MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats everyone ! In at Columbia for Advanced MpH one year program Epi. Anyone else got into advanced program or received merit scholarship as the letter said nothing about scholarship

I'm not allowed to express my opinions about schools people applied to? Didn't know my fellow mph students were so sensitive.
No, rather than calling them sensitive without context, you should say they are sensitive to what might be important to others. All of these programs give comparable academic experiences but range in several other clinical and mentorship avenues, not to mention personal reasons someone might want to be in that geographic area. What might be a confusing top choice to you might be an excellent one for someone else.

Just curious, has anyone heard from Tulane or GW about financial aid information? Congrats to everyone getting accepted!

I reached out to Tulane because it seems there are two steps to applying for financial aid: inputting your SSN onto their Gibson Online website (so they can match your FAFSA with your application) and filling in the 2018-19 School of Public Health Financial Aid Addendum. Both of these are separate websites that require a separate username and password. While I was able to enter my SSN with instructions I received by email on 1/10, I learned from a Tulane financial aid counselor that a Tulane email address/credentials are necessary to access the Financial Aid Addendum. I asked for clarification and it seems to me like you can't actually apply for financial aid using the Addendum unless you've accepted their offer of admission.

Thanks for this! Financial aid will be a deciding factor for me so this is sooo annoying. Why they gotta make it so hard??

For those that got into GW, how long did it take for you to hear back, from the time your got the confirmation email for GW that they received your completed application to when you got the admission email? Thanks!
my app was confirmed december 8th and i got accepted via email on december 18th

I feel the same way! It’s baffling to think that their prospective students are all able to make their decision without financial aid info.

Oh wow. They don't offer grants and scholarships?

I know exactly how you feel. Seeing people get into Emory over the past month have made me feel a little discouraged and doubtful that I'll get in because their stats and experience are way above mine. I try not to compare myself to others and I'm holding on to optimism and hope! Good luck to you!

Oh they definitely do, but from what I've heard it's a lot less generous than many of the other schools.

That's what I'm trying to do! Good luck! Hopefully, we hear from Emory soon!

Does anyone know when to expect to hear back from San Diego State? It's been over two months from the last time my portal updated and I'm so anxious

Hello! I've been lurking forever and really appreciate all of you in this forum! I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so let me know. I got into Columbia last night (MPH in Epi w/ a certificate in Global Health) but am starting to regret choosing the Global Health certificate. Does anyone know how hard it would be to change it? I'd like to change it to Advanced Epi (my quant score was at the 78th percentile).

what did you ask them?
I didn't ask them anything, it was the email I they sent to confirm receipt of my application:

"Thank you for submitting your application to the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health masters program. Your application is complete and will be forwarded to the department for review. Decisions notification will be sent via email only in February."

My email from Columbia said my decision would be sent in February so I still have hope!

I'm 99% sure I got this same email, but I think I might've deleted it. I thought maybe it was a dream, but I remember them telling me in my confirmation email that they received my application and they wouldn't get back till February and not to contact them regarding an update. This the email you're talking about?

Thank goodness! I thought it was all in my head. I guess I must've deleted it.

Yes, but it doesn't say anything about not contacting them. In fact it lists an email address to use if you have questions!

I called Columbia today and they said February, I don't know why some people would hear back and others wouldn't.

my application was submitted and approved on December 15 and I was accepted to their MPH program yesterday...my guess is that the people who applied earlier heard back yesterday.

Just checked the portal and I got into Johns Hopkins MPH full-time! Haven’t yet received the email from them.

OMG CONGRATS! I;ve been refreshing the portal every minute. I can't wait to hear back~!! When did you submit your application?

I mean I applied in November, priority. I still haven't heard anything. Even if I was rejected (which I totally expect to be) I still don't know why I wouldn't have heard back.

Has anyone else on this forum heard back from Harvard? I know there are two people that already heard back yesterday. I applied for their MPH program in Health Policy in late October.

I'm on the same boat, I'm assuming they just have a lot of applications to go through. Not to worried since Columbia isn't one of my top choice due to $$ but I hope I can hear back soon.

Don’t worry decisions are normally rendered by each Dept separately and both the decisions of Harvard were not from HPM Dept. I also applied in end October and haven’t heard anything for the health policy track

has anyone heard back from harvard's programs? i know that they are supposed to be in feb, but ive gotten some earlier decisions back.

also accepted to columbia, JHU, GW, mount sinai, northwestern, and a few others!

I emailed the associate director for my Emory program asking for an updated timeline and was told that I've been admitted! She said that official decisions will be rendered in OPUS later this week for most people. 🙂
Congrats!!! What program did you apply to? Did they send you an admission email or just told you off the bat after you asked them for the update? I'm temped to email them but I kind of just want to sit and wait. lol I also think because I ranked programs from different departments, I might not hear from them soon if I don't get into my first choice program.

Epi! I emailed the director and she just told me I was accepted and that opus would be updated late this week for most applicants 🙂

My GRE scores are 150Q/155V and 152Q/152V. However, I only sent the latter score to Hopkins. Should I send the 150Q/155V scores as well or does it not make a difference?

I know I posted yesterday (about the MPH/MPA) and I'm sorry for bringing it up again, but do any of you have any opinions on dual degrees?

Despite the advantages, I already have a Masters in Development, and don't want to be in a situation where it doesn't add much value to my profile.

I'm so conflicted, gahhh.

In my opinion you shouldn't have to send both scores. I think it's good that you sent the latter scores because you want both scores to be at least 50th percentile.

I think the answer depends on what you want to do and focus on. I don't know much about MPA programs but I know it is rather a very broad degree. My friend is doing MPA but he is focused on education/nonprofit management, whereas another friend of mine is doing MPA focusing on economics.

My Columbia apps were sent and verified pretty early, like beginning of October. Really hoping that not hearing a decision yesterday isn’t a bad sign 🙁

My app was also complete on 12/13, but I have not heard anything yet. What department/certificate did you apply for? I wonder if each department sends out their own acceptances...

I applied with intent to focus on maternal and child health. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that BU operates its certificate programs in a fairly fluid way, meaning there's some flexibility to mix and match/change your mind after matriculating. I also get the impression that they focus on the core courses in the beginning, so most students don't delve deeply into their specializations until a little later the program/curriculum. This leads me to believe that admissions decisions will all come from the central SPH admissions office. But that doesn't mean you need to worry. It's still early, and I'm sure they will get to you in the next batch (hopefully very soon!).
