MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
SOS my friends! About the quoted Fellowship, I asked them that as I’m an international student, should I pay the Nonresident supplemental tuition? And here is their answer:

”The Department’s fellowship provides support for standard tuition, fees and health insurance for the first year. Nonresident Supplemental Tuition is not included. It may be possible to secure an undergraduate teaching position in the first year which provides fee remissions benefits. In this case, the Department can consider a request to transfer the fellowship to cover NRST in the term of the appointment.”

I don’t understand the exact meaning of the last sentence. I will appreciate if you translate this for me 🙂 Does it mean that if I obtain a TA position for undergrads, the NSRT will be waived? Or decreased? Or...?

I believe what it means is that if you got a TA position (with a certain appointment percentage--you would need to check the website), it would cover the resident portion of your tuition. Then, since the resident portion is already being covered, the department would shift the fellowship to cover the non-resident portion instead, therefore covering your entire tuition cost.

Yes, I got it! Thanks a lot!
Until now, It seems that I should decide between JHU(~70k), UMN (~48k), and UCLA (0 to 48k)! Tough decision! It would be harder if accepted to Harvard SM1(~62k)! However, my heart beats for UMN! 🙂

Not to be obsessively anxious but...does anyone else’s Harvard portal have “employee” in the url?

LOL YES. And if you go on over to the administrative access portal and tab to "self service" there's a "Chan Admissions Letter" that's blank. Yes I have been obsessively refreshing things.
Oh man I did not notice that until now

Hey everyone, I got some intel for Harvard’s admissions. My friend is an SM student there and she said they are done reviewing according to her advisor. But, they got more applicants this year. She said they are sending in batches. Ugh I’m so nervous! I got into my first choice but am still so fidgety over harvard

Now that’s a good friend. I’ve got my fingers crossed that happens soon...really soon...

Can you PM me what this looks like? I can’t find that anywhere?!!

I applied for HSB. If you’re only checking 2x a day you’re handling this wait way better than I am haha. I refresh way too many times an hour. Might enroll in midday yoga to calm the nerves if I don’t hear back tomorrow lolol.
Hahaha I was way worse before I got into my top school. The waiting ruined my mental health last semester so I'm trying to control myself and just remember I got into a phenomenal program and keep going 🙂 you got this!

I'm going crazy waiting for UCLA and SDSU!

Given my stats, I feel like I'm almost 100% going to be rejected from UCLA, and I want to know why they are dragging their feet about it. But maybe that's just my anxiety getting the best of me...

My portal doesn’t look like that at all🙁 maybe this means you are getting your decision soon! I also applied for an SM in Epi so unsure if that matters portal wise Lol.

Mine didn't either, but try googling it (see above) and then you'll see it's the same portal!

Does anyone know if financial aid decisions go out with Harvard acceptance letters, orwill they be separate?

For those who got accepted at UMich for HBHE, has anyone received any financial aid notices? I was checking my portal and noticed they gave me work study and basically just the unsub fed loan for the rest of the cost, but I never received an actual award notice so I am not sure if that's the official summary?

oooooohhhh interesting! can I ask where you saw this? I haven't actually checked my portal since I found out I was accepted. I assumed all schools would email when finaid "awards" were posted/released.

Weirdly, when I checked my admin portal just now I have a bunch of different folders than the ones in your screenshot. Does anyone else have folders called "Maintain Relationship Data", "Academic Planning", "Enrollment", "Campus Finances", etc?

Lol I need a hobby......
i don't have that but i have stuff about name recording?

I am from the Northeast, now living in Boston. I am going to have a big decision to make in terms of choosing an MPH program. Part of me wants to stay in Boston (and go to BU or Harvard (if accepted)) because I have my network here, job, friends, close to home, etc. and Boston is an incredible hub for public health. On the other hand, I really am attracted to the idea of going out to Oregon because of geography, trying something new, etc. Just wondering- anyone who has gone through your MPH program (if at any of these places, thats a bonus!), could you give me some insight as to how important it is to go to a "ranked" program? What are your opinions on staying vs. leaving? Pros/cons?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on all your acceptances!! 🙂 I have a similar dilemma with choosing schools (one close to home, one in a new place), but I honestly think that either school I go to will be fine. Many people have shared the advice of trying to go grad school where you want to work or will give you an edge on getting a job where you want to work afterwards. Your internships, work experiences, connections and networking in your program play a big part in helping you find a job after, and if you move somewhere else after school, you may need to take some time to build up your professional network again.
Though I take that advice with a grain of salt because many people I've come across working at CDC have gone to schools I never even knew existed or have even gone through multiple career changes to get to where they are so it really depends on you and what you make of your own career. I think it's a pro to go somewhere new and learn to live/work there, even if you go back home or an entirely new city after. I'm from the suburbs/city and took a job in rural public health after undergrad and it's honestly given me such a unique and in depth perspective of how public health works on the micro/macro scale, and I really wouldn't have grown the way I have without taking this opportunity (of which my family BEGGED me not to take bc I'd be so far away). But I do understand the appeal of staying (close to friends/family, social support, cheaper, familiar, etc). My personal view is to go wherever you see yourself as the best intellectual/social fit, where the staff/faculty care about your experience, and where you see yourself living for the duration of the program (cost of living, city, culture/activities outside of school ~ so you can still be a regular person lol, travel/commutes, weather/seasons).
I have a friend that goes to OSU for public policy and she loves it and Corvallis. The school is a large research university and from what it sounds like, her professors care about her as a person and the experience she has as a student. I'm sure the school culture would be the same for public health, but I would definitely reach out to current students so you can get a feel of what it's like living, learning, and working with each school. Overall, it depends on what you are looking for out of your program. Idk if I answered well, but that's what I got lol hope it helps somewhat 🙂

So I was accepted to Stony Brook a week ago, and they said I only have two weeks to accept or decline the offer (even though they've supposedly signed the ASPPH 4/15 agreement). Have not received any financial aid information from them, or from any other school. Anybody else having this problem?

This is what I'm talking about, if it helps.

Looks like you’ve been accepted! I do not have access to that screen but I think it’s a good sign for you.
Trying not to get excited before I know for sure...I was not expecting to get in AT ALL so I'm a little skeptical.

Congratulations to those who received acceptances and good luck to those still waiting!

Some of you guys have posted about finances and are worried about graduating with a lot of loan debt (as am I of course 😛) have any of you looked into the Public Loan Forgiveness program? This is my ultimate plan after grad school, I just hope nothing happens to it by the time I graduate. I figure this will be an interesting discussion since public health is known to not be a huge lucrative field, and the fact that merit scholarships are hard to come by for any grad student. By the time I graduate I am 98% certain that I'll be over 100k in debt. I don't want salaries to guide me to a certain job, but being that high in debt does worry me.

Do any of you know anyone in the program or do you plan on going for it yourself? Any insight is appreciated.

I work for a non-profit and enrolled into it immediately when I started. I've now done around 1 year, and i plan to continue with it after my masters.
Enrolling and moving my loans wasn't difficult in my case but I have heard in previous years it was a mess for some people.

This is exactly how I feel about UNC & Columbia! I'm really losing my mind switching between tabs and refreshing every 5 seconds...

NPR had a pretty scathing article on the program last year. It basically said only 1% of people who applied actually received the forgiveness and it was horribly mismanaged. That being said, I think there has been some real effort to get it fixed. Just make sure you do your research!

It wasn't the same school you mentioned but I had the exact same experience with LLU. They gave me exactly two weeks to accept or decline the offer. I would email the admissions office about extending the deadline because it is just ridiculous. Luckily they extended the deadline for me, but still, it all seemed very strange to me.

Just got my full financial aid package from Boston University (with a need-based grant)! I'm very surprised and impressed that BU is quite generous with aid funding compared to other MPH programs, and it's definitely making it harder for me to decide between it and Brown University right now!

I assumed they would also email them, but I just decided to check. Once you log onto Wolverine Access, I found it under "View Financial Aid Award Summary." It basically gave me some totals of the federal loan and work study on there that I am guessing I'm receiving, but there isn't a file for the official award summary which they say is what you really need to look at. I called financial aid, but had to leave a message so hopefully they'll let me know if what I'm seeing is basically an estimate of what I'm gonna get

Ask and ye shall receive... after complaining about not hearing back from UCLA mere hours ago, I just received my official rejection.

No worries, it was probably one of the longest shots I applied to, so the rejection was definitely expected.

Finally received the official letter of UMN Tuition Scholarship which makes me eligible for paying the resident tuition rate :claps:
Although I haven’t heard yet from Harvard, Yale, Vandy, and UNC, I think if an unprecedented decent scholarship don’t come out, I’ll definitely commit to the UMN🙂 They really impressed me with their ”Minnesota Nice” phenomenon, highly-informative website and guidebooks, highly-responsible staffs and professors, and affordable tuition and CoL! Only I wish their winters were not so much brutal!! (maybe the one and only drawback!)

I appreciate if the prospective students of the UMN send me DM to share our thoughts and feelings.🙂

My link didn’t have anything 🙁 although I have a feeling it will be pretty similar when something does show up. Would you mind sharing how much they estimate COA to be? I like to see what schools project to get a semi-estimate.

In addition to Columbia this morning, I just heard back from UCLA this afternoon. I unfortunately did not get in there, but I'm not too disappointed about that, to be honest. It is a little disappointing because UCLA was one of the cheaper options I had. Meh.

I’m an undergrad here at Michigan and I got into HMP for next year and usually the award summary is posted on Wolverine Access then you’ll get the official award notice posted and an email from financial aid a few weeks later. It takes some time to update if you get awarded scholarships, etc. But usually your award notice will reflect the award summary that some of you guys have seen!

Guys...forgive me for being a creep, but does anyone else look through the posts in these fb groups and wonder okay how many of these people are my forum friends?? :whistle:And secretly wonder who they arreee... "She looks fun! She must be on SDN too!"🤣

You are not alone!! Lol, I feel like it’s a fun game and if/when we start getting to meet people at visit days we’ll be able to easily guess whose who!!

Last year I met multiple people from the forums at visit days and we were able to EASILY guess each other's usernames haha

YES! This game is right up my alley! Unfortunately the way things are looking I may only be at one Visit Day soo, catch me if you can! We should all def share our experiences though! Person to find the most people wins!

I wholly agree with this! I have a pretty nontraditional background (undergrad in hard sciences with an ok-not-great GPA from a state school, two years teaching public school, and two years RA in medicine), but got accepted into two programs at JHU: Mental Health and Health, Behavior, & Society. I'm sure my application isn't competitive if you go by the numbers alone, but my personal statement really explains my background and future direction in public health. There's no way I would've gotten in if someone at JHU hadn't really taken the time to read and consider it.

Congrats on your acceptance! Hope to see you in the Fall!
You get it! I can't imagine myself going anywhere else, even though i'm still waiting for 3 ivys. The affordability of Baltimore is where it's at! Should see you in August!
