MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just accepted to Johns Hopkins full time MPH!!

Kind of shocked because my third letter of recommendation hasn't even been submitted yet, so I'm really hoping they didn't make a mistake somehow...:nailbiting:. For anyone who's curious, I submitted my app 10/28, it was verified 11/6, and I got an email on 11/7 saying it had been sent for review.

Does anyone know if for Berkeley's grad division application we have to send our GRE scores to the 8433 code in addition to the SPH code (4227)? Their web page makes it seem like we don't have to send to both but I want to be safe.

I've emailed the sphadmissions email to ask but they haven't gotten back and it's creepin up to the Dec. 1 deadline, so I'm thinking of calling tomorrow or Monday to confirm...

Hey all! Just a quick note on 2 things:

1. Emory last year got back to some people relatively early and some really late. Their communication was also lackluster regarding application status, and due to that I had almost written them off. After getting admitted with a scholarship, I decided to give them another chance and everything has been perfectly smooth sailing since! Don't get disheartened by this early response.

2. Last year, JH got back to full-time MPH people WAY earlier than MSPH people. So don't let it get to you-- it just really depends on the program!

If you haven't already, looking back on threads from last year can be really helpful when trying to gauge what to expect for timelines! My signature also tells my story-- all my apps were submitted in October!

The MPH program is school-wide, so I didn't apply to a specific department. I did indicate a preference for a social and behavioral sciences concentration, but I think all the MPH applications are reviewed by the same committee regardless. Hopefully you'll hear back soon! Good luck!

Thanks, I got the email this morning! Accepted!! I’m still nervous about the cost, but I am SO happy.

Hey, everyone. A long-time lurker finally posting. Good luck to everyone and congratulations to those already accepted!

Undergrad School: University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign
Undergrad GPA: 3.72 SOPHAS verified
Major: Community Health - Administration and Planning
GRE: V: 158 (80%), Q: 151 (42%) W: 5.0 (92%) (This was my 2nd and final attempt - that quant score still bums me out, though)

Experience/Research (please, be brief):
- Currently serving 1 year as an AmeriCorps VISTA Community Health worker at a free clinic
- 5 months Community Health Educator at local health dept. (temporary position - facilitated evidence-based teen STI/pregnancy prevention program in health classes at a high school with significantly higher rates of pregnancy and STIs in the county)
- 1 year Health Research Assistant with patient outcomes research group

- 1 undergrad winter internship at a health advocacy nonprofit

Johns Hopkins - MSPH in International Health: Health Systems - Applied 11/20 - SOPHAS verified 11/21
GWU - MPH in GH Program Design, Monitoring, & Evaluation - Applied 11/20 - SOPHAS verified 11/21
University of Illinois Chicago - MPH in Community Health Sciences: Global Health track - Applied 11/20 - SOPHAS verified 11/21

Waitlisted:

Originally had Columbia, UCLA, and Tulane on my application list, but decided not to apply for various reasons and cut down to 4 schools. Emory's program is, by far, my first choice (should I be accepted and work out the financials). My lower GRE quant score makes me nervous, but I'm hoping that, holistically, I still have a decent shot. Will update as decisions come in!

If you haven't already, looking back on threads from last year can be really helpful when trying to gauge what to expect for timelines! My signature also tells my story-- all my apps were submitted in October!

I’ve read the entire 2018 thread at least 3 times now. Crazy! Made notes on all the people with stats and interests closest to mine - to try and gauge my chances! (And stil can’t say I feel any comfort. Lol). Started feeling emotionally invested in the ups and downs of some of last year’s frequent posters and hope things are going well for all of them. @Cassatrass you were one of my idols! Hoping my application process is as successful as yours was.
Question for you, if you remember. My apps were verified a few weeks ago now. I’ve received 2 emails from Yale since then. First saying they’d received my application. Second saying my application was complete. But it also says that they expect to release admission decisions in early March! But I remember that many people heard back from Yale by the end of January last year. So I was surprised that it said March. Do you remember the time frame given in “application complete” emails last year?
Reading last year’s thread has been incredibly helpful to me outside of trying to gauge my chances. Not being from USA I was less familiar with the entire range of programs. In the end, 3 of the 4 MPH programs I applied to were because I learned about them in this forum. I’ve also private messaged a few of last year’s posters and have really appreciated their input. So definitely one very grateful reader here!

Awe that's so kind! I hope that it goes smoothly for you also! They didn't give me a timeline in any of the initial emails, but I emailed them back and asked (I was impatient haha) and they said they review applications December through March!

Is anyone applying to the University of Maryland by the way? I can try and answer some questions about the school or campus in general

Hi, I applied to UMD. Curious to hear your perspective/experience. I'm worried about the out-of-state tuition cost. Beyond my research on faculty/department, my knowledge of the campus/city is limited.

So I'm currently a undergrad (graduating in December) but have worked extensively with faculty within the School of Public Health on various research projects. I can say from working with some of the graduate students within the Environmental Health department that they are always kept busy (so many papers and meetings and whatnot) and my mentor specifically groomed the undergrad interns for grad school and beyond. As for the campus itself, it's fairly large so you'll get your fair share of exercise in and it's always bustling and you're within close proximity to Washington DC so there are plenty of opportunities and partnerships with neighboring communities. College Park is basically a college town but we have many collaborative projects with nearby areas throughout the county

What field specifically are you applying for by the way?

UMD doesn't have as much funding as other schools like George Washington by the way. At least that's what my mentor told me.

Congrats! Also accepted to UMD for Environmental Health Sciences
Oh wow, looking like a small world out here haha

If you choose to enroll at UMD, then you'll definitely be able to engage in the technical aspect of the field (i.e. using pollutant sensors and field work) since the department is in the process of getting the latest devices.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk more!

Hey everyone! So I just took my second GRE test on November 20th and I had a much better score than the first time, but some of my intended programs deadline are on December 1st (UCLA and Columbia) and I'm not sure if I'm able to submit my better grades on time. Anyone knows if I can send my GRE score even after I submit my application? Thanks!

As far as I know, you can submit your GRE scores after you submit your application as long as they were taken before Dec 1 and have been sent to the school before Dec 1. If it takes a few days to get to the school (e.g. it arrives on Dec 4 but you sent it to them on Nov 29) it's fine.

I asked my schools about this because I took the test on the 21st and that was their response. I'd suggest calling if you're super worried about it, though.

I just received an email from the University of Michigan asking me to create my student portal. It said that they will begin to review my application once it is complete in the portal (which it is). Does this mean I will hear back about a decision soon? Those of you who have applied in previous years, what did the timeline look like from here on out?

Thanks!

How long did it take to receive this email after your application was SOPHAS verified? My application was verified on 11/13 and I still haven't received this email, so I'm trying to decide if I should contact them.

Thank you!

I'm with you on that! Waiting on a few schools but all report decisions from January - early March so nothing to do but wait and hope for the best!

Seems you and I are in the same boat! From what I've seen on this forum and the older ones, wherever you feel like you're lacking in stats, it's possible to make up for in a great personal statement and good letters of reccomendation. You should be solid given that your experience is good! All the best!

Thank you for all your posts! It's been helpful to read about people's different timelines.

Has anyone heard back from the Online/Part-Time MPH at JHU? Maybe they don't decide as quickly for this track as they do on the Full-time MPH. I applied on 10/28 and received a confirmation email from JHU admissions on 11/1 that my application was complete.

Got an email of acceptance to GWU for Health Policy!
God is good!

Not that I get any pleasure from anyones anxiety haha but I admit its conforting knowing I'm not the only one and that we're all going through this together. I really apreciate everyone's comment in this forum it has definitely made the process easier. Hope everyone gets the program they want, good luck guys.

Not to mention the constant bombardment of emails from the programs.... I know decisions take time to come out, but every time I get an email my heart does a little jump until I realize it's another "why you should apply" email!

Hey everyone!
Quick question:

I submitted 4 LORs to SOPHAS: 2 academic and 2 professional. Some colleges require 2 LORs while others require 3.

Of the 4 LORs, 3 are more pertinent since they are recent, while one LOR is from an internship mentor from 2 years ago. I don't want colleges to end up looking at the wrong 2 or 3.
Should I specify which all LORs I would like them to look at?
What should I do?

I debated about requesting 4 letters and how this would be viewed, Emory was the most strict in the sense they told me they would only read the the first 3 that were uploaded by your recommenders.

I would recommend reaching out to your schools and seeing what their stance is and if they'd be willing to hear you out on which to read. Although, I'm not 100% they would read the exact ones you propose.

I finally got an email acknowledging my application to Emory! It was pretty thorough telling me what needs to be done in OPUS, however, I have to wait 24-48 hours for my OPUS account to be active.

Same here, got an email from Emory prompting me to setup my account through OPUS

I'm also applying for epi in UT! But I applied to Houston. What made you choose Austin?
I like the Austin area much better, and I am trying to coordinate as best I can with my partner. He will be applying for software engineering jobs, and a lot of companies have offices out of Austin. It's got a cool vibe in my opinion!
