MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone get an email from Brown about an open house on 1/12? Unclear why they would send that w/o an admissions decision?

Yes. It's identical to an email they sent for a similar event in November. They are just recruiting more applicants; it isn't an admitted students' event. [But I hope we get a decision by 1/12!]

FYI - I just received an e-mail from Harvard confirming they received by my application (it was verified 12/9) and that is now considered under review.

Me too; guess they do send them out eventually. I am going to have a hard time waiting until March for their decision!

Heard back from UTH in Houston. It's a no go. Booo ... that school was the one I was hoping the most for 🙁

Looks like I might only have private schools to choose from soon.

Wow very impressive work record!

Thank you! However, this just illustrates that everyone can make their dream school happen with a bit of hard work. I had serious doubts about my candidacy, all of which, evidently, proved to be very false. So, to those out there who doubt themselves - DO NOT! 😀

Which program did you apply to at Houston?

Are there any MD/MPH applicants around? I'm an M3 at a state med school applying to take a year off for my MPH next year. I've been pretty stressed through this whole process because I have no idea what the normal application standards are for people who took the MCAT and not the GRE. Does anyone know anything about chances for people in my situation? I'd appreciate any insight!

I applied for Epi 🙂
Oh gotcha! Well at least it seems like you do have a place to go although it may not be your top choice! Just a quick question, on your UTH portal, did your application status say incomplete until you were given a decision? Mine does, and I don't have any holds or things on my to do list so I wanted to be sure I'm fine.

I never received anything about opening a UTH Portal? I am scouring my e-mails and see nothing about it...I just received an admissions e-mail this morning.

And thanks for the condolences! It's ok, I have been accepted to better ranking (and more expensive) schools, but UT would have been the best "bang for your buck" in the Southern region of the States. Best of luck to you, though! This waiting game is exhausting, eh?

Hello,

I understand it's late in the application process. I have already applied for Columbia MPH Epi and GWU Global Health Epi and Disease Control program. I am aiming for Emory Epi next. What are my chances? An answer would be greatly appreciated from anyone!!

Undergrad School: Georgia State University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: Overall: 3.67
Major/Minor: Biological Sciences
GRE: 151V/152Q/4W
Experience/Research:

-2+ years mentoring and tutoring in science as an undergraduate
-volunteer as undergrad with Emory Clinic for 6 month
-undergraduate research in molecular parasitology for one semester
-CDC summer internship research focused on chronic disease epidemiology, 2 pending publications from this
-presented research at national conference for minority students
-currently a contractor at the EPA doing epidemiology laboratory support

4 LORs from college advisor who has known me well 2+ years, undergraduate research professor, CDC mentor I did research with, and supervisor from mentoring/tutoring job I did for a year

I am mostly concerned about my GRE. I know it does not seem clear yet, but my interests are in infectious disease epidemiology.

Once again

Applied: Columbia MPH- certificate in ID epidemiology, GWU-Global Epi and Disease Control
Want to apply: Emory

No acceptance yet, but all I've applied to are verified at this point! Should I go for Emory?? Would love to go here because of connection I already have with CDC and strong biostats background this school will offer!

Any input is great please and thank you so much!

Hi! That showed up in my portal too and I was concerned so I emailed them- apparently it only means that their decision isn't complete, rather than your application. I got my decision via email before I saw it turn to green on the portal though!

I just recently asked Emory about when OPUS logins would be sent out as well as when we could add additional programs to our applications and this was their reply:

"Thank you for your interest in Rollins School of Public Health. We will begin to download and process applications by the end of next week. You will receive an email with OPUS login information which will allow you to track your application materials and status. This email will also provide instructions on how to include two additional department programs to your application. We should be able to access the same materials you have provided to SOPHAS. Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions."

I hope that helps anyone else who was curious about the OPUS login information!

anyone else know when harvard gives out acceptances? i applied to global health and population and am wondering how competitive the program is

I asked about why I was never sent credentials for the myUTH site and they apologized for never having sent it. Then sent it to me this morning.... it is a bit too late now! Congrats to those of you getting positive feedback from UTH, though!

Based on past years, acceptances start rolling out in early February through the end of March.

I'm an MD but graduated a couple years ago. This is pure speculation, but I imagine for someone in your situation, your performance in med school would be at least as important as your MCAT. They probably look at percentiles to compare MCAT scores to the GRE. My sense is that test scores would play a larger role for someone fresh out of college or with little work experience.

Hmm, good to know. My school is true pass/fail so I'm afraid my med school transcript won't look extraordinary, even though I've done well in classes. I've honored all my clerkships so far this year though, so I wonder if adding that somewhere will help give them a better idea of my performance. Thanks for the insight!

I applied on Friday 12/9 (all of my transcripts had been verified on that day as well) and received the supplemental e-mail on Monday 12/12.

I think we should start hearing back from BU starting next week (if they're consistent with last year). Fingers crossed!

Scheduled an interview for GW on 12/20. Does anyone have any tips? I think its a Skype interview!

All of y'all getting into BU, when did y'all submit the secondary app? Also congrats! BU is my top so I hope I get in with some scholarship, so here's hoping!

My application was marked as complete on 11/28!

For those who applied to Michigan, how long did it take to receive a confirmation email after you submitted your application?

For those of you who got into BU, do y'all have a link to the Applicant Gateway? I noticed on the admitted student site that we need to tell them our final decision through the Applicant Gateway, but I don't seem to have a link to anything other than the supplemental application. I'd like to tell them I'm definitely going! :soexcited:

~Can someone chance me for U of M MPH and MHI? Those are by far my top choice programs and if I get in, will definitely be attending. Let me know your thoughts (although I know I haven't posted my experience/research yet which definitely plays a role---I'll add that when I get the chance)

We have very similar stats (mine are on page 1) and I got into U of M for general epi so I bet you will get in as well!

Hey y'all! I got into BU with merit! Congrats to everyone else! I was wondering if y'all know that since the email designates a merit scholarship that means we didn't get the other types of scholarships at BU? I'm thinking of the Dean's ones or whatnot cause there is a separate category for merit based scholarships at this website. http://www.bu.edu/sph/admissions/financing-your-education/funding-inside-bu/

Did you find out right now?

Yeah I just got an email. But they don't specific the amount or if it's a specific scholarship so I was just wondering if it's just a general congratulations. I'm just interested to see how and when the big scholarships are awarded
