't ranked just FYI)

Does everyone who was waitlisted have the pre-requisite chart now? I think that is different than those waitlisted before?

I have the prerequisite chart. I’m going to upload an unofficial transcript when I get the chance since I did my last prereq this past semester, but I don’t know if they’ll update it since it’s not official.

Interviewed 12/3. Just got my acceptance letter. 🙂 got rejected from another school this morning so I feel a little better now. Worried about cost but hey I applied and I knew what I was getting into. Still waiting on my in state! Good luck to everyone else still waiting or on waitlist.
