MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm finishing my last semester of undergrad at IU-Bloomington! I don't know if you're still considering IU, since you got into some really highly ranked programs, but if you are, feel free to ask me questions about living in Bloomington and navigating our gigantic campus. I also know some great professors in the school of public health down here, so feel free to DM me.

Thanks for offering to help! I actually have a good friend that is in a PhD program there and I loved the campus when I went to visit. However, I don't think I am still considering IU.

Yeah, the campus is beautiful. I totally get why you wouldn't still be considering it, though, since IU's school of public health is fairly new and isn't as prestigious.

I've lived in the Midwest my entire life so it's more about going someplace different. Indiana is pretty much a carbon copy of Wisconsin haha.

Haha at least it's not as cold here. But I 100% feel you on getting out of the Midwest. I've lived in Indiana all my life, and I'm ready to leave.

Can someone offer any insight into the Chapel Hill interview process? My interview is on Monday. Thanks!

Has anyone else heard back from Vanderbilt? They emailed me asking for a phone interview next week...
Have you had your call yet? I had mine last week and am so anxious to hear back about funding, but the window they gave in the acceptance email (mid-February through mid-April) seems so long!

I agree. It doesn't give us an ample amount of time to plan our trips, especially traveling from coast to coast.

Is that Harvard's only admitted student day? It seems to conflict with Emory...and I imagine there will be some admits in common considering both schools.

Is anyone planning on going to Yale's admitted student day on March 26th?

I was wondering if anyone has been admitted to or is attending UIC's MPH and could give some insight into some positives and negatives of the program. Specifically the epi department. Thanks!

I've heard back twice. The first time I was given a conditional acceptance since they said I didn't meet their requirements for the statistics course. Recently, they sent me an email that said that they reviewed my app again and that I have been fully accepted since I did take a statistics course.
Yes same for me. I took stats like 7 years ago. They said I didn’t need to take the biostats course anymore. I also talked to someone from the department who said they were in the process of putting together and online math refresher for those of us who haven’t had a statistics course in a while.

Same! I really like the program! Maybe we will be classmates in the fall.

Same! I like the program as well. I'm leaning more towards it every day. And yeah we might end up classmates!

Since I am a non-traditional student and don't have a formal science/public health background, I don't know where exactly I stand as far as metrics are concerned (hence why I'm applying to a broad swath of programs). Any advice or observations are welcome! Thanks all, and good luck everyone!
Hi, I was also interested in pursuing the HPM track, but I had a hard time figuring out which programs were strongest in this concentration and not just highly ranked overall. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which program to pursue out of University of Washington, Emory, GWU, UC Berkeley, and UCLA for an HPM concentration? Any feedback would be great, Thanks!

Just checked my JHU portal(MSPH in health policy & management) and noticed that there was a rejection, telling me "We are not able to offer you an admission this time", a little bit upset but totally within my expectation, since the program is really competitive. Good luck for those ones who still haven't received their decisions!

Why did you check? Did you receive an email?

No, I have mine tomorrow, actually! I know, this funding wait is stressing me out. How did your interview go?

omg when did u apply and how did u find out ughhhhhhhhh this wait is killing me. i applied pretty late compared to others and now i'm punching myself for it :rage:
I just got a Congratulations email 4 hours ago. I applied in mid November, but please note that I applied to MPH epi (not epi/bio) as I am an international medical graduate. I think you should wait a bit for a decision from MPH epi/bio. Good luck!

I think it went well, but it was a few hours before acceptances went out so at the time I wasn't sure if it had anything to do with admissions or was just for scholarship allocation. In hindsight, I may have answered things a little differently if I'd known I was definitely admitted. Good luck with yours! Which track did you apply to?

Could anyone give me a little insight into their Dartmouth phone interview experience? I applied somewhat impulsively recently (for the MS in Healthcare Research) and received an invitation for a phone interview that I scheduled to take place later this week. Thanks in advance!!!
I had an interview for mph program rather than ms, and I am not sure whether it will be similar. They asked questions such as why Dartmouth, your career plan, your teamwork experience and what's your consideration when making decisions among programs to which you are admitted, and also prepare for some questions you wanna ask them

For Saint Louis University, they'll starting sending out Financial Aid packets after Feb 15th if anyone else is interested there!
Did they say if they were including teaching fellowship offers in this as well?

I applied by the deadline and haven't heard back yet either! Anxiously waiting....Also my portal indicates that they're still waiting for my GRE score report. Their website seemed to indicate that that's normal and that it won't link up, even if they've received it. Does yours show the same??

Hey! I actually had a similar problem where the portal showed that my transcripts hadn't been received even though I sent them in early. I reached out to admissions and they said it was a glitch in the system, its probably the same for you too. I'd reach out just in case though! I was also in the situation where my portal wasn't processed until after the priority deadline but when I asked if I still qualified for the priority deadline, they said yes since they go by the SOPHAS submission date! Good luck and I hope you get in!

I woke up to an email from GWU telling me that I received $18k in scholarships. $15k is a Dean's award and $3k is a grant for being a first generation student.

Also, I really didn't expect anything from GWU since my stats were pretty average IMO. So if you think you may not get anything, think again!

I wasn't asked to interview. Is this a department-by-department thing? Or is it if you're on the edge? Or perhaps being considered for scholarships?

Thank you so much! Good luck to you as well. Here's to hoping we hear soon 🙂

Does anyone know if Minnesota is giving out more scholarships/when?

I emailed them about it, and they told me that all scholarships have been awarded. The only way more would be given out is if someone who was offered one doesn't matriculate there, so the funds could be allocated to someone else.

It may be by department. The email that I received stated that interviews are required for admissions process, at least for HPM. It was also stated on the program webpage. I would contact the department.

It varies by dept. I was accepted to Health Behavior at UNC and I know for a fact that interviews were not part of the admissions process--unless of course you scheduled one during a visit or something to make connections. They are required for HPM and other dept(s), though I can't say for sure which (drawing a blank but I'm from Chapel Hill and I remember friends who were applying saying they had to do one as well)! Calling definitely can't hurt.

I should clarify I was already accepted at UNC 😉

I called JHU (because I'm impatient) and spoke to someone in the MPH department who told me that decisions would be out 6-8 weeks after their deadline, and that we'd hear back in March. I didn't understand (since 6-8 weeks after the 12/1 deadline puts us in mid January) and she said that we'd hear in March. Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe she meant 6-8 weeks from today (which sucks!) If anyone is so inclined and wants to call them and report back, I wouldn't hate it...
