MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys! For all those who are still waiting for a decision, hang in there! Good things will come.
The application season is finally over for me as I committed to GWU with a full ride (YAY!). As an international student, all I can say is there's always hope for us all lol.
My stats for a full ride: Small liberal arts college GPA: 3.91 GRE: 163V 165Q 4.5AW
Good luck everyone! This sub got me through the pain of the application season for real lol.
Hey! Congrats on your acceptance and the full ride at GWU! That's amazing. I have got a couple of questions. Can I message you privately?

I'm making the same decision too, except I am torn between JH, Harvard, and Berkeley (because it's half the price). I think I'm going to only think about it minimally until I know all the financial aid and scholarships I've been awarded. That'll probably make the decision easier for me. My ultimate goal is to get a PhD in Epidemiology and work for the CDC. Does anyone have any input on what schools have the best connections there or potential for me to reach my goal? (unfortunately, I didn't know about Emory's connections with the CDC until well after the application cycle)
imo, HSPH is for those who want to inclined more towards policy and politics/politicians and JH is for those who want best of the both world (somewhere between policy and practice). But, you're no wrong with either.

Are people still waiting for scholarship information from Columbia? I got accepted 2 weeks ago but still no news on finances.
Yes! I was only accepted on 2/18 but the portal says "Financial Aid award letters are anticipated to be sent within the next 3-4 weeks. Your award letter can be viewed under Status Update" so I'm not too worried yet. It seems like even if you don't get scholarships they still break down the cost of attendance based on others who have received their financial aid information at this point, so I'm sure its coming!

i have seen on Harvard website about winter Field experience opportunities with CDC. One of my friends at HSPH also went to CDC for two weeks for winter internship in January. I know that Emory has connections. And also Hopkins offers Winter projects where we could choose US and International sites but I do not know if anyone opted for CDC and got accepted but I am sure its possible from any of these three places. As you already know your future goals, be focussed on finding faculty who work with CDC and identifying connections in your year. This is my opinion .

And I agree that having financial assistance changes things. Unfortunately, I did not get aid from Hopkins and Harvard mostly won't offer it either because none of my international friends have aid from Harvard. But waiting to reassess new information is a good approach

Hey guys! I am trying to decide between NYU College of Global Public Health and Tufts for Health Policy. If anyone is considering either of these programs, or knows anything to help inform a decision, please let me know!! Congrats to everyone on all their acceptances!

Anyone know some current students at Emory I can speak to ?

I was considering NYU before I was accepted to Columbia for Health Policy and Management! I had emailed the program director about some questions I had and he was very responsive so if you want that information, let me know and I'll DM you! All I can say is both their admissions office and the HPM department were very responsive to my questions so definitely reach out to them for more information if you need it. Good luck with your decision!!!

Columbia app is under final review and the admission office said by the end of this week and if not next. Does anybody know about how long it took from when their app went under final to review to when they got a decision?

I got the initial email saying it was sent for review on 12/3 and got a decision on 02/13.

Got an email saying it went into review on 12/12/19....currently still waiting on a decision and I applied to HPM

IN AT UCI!!! Was accepted for the Sociocultural Diversity and Health Emphasis earlier this afternoon! Thank you to everyone who has responded to my frantic messages, answered my many pesky questions, and offered words of encouragement when they were needed the most. I'm sooo excited to return to my alma mater and can't wait to meet my cohort this Fall 🙂
Congrats! See you in the UCI fall quarter!

does anyone have any advice on how to pick a school
I would say look at the faculty, the courses, and money to decide.
If you have more interest int he faculties work, the courses seem most beneficial to you, and you are not financially strained, I think that is a good place to start. Prestige is also nice, so you can start by narrowing it down to more similarly "Prestigious" programs.

Definitely reach out to current students as well, they can give you a really good idea of what is going on.

I'm sort of coming up with a system that weighs different things I care about so I can see what school is the best. I'm taking location, average starting salary, rate of students employed/in school after graduation, curriculum, faculty, cost, prestige, probability of being able to do research, and difficulty of program (as stated by current students) into consideration. Giving heavier weights to things that are important to me (i.e. COST), then I can sort of add up what score each school gets. I'm trying to find a way to see what programs have the best connection with specific companies I want to work for and someone recommended that researching professors who work there is a good start!

Already decided, but is anyone still waiting on Brown? I know they released a wave of decisions about a month ago, and it’s been about 12 weeks since my app went under review.

Rejected from Harvard, as well. No more schools to hear back from. Will likely commit to UNC, as it'll be the cheapest option and I live within the Triangle!

Rejected from Harvard too. Waiting on Columbia to finish off my admission cycle, but I'll most likely be committing to Hopkins next month.

Anyone else attending NYU's Admitted Students Day on March 7 or Hopkins' on March 13?

has anyone on this forum visited hopkins or baltimore before and have any info about the area?

^^ similar question but for unc -- i've only been to NC once for about a week and split it between chapel hill and asheville. is there anyone that goes to unc that can speak to the environment/housing situation (best time to look), financial aid .. and really anything else!

I didn't go to UNC but grew up in Chapel Hill, if that helps 🙂

Rejected from Harvard lol. Does anyone have suggestion on Columbia Epi in infectious diseases vs. Yale Epi for microbial diseases? They both have similar tuition and housing. I heard Yale has better alumni network but Columbia certainly has better location. I’m sure both schools are great in the area, so I don’t really know how to choose.

Kind of annoyed with Columbia. I was very excited when I got accepted last week as it was one of my top choices. I sent a few emails asking general questions which I couldn't find online, information about travel stipends, speaking to current students etc and I never got a response. I sent followup emails and still never got a response. I called today and informed them that I was admitted last week, really excited about the program and attending and I had some questions and the person on the phone was just like " uhh ok, you should send an email " Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I kind of wish the school would respond in a more positive manner since I am trying to decide if I want to go there or not. I just want to talk to someone about the program since there isn't much info on the accelerated mph

I am also still waiting on brown, but I applied in January and it seems it takes at least a month to hear back!

Anyone else still waiting on a response from Michigan (HMP)? Approaching the 3 week mark since my interview, and it's the last of the schools I applied to that has not responded, but also my top choice? Surprised how few posts there are on this thread about Michigan, does that mean most of you are also still waiting?

I’ve also had negative experiences with Columbia’s PH department, particularly those who answer the phone.

I once called to see if they had my SSN on file for financial aid. The person on the phone said that it wasn’t their departments responsibility. i then read their website portal verbatim- where it says “please call this number to verify if we have your social on file to be considered” they then said oh you’re right I can add that...

i don’t think you’re reading too far into this. schools need to remember how important perception is right now and put larger efforts in recruitment.

I had a similar experience with UMich, lack of response etc., it doesn’t bode well for their future.
I agree with both of you. I am factoring in how the school treated me into the decision as petty as that sounds lol I come from a huge public university and I was so shocked to see how nice some of the schools were to me and the possibilities that can happen when they are (i.e. updating my application when I got a paper published after submitting)!

I'll be attending/visiting for their admitted students day-- I'll let you know what I learn/see!

when are you going? i'm going april 3. i just hate that its soooo close to the decision deadline.

Also rejected from Harvard. Limping over the cycle finish line, as god intended. Lol. For everyone else in the same boat, don’t feel too badly about it. It’s Harvard, after all! It sounds like you all have great options too.
Now to decide between NYU and Tulane... :/

The earlier one (March 13)! I would have gone April but yeah, it was too close to the deadline for comfort.

Rejected from Harvard. Deciding between JHU and Columbia... any ideas?

I live in Durham, but all I can say is they got this dope Mediterranean place right by campus that’s so good (Mediterranean deli)

Guys, does anybody know what Harvard looks for in the applicants? I am aware they look at applications holistically, but what actually makes them like/ not like a candidate? I mean any idea about their process or if anyone has heard anything from friends studying there or just anything. Haha, may be, I am just looking for sort of closure and may be I won’t find it, but yeaaa...... I mean I was just wondering that Johns Hopkins is number 1 in public health but it seems like Harvard has a higher rejection rate.

I originally planned for that one but had had a schedule conflict come up on March 13. I’m thinking of just visiting the city on my own but I don’t know if that would help as much as the admitted student day lol
