MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will be 29 at fall 2019 🙂 don't feel disappointed at all!
I applied early-ish so I heard back from GW pretty quickly (10 days). @Nb30 is probably right about the reason for the delay!

Looking at all the posts on the GW admitted students FB group has me feeling old lol. Anyone else who’s not a clinician heading back to school after a long gap? I’ll be 27 by the time I start!

I'll also be 27 going in. Changing from an HR career to public health. It's a little scary to start over later in the game, but hopefully it's worth it!

Even though I'll be turning 24 once classes begin, I've been out of school for a couple of years and I'm worried about going back to school after working various jobs since I graduated in 2017. After going through two whole years of no essays, exams, and group projects and to go back to them this fall, is both exciting, yet nervewracking! Two years may not seem like a long time but it feels like forever! 😛

I feel exactly the same way. I'm in the middle of my second gap year, (I spent the first one unsuccessfully applying to med school) and I decided to change directions a bit to public health. I'll be 25 a couple months after starting. I'm a little worried, but even more excited!

I don't think that is abnormal. I will be 26 when I start. Stayed working longer than I originally planned, jumping different positions in public health, testing the waters in different functions (research, health education, community health).

26 shortly after I start too! #GrownPeopleTingsssss

Exactly! The disappointing side of the majority of universities policy regarding scholarships is that there is no significant difference between 290 and even something near 328 in GRE! (except for a few universities such as the GW that has different levels of scholarships from 7500$ to 70000$)
The majority of top schools like Harvard, Columbia, JHU, UNC--which allocate more budget compared to lower ranks--only focus on +330 as I’ve reviewed previous years threads.

Do you think schools don’t care about the writing sections? Using your scoring method I have a 331, but my writing was only 59th percentile. So I’m thinking I won’t qualify for a scholarship at Columbia. I got a pretty low offer from BU (only $20,000) and the standard 75% off the second year at JHU.

For those that have been admitted to GWU, have you guys filled out CSS? I have not and I feel like I won't get financial aid or academic aid anyways. Plus, it's like filling out FAFSA all over again with the $25 fee on top of it.

Is financial aid offered much at the graduate level? I read something that mentioned how grad. financial aid is mostly loans or merit aid if you qualify :/

Hey man. Congrats. That's extraordinary to hear from them as early. I am applying to the same program (part-time MPH-Epi). Wondering on what do you mean by "very limited target of students"?. My credentials are not as good as yours (M.D., 20 Pubmed publications, 200 citations, 1 year postdoc research fellow, ECFMG certified). I am very optimistic now reading about your acceptance. You never know, we might end up joining the same class.
I think the program is mainly for physicians and advanced medical practitioners who are interested in part-time study, (i.e. not for medical students).
I believe that you have excellent credentials. I wish to meet you at Harvard soon.

Does anyone know if the financial aid offered based on FAFSA is equivalent to the amount I have received for undergrad? or is it much less for grad programs?

Dear acn2019
I have asked them 3 times, and they continuously told me that the cut-offs are strict, and they can't do anything
(I’m 8 point over 80th in quant and only 3point lower 80th in verbal, but they don't look at scores in this way!)
however, I think your scores not only are amazing, but also they are almost parrarel and as the universities have shown their preference to something like 165-165 over 170-160, I hope their scholarships committee become impressed by your stats. Fingers crossed!

I was accepted to the Tufts MPH program on January 11th! I applied on 11/29 and my application was complete on 12/5.
Congratulations! Are you also applying for the combined degree?
XD I submitted my application on 1/13..... really should be more patient

Does anyone have thoughts on the MS global health program at UCSF? I'm having a really hard time deciding between that and BU MPH in terms of what's best for my career. I essentially want to go into global underserved health/medicine but not sure what degree would be most practical? I'm planning to go to medical school and specialize in neurology a few years after finishing the PH degree, but with my current GPA i'm not sure how realistic that will be, so I'm trying to keep that in mind in deciding.

Any help/thoughts would be really appreciated! Thanks 🙂

I feel so undecided and worried, although I have heard from 7 out of 14 universities which I’ve applied. These months are going to be my most challenging ones so far! While I’m waiting for hearing from JHU, UNC, Harvard, etc., my biggest concern is merit-based scholarships from previous accepted programs, without which I cannot afford or even survive the 2-years tuition and living expenses. What do you think guys? How much chance do I have for scholarships? What is happening in your mind these days? Receiving More acceptances or Scholarships? 🙂
Receiving scholarships, that's what's most on my mind. I wish I had the guts and funds to apply to 14 schools. Sounds like a lot. I applied to four schools and have been accepted on there so far. Yet to get any funding decisions

It’s mostly based on the cost of attendance at each school and what each school is offering you for merit/ need-based aid. There’s no pell grants or things like that coming directly from FAFSA. You’ll most likely get offered a larger loan (mine was $20,000) a year due to the fact that they really don’t use your parents financial info to assess what you can contribute to your education, at least for me they didn’t.

I'm currently looking through financial aid pages on schools' websites.

For JHU - has anyone received a SIS ID to complete the "Public Health Student Aid Application?"

Here's the link for more info: Application Procedures

Does anyone have thoughts on the MS global health program at UCSF? I'm having a really hard time deciding between that and BU MPH in terms of what's best for my career.

There has been a proliferation of global health concentrations at public health schools, however it doesn't seem that the jobs are necessarily there with just an MPH with just a global health concentration. There was a research article not long ago that looked at the huge number of global health programs, and the job market, basically saying that degree seekers in global health programs should be forewarned that the job market might not be there.

Going the nursing/medical route to global health would be beneficial as you'd actually have concrete skills to do something, also social work might be useful, though there are a host of other experts involved in global health, such as epidemiologist, logistical experts and others, in my opinion the MPH in global health is a generalist degree that is disadvantaged when compared to somebody that has concrete skills in a specialized area. Global health courses are probably fun, but you can learn most or all of that just by light reading of global health books and articles in general, people are most concerned about hard skills.

Look at the jobs of people doing what you want to do in global health, see what degree and experience you need. I think it is hard to go into getting an MPH without a clear idea of how it will benefit your career or even what job you will want. If there is a job, for example, that needs a person with an advanced degree in civil engineering or water systems in a developing context, then having a global health degree won't work. Global health work is probably getting more specialized, but public health schools keep them as they sound good and people with just a generalist idea apply for them and they bring in money for the school.

For a lot of people, the MPH is an add-on degree that is obtained after years of work in nursing, for example, and so there is that perspective going into it. Even so, you don't even need an MPH to be a public health nurse if you are a nurse (and your employer might pay for an MPH if you want one). Most people doing stuff that is public health might not even have an MPH, you have clinicians, scientists and experts with other degrees like an MS in Biostats. I think that eventually the generalist MPH in global health might not exist in the future, you can already get a BS in public health, from there the next step would probably be an MS in Epidemiology or Biostats or something more focused.

I'll be 23 when I start and would be coming in 6 months after wrapping up undergrad, so a little inexperienced but hoping to learn from all of you as well. Hope to see y'all at Admitted Students Day!

I was really disappointed that they required this, the process went way too deep. I submitted it but haven't gotten any confirmation it was received and emails to the fin aid office go unanswered.

Anyone waiting on JHU MPH decisions?
I received the congratulations, it’s sent for review on Jan 8th but nothing else so far. The login drill has stretched my patience too much. T_T

Received that same email on November 29th and i'm still waiting, so don't hold your breath! They say that they take 8-10 weeks to send decisions, and each program does things their own way.

Just sharing the correct Cornell MPH decision timeline. I inquired about this and had it confirmed, and was also told that my application was not selected during its first review in December, but that it will be reviewed again in the next round. It sounds like you can expect to hear back on an exact day.

Has anyone heard from UW epi yet? Last year they sent out decisions this week

Thankyou. Here’s to hoping for a positive decision soon enough!

I imagine we will hear this week! I got an email a couple of weeks ago inviting me to apply for a scholarship. It said you could apply before or after you find out if you got in and the essay is due 2/4. Given that, I expect to hear before 2/4!

I got an acceptance to UW's Genetic Epi MS program a few days ago, as well as the invitation to apply for a scholarship. Genetic Epi is in the Public Health Genetics department, though, and I bet they have far less applicants to sort through. Hopefully you will hear soon!

Regarding CSS Profiles- If we didn't need to do a CSS Profile for undergrad, would we be creating a new account for grad schools? Or would we use the same College Board account as we did in high school for the SATs and AP Tests? Apologies if this is a repeated question, but I am very confused!

Hello,

I know I am late to the game. I just wanted some help in gauging the competitiveness of my application for MPH programs related to healthcare management. Here are my stats:

University: Top 20 Public University
Major: Neuroscience
Minors: 1. Philosophy 2. Science, Technology, & Law
GPA: 3.81/3.84
GRE: 156 V (78%) 155 Q (58%) 5.0 A (92%)

Experiences/Achievements:

-Honors College Student
-2 Grant/Scholarships Recipient
-Several years working during my undergrad as a medical assistant/healthcare administrative intern at a private practice
-Involvement in multiple on-campus organizations/held several leadership positions
-Part-time employee of on-campus academic resources center
-Business/Leadership Study Abroad during the Winter in Europe
-NO Research!! (Is this going to hinder my chances even though I am interested in business oriented MPH vs fields such as epidemiology)

Special Factors:

-Will be fresh out college
-First person in family to pursue graduate school (is this even thaaaat special?? idk)

Recs:

Clinical Director at private practice
Global Ethics/Biomedical Ethics Professor
Advisor for Leadership Position on Campus

Applied: Boston U (HCM), Yale (HCM), UVA (MPH in Bioethics) ALL 1/15
Accepted:
Rejected:

My biggest concerns are my lack of any undergraduate research and my young age as well as my pretty average GRE scores. I don't know if I am being realistic with my applications so TELL IT TO ME STRAIGHT. Will my high analytical score compensate a little for my lower quant/verbal?

Yale is my dream school pending being able to afford it so what do you think are my chances of gaining admission? I also applied to Boston U after the priority deadline so technically I will be considered for rolling/if space is available.

So I'm not applying to BU, but from what I've seen on this thread (as well as from their website), it seems to me like your # stats would be competitive with for admission. I think there have been some people who were accepted without a lot of research experience, as well.

Your GPA and GRE scores are awesome btw!

Hi! I got into BU with a GRE a little lower, about the same GPA, and from a business major background. I think you'll be competitive for BU! They also gave me some $ but I think you'll be fine!

This morning I noticed that the status in my online portal changed to admittted! :heckyeah:Still waiting on an official email though!
