Midwestern University c/o 2018 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations Klebis! Wooooot!! I'm so excited to be going to Midwestern too!! My interview was Friday 2/21 and found out I was accepeted Tuesday the 25th! I have two bigger dogs. I want to know if its more affordable to live off campus and commute, or apply for on-campus pet friendly apartments. I wonder if the area has pet friendly housing near the campus, with yards? Idk... uugh the deposit is so much 🙁 idk how to come up with the money...

yeah, the deposit is a lot...but nothing compared to the ridiculous tuition. Here's to being broke forever!

Hey everyone! I have an interview for midwestern coming up and was wondering what the interviews were like? how long? Someone posted they basically reviewed their application. Is that the case? Just looking for help on what to focus in on! Thanks 🙂

When is your interview socalDVM? The interview is relaxed. Half the day is spent touring the school and the other half waiting for the interview. The faculty come in and try to relax you a bit by talking to you. The interview itself is about 20 minutes. The questions are not too bad and pretty standard. They make it a point to just get to know you in the interview. Good luck! I wish you the best.

The website says they are still scheduling for interviews through the end of this month. If the class has been fully offered and there is a wait list, am I missing something?

Where on their website did you see they are still having interviews?

I know a friend interviewing later and neither her or I (wait listed) are 100 percent clear on rolling admissions as people start declining their seats. Also, not an easy decision for her as she would be flying there and is not sure if its not just "courtesy interviews"?

I'm wait listed too and I don't what the process is. Kind of worries even more so now that they are doing more interviews. I'm going crazy!

I interviewed in February and, from what I remember, our tour guide said they were interviewing until the end of March. I think they are still accepting the 3-4 per 12 of interviewees like someone mentioned before. I was accepted in my group but I dont know if any else were, I'm assuming a few were. I dont think they would ever make people fly out there for just a courtesy interview.

thanks so much for the heads up @thisisitdvm ! My interview is march 25th. Guess it's the last of the interviews! yikes…

im excited to meet everyone as well 🙂
does anyone have housing set in stone for next year yet?
its hard coming from so far away to find affordable furnished apartments!
Did you end up learning more about this? I am also coming from far away, but just submitted an app for on-campus housing. Curious if there is any chance of still getting it at this point

I have applied for on campus housing. Still waiting to hear back, but I don't think the apartments are furnished... I am coming from Colorado so it won't be too horrible to have to move furniture etc.
I just applied... have you heard anything yet about if there is still housing available?

I applied several months ago. All I was told was that they make assignments in mid march. I called today but had to leave a message. Still have not heard anything.

Out of curiosity, are any of you guys picking MWU over another US vet school?

I applied to Midwestern and MSU (which is my instate) and I have been accepted into both. I am still trying to decide which one I am going to pick

I got accepted into Midwestern and Western and have decided to go to Midwestern - both are private colleges, so tuition was roughly the same for me

There were several factors that made me decide on Midwestern:
Cost of living: from my visit for the interviews and a cursory search for apartments, Midwestern was a lot cheaper
Environment and Weather: Aside from summer, AZ has almost perfect weather year round
Curriculum: From what I hear, Western was pure PBL whereas Midwestern appears to be hybrid which suits me better
Academic system: Western=Semester, Midwestern=Quarter - I've been on the quarter system since freshman high school and I HATE how slow semesters are.
Dedicated facilities: Midwestern is going to have brand spanking new buildings, equipment, and etc.
Etc. etc. etc. your miles may vary on your personal situation/school

Just do be mindful that as a new school, Midwestern still has a few kinks to work out. If you look at Western's statistics (the last new school) their first graduating class only had a 78% pass rate for the boards - which steadily rose each year to around 97% or so last year, which is actually one of the highest among the vet schools. Don't even worry about accreditation as it's really not that big a deal (for comparison, UC Davis lost theirs a few years back) - as long as you graduate you're going to be allowed to take the boards <-- this is the stickler for me as I look at Western's first class statistics... but the majority did pass 😀

If I got into my instate though.. (UC Davis) that's what I would've picked - not even because of its reputation, but simply because the tuition is almost HALF that of Midwestern... sigh... I'm looking at a mountain of debt when I graduate D:

How much is the tuition at midwestern and what is their estimated COA? I googled it but can't seem to find it anywhere surprisingly..

Out of curiosity, are any of you guys picking MWU over another US vet school?

I also got in to other US schools. I didn't get in to my instate (Florida), or I would have chosen that. I did get in to three other US schools (you can pm me if you're curious which) yet I chose MWU for a myriad of reasons, mainly for two big ones:

1. my significant other works at intel and can easily transfer to the Phoenix office-a non-possibility at other schools.

2. (The main reason) I think a new school, while a little scary with some uncertainties, offers a lot that an established school doesn't. New facilities, a faculty completely dedicated to the charter class, lots of emphasis on one-health/client education & interaction, lots of leadership opportunities for the class-and a lot of power to mold clubs/extra-curriculars into what you want them to be.

Then there's the weather...the cost, in my opinion, offsets how desirable that is. Oh well! I'm excited! And I think the majority of this charter class chose MWU as a competitive option, and not their only choice🙂.

I just feel like I should put my two cents on here about those thinking about attending a new school if you have other choices. Not saying there is a right or wrong answer here... but I really cannot imagine going in blind on my first day with no help or guidance from the other classes. The class ahead of us has been SO helpful in more ways than you all may realize in us getting settled in, letting us know what books are needed vs. which aren't, how to study for certain classes, how to deal with certain teachers... and more. Each new block I always message my big (from the next class up- we have the big/little program here and it's great) and ask her about any new classes so I kind of know what to expect. For me, personally, there is just too many unknowns going into a brand new school just for this reason alone (not to mention a lot more, but that isn't what I came here to post about). I just wanted to give some insight on that if it helps anyone in their decision.

Does anyone how classes are going to be?... typical lectures? audio and visually recorded? mandatory?

Woah, there. Accreditation is HUGE. If this school does not get accreditation (though I'm sure it will), you can't just sit for boards. You have to take the PAVE or some other ridiculously difficult test for which I cannot remember the acronym. These tests are expensive, difficult, and span multiple days. You will have to tread through high water if MWU doesn't get accreditation. Graduating from MWU with no accreditation is no different than graduating from St Matthews or any other school that lacks accreditation.

I don't think Davis ever lost its accreditation.

According to what I've read on accreditation as well as from the Midwestern interview (it was a question that was expected 😀), you don't have to take any additional tests to sit for the boards so long as you graduate - limited accreditation is NOT the same thing as non-accredited. On the flipside, many 2nd year students (at least from Western) do take the PAVE before entering their 3rd year to see how well their clinical know-how are. Perhaps I should've clarified that I meant you didn't have to worry about the limited accreditation and that no one should go to a non-accreditation school, but this isn't currently a huge factor when considering Midwestern at the moment.

If Midwestern ever does fail to attain accreditation, it is their duty according to the AVMA to stop enrolling new students BUT to continue to finish educating currently enrolled students. Regardless, Midwestern won't be able to obtain their full accreditation anyways until AVMA is able to see how their charter class fares on the boards - I would think that implies they're able to take it - being able to pass it or not would be another matter altogether though...

And UC Davis did lose its full accreditation in 1998 and regained it in 2005... (for having poor facilities) does that mean all the classes that graduated between those years had to take additional exams and fees? That would suck :\

All of this can be found on the AVMA website 😀

Small world! I go to UCD now and ALSO got into MWU 🙂 I look forward to meeting you!

Considering the limited amount of vet schools and their relative out of state acceptance rates... the world is actually quite small 😛

But go Aggies! 😀

Nope, not for the charter class.

They made it pretty clear at MWU that even if the school somehow fails to obtain accreditation, the charter class will have no additional hoops to jump through upon graduation.

This was asked on my tour. The school does not provide any form of recording. What the tour guide said was that they encourage students to record and publish it on a blackboard like website.

I asked this at the end of my interview and they said that lectures would be made available online for us. Sounds like there's some conflicting information..

Hope your interviews went well 🙂

Thanks @SoloPolo! It went very well. I'm very pleased with the campus, the faculty, and the program. They said the remainder of the applicants that interviewed this week will find out by end of next week at the latest.

So how many of you are living on campus vs. off campus? I can't decide what I want to do!

I'm going to live on campus for my first year! 😀

After reading some reviews on some of the cheaper apartments around the Glendale area, I became a little reluctant to sign a lease without being able to look around the area first (i'm from CA). There were lots of complaints about gangs, drugs, and poor facilities - not sure if they're just nonsense from unhappy renters or truth, but it's something to consider - especially if I'm going to sign the lease blind.

That and I wanted to bring my dog (lab) along, and lots of apartments had weight limits (35pounds or less).

Another factor was the cost - the differences wasn't that big once you factored all the bills - and being able to live on dorms with everything except electricity paid for... for only just a little more, that's not too shabby - plus get to save on gas and sleep in a little 😀

Might move off campus after the 1st year with some of you guys if we get along to save on costs, but definitely dorms for the 1st year!

By the by, apartments are being assigned right now and I just got mine - better sign up soon if you want to live on campus!

Just turned in my priority waitlist agreement for San Lagos Apartments which is literally right across the street from school!

I'm wanting to live off campus and rent a house. I have a dog and really want a yard for him. Plus if I can find a roommate or two it will be much cheaper than an apartment. The only scarey part is most houses that are up for rent, are for rent right now, so I'm going to have a wait a bit to actually sign a lease.

When I was in gross lab (MS I here) last quarter, I overheard some of the faculty talking about the rather unsavory business of hanging a horse carcass in the your labs; needless to say, several godfather references followed from some students. I think you vet students will have fun, gl 🙂.

I will be living off campus as well, with my husband. (wow crazy to say that 🙂 we are getting married this July!) What is the priority wait list agreement for the San Lagos Apartments and how do you sign up? That was one of the apartments we were considering since it's so close to campus.

Congrats on the wedding Hokielaluna! That's exciting! The waitlist agreement is just a short form you fill out that includes your preferences (which model you want, view preference, pet friendly etc.). Once you've turned one in, along with a $100 deposit, they put you on a list and call you when a unit becomes available. The leasing consultant said that it gets really busy over the summer and usually fills up fast so now would be a good time to turn in that form if you're looking to move in July/August. I filled it out when I visited and looked at their model apts., but I'm sure you can also email them and ask them to send it to you. Good luck! Maybe we'll be neighbors next year! 🙂

Thanks so much Sadie26! I will definitely give the apartment complex a call this week and try to get placed on the wait list.

Hokie, are you bringing your horse? He's really cute! What is his breeding?

Any wait listers have any news? What I learned is last week concluded interviews and they would decide on those yesterday at the soonest. The wait list is reordered to include new wait listers based on a numerical score each applicant is given. 2 weeks ago, 60 of 100 spots were confirmed with a deposit, but of course, April 15th is still 2 weeks away!

Thanks! I'm not able to bring her as she tore her deep digital flexor tendon last year and we had to put her down. Saddest day of my life. She was a great horse, every show we took her to people would also ask about her breeding, she is actually a percheron - saddlebred cross, her dad was as tri-color saddlebred so that is where she gets her color from. I really want to find a hunter/jumper barn to ride at while i'm out there- your horse is really cute to! Do you event?

@Fly Racing I had my interview last Wednesday and was told that the last round of interviewees will know their status by the end of this week at the latest. Also I was told by Krista, the counselor, that the school admits students up until the first week of class. Hope this information was somewhat helpful.

@Flyracing- I saw your post yesterday and called admissions, as of yesterday 80 deposits made but she said that can change drastically either increase or decrease. They just don't know what to expect. She couldn't tell me how many more were on the waitlist. I'm waiting to hear from Midwestern (#1 choice) otherwise I leave for Ross in May! Really cutting it close here. Any clue as to how soon after the 15th, we will hear something? I wish we could know our numbers. Wish everyone the best of luck on the alternate list!
