MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an email from Emory about an hour ago saying that I would hear back about merit scholarships and financial aid by the second week of March.
I got that, too. But when my inquiry was forwarded on I was told by the admissions person on Tuesday, "At this time, we are still in the process of notifying applicants of additional scholarships, like our mission-based and institutional-awards, but the merit scholarship notifications did go out last week." Unless I was being misled, though I don't see why they would. Though I understand that over time, some applicants who were offered merit scholarships may turn them down for other offers, leaving them available to reallocate.

As a New Haven resident for almost 2 years, I must say I think there are better options. Downtown, BAR has excellent mashed potato and bacon pizza (don't knock it until you try it) along with excellent beers. DaLegna has good classic pizza options, and One 6 Three has amazing funky options, my personal favorite being "The Goat" which has goat cheese, cranberry jam, asparagus, basil aioli... mmmm...

Ahhhh I've tried that same one at BAR! The Goat sounds delicious though...

Congrats!! Sweet way to end a Thursday.

I was SO surprised because this morning I got my FinAid Notice from the FAO and it didn't covered my COL. But I didn't really think I was competitive for a major scholarship so I figured I would have to apply for a PLUS loan if I really wanted to go there. So very happy Thursday indeed!

Are you attending admitted student day on 3/15?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking here for quite a while now, but figured I should jump in and say hi! I'll be attending the Columbia Admitted Student Day tomorrow, and probably JHU's on 3/8 as well. I hope to meet some of you there!

Also, for those of you asking about Columbia scholarships -- I figured I wouldn't get one because of my stats, but I learned earlier this week that I had gotten 50%. So maybe they aren't as strict on stats as we had thought?

Wow, well that’s a hefty award so they must really want you! Is Michigan your top pick now?

And I won’t be able to make the visit day unfortunately. We’ll have to count on you to fill us in on how it goes! 🙂

Has anyone actually confirmed the Yale decisions are coming out tomorrow? I know they sent us emails saying the first week of march, but I was wondering where the date March 1st came from. I think someone posted earlier they heard March 1st from a webinar in January but I was wondering if anyone had spoken to admissions more recent. Like everyone else, the stress of waiting is KILLING me.

is anyone else still waiting for Berkeley's HSB decision? I feel like i should have at least been sent the rejection by now 🙁
Yes. Yes I am still (frustrated) waiting on HSB.

I think 100% of the people around me are suuuuper sick of hearing me say "what is Berkeley doiinnggg" so I hope they put us all out of our misery soon.

Same goes for you!! It’s definitely a huge contender! I’m going to try to go as open minded to my other visit days though and not be set already on attending UM.

I’ll definitely share all my notes from the open houses I’m attending (JHU, UM, Berkeley, Emory) in the google notes!

Let me know if you have any specific qs since we’re both HBHE! Is it currently your top? You have a few other nice scholarships

Pepe's was pretty good, but I remember being a bit underwhelmed after all the hype. BAR was super good, I love that place!

Hi! Would it be possible for you to elaborate on these options/give some examples? 🙂
Sure, here's a link to the list of established practicum sites for this year. it'll change a bit by next, but some of these projects are funded year to year. There are several ways to fund these practicum experiences so you don't end up shelling out a bunch of money to complete this part of the degree.

Sick, I didn't know that this list was a thing!!! The tides have turned

Unsolicited. It was really random and I almost ignored it thinking it was the same one as before but thank goodness.
OMG congratulations! That's incredible and I've never heard them increasing it like that. Brown is also my top choice so if I could get a scholarship increase like that it would immediately beat any other school I'm thinking about. Would you mind sharing your GPA & GRE scores btw? I'm wondering if it's too late to ask for a merit aid appeal

Thank you! My stats:
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.4
GRE: 164V 151Q 5.0W

I've also been in contact with a couple professors I'm interested in working with, so I'm not sure if that helped. I think you might as well appeal, the worst they could say is no

I have seen a few people here comment about Berkeley and some wanted to hear others' thoughts on the SPH there. I attended Berkeley as an undergrad and declared public health as my major my junior year so I will share my thoughts.

1. The SPH is underfunded. During my time at Berkeley they almost removed the undergrad BA in public health due to lack of funds for the administration of it. The school also introduced a 4+1 program as a measure to get students who had done their BA at Berkeley to do their MPH there as a fifth year. My understanding is that the school needs your tuition money. At least for undergrads there were never any paid research assistantships or stipends to support student travel/research/internships during the summer.

2. There are lost of TA positions. I am not saying as a proportion of grad students but just in general. The fact that there is a public health BA means there are tons of undergrad public health courses for you to be a TA (or GSI) in. The big size of the school means there are tons of students so lots of sections that need TAs. for some classes like Biostats we even had a TA for theory and another one for the lab where we learnt R or STATA.

3. Professors are busy. Best public research institution means research is everyone's number one agenda. To get close mentorship from a professor join someone's lab or research group. Most professors have grants and will have grad students working with them.

4.Bay Area network includes UCSF, Stanford med school, lots of research opportunities there esp UCSF. The school also has strong connections to Kaiser Permanente, Blue Shield, Partners in Health, PATH and others. I will say though that the Bay Area is not a global health hub. For Health Policy and Management grads tend to end up at consulting firms like ZS and Deloitte. Also if you are into the start-up scene there are lots of opportunities to pitch and win funding.

5. Cost of living is very expensive, compare to New York. The cost of living even changed a lot in the four years I was there, tech companies moved to Oakland and Berkeley, gentrification, you know the rest.

6. UC Berkeley in general and the school of public health in particular are diverse and very liberal. The school is way ahead of the curve on diversity from student body to faculty in high places.

7. Berkeley is HARD. so everyone will be busy with their work, expect that and its easy to get left behind or feel like an imposter or get lost due to its sheer magnitude. I feel like overall mental well being of students is very low. Its super important to stay on top of wellness and create community.

My 2cents. Best wishes everybody.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you for writing all this out!

I know the Bay isn't a global health hub, but Cal has a global health program right? Do you know how strong that program is? I absolutely only want to go to Cal if I can continue to research in Africa, and I haven't seen too much about that on their website.

From what I know you can do a global health certificate in whichever concentration. There is also a Center for Global Public Health which is like a home for Global Health research. Lots of Professors including Sandy McCoy, Art Reingold even former dean Bertozzi do a lot of research in Africa. The strong areas for research in Africa are to do with maternal and child health, HIV and malaria and mostly from an Epi and Infectious Disease lens. UCSF also has strong partnerships for research in many African countries eg in Zimbabwe they have a whole organization called UCSF-University of Zimbabwe Collaboration Center which was the home for work on HIV vaccine clinical trials.

Ok great, I'll look into those things!

Congrats! Can I ask what concentration you were accepted in? Also anyone have advice on how to word a merit aid appeal email?

Does anyone know when UIC or SLU releases whether or not we received a scholarship or financial assistance?

In at USC!! My top choice!!
Happy for you! I was in the undergrad segment of Keck’s public health program. I don’t know everything about the grad program, but I know how the school operates in general! Feel free to DM if you have questions 🙂

Help!! NYU vs. Columbia health policy management?? Thoughts? Anything appreciated!

Did anyone else just get an email from Emory asking to submit an application for Institutional Awards?
Anyone have info on them?

I got this email too and just submitted the app for them. I tried to look up those awards and I can't find any info on it. I haven't received any scholarships or financial aid packages from Emory, so I'm hoping this means they've got some decent need-based award packages. I did think it was interesting that the app asked for financial awards students have received from other schools, though.
