MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to global epi at Michigan and International Health (health systems) at Hopkins. I've always kind of dreamed of Hopkins, and it's Hopkins... but Michigan does have a great program. Does anyone know if later down the road having a degree from Hopkins (just because of the #1 status) will be beneficial or is my ego getting in the way? Btw I'm likely doing med school after the masters degree. Don't know if that helps. I need advice!

My brother did Molecular Epi and then med school at UMich! Tbh they're both very prestigious Universities. I guess at the end of the day you have to make sure you're GPA is high, and decide where you want to go for Med School to build connections and relationships. You can't go wrong either way. Just see where you want too go for Med School.... May help you decide!

Best of Luck!

Free tuition!!! Loans suck. If you're going onto med school, you will be spending a lot of money, so the free masters will be very helpful. You'll start off med school off financially on the right foot. Also it's not like you're choosing between JHU and a no name university. Michigan is a very very good school for public health.

So...is anyone else here waiting to hear back from Emory?! I applied mid-November, but my application wasn't sent to my department of choice (GEH) until late January (so it hasn't been 6 weeks yet.) I am aching to hear back from them :nailbiting:(well..if it's good news..haha.) I'm a bit worried since a lot of you guys have heard back and well, let's be honest...my GPA/GRE scores aren't that great:smack:. But I'm still holding on to that hope!

Both schools are great options. I ended up choosing Hopkins because I graduated from Michigan (Hopkins is also cheaper, and closer to home). I'm also applying to medical school after graduation and so Hopkins Cardiovascular and Clinical Epidemiology program was the best fit for me in terms of my research interests and career goals (program is a joint program in the school of medicine and public health). I would advise you to connect with faculty and students now that you are accepted and attend admitted students days if possible at each school to see which school fits you best and will align best with your career goals. You can't go wrong with either school and Ann Arbor is such a great place aside from the extreme cold. I don't think I would turn down a full tuition scholarship though! Congratulations and Good luck!

I received a package from Michigan in the mail today that contained an acceptance letter and a key-shaped USB containing info about the program, very nice touch Michigan!

Has anyone heard from Berkeley. I applied to Maternal and Child Health Program in December. Still haven't heard from the. I applied to UCLA the same day & received a decision 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Thanks for the tip! This "unofficial" acceptance is somewhat anxiety-inducing, however. I don't know whether to rejoice or keep a lid on it...
Upon a closer look of the wording, it looks like it's an "unofficial" letter, but an official offer of admission, since they say, "You will soon receive official notification from the International Health department with additional information about the offer of admission. To reply to our offer of admission please complete the online enrollment form." ... so let the lid fly, I say! :soexcited:

Wow, congratulations! I've been accepted to the same programs at UM and JHU (minus the full-ride dilemma)... I think later down the road, the name of the school will be dwarfed by the experience and work you do there... Even though JH is my dream school, I don't think I could turn down a 100% scholarship - $0 vs $60,000+?!

I'd say definitely go to U of M. It's a really great school and if you're going to med school, saving the master's tuition is going to help you a lot. Congratulations by the way, that's awesome!!!

Eeek March 6th!! is there another day for those of us who still haven't heard back ??
There is another one, I think it's April 10 or 11 off the top of my head. WashU's is that day, so I had to choose the 6th.

To those who applied to UIC, how long did it take from when they received your SOPHAS application (and processed it) and when you received a decision? Thanks!

I applied mid December and still haven't heard. I called them and they said because it's in the hands of each department they don't really have a guarantee of how long it'll take to hear.

It took me roughly three months to hear back. I applied early November though, so it may not take as long for you.
Thanks! I actually also went to Michigan for undergrad (and I'm from the state of Michigan), so part of me was hoping for a change of scenery especially with this freezing weather we've had lately. I guess I'm wondering if the name recognition of Hopkins will later help for med school apps? On the other hand, I wonder if Michigan med school will like it I went to their SPH. I'm probably over thinking things.
In the long run, where you got your MPH is not really going to have much of an impact on your med school applications. Public health is considered a "soft" science and tends to have very minimal impact on medical school admissions. However, if you go to Michigan, you may be able to do some research with medical school faculty. That could have an impact on your admissions there - especially if you are able to get on some publications.

As the above poster said, where you do your MPH will have little to no impact on med school applications. Any benefit would likely be restricted to the school you're applying to, i.e. you get a letter of rec from a UM professor who has maybe collaborated with UM med school faculty in the past. The greatest benefit from an MPH, specifically to med school applications, will be research exposure and getting published. Go where you will have to chance to get involved in that.

Anyone else waiting on Yale SBS? I applied December 10 and was confirmed December 19th.

I am also waiting GWU and it's been past the 10 week mark since my application was complete which was on Dec 11th. I called right now and they said that they are trying to release decisions within this week so I guess we'll know something by the end of this week if not early next week. Good luck!! 🙂

I'm in the same boat. I emailed the public health office yesterday morning to ask when we can expect to hear back and haven't received a reply yet. I've seen a few acceptances on GradCafe but they've been rolling in slowly. I just want to start making decisions! :nailbiting:

If I haven't yet heard from Columbia MPH (HPM) is it safe to assume I won't be hearing back till mid-March now?! AGH!

I was thinking the same I know it's been less than a week since my interview but i guess it did say online they'll be letting us know in March...

Does anyone know more about Columbia's interview process? Is it just a formality? Do you have to do absolutely horrible not to get an offer? Or is it more like UMich's interview process rigorous in a sense where you need to bring something to the table before you can sit with the big kids...

Maybe I'm overthinking this lol

I feel ya on that one! Born a spartan raised a wolverine (literally since 4) also an alumni. So the weather is crazy and it's so nice to get a change in scenery. Baltimore is nice, haven't visited the campus but I am in the state often for family.

I think a full-ride will play to your advantage for medical school. That's impressive. Can you see if Hopkins will give you a counter offer? A friend of mine had done that and she ended up with a full ride for medical school...

I know someone who asked for a counter offer from Hopkins and they did it but she definitely didn't get a full ride lol.

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about negotiating scholarship packages?

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about negotiating scholarship packages?
The one students I know at Hopkins told me that she replied to their offer and stated she would like to accept but other institutions offered significant awards packages and asked if Hopkins could offer the same. I'm not sure if she told JHU how much her other offers were or not.

I would speak to them in person if you can or over the phone. These are delicate matters that need to be handled in an agile manner.

Here is her response:

"after receiving my acceptance letter, I emailed the Academic Manager for my Program indicating that I was extremely interested in accepting their offer for admission but may be unable to due to financial constraints/limitations. I inquired about funding opportunities within the school and fortunately my Department (Health Policy & Management) was able to secure additional scholarship funds. Hopkins takes great care in selecting applicants for admissions and from what I can tell, JHSPH will do its best to retain that selected group."

When I emailed them last week they told me I should hear back within the next two weeks.
Yes me too!! However, I called and remarkably someone answered on Friday and said "very soon. by the end of next week (which would mean the 27)...

Heard back from USF today:

"We are happy to inform you that the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EPB) review committee has recommended you for acceptance into the U.S.F. College of Public Health graduate program."

Says I have to wait for official acceptance from the Office of Grad Studies (up to 3 weeks) and I have to wait for a decision from the Communicable Disease department too. So I'm going to take this as an acceptance to the epi. concentration at the very least. Unless Temple offers me an assistantship (I applied and will find out in May) USF is what I'm shooting for.

Super excited. Hope everyone starts hearing back now soon!

has anyone accepted to UCLA gotten any information about their admitted students day this Friday??

I registered on Eventbrite, which had some basic info. Other than that, I've seen the info on this page:

http://ph.ucla.edu/prospective-students/admitted-students

I interviewed for a different program at UCLA last year, and we were given a detailed schedule and other information at check in, so maybe this will be a similar situation.

I don't remember getting anything to register through eventbrite. I'll send them an email now.

Hey! I e-submitted my SOPHAS app to UC-Berkeley for MCH on 11/30 with an email that they received in on 12/01. I submitted the Berkeley Grad school app on 11/30 as well and received an email on 12/18 saying that my application was complete. On 01/29, I received my acceptance letter. I've been getting calls from a couple of current students and alumni of the program who now work for the department or admissions letting me know I could contact them if I needed help. The spring visit day is Monday, March 16th so I definitely hope you hear back soon!!

this is probably such a silly question, but do you guys plan on taking your parents to preview days if they are around? my parents are visiting that week so i thought it made sense to have them tag along! but i don't want to be the only dweeb who brought their parents!!

I had my interview last week too, but for the MHA program. I am so anxious :/ I don't think my interview went amazingly. My stats are pretty much at the minimum too

I mean if they gave you an interview they saw potential I know they don't offer everyone an interview.

But ya I just can't stop checking my email, lol any this forum to see if any domestic students have heard back!

I think we won't know until March

I'm taking my dad to NYC but Columbia said no guests. I'd definitely bring him if they didn't say otherwise. If you're close with your parents and value their opinion on where you're going to school and the school allows guests, I don't see why there would be an issue. I'll still be bringing my dad to things when I'm 50.

Anyone else waiting on Yale SBS? I applied December 10 and was confirmed December 19th.

Finally got admitted yesterday. I was verified by mid-November. Should be rolling out soon!

Anybody heard back from or waiting on UC Berkeley Health & Social Behavior? That's the last one school I need to hear back from.

Was pretty much set on Tulane but parents kept telling me they really wanted me to go to U Mich. I told them repeatedly that the program at Tulane seemed like a better fit for me (GCH: Nutrition) despite some logistical concerns (safety, the necessity of having a car, the lack of campus for grad students, etc.) ..and then Michigan offers me a scholarship this morning LOL.

Nothing crazy like 100% tuition but still something over the nothing that Tulane has offered me. Struggles. Anyone here have any thoughts on the HBHE program at U Mich? I'm less interested in academic research (thinking abt pursuing a DrPH afterwards) and was quite interested by the Nutrition track that Tulane is offering.

I heard back today from the department that all applicants should receive a decision within the next two weeks - so I'm guessing we should all hear before Admitted Students Day on 3/16?

So...is anyone else here waiting to hear back from Emory?! I applied mid-November, but my application wasn't sent to my department of choice (GEH) until late January (so it hasn't been 6 weeks yet.) Hmm I wouldn't hesitate to call. Did you have a second choice? Emory hasn't been great at notifying people that their application has moved on to their 2nd choice department so its possible that happened. My application got forwarded to my department mid January and I just heard back last week though. I did call because there was some confusion with OPUS and the lady I spoke to was super helpful and called back later to follow up.

Does anybody know the appropriate way to tell a school that you won't be accepting their offer? I have my heart set on a college, but I keep receiving emails from other colleges; I want to make sure people on the wait list don't need to wait by April to take my spot!

Some schools send out offer reply forms by snail mail which you have to mail back, while others have online forms on their admitted students web pages. So it depends on the school!
